Archos adds the 80 Cobalt to its ICS tablet range: 8-inch screen, 1.6GHz CPU and 1GB of RAM

The FCC may have spoiled the surprise months ago, but Archos has taken to Facebook to officially reveal the new member of its Elements range -- the Archos 80 Cobalt. As you may have guessed from the familiar size codification, the WiFi-only slate sports an 8-inch capacitive screen filled with 1024 x 768 pixels, supporting 1080p video playback. The other specs you'll want to know include the dual-core processor running at 1.6GHz, 1GB of RAM and 8 gigs of on-board storage, expandable with a microSD card of up to 64GB. Modest 2-megapixel and 0.3-megapixel shooters occupy the back and front of the 0.48-inch (12mm) thick tablet, respectively, which weighs in at a solid one pound (470g). There's no word on a release date or pricing for this ICS device, but we'd imagine the answers are "soon" and "under $200." Any more than that, and we can't see people choosing it over, say, a Nexus 7, even if it does have an extra inch on the competition. Netbot 1.1 offers push notification, post search

App.net fans rejoice! The best iOS app for Twitter's competition just got better, as Tapbots, LLC has released an update to their Netbot app (US$4.99 for iPhone, $4.99 for iPad).

TUAW reviewed Netbot 1.0 a few weeks ago, and the app provides the familiar Tweetbot user interface to the ad-free and open alternative to Twitter. The update to Netbot 1.1 provides push notifications -- users can choose to receive notification of mentions, reposts, stars or follows. Tapbots built a handy Test Notification System button into the app, providing a way to insure that you're receiving notifications.

The other big new experimental feature is the addition of post search capabilities. From what I've seen so far, this feature works well. Tapbots also notes that they've added "various other fixes and improvements" to Netbot.Netbot 1.1 offers push notification, post search originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Mon, 29 Oct 2012 17:00:00 EST. Cleveland Clinic and IBM team up to make Watson a Doctor (video)

Medical research facility Cleveland Clinic and IBM are teaming up to develop ways to let supercomputer Watson become a useful tool for doctors. The machine's ability to analyze language and scour its database for answers is hoped to offer quicker and more exhaustive diagnoses for patients. As modern medical students spend less time memorizing diseases, they're focusing on learning how to think critically and navigate the huge amount of available data. Big Blue is also hoping that the Jeopardy champion will learn how to digest a person's medical records in order to match up their history with maladies. We're just nervous that someone will give Watson a telepresence robot and send him out onto the wards -- you'd be worried about his bedside manner if you've seen his ruthless quizzing manner.Continue reading Cleveland Clinic and IBM team up to make Watson a Doctor (video)Filed under: Science, AltCleveland Clinic and IBM team up to make Watson a Doctor (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 30 Oct 2012 15:46:00 EDT. Nintendo reveals digital benefits of Deluxe Wii U bundle

Just a couple of weeks before launch, Nintendo has revealed the digital benefits of purchasing a Wii U Deluxe set.The set, which costs $50 more than the Basic model, comes with a number of hardware upgrades and accesries, which have long been known. The system itself is in the black colorway, there is 32GB of internal memory (compared to 8GB for the basic), the console comes with NintendoLand, and Nintendo is including a charging cradle and stand for the tablet controller, as well as a stand for the system itself.Alongside those upgrades, if you opt for the Deluxe set, you get digital promotions, as well. Gamers will earn 10 percent of their purchase back in points at the Nintendo eShop, for everything they purchase. For every 500 points, you receive $5 in eShop money to spend as you please, making it a pretty solid deal if you were planning to buy some titles that cost $59.99 right off the bat.The deal starts December 3rd and will end on December 31st of 2014, with point exchange being open until March 2015.Of course, you will need to have a NintendoID and have the Wii U connected to the Internet to take advantage of the deal.(written by Andre Yoskowitz)Permalink | Comments

Sony goes Red-hunting with PMW-F55 and PMW-F5 pro CineAlta 4K Super 35mm sensor camcorders

Having seen some of its high-end cinema camera thunder stolen by the likes of Red and Arri, Sony has just launched a pair of CineAlta PL-mount cameras with brand new Super 35mm sensors: The PMW-F5 and PMW-F55. Though both pack 4K CMOS imagers, there are some major differences -- the higher-end PMW-F55 has a global shutter, wider color gamut and can capture 4k, 2k or HD video internally, while the PMW-F5 records 2k and HD natively with a rolling shutter (4k requires an optional RAW recorder, below). Depending on the level of quality you want, there are several ways to capture video to each camcorder. MPEG-4 H.264 video or Sony's SR MPEG-4 SStP can be recorded onto Sony's new SxS PRO+ media, or if RAW quality is desired, there's the new AXS-R5 Access Memory System for 2K / 4K RAW capture -- which will also work with the current NEX-FS700. Using the latter system, the PMW-F5 is capable of grabbing up to 120fps slow motion RAW HD video, while the PMW-F55 can capture 240fps at 2k, putting it squarely in Epic-X territory. The new camcorders will arrive in February 2013, and while Sony hasn't outed pricing yet, it'll likely be well under the flagship 4k CineAlta F65's formidable $65k sticker. Check the PR after the break to get the entire technical skinny. This might not be the $199 Tegra 3 tablet that NVIDIA's keen to see, but hey, a 999 yuan ($160) quad-core phone is just as impressive. Unveiled in China earlier today, this ZTE U950 smartphone packs a 1.3GHz Tegra 3 chip, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage and a 2,000mAh battery beneath the 4.3-inch display. There's also a five-megapixel camera plus a VGA front-facing camera inside the 9mm-thick body. Pretty standard stuff for an Android 4.0 phone, except for the price-per-performance ratio, of course. Must See HDTV (October 29th - November 4th)

While the fall sports have taken the center stage, there's still plenty of other content to fill the schedule. Assassin's Creed 3 hits consoles this week, as well as the return of Okami in HD, while indie flicks Safety Not Guaranteed and Ruby Sparks are available on Blu-ray. Comedian Louis CK will take the stage on Saturday Night Live, and a collection of Alfred Hitchcock movies comes home in a new boxed set. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames. NBA After a whirlwind summer that saw the Heat complete their quest to win an NBA Championship (despite a lockout-shortened season) and the Olympic team bring home basketball gold medals, it's time for NBA action again. The season officially resumes Tuesday night as the Celtics take on the Heat and the Mavericks face the Lakers on TNT. There's a full slate of other interesting games awaiting including the debut of #1 draft pick Anthony Davis on the Hornets and more. We've got plenty of storylines to follow like Linsanity's move to Houston, Miami's quest to repeat and Dwight Howard joining Kobe, Steve and Pau on the Lakers. (October 30th, TNT, 8PM) Saturday Night Live w/ Louis CK Comedian Louis CK has seen his popularity blow up as of late thanks to his cable show and an internet distributed show that set records. Now he's hosting Saturday Night Live, which should go well, and if it doesn't, then it will provide plenty of material for the next season of his show which is scheduled to air in 2014. (November 3rd, NBC, 11:30PM) Alabama/LSU college football Last year Alabama LSU played in the regular season before meeting again in the championship game, and while that seems less likely to occur this time around it's still an SEC matchup worth keeping an eye on. Currently ranked first and fifth, respectively, in the BCS it will be one of the key matchups this season and provides an opportunity for LSU to redeem itself for last year's losses -- not that Nick Saban and Alabama will make doing that easy. Pandora app gets major redesign on Android and iOS with new social features

Numerically, going from version 3.2 of an app to 4.0 makes much more sense than starting at 1.7. But, Pandora won't let a little thing like logic stand in its way. Today both the iOS and Android editions of the internet radio app are being updated to 4.0, regardless of the latter's lagging version number. 4.0 brings with it a significant refresh of the UI which Pandora bills as "uniform," though we'd call them feature equivalent instead. "Uniform" implies that the apps look exactly the same, when in fact they adhere to the to the design language of their respective platforms. In addition to a new look there's a lot of new capabilities baked in, including quicker access to genre stations and the ability to rename stations you've created. There's also a new personal music profile that offers a detailed timeline of your listening habits, which you can share with others. (You can also keep your profile private, just in case you're embarrassed about that Quad City DJ's station you're always listening to.) The new social angle is highlighted with a music feed page that lets you see what your friends and people with similar tastes are listening too. Hit up Google Play and iTunes to update now, and don't miss the gallery below and the PR after the break. Neil Young leaves Ngmoco

Well it's the end of an era for one of iOS' first big companies. It was just about four years ago that I posted here in this very space that former EA executive Neil Young (no relation) was going to start up a company called ng:moco, and it was soon after that he published the breakout hit Rolando, following it up with the freemium title We Rule and eventually creating an empire (and changing the way a lot of people think about freemium games). Over the years, however, ngmoco has fallen from its peak in popularity, as it was acquired by the Japanese social gaming giant DeNA, and then decided to focus mostly on bringing cheap ports of that company's games over to Android instead.

And now, Neil Young and cofounder Bob Stevenson have decided to leave the company, moving on to what they hope will be "their next adventure." They leave Clive Downie in the position of CEO with the company, another former EA VP who's been with ngmoco for a little while now.

Ngmoco certainly inspired quite a bit of hate from players -- the company's focus on freemium games left more traditional titles like Rolando in the dust, and its acquisition of venerated Mac publisher Freeverse essentially resulted in the death of that classic brand. But ngmoco's popularity during the rise of iOS is also undeniable, and Young's ideas on freemium gaming have been adopted by many, many App Store game developers working today. It remains to be seen what Young's next project will be, but there's no question that, by starting up ngmoco, he's left an indelible mark on the short history of Apple's iOS platform already.Neil Young leaves Ngmoco originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 16:30:00 EST. It isn't the first time Mountain View has lent its mapping tech to folks in harm's way -- survivors of Hurricane Issac used a similar Crisis Map to track the storm, follow public alerts and find shelters. Sandy's map is no different, providing locals with information on the storm's path, forecast information, evacuation routes, areas of high wind probability and even links to webcams surrounding affected areas. Google isn't the only firm lending a hand, either -- both the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal are lifting site paywalls during the storm, ensuring the public has access to developing news as long as their internet connection doesn't give out.Filed under: Internet, GoogleGoogle puts Hurricane Sandy on its crisis map, hopes to help you weather the storm originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 28 Oct 2012 20:13:00 EDT. Logitech Broadcaster Wi-Fi Webcam test drive

Whether you use Skype or FaceTime, or you do a weekly video podcast, the quality of the video camera you use is important. It also helps to have more than one camera to switch between, for variety and to make your video look more professional. Most webcams are USB-based, and I've often found that HD cams can actually "overload" the USB bus so that only one can be used at a time.

That's why the Logitech Broadcaster Wi-Fi Webcam (US$199.99) is such a pleasant surprise. By using a Wi-Fi connection to beam 720p HD video to your Mac or iOS device, it's possible to use two or more HD cameras at the same time. The Wi-Fi connectivity also makes it possible to place the camera anywhere -- there's no need to be tethered to a computer.

Design

The design of the Logitech Broadcaster is quite different from other webcams we've tested. The camera is a rather small black rectangular object with a lens and lamp in the front, mode and lamp buttons on the side, and external microphone, micro-USB port (for charging and setup), and power button on the back. On the bottom is a hemispherical bump for placing the camera on its stand (more about that in a minute), and on the top is a large round capture button, a Wi-Fi signal strength indicator, and a battery level indicator.

Gallery: Logitech Broadcaster Wi-Fi Webcam

The camera comes with a cylindrical hard plastic carrying case that also serves as a stand. That bump on the bottom of the camera fits into a dimple on the top of the case, and there's a magnet that holds the two securely together. Adjustment is simple; just move the camera to a position that's useful and it stays there. The bottom of the carrying case lid has a tripod screw mount, so the entire assembly can be put on a tripod.

I like the idea of the hard case. It holds the camera very securely and keeps it from being damaged during transit, and works as a mini-tripod. Very ingenious!

Functionality

Enough about how it looks; how does it work? To use the Broadcaster, you need to download the Logitech Broadcaster app (for Mac or iPad) to your appropriate device. Once installed, that app is used to set up the camera for use.

You don't actually have to connect the Broadcaster to your device to set it up. The app takes you through the process one step at a time, starting with turning the Broadcaster on, giving the camera a name to identify it and giving the app your Wi-Fi password. Once you've done that, it displays a QR code that you point the camera at, pressing the large capture button until the camera beeps. A few seconds later, it is ready to use with your device.

Logitech has designed the Broadcaster to work seamlessly with Ustream, the streaming video service that we use for TUAW TV Live. In fact, once you've set up the Broadcaster to work with Ustream, you don't even need to use a Mac or iOS device to stream your video (assuming you're still in range of the configured WiFi network). Just turn on the camera and press the capture button, and you're on the air.

Of course, if you're doing video podcasting or making VoIP calls, you'll need to have some other app open. I found that just about every Mac app I tried -- FaceTime, Skype, Wirecast, Ustream Producer (a version of Wirecast), Wirecast for YouTube, PhotoBooth, Boinx TV, Camtasia, and Motion FX -- worked fine with the camera. In some cases, particularly with the Wirecast apps, the video resolution seemed to be stuck in non-HD modes, but that is most likely an issue with the apps not recognizing the camera as an HD device.

Speaking of modes, the mode button described earlier is used for one thing only -- using the device to broadcast directly to Ustream.

The color and picture quality of the Broadcaster is excellent. I currently use a Logitech C910 HD webcam for TUAW TV Live, and the Broadcaster does as good a job as the wired camera. One concern I would have is how the camera would work in conditions with high network traffic, for example when an live HD stream is being broadcast from a Mac and the camera is is trying to send a stream as well.

With the iPhone and iPad app, I found I had some difficulties connecting to the camera unless the Mac or other device was completely asleep and the camera was restarted. In fact, I was never able to connect to the camera from my iPhone, getting a "Camera Disconnected" message every time. The iPad worked very well.

The app provides a way to record or to broadcast to UStream from your iOS device. When recording, the video can be captured in 360p, 480p, or 720p resolution. The app provides a way to monitor the battery level of the camera as well -- I found the battery to last about three hours in actual use without using the light, although part of that time the camera wasn't actually streaming.

For doing livestreams, the combination of the Broadcaster and the iOS app is a winner. I can easily imagine using an iPad and Broadcaster to do "live remotes" from locations with Wi-Fi -- this would be perfect for broadcasting seminars or conferences.

One final note: this really is the perfect webcam for anyone with either a Mac mini or Mac Pro who isn't using an Apple Thunderbolt Display with the built-in FaceTime HD camera. It won't take up a port on your device, can be moved anywhere in your workspace, and is easy to take on the road.

Conclusion

While many people will probably be happy with using the built-in FaceTime camera on their Mac or iOS device, there's definitely an market for external HD video cameras. The Logitech Broadcaster should be at the top of any video podcaster's shopping list, as it provides a well-designed wireless option to the webcam market.

Pros

Lightweight design with a dual-purpose hard case that both protects and supports the camera

Good battery life -- enough to do a two-hour show on a single charge

Excellent integration and compatibility with the Mac and iPad

Easy setup, doesn't require a USB tether to a device to set up

Logitech Broadcaster software is free and easy to use

Can be set up to broadcast to Ustream without a computer

Cons

Price is significantly higher than most USB webcams

Could not get the camera to work with the Broadcaster app on an iPhone 4S

Who is it for?

Anyone who needs a primary or secondary HD webcam for videoconferencing or video podcasting who needs the flexibility afforded by being able to place the camera well away from a computer. Also, anyone who would like a way to do broadcasts via Ustream without the need for a computer.Logitech Broadcaster Wi-Fi Webcam test drive originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Sun, 28 Oct 2012 18:00:00 EST. iMpulse keychain game controller and key finder gains Kickstarter funding

The iMpulse keychain game controller and key finder has gained Kickstarter funded status with pledges of more than double what it needed. The iMpulse is a rather neat looking game controller but where this one differs to all of the others that have come and gone is in the size department. The iMpulse is tiny and is designed to go everywhere your keys go as it comes with its own keychain. On top of being a game controller with dedicated buttons and joystick, it also acts as a key finder to help you find your keys too. iMpulse is the SMALLEST wireless controller for mobile devices - it's also a key finder & media controller! (iPhone/iPad, Android, PCs) The iMpulse is built for mobile gaming. You can ALREADY play hundreds of iOS and Android games on the iMpulse, and we're constantly adding support for more games! The iMpulse is cute, tough, and kicks butt. You can finally play games like Temple Run, Pac-Man, Air Attack HD, and Dynamite Jack with the true tactile response of real trigger buttons, while you slide the thumbstick with abandon. NO MORE having to dodge your own thumb to SEE where you're trying to go. If all of these features were not enough, the iMpulse can also be used to control media playback and become a remote camera shutter controller too. If you like the look of the iMpulse, it?s not too late to become an early adopter. You can be one of the first to get your hands on one by pledging at least $25; be quick as there are only six days left to go. The iMpulse has already attracted nearly $100,000 of pledges so has almost doubled its pledge target for funding. What do you think of the iMpulse? US Navy tests first 11-meter missile-firing sea drone (video)

Advances in unmanned military tools and vehicles have come on leaps and bounds, but, until now, we haven't seen a weapon firing drone operating in the seas. A recent test taking part offshore near Maryland saw several missiles launched from a new remote-controlled inflatable-hulled ship. While the Navy has used drones before for mine clearing and other defensive tasks, the small boat (similar to that pictured above) is the first experiment to involve true offensive capabilities. The almost zodiac-like craft has been an ongoing project over recent years, and contains a fully automated system which the Navy calls a "Precision Engagement Module" which uses an Mk-49 mounting with a dual missile launcher manufactured by Rafael. The hope is that such vehicles could patrol the coastline, or serve as a first defense against pirates, and other such small, fast-moving seafaring dangers. If you want to catch it in action, head past the break for the video, but don't be fooled. While it might look like a series of misses, the Navy claims this is just a trick of the camera angle, with all six missiles apparently making contact.Continue reading US Navy tests first 11-meter missile-firing sea drone (video)Filed under: Robots, TransportationUS Navy tests first 11-meter missile-firing sea drone (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 28 Oct 2012 05:18:00 EDT. Casio unveils Android-based tablet, scanner hybrid

Casio has unveiled a new enterprise Android tablet that will also double as a scanner.Dubbed the "Paper Writer," the tablet has a front-facing camera that faces downward, allowing it to take images of any documents placed directly in front of the device. Built in is special software for character recognition that works with hand-written notes and uses symbols as tags for saving. As long as the paper being scanned has "reasonable contrast" to the ink, you should have no issues with scanning. Early reviews say there is a business card feature as well, although it is still buggy. The base model will sell for $2500 in Japan in November, boasting a 10-inch screen, a low end dual-core 1.5GHz OMAP processor, a large 7000mAh battery and a rubberized case for water and shock resistance. An American and European launch is set for later in the year.Check the video here of the tablet in action:Permalink | Comments

Dutch copyright fee on electronics is too low, content owners say

Fee up to ?5 per device is too low, apparently.Earlier this week, the Dutch authorities decided to OK a levy on the sales of consumer electronics equipment - namely computers, smartphones, set top boxes, audio and video equipment and hard drive storage - to cover losses for content creators from "home copying."The fee varies, but is as high as ? for a new PC, for example. According to two groups representing the content industries, Buma/Stemra and Stichting Thuiskopie, the fee of ?5 is actually too low. This appears to be a direct contradiction of figures from accountancy firm PriceWaterHouseCoopers, which estimated the loss from home copying in the country at about ?12.1 million. By comparison, the new levies are expected to generate about ?27 million.A Dutch law passed in 2005 also introduced levies on purchases of blank media and MP3 players. Content owners now feel that newer technology is leading to far more home copying, and much higher losses.Permalink | Comments

CrackBerry Asks: Which notification do you check first?

Which notification do you check first? Today's question comesright out of the CrackBerry forums, and I'm really curious to see just how it pans out. Hypothetical situation (well, maybe not for some of you). You get notifications for multiple things at the same time - SMS, BBM, voicemail, Facebook, Twitter and email ... which do you check first? If you're like me you most certainly have a pecking order for checking notifications. Personally, I'd go voicemail, SMS, email, Twitter and Facebook. I very rarely get voicemail so that's why it takes the number one spot. We want to know what you would check first. Is SMS top priority? Facebook? Twitter? Noteshelf for iPad brings calligraphy pens, pencils, custom colors, and more

Noteshelf is by far one of our favorite note-taking apps here at iMore and now it's even better than ever. A recent update has introduced pencils and calligraphy pens to the selection of writing tools, and as if Noteshelf didn't already have enough colors to choose from, you can now bring up a color pallet to get the exact color you want or choose from millions of online pallets from ColourLovers.com. In addition to the new writing tools, Noteshelf now lets your create notebook covers from your own photos and has improved landscape support and a more flexible page thumbnail view. Although it's not mentioned in the update notes, I have also noticed that if you want to cut a section of your notes, you are not limited to a rectangular shape but can outline exactly what area you wish to cut -- this is a huge improvement for my use. Noteshelf now also supports the following pressure sensitive stylii: Adonit Jot Touch, Pogo Connect and Hex Jaja styli. To celebrate the new update, Ramki is having a sale and Noteshelf is currently available for just $2.99 (normally $5.99). Here comes Hurricane Sandy: Charge 'em if you got 'em

OK, boys and girls on the East Cost. Listen up. Hurricane Sandy's on her way, and she's liable to make a mess of things next week. Just how bad depends on who you're reading, but regardless it's time to start getting ready. Here's how your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad can help. Charge your iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads. Now. Keep them charged. And once the storm starts, keep them off. You'll likely lose power at some point, and there's a good chance your local cell network will go down for a bit, even with generator backups. Spare batteries. You can't swap batteries in Apple products, but you can get external batteries. If you got 'em, make sure they're charged, too. If you still have time to get some, do it. Car charger. Get one. Get a couple, actually. After the storm, text messages may work best. If the network's up, it's going to be clogged, and calls might not go through. iMessage might not go through. Text messages have a much better chance. If you're worried about damage and don't have a traditional camera, use your phone to take a few pictures of your home and your belongings. It'll make insurance claims much easier, should it come to that. While you still have power and internet access, be it on your phone or broadbad, take advantage of features like instant uploading on Photo Stream, Google+, or Dropbox to make sure those pictures get somewhere that can't be destroyed by the storm. Better to be safe than sorry in that case. If you just have to use Instagram during a storm, don't use a damn filter. Folks wanna see what's happening, and filters don't help that. Use apps like Evernote to help keep track of your emergency supplies. Before the storm, use those gas-finder apps to track down the cheapest petrol. That won't help you with the lines, but it may save you a few bucks. Apps from FEMA and the Red Cross can help you find shelters and other emergency information. Those are but a few ways your iPhone or iPad can get you through this. Have a tip you'd like to share? Let's hear 'em in the comments! And good luck, everyone. Stay safe. HurricaneTips and How-To

Samsung Rolls Out New Functions for TecTile App

Samsung today announced version 3.0 of its TecTile application for Android devices. The new application significantly boosts the functionality of the TecTile stickers by allowing Samsung smartphone owners to do more with them. For example, the new TecTile app allows users to program multiple functions for a single tag, customize profiles via tags, store TecTile tag history, create private TectTile tags, and unlock locked TecTiles. TecTiles can also be set to do things such as share electronic business cards, forward a call to a predetermined number, or playback specific music tracks in the media player. TecTile 3.0 is a free download from the Google Play Store. Samsung sells the TecTiles in packs of 5 for $14.99 at AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile USA stores. TecTiles originally launched on the Galaxy S III, but Samsung said that the TecTiles app is now compatible with a wide array of its handsets, including the Galaxy Note II, Galaxy Note, Galaxy S II, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, and others.

Brainstorming BB10: You control the OS... it doesn't control you

Continuing down the path ofBrainstorming BB10on theDev Alpha Bhardware, next up we're taking a look at how you can really "manipulate" the OS. At this point I think all of us are getting familiar with the flowing nature of theBlackBerry 10. The flow is apparent as you move in and out of apps and peek into BlackBerry Hub. And we also looked at how the theflow experience continues within apps, as you can swipe back layers of the app with no need to tap a back button. Long story short, the flow rocks. Beyond the flow, you also get this feeling as you use the BlackBerry 10 operating system that it really bends to your wishes as you swipe your fingers around. You can manipulate things on the screen that you might not think you'd be able to. In the video above I illustrate this notion within the calendar app and in the camera app, while browsing between photos. read moreCrackBerry.com's feed sponsored by ShopCrackBerry.com. A quick hands on with the newly updated LinkedIn app for BlackBerry smartphones

We posted last night that Version 2.0 of the LinkedIn application had been released and now actually works, as opposed to the previous version which didn't seem to like any of my devices. This morning the update showed up for me so I swiftly downloaded it (for free) and it seems that they have made a pretty nice job of things. I clearly have nothing to compare it to but the user interface is friendly, crisp and smooth. As you will see in the video - the main screen is made up of the 'LinkedIn Today' section at the top and then followed by recent updates. Clicking on the LinkedIn icon in the top left corner takes you to a nice page made up of four large tiles. These are updates, You, Inbox and Network. Connecting with people and sharing an update works perfectly however I'm not convinced it is perfect as there are no notifications that come with the app, or if there are they do not work. Thanks to a couple of the CrackBerry team members I have sent messages through the app and received an email response but nothing from the app itself. Notifications would be great, but at least we now have an app we can use. Oh well, one step at a time. AccuWeather launches for Windows 8, lets you know if it's dry outside the Metro

So you're finally getting that Surface tablet (or a Windows 8 PC of choice) and have decided that a basic weather app just won't do it justice. AccuWeather agrees with you -- after months of supporting the Windows 8 preview editions, it's formally launching a weather app that takes advantage of Microsoft's completed Metro Windows 8 interface in all its widescreen glory. The title both provides near-obsessive detail about the climate as well as the requisite live tile for an at-a-glance check. You also won't have to resort to the web to find out if it's raining in your neighborhood: a Bing Maps radar overlay shows if it's safe to leave the umbrella at home. The app is free to download, which makes it entirely too easy to check the weather through Windows instead of the window.Continue reading AccuWeather launches for Windows 8, lets you know if it's dry outside the MetroFiled under: SoftwareAccuWeather launches for Windows 8, lets you know if it's dry outside the Metro originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 07:00:00 EDT. Apple?s 4th Gen iPad And The Pain And Power Of The Unpredictable Upgrade Cycle

Apple announced a new iPad at its event on Tuesday, one that wasn't mini, and one that wasn't presented as a a stop-gap or mid-cycle replacement. The fourth generation iPad, as it's called, was pitched as a full-fledged successor to the "new iPad" introduced in March 2012, which has some people frustrated. So why the change and what does it mean for Apple's iPad upgrade cycle going forward?

Apple?s Q4 2012: iPad Sales Miss Expectations With 14 Million Units Sold

Apple managed to sell a lot of iOS devices over the last three months. But iPad sales are still declining. They are down 17.6 percent to 14 million compared to 17 million in Q3 ? a bit more than expected. Analysts expected at least 15.55 million units, and sometimes more. Apple missed on those sales.

iFixit tears down 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro, rates it two grumpy kittens for repairability

You know the drill (er, screwdriver): someone releases a shiny new gadget and the internet tears it apart, both figuratively and literally. iFixit did the latter like clockwork, getting its tools on the new 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display. As with its older sibling, the notebook didn't do all that well on the repairability scale, scoring a two out of 10 -- slightly better than its predecessor's lowly one. Why so low? You can blame a glued battery, proprietary screws, soldered RAM and a display assembly that's "almost impossible to take apart." There are, however, plenty of pictures of a tiny kitten, which should help to ease the pain...Filed under: LaptopsiFixit tears down 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro, rates it two grumpy kittens for repairability originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 25 Oct 2012 08:39:00 EDT. Breaking Good? Scientists Want to Crowdfund a Research Meth Lab

An evolutionary pharmacologist and Princeton University research fellow Ethan O. Perlstein is asking for online support to fund a scientific 'meth lab' in order to take a deep dive into how amphetamines affect the human brain.
No, it's not a strange plot twist of AMC's hit show Breaking Bad. Perlstein, who earned his doctorate degree from Harvard University, and his collaborator David Sulzer, a professor at Columbia Medical School, started a RocketHub crowdfunding page on October 4 to back a project that could solve a "long-standing puzzle in mental health research."
The goal of the project is to find how amphetamines -- including methamphetamin… Continue reading...

Roundup: Hands-on with Apple's new hardware

You probably can't wait to play with all the newly announced Apple hardware that you heard about today, right? Well, you can't, at least not yet. Thankfully, there were plenty of people at the event who did get to go hands-on with the slim and sexy new gadgets, and they can't wait to tell you what they thought about them. Here's a peak at just what they're saying.

The iPad mini

Engadget: "The device itself is precisely what you'd expect it to be: a slightly shrunken iPad, with a rear that resembles the new iPod touch. It's aluminum-clad, finely polished and equipped with a 7.9-inch LCD (1,024 x 768). The volume rocker, orientation / mute switch and bottom-mounted speakers are graciously borrowed from the conventional iPad, while the rest of the exterior maintains a pretty familiar look. No, there's no touch sensitive bezel (à la PlayBook), wireless charging or USB 3.0 support -- if you were looking for breakthrough hardware additions, you'll be sorely disappointed."

The Verge: "Like most Apple products, the build of the smaller tablet is excellent, easily surpassing the competition on the market. By comparison, the Nexus 7 and Fire HD feel like toys. Other manufacturers are going to have to up their game with this product in town. It's just a striking difference in materials and solidness."

Mashable: "You have to wonder if Apple could have gone the extra mile and made the iPad mini a full-on Retina device. It wouldn't have taken that many more pixels to push it over the edge. But that's a common behavior for this company -- leave the next level just out of reach, ready for the upgrade (likely next year, around the same time as the fifth-generation iPad)."

Ars Technica: "Indeed, it's a smaller version of the iPad, but in use, the iPad mini doesn't "seem" significantly smaller. Apple claims you can hold the device with one hand, which may be technically true for some of our larger-handed readers. For me, it was just barely doable, but still possible."

The new iMac

Engadget: "It's hard to overstate just how phenomenal this machine looks in the flesh. It's also unbelievably thin -- we'd be impressed if it were simply a new Cinema Display, but the fact that a computer is in there really takes it over the top. At $1,299, you'll be hard-pressed to find a sexier all-in-one (assuming you don't need an inbuilt optical drive, of course)."

The Verge: "Although Apple isn't calling this panel a "Retina display," the techniques and appearance of this panel are pretty close to Retina-level: the laminated front glass and anti-glare treatments make images look like they're lying right on top of the screen, and the same scaling options you get on a Retina MacBook Pro are present in system preferences."

Ars Technica: "As a current iMac owner, I did feel like the screen seemed less reflective than what I'm used to, although real world use would tell us more about the reality of that claim. Overall I was impressed by the design and wish I had the budget to replace my current machine."

GigaOM: "The two models on display were top of the line and it was easy to imagine that they would be speedy. However, nothing prepares you for the hybrid Fusion Drive Apple is using in this device. Apple's iTunes by far is the worst application on my old iMac and that is why I clicked on it first. And it open almost instantly -- it felt faster than the iTunes on my flash-drive based Macbook Air"

13-inch MacBook Pro Retina

Engadget: "Compared to the 1,280 x 800 resolution of the non-Retina 13-inch MBP, the new display is particularly stunning. Text has never looked more crisp, and colors are stupendously vibrant. Of course, apps, websites and graphics that haven't been optimized for Retina still look like utter rubbish, and as more Apple machines transition to these panels, the outcry is going to get even louder."

SlashGear: "We've been wowed before with Retina-level graphics, and the new MacBook Pro delivers the same impact. The mode most often used isn't actually stretching things to 2,560 x 1,600, but instead offering an on-paper lower resolution but with smoother graphics all round. The result is clean icons and text of the sort you'll struggle to find on a Windows notebook."

Laptop: "While other notebook-makers are busy churning out Windows 8 hybrids with touch screens, Apple is bringing its jaw-dropping Retina display to a laptop you can take anywhere. The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display ($1,699) feels like the ultimate Ultrabook in person, thanks to its 2,560 x 1,600-pixel screen."

So what do you think? Out of all the things that Apple revealed today, what most caught your eye? CineXPlayerHD plays just about any video format on your iPad

CineXPlayerHD is a jack-of-all-trades iPad app (US$3.99) that can play just about any video format you throw at it. This latest version, 3.0, adds playback of the popular MKV format on the iPad 2 and above.

The app supports 720P HD playback, and also Dolby Digital Plus with support for 5.1 channels, and Dolby Mobile for surround on Dolby-equipped headphones. Within the app there's a way to catalog your movie collection, and to create playlists.

Movies can be loaded through iTunes or they can be played back from a network drive via streaming. There is a built in web browser so you can navigate to your source files on your network. The app plays back AVI, MOV, M4V, 3GP and MP4 as well as Xvid.

There is also subtitle support with the ability to drag the text to different parts of the screen.

I don't have lots of different formats on hand, but the player did fine with some AVI files and some MOV files I created from DVDs. I was able to output the video to my Apple TV and everything looked fine with good sync between audio and video. The app also provides for some extra features as an in-app purchase. One for enhanced security, another to convert Xvid videos to 3D. Both plugs-ins are $0.99, but neither are required for most users.

CineXPlayer is a welcome addition if you are into video, and have files that the Apple supplied video player just won't play.

CineXPlayer requires an iPad running iOS 4.3 or later, and you will only get 720P playback on an iPad 2 or better. The app seems well worth the $3.99 price, and it should appeal to many who use their iPad for video playback. Check the gallery for some screen shots.
