iWork for iPhone hands-on

Apple announced that their popular iWork suite of apps are now compatible on iPhone and iPod touch devices a little earlier today, and you know we had to get up close and personal with them. For starters, the apps are full versions of the existing app that ran on the iPad, and even from browsing through the included sample guides in their respective apps and spending a few minutes creating new ones, it’s clear that there’s a level of capability here that just isn’t seen on mobile devices, let alone smartphones. The transition effects in Keynote are nothing short of amazing, and then when you actually take a second to realize this is happening on your mobile phone ? it’s

Apple is eyeing Charlotte for its next retail store in North Carolina. Building permits and a job listing suggest the new store will move into space #280 in Charlotte's Northlake Mall. TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Touchgrind BMX

Illusion Labs' Touchgrind was one of the first iPhone games I ever saw in action. Honestly, it wasn't very successful as a full game, but using the iPhone's multi-touch screen to control a fingerboard was fun. Now, Illusion Labs is bringing the brand back with Touchgrind BMX, a game that changes your mode of transportation to BMX bikes, and opens up the view a bit.

One of the big issues with Touchgrind was that, because the camera was top down, you had a hard time seeing exactly where you were going. Illusion has fixed this in Touchgrind BMX by moving to a more from-behind view, and setting the bike along a path rather than letting you freely explore. But you still control the bike with two fingers, flipping the handlebars around with one, and spinning the bike's body with the other. It still takes quite a bit of getting used to, but it's much friendlier than the original Touchgrind interface.

There are plenty of extras to find and explore, including goals and scoring medals and challenges, along with a nice replay mode that even lets you send videos off to YouTube and Facebook. There's no Game Center integration, strangely, which would have been nice for leaderboards and achievements. But if you're interested, the app is now available for US$4.99 on the iPhone.TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Touchgrind BMX originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 27 May 2011 08:00:00 EST. iOS 5 to feature 'completely revamped' notifications, widgets

TechCrunch reports that iOS 5, expected to debut at WWDC next month, will feature a "completely revamped" notification system and widgets. Apple has long been rumored to be revamping its notifications system in iOS, and many have expected that such a notification system revamp would make its way into iOS 5.

The widgets functionality is somewhat a new concept, however. Besides TechCrunch's mention that there will be iOS widgets, nothing else is known about what they'll look like or what function they'll perform. MacRumors postulates that iOS widgets could "presumably provide quick access to information without the need for launching dedicated apps, much the same as Dashboard widgets in Mac OS X." They might also function similarly to a pretty cool concept video of how widgets might work in iOS.iOS 5 to feature 'completely revamped' notifications, widgets originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 27 May 2011 22:30:00 EST. Stats of the Union brings American demographic data to the iPad

If you have an interest in American demographics and statistics, you need to check out the Stats of the Union iPad app. Statistics are only useful when you have a clear way of organizing and viewing the data. Without being able to do that, you can't glean any useful information from the numbers. What Stats of the Union does is take a host of data from the Community Health Status Indicators (CHSI) report and present it on an interactive, color-coded map.

Stats of the Union allows you to visualize any number of statistics for the entire country, all the way down to the county level. There are multiple subcategories in the seven prime categories including Summary, Demographics, Births, Deaths, At-Risk Groups, Diseases, and Risk Factors. For example, with a few taps I can see that in the county where I grew up (St. Louis County), life expectancy is 77.4 years, and population is 991,830. 20 percent of those people are at risk of health issues from smoking, and 102,548 people under the age of 65 (over 10 percent of the population) lack health insurance.

Those stats are only a small fraction of the information I can examine in the app. Stats of the Union is one of those apps that shows just how powerful of a learning tool the iPad can be. For those of you wondering, the app isn't political; it just presents a lot of complex data in an easy-to-view form and asks users to make their own conclusions about America's health. Stats of the Union is a free download.

A quick look at the new BlackBerry Protect options coming with BlackBerry 7

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

As you may or may not have noticed from some of the leaked device videos of recent, BlackBerry Protect is getting an upgrade in BlackBerry 7, all while becoming deeply integrated into the BlackBerry OS. The above video shows us some of the new options that will be available when the new version rolls out.

That's not to say anyone who isn't on BlackBerry 7 won't get the new features. Essentially, RIM could roll this out to every compatible BlackBerry device tomorrow if they wanted as an update to the already existing standalone BlackBerry Protect application but having it built-in on newer devices just makes sense. Thanks, @rr_yy!

TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Air Penguin

Air Penguin from GAMEVIL is one of those deceptively simple, casual pick-up-and-play games for US$0.99 on the App Store. What I look for in these types of games are polish and a great control scheme. Luckily, Air Penguin has both. Your goal is to jump and slide your way through levels until your penguin safely arrives at the end of the series of obstacles and challenges in your way. Usually this means having your penguin jump or slide around obstacles, or ride various sea critters around obstacles. You pick up what look like Goldfish crackers for scoring, although the primary goal is to simply complete a level without falling in the water. Apparently your penguin cannot swim very well.

The controls are based on tilt only and cannot be changed. The good news is that the controls are responsive without being too twitchy. It is possible to adjust the sensitivity, and before you begin a level, there's a countdown that allows you to level your iPhone (resetting the tilt). You can change the penguin's direction in the air, which is useful because certain levels require you to juke around obstacles while in midair -- tricky but not impossible. Sometimes you're able to flick the iPhone up at the end of a run and go flying through the air (the dream of many penguins). When you're not airborne, you might be sliding across the snow, controlling the velocity and direction with tilt. You may also ride an animal, again controlling speed and direction with tilt.

Air Penguin is simplicity itself, and its speedy gameplay, polished graphics and sound and adequate controls make it a pleasant diversion for kids and adults. I have no idea what the extra fish you can buy via in-app purchases are used for, but you get 50 free fish for fun. You won't need much beyond the $0.99 price to have a quick, enjoyable game. Check out Air Penguin for cute, casual fun.TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Air Penguin originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 30 May 2011 08:00:00 EST. Apple invites Australian journalists to WWDC keynote

More evidence points to something big happening at WWDC 2011, as Apple has reportedly invited Australian journalists to the June 6 keynote.

iTechReport.com.au referenced a tweet from Australian technology editor Charlie Brown which mentioned his invitation to the WWDC keynote. Brown wrote:

"I think something big will be announced on June 6th in San Fran by #Apple. I have just been invited to attend the event."

Interestingly, that tweet has since been deleted. Earlier this week, Apple reportedly extended invitations to UK journalists as well.

Remember that this is a developer's conference, not a consumer trade show, so don't get your heart set on goodies. However, a little birdie has told us that Mac OS X Lion has begun internal testing at Apple, and could possibly be ready for WWDC.

Asus Announces Padfone, a Smartphone-Tablet Combo

Asus today announced a new product that blends the functionality of both an Android smartphone with an Android tablet. The Padfone features an Android smartphone that docks inside a slate-style tablet device. The tablet device offers a bigger screen, stereo speakers, and an extended battery, but the operating system and core features are provided by the smartphone. Asus says the operating system can transition seamlessly between the phone and tablet when the phone is inserted. Asus points out that this will allow users to "eliminate data transfer" as all the data and media are kept on the smartphone and don't need to be installed/replicated on the tablet. It also supports the smartphones cellular capabilities without the need for a second SIM card/data subscription, and the pad can be used to charge the phone's battery when needed. Asus shared few other details, but indicated that it is targeting a holiday launch for the product. (follow link to read)

TUAW's Daily Mac App: The Unarchiver

The Unarchiver isn't a new utility to the Mac world, and we reviewed an earlier version of it. It's the Swiss Army knife of unarchiving programs and can handle pretty much any file, no matter how ancient, you throw at it. The native unarchiver for OS X is pretty solid in and of itself, but it's nice to have a utility such as Unarchiver around when you need something to tackle anything from Amiga PowerPacker files to StuffIt Archive files.

There are a number of unarchiving options, including when you want to create folders for the extracted files or alter the modification date, and the ability to move the original archive file to the trash after expanding the contents. The one thing you can't do is archive stuff. If you want to do that, you can use OS X's built-in archiver, buy the venerable StuffIt Deluxe ($49.99) or spring for the US$19.99 BetterZip.

However, Unarchiver is a free download in the Mac App Store, so it's definitely worth having as one of your basic Mac utilities.TUAW's Daily Mac App: The Unarchiver originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 27 May 2011 15:00:00 EST. Popular gaming emulators get pulled from Android Market

It appears this weekend that Google has pulled a number of popular gaming emulators from the Android Market.

All were created by developer Yongzh and include Nesoid, Snesoid, Gensoid, N64oid, and Gameboid.

The developer says his account was removed without any prior warnings and he is now looking to move his emulators to the third-party "SlideME" app store.

Just last month, Google pulled the PSX emulator, PSX4droid from the Market, as well.

While emulators are legal, as standalone apps, 9 times out of 10, the ROMS (games) used by gamers are obtained illegally thus making the whole legal standing of the software sketchy.Permalink | Comments

Android makes Microsoft more money than Windows Phone

According to a report by Citi analyst WalterPritchard, Microsoft may be making more money offGoogle’s Android operating system than it makes off its own Windows Phone platform ? five times more, in fact. Pritchard states that as a result of a patent settlement, HTC is required to pay Microsoft $5 for every Android phone sold. Analyst Horace Dediu estimates that HTC has sold 30 million Android smartphones to date, which adds up to $150 million in the bank for Microsoft. Dediu notes that Microsoft has reported Windows Phone sales totaling 2 million licenses to date, and he estimates the company’s license fee to be $15 for a total of just $30 million.Pritchart notes that Microsoft is currently suing other Android

Introducing 'Wallet' by Google for NFC devices

Google has introduced their "Wallet" automatic mobile phone payment system today, turning NFC-enabled devices into credit cards.

Users with Android devices will be able to pay for groceries or other items by waving their phones in front of NFC readers.

Google, alongside launching their daily deal site Google Offers, says it envisions Android devices eventually being a "personal financial hub" for coupons, loyalty points, payments, receipts and more.

As a way to not scare the credit card firms, Google will not take any share of the fees generated from Wallet payments, instead relying on added revenue from traffic, ads and Google Offers.

Wallet will launch over the summer, with trials starting sooner in NYC and San Francisco. A few of the retailers that will soon accept mobile payments are Macys, Subway, Walgreens, Toys R Us, Bloomingdales and Guess.

As with physical credit cards, users have zero liability if there are fraudulent purchases and users need a PIN number to access the app, meaning the chip can't be accessed by hackers.Permalink | Comments

Official The Witcher 2 update strips all DRM

Developer CD Projekt has announced today that the official 1.1 update for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings will strip all DRM that came with the game originally.

Additionally, the patch allows gamers to install and play the game on any amount of computers they want, whereas before it was restricted to 3 machines.

Says the developer:

Our goal is to make our fans and customers happy and to reward them for buying our game and DRM schemes does not support our philosophy as they might create obstacles for users of legally bought copies.

Our approach to countering piracy is to incorporate superior value in the legal version. This means it has to be superior in every respect: less troublesome to use and install, with full support, and with access to additional content and services. So, we felt keeping the DRM would mainly hurt our legitimate users.

This is completely in line with what we said before the release of The Witcher 2. We felt DRM was necessary to prevent the game being pirated and leaked before release. This purpose has been served, so we are pleased to let our users enjoy the full freedom of game usage they deserve.

Outside of the removal of the DRM, the update will also bring a free DLC quest, frame rate increases and greater stability.Permalink | Comments

Microsoft only makes $1.25 billion in China per year

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has said today that profits for the company coming from China is only $1.25 billion per year, about 1/50th of the software giant's overall revenue of $62 billion.

The CEO says that number could jump to $7.5 billion if China had better piracy control.

Speaking to Chinese employees today, Ballmer said "our revenue in China will be about a twentieth of our revenue in the United States," even though the company sells the same amount of PCs in both countries.

Additionally, the CEO says the company makes six times as much per PC sold in India as it does in China, ever since India initiated stricter piracy controls in the country.Permalink | Comments

Apple education deal rumored for WWDC

BGR broke out a rumor today suggesting Apple may unveil a new Back-To-School promotion at WWDC. As part of this sale, everyone who buys a new Mac with their educational discount would receive a free iPod touch or $200 off the cost of an iPad.

For the past several years, Apple has kicked off a back-to-school promotion in late May or early June. It would not be surprising to see this discount extended to the iPad this year.

The WWDC part of this rumor, though, has us scratching our heads. In previous years, these promotions were announced on Apple's website. There was no event, not even a press release. Yes, they occurred around the time of WWDC, but they were not announced at WWDC. Why would this year be any different?

Senator Al Franken asks iOS developers to provide "clear and understandable privacy policies"

Following up on requests he made to Apple and Google in his hearing on mobile privacy earlier this month, US Senator Al Franken wrote a letter to the companies' respective CEOs asking them to require all software sold through the App Store and Android App Market to provide consumers with "clear and understandable privacy policies."

Franken conceded that most customers never read the legal notices packaged with apps or think to look for a privacy statement for each (or any) app they install. He added that privacy notices alone wouldn't address all of the senator's privacy concerns.

Even so, he observed that Apple and Google are market leaders capable of taking this "simple first step towards protecting [their] users' privacy." Requiring each app to transparently disclose what information it collects, how the data is used and who it is shared with would help attentive consumers, privacy advocates and federal authorities better understand how mobile software accesses and uses personal information.

The senator concluded by urging Apple and Google to, at a minimum, make privacy policies a strict requirement for all location aware applications, implying it would be more feasible to address his privacy concerns within a subset of all software offered through Apple and Google's app catalogs. After all, Franken's hearings followed a highly publicized bug in iOS that caused location data to be stored in an unencrypted file on the device. Apple fixed the bug in a recent software update.

Finally, Franken reminded Apple and Google of their commitments to protecting the privacy of their customers. "Apple and Google have each said time and again that they are committed to protecting users' privacy," Franken wrote. "This is an easy opportunity for your companies to put that commitment into action."

Tactile Brush uses sensory illusions to let you feel games, movies

Poor arachnophobes -- it's bad enough that 3D movies can make it look like swarms of eight-legged freaks are pouring out of the screen, now Disney wants you to feel the creepy crawlies, too. In a presumed effort to one-up those "4D" chairs used at Shrek's castle down in Orlando, the company has been working on what it calls Tactile Brush -- a chair with an array of 12 vibrating coils that are able to simulate anything from the sensation of speeding around a race track to the delicate drip of rain on your back. Two techniques are used: apparent motion, which triggers two motors in quick succession to create the illusion of something moving over your skin, and phantom sensation, in which two stationary vibrations are felt as a single tingle between the two points. Disney researchers demoed Tactile Brush at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in Vancouver using a racing game, but hope to bring it to amusement park rides and movie theaters -- which, in the right hands, should lead to more screaming and at least a few pairs of wet pants.Tactile Brush uses sensory illusions to let you feel games, movies originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 28 May 2011 13:01:00 EDT. South Africa honors BlackBerry as the 'Coolest Brand Overall'

In Sunday Times' Generation Next 2011 Brand Survey Awards, BlackBerry was hailed as the Coolest Brand Overall, with top honors in the Coolest High-Tech Gadget and Coolest Cellphone categories. The outcomes of the 7th yearly Generation Next Brand Survey Awards had been declared in Johannesburg on Wednesday, and one of the prime reasons for declaring BlackBerry the Coolest Brand Overall was BBM just as I thought earlier. BBM was, in fact, awarded with 'Best Cellphone Application'. Craige Fleischer, Regional Director Southern Africa at RIM, shares his excitement pointing out that the active youth of today is what made everything possible:

"Generation Y?s choice of BlackBerry for the coolest brand overall reflects the importance the smartphone has assumed in the increasingly connected lives of a tech-savvy generation. The BlackBerry smartphone is a social tool and a lifestyle device that keeps them in touch with everything that matters to them."

As part of Generation Y myself, I can only say that I wholeheartedly agree. My BlackBerry smartphone is definitely a powerful social tool and it helps me keep up with my daily chores, something my BlackBerry does particularly well. But what are your thoughts on this? Is BlackBerry along with BBM the killer combo every teenager has dreamed of - or are there better options available? Voice your opinion in the comments!

Apple files trademark infringement against WhiteiPhone4Now website

Apple's legal team finally caught up with Fei Lam, the teenager from New York who was selling white iPhone 4 conversion kits, and filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against him.

Lam claimed to be getting white iPhone 4 parts directly from Foxconn and was reselling them on his website, whiteiphone4now.com, for US$279. He supposedly raked in over $130,000 from his endeavor until a "private investigator", thought to be hired by Apple, accused him of selling stolen goods.

The trademark lawsuit was filed and voluntarily dismissed in one motion suggesting Apple and Lam reached some type of settlement. Lam is likely out of business as the wording of the dismissal leaves the door open for Apple to refile the claim in the future.Apple files trademark infringement against WhiteiPhone4Now website originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 27 May 2011 11:00:00 EST. HTC DROID Incredible 2 review

The DROID Incredible 2 recently landed on Verizon Wireless, and it has some tough shoes to fill. When the original launched,it was BGR’s favorite Android phone to date despite stiff competition from the Motorola DROID, which launched at the same time. The DROID Incredible 2 packs some decent hardware, like a 1GHz processor, an 8-megapixel camera capable of recording 720p video, and more, but its specs ? and data speeds ? don’t match those of phones at the higher end of Verizon’s portfolio. Is the DROID Incredible 2 a worthy successor to the original or does it fall short? Read on to find out! William Gibson Discovered The iPhone In 1995

I was just rewatching the 1995 classic Johnny Mnemonic and, nestled amid the overwrought actors and odd storyline, I heard something that stuck out: mention of a Thomson Eyephone... or iPhone. If that doesn't mean that William Gibson isn't on the cutting edge of future-tech, I don't know who is and I find it charming that he once thought that Thomson would survive past the new millenium.

I also suggest that you grab the "I need a computer" audio for your ringtone. It's a gem.

Xperia Play finally lands at O2 UK, available in black or white

It took a while, but that O2-exclusive (for the UK) white Xperia Play is finally with us. Earlier this month, the UK carrier had promised to deliver the Play in June, but evidently things have gone better than expected, as we now see "in stock" signage next to both the black and white models of Sony Ericsson's gaming phone. Pricing is identical for both color variants, starting at "free" when attached to expensive (£34 per month) two-year contracts and peaking at £430 ($702) on pre-pay deals. O2 also throws in a matching multimedia dock plus three bonus games to sweeten the deal. We're guessing that Android 2.3.3 update that Sony Ericsson just rolled out for the Xperia Play might finally have allayed O2's software concerns, which has allowed it to now start selling the device in earnest.Xperia Play finally lands at O2 UK, available in black or white originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 27 May 2011 06:04:00 EDT. HTC to Unlock Bootloaders on Future Android Phones

HTC today announced via a post on its Facebook page that it will no longer lock the bootloaders on its Android devices. Unlocking the bootloaders will make it easier for customers to root their devices and install custom system software. Today, I'm confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience." Introducing 'Wallet' by Google for NFC devices

HTC's 10-inch 'Puccini' Honeycomb tablet still rumored for summer release

What would a morning be without a little injection of rumorjuice courtesy of DigiTimes? Today's tattle has HTC's 10.1-inch LTE "Puccini" tablet hitting mass production in June with AU Optronics and Wintek pegged as the touch panel suppliers. Other specs, like the 1.5GHz MSM8660 processor and Android 3.0.1 build, seem to have been culled from that 911sniper leak which DigiTimes graciously cites as "sources in the supply chain." Sprint teams up with Motorola for June 9 event, finally launching a Tegra 2 device?

Sprint and Motorola have a little special something up their sleeves, and are rolling them up to show off their latest "collaborations" at a press luncheon on June 9th. Since big bosses CEO Dan Hesse and Sanjay Jha will be in attendance, and the event will be held during Apple's WWDC, we have a feeling this is going to be something big. Whatever this project is, it's been kept under the radar very well -- until now. We're hearing buzz about a Tegra 2-powered device planned for a launch next month; different reports have come out over the last few days claiming Sprint will finally take a turn sporting a Tegra 2 Android -- the yin to the EVO 3D's yang, we suppose -- sometime next month.

The device may be called the Motorola Photon 4G, a name that first appeared in a WiFi certification form (seen after the break) a month ago. According to the rumors, Sprint was ready to launch its own version of the Atrix 4G back in March, but stalled the phone's release in order to make a few design changes. Some of these changes supposedly include a 4.3-inch display, Gingerbread pre-installed, and a look that closely resembles the EVO 4G (it would even come with a kickstand). The Photon 4G is a probability for the event, but note that the invite mentions "collaborations," implying there will be more than one product to showcase. This could mean a Xoom with WiMAX is just about ready for primetime -- or perhaps it's something else magical and unexpected. No matter what's hiding in Hesse's pocket on June 9th, we'll be there to tell you all about it.Continue reading Sprint teams up with Motorola for June 9 event, finally launching a Tegra 2 device?Sprint teams up with Motorola for June 9 event, finally launching a Tegra 2 device? originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 25 May 2011 15:31:00 EDT. China Unicom offers $10 monthly iPhone plan amid stiff competition

China Unicom is trying to grab additional customers before its exclusivity with the iPhone ends. The wireless carrier is kicking off a new promotion that drops the price on its lowest iPhone plan to a rock bottom 66 yuan (US$10) a month.

Right now, its larger rivals China Mobile and China Telecom do not sell the iPhone with a service contract, but may do so in the near future. Both carriers are rumored to be in talks with Apple to bring the iPhone to their respective networks.

There is little doubt that Apple would like to get the iPhone into the hands of as many people as possible, especially in China where over 900 million people use a mobile phone. Quarterly results also show iPhone sales are exploding in this Asian-Pacific region, and Apple surely wants to capitalize on its early success.China Unicom offers $10 monthly iPhone plan amid stiff competition originally appeared on TUAW on Wed, 25 May 2011 12:00:00 EST. Get ready for summer travel with a free National Park guide

It's almost summer, so thoughts turn to rock climbing, scenic vistas, maybe a geyser or a cool mountain lake. If you're thinking of traveling to any of the 58 US national parks, or any of the places in the National Park System that include seashores, battlefields, recreation areas and more, I think the new Chimani National Park app is for you. The free iPad and iPhone app gives you an overview of the place you want to visit, interactive maps and some Wikipedia-based information. It also provides a to-do list, letting you mark where you've been and where you'd like to go. The app also provides a web link to the official site for each National Park Service-administered location.

I've previously reviewed the Chimani National Park guides that deal with some specific locations. This latest app is a much less detailed guide, but I was surprised to learn of national park facilities in my area that I didn't even know were there. There is also an option to get a lifetime subscription to the National Parks Traveler News website for $1.99.

Xbox 360 to get full stereoscopic 3D support via system update

According to Eurogamer, Microsoft is set to announce full stereoscopic 3D features for the Xbox 360 games console very soon.

The report says that the support works exactly like the PlayStation 3's 3D effects, providing HDMI stereoscopic 3D in the 1280x1470 twin 720p framebuffer configuration, giving a 720p image per eye.

"They'd be mad not to do it, is all I can say," said Eurogamer's source, who is said to be close to continued Xbox 360 development. "The machine is not only very capable, it's more capable than the PlayStation 3 of doing stereo, assuming you don't have one of the old crappy ones with the composite leads... assuming you have a HDMI Xbox."

The source went on to hint that the announcement will be made at E3 this year. "Microsoft is going to have to go on stage to say something, aren't they?"

The PS3 officially got stereoscopic 3D functionality last June bia a firmware update, and is still the only console to offer it as a feature. Some titles for the Xbox 360 do tout the effect, but render using 3D techniques based on the principle of two distinct images crammed into one 720p framebuffer.

Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg commented last year that the Xbox 360 is fully capable of providing for stereoscopic 3D titles, but the question is whether consumers are interested in it.

The support is expected to be added to the Xbox 360 via a Dashboard update in the near future.Permalink | Comments

Hasselblad?s Newest Camera Gets 200 Megapixels From A 50-Megapixel Sensor

Hasselblad is known for high megapixel counts, but this is getting a bit ridiculous. On the other hand, the engineering solution they've employed to create that count is really interesting. Most camera makers, including Hasselblad, increase the pixel count of their sensor by reducing the size of the photosensitive wells and pushing them closer together. This has some benefits, but also drawbacks, one of which is a sort of pixel density wall that Hasselblad has probably been running up against for a while.

But instead of making the sensor bigger or packing more into it, they created a clever hardware-software combination that might give them a real advantage over the competition.

iPhone 4 to arrive in India on May 27

TUAW readers in India waiting for the iPhone 4 to show up only need to wait two more days. Indian mobile carrier Airtel has been taking pre-registrations for the iPhone 4 since earlier this month, but now competitor Aircel is going to hit the market first.

Aircel is launching the iPhone 4 on Friday for both pre-and-postpaid plans. The retail price isn't cheap -- you can expect to pay Rs 34,500 (about US$763) for the 16 GB iPhone 4 or a whopping Rs 40,900 (about $905) for the 32 GB model.

There's something that should make the sting of paying for the iPhone price up front a bit less painful. Aircel is using a reverse-subsidy program, and you can recover the full cost of the iPhone 4 in monthly credits over the next two years.

Details of the plans Aircel is offering are here.iPhone 4 to arrive in India on May 27 originally appeared on TUAW on Wed, 25 May 2011 11:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.Source | Permalink | Email this | Comments

We’ve been kicking back and playing (literally) with the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY for the past few days, and while we put our full review together, we figured we’d share some quick impressions of the handset that will make its way to Verizon Wireless tomorrow. For starters, Verizon’s Xperia PLAY runs stock Android 2.3 Gingerbread as opposed to the customized userinterfacethat the international version ships with. Trust us, that’s a good thing. In terms of feel, the Xperia PLAY feels good in the hand, though it’s BMI is probably creeping up into the overweight category as the the phone is a bit heavy and is much thicker than most other Android handsets on the market. Square Adds 'Loyalty Cards' to Your iPhone

Square today rolled out a new mobile payment service that will benefit both retailers and consumers. The retail portion includes a new iPad application that allows the tablet to act as an advanced cash register, negating the need for a normal transaction terminal. The piece for consumers is a new Card Case application for the iPhone. The Card Case application acts similar to loyalty cards and is meant for use in peoples' home neighborhoods. People must first make a purchase at a merchant that supports Square. The merchant will then pass a link to the consumer who can download the Card Case application. Users can then set up a "tab" at participating vendors -- i.e., an account associated with their name and Square account. This would let users to make payments by simply using their name, which is already associated with the Square account and credit card at the merchant's location. The application also provides access to a merchant directory, daily menus/specials are participating restaurants, and stores receipts electronically. Right now, only 50 merchants are supporting this new Card Case in Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., but Square hopes more will sign up over time. Square will offer an Android version of Card Case shortly. (follow link to read)

Windows Phone 7.1 is the likely name for Mango OS update

Microsoft's proper preview event for the next big release of Windows Phone may be mere hours away, but there's still time for a bit of good old fashioned web sleuthing before then. Latest on our radar is this Microsoft Developer Network page listing out all the APIs in Silverlight for Windows Phone 7.1. That's right, your eyes do not deceive you, there's a whole extra decimal added to the OS number, ostensibly signifying the move to the Mango update we're all so hungry for. We'd previously heard the moniker of Windows Phone 7.5 bandied about, but that was based on supposition more than anything else, and a .1 upgrade makes sense in light of the curent 7.0.7 version number. Fuller details will be forthcoming later on today, but for now, pencil in the number 7.1 alongside the dream specs of your next Windows Phone.

Microsoft Officially Announces Windows Phone 7.1 Mango With 500 New Features

Today at Microsoft?s Windows Phone VIP Reception, president of mobile communications Andy Lees and senior Windows Phone product manager Derek Snyder gave us a quick rundown of what to expect out of the newest version of the Windows Phone platform, WP7.1 or ?Mango.?

Though he didn?t have time to cover all 500 new features, the focus will certainly center around communication, applications, and the way we use mobile internet. Along with the current service offerings in People Hub such as Facebook, Hotmail, and Gmail, Microsoft has gone ahead and added LinkedIn and Twitter. Mango will also bring with it a Groups feature, allowing multiple people to communicate across a multiple platforms, while simultaneously integrating those people?s profiles, pictures, and a group history of all events and communication shared. Instead of only being able to communicate with groups that all share the same hardware maker, Mango employs Windows Live Messenger and Facebook Chat to keep you connected with friends, including those with other phones.

Yahoo Mail to see massive updates in coming weeks

Yahoo has said it will be rolling out a beta of its latest Yahoo Mail over the coming weeks, dubbing the service as the "best Yahoo Mail ever."

The update will hit Yahoo's 277 million free email users, and promises to be "faster, safer, easier to use, and offers a seamless experience across PC, mobile and tablet devices."

Furthermore, the company says it will offer unlimited storage. Rival Gmail offers 7.6GB, which is the most of the free offerings, currently.

Hotmail/Live has the biggest share of the market, at 327 million users, followed by Yahoo and Gmail at 220 million users. Gmail and Yahoo, however, have been chipping away at Hotmail for years now.

Says Blake Irving, Yahoo chief product officer:

Yahoo's vision for online communications brings together all the tools that people use to connect -- e-mail, chat, SMS, and social updates -- and makes it easier for them to share content and engage in conversations with the people that matter most to them. We're delivering on this strategy with the latest version of Yahoo Mail, providing our hundreds of millions of users worldwide with a fun, engaging and constantly connected experience across desktop, mobile and tablet devices that keeps the conversation going -- anytime, anywhere.

The updated Yahoo Mail will add social networking capabilities like responding to messages from Facebook and sharing updates via Twitter, Zynga and FB from within the service.

Just like Google's "Priority" box, yahoo will add message and contact prioritization.

Yahoo Mail will also add chat for Windows Live and Yahoo Messenger within the service, themes and stationary options, Yahoo apps, YouSendIt-integration, online order tracking, an Unsubscriber app, and new SpamGuard tech that should further decrease spam by up to 60 percent.Permalink | Comments

TUAW's Daily Mac App: BetterSnapTool

If there's one good thing that Windows 7 users have built-in that Mac users don't, it's window snapping. In Windows 7 you can drag a window to the top of the screen to maximize it, or to the left or right side of the screen to make it fill half the display.

BetterSnapTool is window snapping for OS X on steroids. Whether you want to snap and expand to full screen, half screen (either horizontally or vertically), one-third of a screen, quarter screen, centered or even centered or maximized on the next monitor, BetterSnapTool has a gesture or keyboard shortcut to do it.

Options include the ability to define your own keyboard shortcuts, all 17 of them, turn on or off the various screen edge snapping gestures, as well as a whole host of settings for the preview window. If you're a fan of manually resizing or moving windows, BetterSnapTool includes a system of window resizing and movement using a modifier key and the movement of your mouse -- you don't even have to click. You can even make the OS X window traffic lights do set things with right or middle clicks, or define a task to a title bar double-click.

As the name might suggest, there are other apps that do similar things to BetterSnapTool. Cinch, for instance, gives you some of the screen edge gestures, but none that I've tried have had such a comprehensive and easy to use list of snap options. Even the optional menu bar icon is rather attractive and looks like a mini Battenberg cake.

While there are other applications that do similar things, including the recently featured Flexiglass, BetterSnapTool is certainly one of the best and an absolute steal at US$1.99.TUAW's Daily Mac App: BetterSnapTool originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 23 May 2011 15:30:00 EST. Since the PlayBook doesn't really have any type of file manager, AIR Browser lets you dive in a bit and do some cleaning as needed. Everything the app offers works well thus far, but hopefully some additional features can be added in down the road to keep it on top. Patent shows concept for platform-independent word processor

Patently Apple has uncovered a new patent application from Apple that might give us a glimpse of part of Apple's future internet strategy. This approach looks beyond OS X and could bring apps like Pages to the PC and other platforms.

The patent talks about a new word processing platform that allows documents to be edited across all platforms. It also allows them to be formatted and shown exactly the same way on various devices. Similar to Google Docs and Microsoft's 365, the system would work within a web browser. While the patent is centered on a word processor application, it isn't limited to such documents and could be applied to any document presenting text on a screen.

Is this something you would use if Apple produced a device-independent word processor -- or even a suite of apps that you could use on any platform? Let us know in the comments.Patent shows concept for platform-independent word processor originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 23 May 2011 11:00:00 EST. Video: Obama?s Unstoppable Presidential Limo Met Its Match

Where ever Obama goes, so goes a fleet of vehicles including several identical armored limos. One of those recently breached itself on a parking ramp during the President's trip to Dublin proving that while it can withstand most every attack save a nuclear bomb, it's not unstoppable. Point of interest, this limo isn't the new super limo creatively named The Beast. Judging by the Cadillac's front fascia, it appears to be one from the Bush era. Click through for the fun video.

Apple vaults into top 5 PC maker spot in UK, Western Europe

Earlier this week, Gartner issued a press release about the Western European PC market. For most PC manufacturers, things aren't looking good. For the first quarter of 2011, PC sales in the region were down 18 percent year over year. However, as usual, Apple has bucked the trend. For the same period, Apple's Western European PC sales were up 10-15 percent in the same markets. That growth helped the Mac maker spring into the top five PC vendor list in both the UK and Western Europe.

"Apple made its debut among the top five vendors in Western Europe, displacing Toshiba in the first quarter of 2011. Apple was the only one among the top five vendors to increase shipments, with volumes for mobile PCs growing 32 percent in the first quarter of 2011," Gartner said.

The top five PC makers for Western Europe are now HP, Acer, Dell, Asus and Apple; in the UK, the top five are HP, Acer, Dell, Toshiba and Apple.Apple vaults into top 5 PC maker spot in UK, Western Europe originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 20 May 2011 07:00:00 EST. Sprint could add new business as a result of AT&T / T-Mobile deal, analyst believes

Sprint is openly opposed to AT&T’s proposed $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile, but the scrappy carrier stands to benefit from the deal according to Piper Jaffray analyst Christopher Larsen. Larsen on Friday lifted his rating on Sprint stock from neutral to overweight, while also upping his price target from $5 to $6.50. The analyst sees brighter days ahead for the carrier through the rest of 2011 and 2012 as well, and he also believes the AT&T / T-Mobile deal could be a good thing for Sprint. Larsen thinks the merger could cause some subscribers to leave the new mega-carrier and flee to Sprint. Beyond that, AT&T may be required to divest some markets in order for the deal to be
