UCLA creates portable microscope that uses holograms, not lenses

Instead of lugging a heavy microscope into the field, doctors and nurses in remote regions may have a more portable choice -- a lightweight microscope that replaces lenses with holograms. Researchers at UCLA announced a prototype dual-mode microscope that's lightweight, costs between $50 and $100 to produce and is similar in size to a banana. Like a hologram that uses interfering rays to create an image, this device shines light on a sample where its sensor chip (apparently also found in iPhones and BlackBerrys) and a cloud-based software program analyze the interference pattern and reconstruct an image of the sample. Since it's dual-mode, both large samples and small samples can be analyzed through processes called "transmission" and "reflection," and doctors could potentially use their laptops or smartphones to access the images remotely. Although still considered a prototype, researchers think the development has the opportunity to revolutionize health care by allowing doctors to test things like water, blood and food. Check out the full PR after the break.Continue reading UCLA creates portable microscope that uses holograms, not lensesUCLA creates portable microscope that uses holograms, not lenses originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 31 Aug 2011 20:17:00 EDT. Apple contributing to Chinese pollution, environmentalists say

Five environmental organizations in China have issued a report accusing Apple of contributing to the country’s pollution by providing business to suppliers that have “public records of environmental violations,” the Financial Times reported on Wednesday. The environmentalists attempted to contact 29 different tech companies in an effort to coerce the firms into cleaning up their supply chains but said Apple was unresponsive. Apple is reportedly taking “advantage of the loopholes in developing countries’ environmental management systems” to create its products. Factories for Kaedar Electronics and Unimicron Electronics are being blamed for increased cancer rates and pollution in the Chinese city of Kunshan. In addition, increased air pollution has forced parents to send their children to schools outside the city. Read

iOS 5 beta 7 goes live for developers

Well, you can't say Cupertino isn't being consistent. Just like last time, Apple's gone and released a new beta of iOS 5, less than two weeks after the last one. Not much of interest pops out of build 9A5313E's release notes, but we'd presume it squashes a fair share of bugs. Hit up settings to begin the roughly 70MB OTA update, or test those browser downloading skills at the dev portal linked below. And while you're there, don't forget to snag updated versions of Xcode, iTunes, and an updated firmware for the second-generation AppleTV. Peep a screenshot of the OTA after the break and let us know how you fare in comments.

Samsung Chromebooks Drop In Price: Deadpool Or New Models? UPDATE

The long-awaited Chromebooks finally hit retails in June but they're already seeing significant price reductions. Both Acer and Samsung entered the market with modestly priced options with the Samsung models commanding a slight premium. But not anymore. Amazon just dropped the price on the Samsung Chromebooks by 7% to 10% with the WiFi-only model now costing $399 and the 3G model running $449. That's down from their MSRP of $429 and $499, respectively. With Chrome OS still in its infancy and niche products not lasting very long in today's market, it makes you wonder if Google or its hardware partners are slowly giving up hope on the platform or simply prepping for new models.

Update: Statement from Samsung added after the jump.

DJ Sound Control computer mod redefines luggable

Few would look at Lenovo's decidedly ordinary A700 all-in-one desktop and think: DJ rig, but then you wouldn't be PC modder Chris Blarsky (of the Hulk PC mod fame). After four months of work, he's managed to transform the 23-inch system into the so-called DJ Sound Control rig you see above, which comes complete with sliding drawer to accommodate a keyboard or other DJ gear in case the slew of built-in options aren't enough for you, not to mention a separate I/O box that also doubles as a power supply (also of the luggable variety). Hit the source link below for a closer look, although you might want to grab a cup of coffee while the this particular experiment in Flash excess loads.DJ Sound Control computer mod redefines luggable originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 29 Aug 2011 15:54:00 EDT. iPhone camera being used for traffic light testing

A group of researchers at MIT and Princeton University are testing to figure out how to best save fuel when stopping and re-starting cars at traffic lights, and they're using the iPhone to do so. The smartphone is mounted on the car's dashboard, and uses the camera and GPS information in a system called SignalGuru that tells the driver when it's best to slow the car down in order to save fuel (so you're not always revving up the engine and then having to put on the brakes when the next light pops up). The system works, apparently, and in Cambridge, MA testing, fuel consumption was cut down by 20 percent.

The system was also tested in Singapore, where most traffic lights change the length they're displayed based on the traffic around them. In that area, as opposed to the US (where lights are generally on fixed schedules), the prediction mechanism didn't work quite as well. It was off by up to two seconds, say the researchers.

It sounds like any indication can be helpful. It's hard to see if this is something that could eventually make its way to the consumer market -- more likely it would be used in commercial vehicles as a solution. But you never know -- if the system works on an iPhone and there's an in-car mount that's standardized enough to work at the right angles, your phone could be telling you when to slow down on the road, and saving you money at the same time.

Salesforce CEO Benioff "gifted" App Store trademark and domain to Jobs

In an interview with Bloomberg, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff tells an interesting tale of how he gave the App Store domain and trademark to to Apple as a gift to Steve Jobs. Of course, the App Store trademark itself is now under scrutiny, with Microsoft and Amazon claiming it is a generic term.

Apparently Benioff and some of his team met with Jobs in 2003, and Steve suggested they build an ecosystem around their Salesforce product, which Jobs praised. They wound up with App Exchange, but Benioff also trademarked App Store and bought the domain. When Apple launched an app ecosystem for the iPhone, Benioff was in the audience during the announcement. He went directly to Jobs at the event and said he was giving Apple the trademark and domain as a gift, thanking him for his sage advice in 2003.

It's a nice story, and sadly the kind of nice thing you don't hear that often in Silicon Valley these days.

BlackBerry Soft Shell Case for the BlackBerry Bold 9930 / 9900 Review

The BlackBerry Soft Shell Case for the BlackBerry Bold 9930 / 9900!

The Soft Shell Case for the BlackBerry Bold 9930 / 9900 Looks Great from all angles, including head on!

I'm absolutely LOVING my BlackBerry Bold 9900 and have been testing out and putting to use every case and accessory I can get my hands-on for this beauty of a BlackBerry. I've never been one to worry too much about my BlackBerry getting scuffed, but with its stainless steel band and iconic styling this is a BlackBerry I really want to take care, as will you.

For everyday basic protection without sacrificing usability, the BlackBerry Soft Shell Case for the Bold 9930 / 9900 is a great option. Available in Black, Translucent, Green, Brown and Indigio color options, it securely fits the new Bold while providing access to all ports, buttons and the camera. This isn't your typical rubbery BlackBerry skin. Rather, the Soft Shell case is made from a high-performance, flexible, plastic-like material, which gives the back and sides of the 9900 / 9930 a protective barrier against accidental bumps and scratches. The case is pretty minimal in thickness, keeping the overall size of the phone as close to original as possible. Overall I've found it to be a really nice case. It feels nice in the hand, doesn't mess with the usability, and you definitely feel better knowing you won't be scratching up that carbon fiber battery door when you put the phone down on a table or counter. It's a really nice, tight fitting design - unless you're looking at a cut out for a port, you almost wouldn't realize there is a case on the phone.

The BlackBerry Bold 9930/9900 Soft Shell case has a list price of $19.99, but you can get it for less at ShopCrackBerry.com. With such high demand for Bold 9930/9900 cases it's been hard to keep inventory stock, but you can still order now for first crack at the new shipments and we're even giving away a chance for you to win one for free (details below). Keep reading for more photos and details surrounding this awesome case.

Klipsch intros Image S4A in-ears, lets Android users feel the in-line remote love

There's no question Klipsch's S4 in-ear headphone line has some of the best to be had for under $100, yet aside from its iPhone-compatible S4i variant, mobile phone users wanting an in-line remote's benefits were outta luck. Well, it looks like times are a-changin' as an Android-oriented version of the noise-isolating buds, appropriately dubbed S4A, has popped up for pre-order on Klipsch's site. The remote's compatible down to Android 2.1 and appears to be slightly tweaked from the S4i with less buttons, but the specs say it'll work for phone calls, music control and volume adjustment. To make this cake's icing even richer, a Klipsch Control App will also allow for "customized functionality." They're priced at a cool Benjamin with no word on a ship date just yet, but you'll find some robot-clad closeups in the gallery below. Gallery: Klipsch Image S4A in-ear headphones

BeBook Club 'S' boosts speed, contrast, leaves off nothing for savings

The respectable, if not exactly mind-blowing, BeBook Club e-reader is getting an update and adding an "S." So, what exactly does the BeBook Club 'S' bring to the party? Well, one of them fancy Pearl e-ink screens for starters, but also storage (it now sports 1GB of internal flash) and speed (it's got a beefy new 800MHz CPU). The design remains the same, but we're hoping the price doesn't. At $179 the original BeBook Club was always a tough sell, and with the price of the Kindle and Nook tumbling fast the 'S' here better also stand for savings.

Responding to an overwhelming customer demand for its all-electric Leaf vehicles, the Japanese car maker is accelerating the line's rollout to Chicago residents, with the first models to be available this fall. The launch will be bolstered by a planned 280 EV charging stations, funded in part by a pledged $1 million from the state and an additional $1 million grant. iTunes kills off 99 cent TV show rentals

Apple has quietly killed off its 99 cent TV show rentals via iTunes, sticking with the more successful a-la carte purchasing option.

An SD-quality TV episode costs $2 to purchase while its HD counterpart costs $3.

Rentals were introduced last year alongside the second generation Apple TV set-top box.

Apple says:

iTunes customers have shown they overwhelmingly prefer buying TV shows. iTunes in the Cloud lets customers download and watch their past TV purchases from their iOS devices, Apple TV, Mac or PC allowing them to enjoy their programming whenever and however they choose.

Although they would not mention the services by name, it is clear that Hulu and Netflix were the reason for the lack of rentals. Hulu offers episodes, for free, the day after they air and Netflix has full series of TV episodes, with no ads, for just $7.99 per month.Permalink | Comments

In August 2010, Google confirmed that they acquired Slide, the social networking gaming site created in 2005 by Max Levchin, the co-founder of PayPal.

The company's two most popular apps were SuperPoke and SPP Ranch. The first allowed you to adopt a virtual pet, and exchange money for virtual goods. Google purchased the company for around $200 million.

If you've played Need For Speed on the BlackBerry PlayBook, then the BlackBerry Bold version is just what you'd expect from EA. No official word on pricing or availability at this time, though a non-functioning link within the demo indicated the cost will be $4.99. Your device may have come pre-loaded with a download link for this game, but if not you can grab it at the link below.

Patent bill doesn?t provide meaningful alternatives to litigation

It’s not hard to see that the patent system in the US needs a major overhaul. Patents have been issued that are so obvious and wide reaching that it seems anything made today violates one patent or another. The Senate is set to start working on a bill in early September to reform the patent [...]

Best apps for tracking Hurricane Irene

If you're in the path of Hurricane Irene and you haven't gone through the App Store already looking for the best sources of info on the storm, there are others who have done it for you. Information Week, Appolicious, and MSNBC's Technolog have all made lists of apps for various flavors of smartphones.

Virtually all the lists of apps include the free Weather Channel App for iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7, and Blackberry*. The application description doesn't clearly state if the free app (there's a paid version) has push notification for weather alerts, but the $3.99 Weather Channel Max app does include them.

Aside from TWC's contributions, there's also the paid Hurricane for iPhone or Hurricane HD for iPad which shows up in multiple lists of suggested apps. You may want to try searching for an app for a TV station in your area; a lot of them have notifications for breaking news or weather alerts which you can set up.

CNN has a few apps listed alongside Twitter feeds to watch and things like a multipurpose radio which includes weather band information, a flashlight, a USB port for charging, and a hand crank to make the whole thing go.

Google has set up a crisis response map with a wide variety of layers including power outages, shelters, forecasts and loads more.

Here are some basic tips for maximizing battery life on your smartphone/tablet/laptop/e-reader in case of power outages: Turn the screen brightness down as low as you can, turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and if you can run multiple apps at once, quit anything extraneous. That way you'll get the most out of your battery before you have to hook it to that Axis radio and work the hand crank till your arm gives out.

If you do need this list of apps because you're in Irene's path, all of us at TUAW (who aren't battening down our own hatches) are thinking of you and wishing you well.

Apple stops renting TV shows in iTunes, could be working on a new kind of video service

Apple has pulled the plug on TV episode rentals via iTunes, abruptly leaving customers with only the option of purchasing per episode -- good thing you can watch those on your Apple TV streamed from the cloud -- or a Season Pass where available. AllThingsD has a quote from spokesman Tom Neumayr indicating this was in response to customers that "overwhelmingly prefer buying TV shows." Making the timing of the move particularly curious are once-again renewed rumors of an Apple HDTV and a WSJ profile of new CEO Tim Cook that indicates the company is "working on new technology to deliver video to televisions, and has been discussing whether to try to launch a subscription TV service." Like Google, any move depends on its success in negotiating a new delivery model from the networks, who so far have been averse to anything that threatens their existing relationship with pay-TV providers. It appears 99-cent rentals didn't move the needle, so we'll wait and see what the folks from Cupertino have up their sleeve next.

According to the Telegraph and the Daily Mail, Google is aiming to deliver its set-top software to the UK sometime in the next six months. Eric Schmidt is expected to announce the plans at the Edinburgh Television Festival (which starts today), likely including integration of BBC's iPlayer and ITV's Player. German court upholds injunction against Samsung tablets

Samsung just got some more bad news. A German court has upheld an earlier preliminary injunction on the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Now Germany joins most of the rest of the EU on the list of countries that ban Samsung from selling its tablet. The injunction came as a result of Apple's legal moves to stop sales of the device, citing its similarities with the iPad.

This isn't the worst news of the month for Samsung, however. Last week a Dutch court ordered EU-wide preliminary injunctions against all Samsung Galaxy smartphones. That ban goes into effect on October 13, 2011 and will arguably hurt much more than the Galaxy Tab ban. After all, smartphones are a much larger piece of Samsung's revenue than the Tab.

A final ruling on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 injunction will happen on September 9th.German court upholds injunction against Samsung tablets originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Thu, 25 Aug 2011 17:00:00 EST. Pandora's losses highlight DMCA's effect on Internet radio

Pandora, the popular Internet radio service, continues to grow at an amazing pace, so why is it they can't seem to turn a profit?

The answer lies in a fateful ruling from the Copyright Royalty Board. The CRB's existence is the result of a DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) provision mandating arbitration to determine fair Internet radio royalties in the event rights holders and webcasters couldn't reach their own agreement.

In theory this guaranteed that Internet radio providers would be on equal footing with the much larger music labels in royalgy negotiations. In practice it didn't work out that way.

In 2006 SoundExchange, a royalty collection agency created by the RIAA, entered into arbitration with a variety of webcasters entered into arbitration. The Copyright Royalty Board was created, under a 2004 law, to act as arbitrators, fulfilling the DMCA mandate.

The key point to understand is exactly what that mandate is:

In establishing rates and terms for transmissions by eligible nonsubscription services and new subscription services, the copyright arbitration royalty panel shall establish rates and terms that most clearly represent the rates and terms that would have been negotiated in the marketplace between a willing buyer and a willing seller

The problem with this wording lies in the definition of "a willing buyer and a willing seller." According to CRB judges, that means both sides must be assumed to have equal market power.

Obviously we know that assumption to be false. Even a relatively large operation like Pandora wouldn't be able to survive the loss of major label content for long, while the labels themselves would be relatively unaffected in the short term by the loss of Pandora's business.

The long term effects for the labels would certainly be dramatic, but that doesn't negate their current market power.

Thanks to the resulting CRB decision, setting royalty rates so high no webcaster could possibly afford them, the labels' superior negotiating position is even greater now than before.

Most webcasters including, eventually, Pandora were forced to negotiate lower rates with SoundExchange. Of course, by that time SoundExchange was holding all the cards.

The only alternative to whatever SoundExchange offered was the higher rates mandated by the CRB ruling. It was a choice between a long drawn out death or immediate execution.

Late last year the CRB set new webcaster royalty rates which more or less conform to the same standard as their 2007 ruling. This time around they didn't need to consider a hypothetical market, as they did the first time around.

Instead, they ruled primarily based on the rates webcasters were forced to accept following the original CRB decision.

Of course Pandora, and all the webcasters who struck long term deals with SoundExchange previously, are stuck with those royalty arrangements regardless. CRB rulings only apply to webcasters who haven't reached an agreement with SoundExchange.

Pandora had it's IPO earlier this year. Initially the stock seemed to be in trouble due to concerns about profitability

Despite reporting nothing but losses since going public, optimistic statements about the future have resulted in the stock price actually increasing.

But eventually they will have to turn a profit. It remains to be seen whether that will ever be possible without drastic reform to the royalty calculation process.

Given their current influence in Washington, as evidenced by the recent actions of Immigrations & Customs Enforcement and ongoing legislative efforts on their behalf, don't expect that to happen any time soon.Permalink | Comments

Traktor Kontrol S2 digital DJ system shaves a few inches and bones off its big brother

Look, last year's Traktor Kontrol S4 was pretty damn awesome but, at $1,000 and about the size of your average Williamsburg DJ, it wasn't exactly for everyone. That's where the S2 comes in. Instead of four channels, it's a "2+1" setup that supplements the two standard audio ones with a dedicated sample channel. You still get the same high-resolution jog wheels and integrated 24bit / 96kHz sound card, but Native Instruments managed to shave a few inches, pounds and bucks off its predecessor. At $669 it's much more affordable -- still not exactly an impulse purchase, but within the range of most serious hobbyists. Check out the gallery bellow as well as the video and the PR after the break.

Personal subtitle glasses from Sony may get trial run in UK next year

It's been quite a while since we've heard any news about those spiffy specs that put private subtitles in your field of view. It looks like they're finally inching closer to reality though, with some help from Sony's UK arm. The BBC recently took hard-of-hearing Brit Charlie Swinbourne to the theater and let him give the glasses a go. Rather than displaying subtitles on screen the eye-wear projects text on the lenses where only that particular user can see them. Going to see a French film in an American cinema, but your first language is Spanish? One day you could pick your language, in addition to keeping the captions out of other movie goers way. Wal-mart cuts price of 4GB Xbox 360 Kinect bundle

Joystiq posted a picture earlier in which Wal-Mart had discounted the price of the 4GB Xbox 360 Kinect bundle.

The picture led to speculation that Microsoft would do an across-the-board price cut on their consoles following Sony's recent price cut on the PlayStation 3.

For the week beginning August 28th, Wal-Mart is slashing the price $50 to $249, in-line with the PS3 (non-bundled).

Microsoft has responded to the price cut, saying:

Walmart made an independent decision to implement this temporary price cut. We've made no announcements about price drops, and do not discuss our pricing plans in advance. Xbox is the number-one selling console in the U.S. for 13 of the past 14 months, and is showing record growth. With an incredible line-up of games and entertainment, we're expecting the biggest year in Xbox history as the best-selling console worldwide.Permalink | Comments

Ubisoft removes always-on DRM from 'From Dust'

Ubisoft's highly anticipated "From Dust" has been met with massive criticism since launch.

The game, like all new Ubisoft titles, comes with the draconian "always-on" Internet connection DRM.

If you ever have a connection hiccup, or just plain lose service, you are returned to the main menu. With the DRM, you cannot play games offline, even in "single player" modes. This has happened multiple times where an Ubisoft authorization server has gone down, leaving legitimate players standing idle while those with pirated copies play happily.

Additionally, From Dust is currently missing graphics options, is extremely buggy, and is capped at 30fps, no matter what GPU you are running.

As of writing, Ubisoft has listened to the significant outcry about the game and will be sending out a patch in the next two weeks to remove the always-on DRM. Furthermore, they are offering a full refund to Steam users who purchased the game and "are dissatisfied."Permalink | Comments

Panasonic Lumix FX90 point-and-shoot packs built-in WiFi, Android / iPhone app compatibility

For many photographers, in-camera WiFi may be an attractive feature before you leave the store, but confusing setup and limited functionality reduce its appeal once you actually go and try to use it. Panasonic sets out to better take advantage of wireless connectivity with its Lumix FX90, adding Android and iPhone app support for transferring pictures and video directly to a mobile device, then uploading them to Lumix Club -- a cloud-based photo-sharing service -- and on to Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc. You can also share photos directly from the camera -- a dedicated WiFi button launches a menu prompting you to select a sharing service -- but app support brings the added benefit of your phone's data connection. Beyond those new wireless features, the FX90 includes a 12 megapixel CCD sensor, 5x, 24-120mm optical zoom lens, 3-inch touchscreen, and 1080i AVCHD video capture. QNX-based BlackBerrys will run Android apps

According to BusinessWeek, Android apps are headed to BlackBerrys, soon.

QNX-based Blackberrys, set for launch in early 2012, will have the ability to run Android apps, allegedly almost as well as they would run on Android devices.

The brand new BlackBerry 7 phones will not be upgrade-able to QNX, and therefore will not have access to Android apps.

Although the RIM PlayBook runs on QNX, it has not yet been given the "Android Player" necessary to run the apps. That technology will come built-in to the new phones.

The Android Market has 250,000 apps while the BlackBerry App World has around 45,000.Permalink | Comments

Chuckle Chuckle: Samsung claims Stanley Kubrick invented the iPad in '2001: A Space Odyssey'

Samsung lawyers just have too much time on their hands. Florian Mueller over at FOSS Patents notes that late last night Samsung filed a brief in opposition to an Apple suit against the company claiming that the iPad is not original. In fact, the brief claims that there is 'prior art' in the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The filing notes that in a scene in the movie, the two astronauts are shown eating and watching the news on a device that looks like an iPad. You can watch a clip from the film here.

"As with the design claimed by the [Apple patent], the tablet disclosed in the clip has an overall rectangular shape with a dominant display screen, narrow borders, a predominately flat front surface, a flat back surface (which is evident because the tablets are lying flat on the table's surface), and a thin form factor," Samsung said.

Actually, Steve Sande pointed out the tablet device here at TUAW last January (Samsung, expect our bill shortly). The difference is that Steve knew Kubrick's version was fictional, and not a real invention.

If successful, Samsung could invalidate the Apple patent that is irritating the company and driving them to tactics like this. I'm not holding my breath that a court will rule for Samsung. Perhaps they should consult with the HAL 9000 computer before going too much farther down this road, or did Apple copy HAL, too?

Sony boosted the NEX-5's sensor from 14 to 16 megapixels in the N, also adding 1080 / 60p AVCHD video capture, a 10 fps continuous shooting mode, a touch-enabled 3-inch LCD, and a maximum sensitivity of ISO 25,600. The mid-range NEX cam also supports an optional XGA OLED electronic viewfinder, which attaches to its accessory port and carries a price tag of $350. We should note that although the accessory port appears to be similar to that used on the NEX-C3 and previous gen NEX-5, the OLED attachment is only compatible with the 5N. Want to know more? Nokia 600 Targets Those Who Like to Share Music

Nokia today announced the 600, one of three new Symbian Belle smartphones. The 600's most prominent feature is its speakerphone, which Nokia says is the loudest it has ever produced. It also features an FM transmitter and FM receiver with built-in antenna, so users can listen to the radio through the loudspeaker without the need to plug in headphones (which normally serve as the antenna). Other features of the Nokia 600 are similar to the 700, and include penta-band HSDPA/HSUPA 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth 3.0, radios. The display measures 3.2-inches with 640 x 360 pixels, and it runs on a 1GHz processor. The Nokia 600 also boasts a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and 720p HD video capture; support for near-field communications and NFC-based accessories; and includes 2GB of on-board storage with support for microSD cards up to 32GB. Nokia expects the 600 to ship in the third quarter for about $260 before subsidies.

Samsung defends against Apple iPad lawsuit by claiming 2001: A Space Odyssey as prior art

No, you didn’t read the headline wrong — Samsung is claiming their Galaxy Tab 10.1 couldn’t be a copy of Apple’s iPad because… it was copying the earlier movie prop from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Well, okay, not copying — more like maintaining the design elements... More →

NYC restaurant completely reliant on iPad

When you go to De Santos, a high-end Italian restaurant in New York City's West Village, don't expect to be handed a regular menu. Instead, your waiter will bring you an iPad 2 on which you can select your meal. Inc.com reported on this innovative restaurant that is using iPad 2s, a custom app, and the Square card reader to reduce costs and increase customer satisfaction.

As of August 1st, De Santos -- located in a building that was once home to such music and literary geniuses as Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, and Edward Albee -- became the first restaurant in the Big Apple to be run completely on iPads. Not only can you order your food and drink on the iPad, but at the end of the meal you'll swipe your credit card on the device to settle your tab (De Santos uses Square to accept your charges).

You might think that US$500 menus are ridiculously expensive, but the owners say that the system will save money by streamlining food ordering. The iPads send orders directly to the kitchen over Wi-Fi, and customers can see the full "specs" of every dish on the menu. The system uses a custom point of sale system created for the 8 iPads in the restaurant, and the development and installation costs were about $18,000. That compares very favorably to traditional restaurant point of sale systems that normally cost a minimum of about $30,000 to install.

Since every transaction is entered into the system in real time, the owners of De Santos can monitor the restaurant remotely from an iPhone to view data about how sales are going. They can see how many orders are placed for what items, how many credit cards are used, and more. Co-owner Sebastian Gonella says that "You really have control over what happens in the dining room," which reduces costs for the restaurant.

The key feature might be the iPads themselves. Sebastian Gonella noted that "The customers love it. Who doesn't like an iPad? They go nuts." Once word gets out about how well the iPad-based system is working, we're sure to see more restaurants adopt the devices.NYC restaurant completely reliant on iPad originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Tue, 23 Aug 2011 11:30:00 EST. AT&T may discontinue slow-selling HTC Status Facebook phone [updated]

AT&T is reportedly considering pulling the HTC Status Facebook phone from its smartphone lineup due to slower than expected sales. The rumor comes by way of TechCrunch, which reports that it has confirmed the Status’ lackluster sales with multiple sources. AT&T is said to be preparing to discontinue the phone after just over a month on the market. AT&T’s HTC Status is an Android-powered QWERTY smartphone with a dedicated Facebook button that simplifies the process of sharing content on the world’s most popular social network. With the wide availability of native Facebook applications on iOS, Android and other popular platforms, however, consumers are seemingly content with other options and aren’t willing to sacrifice screen size for a Facebook button. Galaxy S II shows Android-stye buttons replacing iPhone-style home button

Samsung has posted an updated video showing the American version of the Galaxy S II. It's notable that Samsung has removed the iPhone-like home button and replaced it with more Android-style controls. In the video you'll see the current version of the phone, and the new button arrangement at the very end.

Apple has loudly (and legally) complained about competing phones that have copied the look and feel of the iPhone design, and it looks like Samsung is responding by removing elements that are clearly derivative.

The U.S. version of the phone is likely to appear on August 29th.

AT&T's fall and winter 2011 roadmap leaked in spreadsheet glory

Summer is in full swing, but if you happen to take a peek at AT&T's leaked roadmap for the upcoming two quarters, you might just sense the chill of winter in the air. While this doesn't appear to be official from Ma Bell, or entirely exhaustive, we've gotten a spreadsheet that goes in-depth to out the carrier's upcoming smartphones. A host of Android devices are on the list -- all with Gingerbread -- along with two handsets that strut Windows Phone 7.5 and another duo with BlackBerry 7. Of particular note, we see the Samsung SGH-i777 (otherwise known as the Attain), along with the SGH-i927 for you QWERTY slider lovers. Both Sammy's sport Category 14 HSDPA, or (up to) 21Mbps downloads. Curiously, the Impulse -- Ma Bell's rumored LTE phone -- is nowhere to be found. The Motorola MB865, with a full gigabyte of RAM and 8 megapixel camera, aligns very well with the rumored Atrix refresh. You've seen the two phones from RIM before, and while Samsung's Mango handset spent a brief moment in the wild, little is known about HTC's counterpart. Hopefully we won't need to wait for the actual change of seasons to learn more.AT&T's fall and winter 2011 roadmap leaked in spreadsheet glory originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 03:53:00 EDT. Sprint brings short-term data passes to HTC EVO View 4G, the contract-averse silently applaud

Because tablets were made to consume data, Sprint's launching an alternative pay model for those hesitant to enter into long-term contracts. Available now from the Hesse-led carrier, HTC EVO View 4G owners can select a per day, week, or even month data pass according to their wireless appetite. If you're amongst the shackled hordes currently subscribing to a monthly package, you're gonna have to sit this one out. For the commitment-phobic, however, there's a $14.99 day plan that nets users 150MB of 3G / 4G use, a $29.99 week plan that ups the ante to 500MB, and the top end $49.99 month pass that serves up 1.5GB of wireless radio soup. In the event you haven't been sufficiently seduced, the third place network's even thrown in a "free day" promo pass to get you hooked started on that "third device." Be sure to head to the source for the full à la carte breakdown.Sprint brings short-term data passes to HTC EVO View 4G, the contract-averse silently applaud originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 23 Aug 2011 17:41:00 EDT.
