Redial On! - Call back dropped calls automatically!

Dropped calls are a fact of life when you use a cell phone. No matter what carrier you have, or what kind of phone, you will eventually have a dropped call. Redial On! is a small utility application for BlackBerry that will automatically call back for you when your call is dropped due to network error. You simply set up the criteria you want the app to function under, and it runs in the background, ready to spring into action when needed. There are several options you can choose, such as having the app only run during scheduled hours/days and number of redial attemps.

Another aspect to Redial On! is for outgoing calls. It can be really frustrating to need to talk to someone, but when you call all you get is a busy signal. Redial On! can be set to continue trying to call back for you until the call goes through, or for as many times as you set it for. No matter how you use this app, there are a lot of different options so you can customize it to your specific needs.
Redial On! is on sale in the CrackBerry store for $3.99 (normally $5.99), and a free 7 day trial is available. If you live in an area with spotty coverage, or frequently call people who don't have call waiting, this app may be just what you need! Try it out, let us know what you think in the comments below.

Next 10-inch Android tablet mysteriously surfaces for 180

UK clothes retailer Next probably isn’t the first place you’d expect to see an Android tablet, but the company is obviously hoping to pick up a few slate sales from being browsing electronics in-between their skinny jeans. The vaguely-named Next 10-inch Tablet runs an unspecified version of Android on an ARM11 powered slab, with a WXGA display and 8GB of storage.
There’s also a memory card reader, WiFi and two USB 2.0 ports, together with microphone and headphone sockets. Next says it works in portrait and landscape orientation, but there’s no word on if that’s an automatic flip or a manual one.

Without having more information it’s tricky to say whether, at 180 ($286) this is a good deal or not. It’s certainly cheaper than an iPad, but then again hardware is generally only one very small part of the story with tablets.

Sprint CEO and execs resign from Clearwire WiMAX board

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse has resigned from the Clearwire board of directors, along with Keith Cowan, Sprint’s president of strategy and corporate initiatives and Steven Elfman, their president of network operations, citing “an abundance of caution” over recent developments in antitrust law. The exact nature of the concerns was not explained, but the decision apparently came after questions raised by Clearwire.

Interestingly, the announcement comes after T-Mobile were tipped to be considering investing in Clearwire, though no public confirmation of a potential deal has been made. Sprint still has four appointees on the Clearwire board, and reserve the right to appoint up to three more at a later date.
Press Release:
Clearwire Announces Changes to Board of Directors
KIRKLAND, Wash., Sep 30, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) –
Clearwire Corporation (NASDAQ: CLWR), a leading provider of wireless broadband services and operator of the largest 4G network in the country, today announced that Daniel R. Hesse, Keith O. Cowan, and Steven L. Elfman have resigned from the Clearwire board of directors. Hesse, Cowan and Elfman are all officers of Sprint Nextel Corporation and were nominated to the Clearwire board by Sprint.
Clearwire was informed by Sprint that the decisions to resign were made out of an abundance of caution to address questions raised by Clearwire regarding new developments in antitrust law. Clearwire’s board structure allows for 13 members, seven of which Sprint has the right to appoint. The remaining four Sprint appointees to the Clearwire board are unchanged, and Sprint reserved the right to appoint new members to the Clearwire board at a later date.
About Clearwire
Clearwire Corporation (NASDAQ:CLWR), through its operating subsidiaries, is a leading provider of wireless broadband services. Clearwire’s 4G network is currently available in areas of the U.S. where approximately 66 million people live and the company plans to continue to expand its 4G coverage. Clearwire’s open all-IP network, combined with significant spectrum holdings, provides an unprecedented combination of speed and mobility to deliver next generation broadband access. The company markets its 4G service through its own brand called CLEAR(R) as well as through its wholesale relationships with Sprint, Comcast and Time Warner Cable. Strategic investors include Intel Capital, Comcast, Sprint, Google, Time Warner Cable, and Bright House Networks. Clearwire is headquartered in Kirkland, Wash. Additional information is available at http://www.clearwire.com.
Forward-Looking Statements
This release, and other written and oral statements made by Clearwire from time to time, contains forward-looking statements which are based on management’s current expectations and beliefs, as well as on a number of assumptions concerning future events made with information that is currently available. Forward-looking statements may include, without limitation, management’s expectations regarding future financial and operating performance and financial condition; proposed transactions; network development and market launch plans; strategic plans and objectives; industry conditions; the strength of the balance sheet; and liquidity and financing needs. The words “will,” “would,” “may,” “should,” “estimate,” “project,” “forecast,” “intend,” “expect,” “believe,” “target,” “designed,” “plan” and similar expressions are intended to identify forward-looking statements. Readers are cautioned not to put undue reliance on such forward- looking statements, which are not a guarantee of performance and are subject to a number of uncertainties and other factors, many of which are outside of Clearwire’s control, which could cause actual results to differ materially and adversely from such statements. Some factors that could cause actual results to differ are:
We are an early-stage company with a history of operating losses and we expect to continue to realize significant net losses for the foreseeable future.
Our current and future plans are subject to a number of conditions and uncertainties, including among others, our ability to manage ongoing market development activities (including the development of over 10,000 sites), our performance in launched markets and our access to additional funding.
We regularly evaluate our plans, and we may elect to pursue new or alternative strategies which we believe would be beneficial to our business, including among other things, modifying the pace at which we build our 4G mobile broadband networks, augmenting our network coverage in markets we launch, changing our sales and marketing strategy and or acquiring additional spectrum. Such modifications to our plans could significantly change our capital requirements.
We believe that we require substantial additional financing to maintain our current business plans, and if we are unable to raise such financing on acceptable terms we will need to modify our plans accordingly.
We may fail to realize all of the anticipated benefits of the transactions with Sprint and the strategic investors.
We have deployed a wireless broadband network based on mobile WiMAX technology, and would incur significant costs to deploy alternative technologies. Additionally, such alternative technologies may not perform as we expect on our network and deploying such technologies would result in additional risks to the company.
We currently depend on our commercial partners to develop and deliver the equipment for our legacy and mobile WiMAX networks.
Many of our competitors are better established and have significantly greater resources, and may subsidize their competitive offerings with other products and services.
Our substantial indebtedness and restrictive debt covenants could limit our financing options and liquidity position and may limit our ability to grow our business.
Sprint Nextel Corporation owns a majority of our shares, resulting in Sprint holding a majority voting interest in the Company, and Sprint may have, or may develop in the future, interests that may diverge from other stockholders.
Future sales of large blocks of our common stock may adversely impact our stock price.
For a more detailed description of the factors that could cause such a difference, please refer to Clearwire’s filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, including the information under the heading “Risk Factors” in our Annual Report on Form 10-K filed on February 24, 2010 and our Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q filed on August 5, 2010. Nation rejoices as Consumer Reports fixes crashing iPhone app

It took about a month but now you can fearlessly click on some of the news headings in the free Consumer Reports app and not have it crash.
A couple of weeks ago we reported that the app was unstable after an iOS 4 update. As weeks went by, the app was not updated and had more crashes and explosions than an old Bruce Willis movie. We gave the app a 'not recommended' and felt CR could do better than offer a highly defective piece of software.
Now they've finally done it. The app no longer collapses when you select 'electronics', although CR says it has eliminated, for now, its Gas Prices info. Hey, I like Consumer Reports, and am even a subscriber. I find the reviews helpful, although I often differ with CR opinions on things I've owned and have experience with, like, oh, the iPhone maybe.
Anyway, the app now works, and I'm glad to put it back on my 'recommended' list. Now how about an iPad version? The iPhone version looks pretty fuzzy, and when you up-scale it it's an eye-burner.TUAWNation rejoices as Consumer Reports fixes crashing iPhone app originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 30 Sep 2010 13:00:00 EST. Don?t Believe The Hype, Tablets Aren?t Going To Be This Year?s Must-Have Gift

Sorry, we were wrong. 2010 wasn't the year of tablet like it was deemed back in January. We all had such high hopes for this year, too. We thought that every manufacturer was going to out some-sort of tablet, but that clearly didn't happened. There are a few tablets from various manufacturers, but there are only really three tablets available now that aimed at the general consumer market: The Apple iPad, the Dell Streak, and within weeks, the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Retailers and advertisers are already gearing up for what they believe will be a feeding frenzy for these tablets this holiday season. That's not going to happen. The tablet is not going to be this year's netbook or Furby -- unless that smaller Apple iPad rumor is true.

Are you using Apple's Ping?

Ping is Apple's first earnest foray into the social network game. Introduced with iTunes 10, Ping lets users see the music their friends are buying from the iTunes Store, leave comments, and point out what they like.

There are also several musicians participating. The more active among them post photos and videos, stories, and so on. It's a young network with lots of potential, but for now, some folks are less than impressed. A recent update to iTunes put Ping in your music library (it used to be limited to the iTunes Store) and added a big 'ol sidebar.

Our question to you is: are you using it? I'll admit that my interest has waned, and that's because nearly all of the updates I see are of the "[Person X] is now following [Person Y]" variety, which isn't very interesting. Perhaps if the artists I followed were a bit more active, I might use it more.

Am I the only one? Complete our short poll below and let us know if you're using Ping. We'll post the results at a later time.

Cisco home telepresence tipped for Comcast/Verizon reveal next week

Cisco is tipped to be readying a telepresence device for home use, with partnerships with Verizon and Comcast suggested, according to sources talking to BoomTown. The exact nature of the device is unclear, but it’s believed to cost as low as $200 when “heavily subsidized” or $500 with fewer commitments. Most importantly, Cisco is expected to be pushing their higher quality video than that of arch rival Skype.

A Cisco event is scheduled for next week, promising “a new Cisco consumer experience”; the company’s PR has declined to comment on whether the star of the event will be the unnamed telepresence gadget. It’s unclear whether it will be a standalone video phone, like the ASUS AiGuru SV1T Skype videophone or something that plugs into an existing display – such as an HDTV – as we’ve seenoffered from Panasonic and others.
More interestingly, perhaps, it could be a consumer version of the Cisco Cius, a 7-inch enterprise-centric tablet that runs Android and is targeted at mobile video calls. That’s expected to begin shipping to enterprise customers in Q1 2011.

BlackBerry 6 shows up on Bold 9700, Pearl 3G -- and we check it out

To the untrained eye, you might think you're looking at a garden variety Bold 9700 here -- but you'd be wrong. So wrong! It's actually running BlackBerry 6, something that no device other than the touchscreen-equipped Torch has managed to do in public (in an official capacity, anyway) so far. We're not convinced that the multiple home screen navigation bar concept translates very well here -- you've got to scroll up then left or right to move between bars, which seems like too much trouble when you can just get to your entire list of apps with approximately the same amount of effort. The WebKit browser is unquestionably a huge improvement over what BlackBerry OS 5.0 users are used to, but we still witnessed it bog down significantly when checking out ye olde standby engadget.com, to the point where other UI actions in the OS were impacted. We guess it's going to take another generation of hardware or two with quicker cores (and more RAM) to fix up that stuff... hopefully. In addition to the 9700, we also checked out the re-upped Pearl 3G, which is exactly what you'd expect in practice: the same user experience, just narrower. A rep told us that the updates are expected to launch within a few weeks, though it'll depend on your carrier. Follow the break for some quick videos!

Sony, Warner and Disney mulling $30 at-home viewing option, we laugh and wait for the $100 option

Ah, "premium" video-on-demand. Media controllers have been fighting the inevitable forever, but now it seems they're finally coming around to the future -- letting users watch silver screen gems (or duds, for what it's worth) in their home shortly after release in the theater. Before you bust out the golf claps for these dudes and dudettes, you should know that they're planning to ding you for around $30 for the privilege, so it's only remotely of interest if you happen to have a family of eight. According to a new Bloomberg report, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros., and Walt Disney Co. are all in talks with major cable systems to "offer films for as much as $30 per showing soon after they run in theaters." Disney's also thinking of streaming its content to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with Warner expected to begin testing an offering later this year that lets consumers watch new(ish) release material for "$20 to $30 per viewing." Of course, we guess it can't hurt to throw the option out there and see exactly who is desperate enough, but we're guessing this won't exactly be the demise of the cinema. Franklin Roadie modular music system needs a table to boom

We've seen speaker systems that use flat surfaces as a diaphragm before, but Franklin's Roadie might be the first modular to splash down in the new millennium. It's a three part system (if you want it to be), consisting of the EVS-2000, EVS-3000 and EVS-4000. In order of mention, you've got a base model that accepts sources via a 3.5mm input jack, a rechargeable battery with SD card slot, and a bonus tweeter / equalizer. It ain't much good in your hand, but slap it on a table (or any other flat surface, like a floor) and the tunes start to boom. Or become marginally more audible, anyway. The trio should go on sale soon for $99.99 as a bundle, while the 2000 and 3000 can be picked up by themselves for $49.99 / $79.99, respectively.Continue reading Franklin Roadie modular music system needs a table to boomFranklin Roadie modular music system needs a table to boom originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 28 Sep 2010 18:16:00 EDT. Nokia Research Centre Shows Off Stretchable Electronic Skin

The Nokia Morph concept phone has been something that Nokia fans (and even non-Nokia fans) have been aching for. The ability to change your phone into something that you need, whenever you need it, just by molding it to a different form is an exciting idea. And it looks like, while Nokia has been pretty quiet about the Morph for awhile now, the company is still putting quite a bit of effort into getting that idea into the real world.

On the Nokia blog, the company presented some pretty exciting developments, which are taking place currently at the Nokia Research Centre in Cambridge, UK. The first of which is the new “stretchable” electronic skin. Nokia would utilize it as an electronic touchpad, which could be pulled, stretched, and crumpled all while still being able to be used. It utilizes evaporated gold as a conductor, to make it pliable and yet still functional.
The whole thing is still in development, and probably will be for another few years, but it’s good to see Nokia still working on the possibility of giving consumers a truly shape-shifting phone. Levytator claims to be the world's first bendy escalator, has the patents to prove it (video)

You've seen conveyor belts before, most probably at your local airport ferrying beaten-up luggage in circles, but for some reason the same tech doesn't seem to have been applied to people yet. Leave it to City University London prof Jack Levy to correct that oversight with his eponymous Levytator -- an escalator that follows freeform curves (but not convention!) and offers a better "cost per usable step" than your typical moving stairs. Patented in Europe, the USA, and even China, all this thing needs is the gentle push of a kindly investor -- see the video after the break to determine if it's worth your cash.

Acer unveils AMD-infused Aspire Z3100 AIO, Revo 3700 nettop now available for $349

Can you smell it in the air? Autumn is most assuredly here. Sure, you can deduce as much from equinoxes or changing leaves, but if you ask us, it's almost just as precise to go by a new, pre-holiday product cycle. Acer's taken the cue with two new desktop SKUs -- one each in the nettop and all-in-one categories. First with the latter: the 21.5-inch AZ3100 all-in-one (pictured). A tier lower than the AZ5700, this one lacks the multitouch and TV tuner, and instead utilizes a 2GHz AMD Athlon II 170u processor, NVIDIA GeForce 9200 graphics, 3GB RAM, and 500GB HDD. Add in a DVD drive, webcam, HDMI, six USB 2.0 ports, Windows 7 Home Premium, and a side chassis for "cable management." It does best its older brother in the price category, though, at just $599 -- about five Benjamins lower.

As for the Aspire Revo 3700, it was actually announced earlier this month, but now we've got the skinny on this book-sized nettop's price and availability. That'd be $349 for the tag, and a street date of approximately... now, according to the press release. Speaking of which, all pertinent paperwork can be found after the break. Study: we're keeping our mobiles longer, despite sinking prices

Had your current cellphone for the better part of the this century? Turns out you aren't the only one -- according to new research gathered by J.D. Power and Associates, Americans are holding onto their mobiles for longer than ever these days. In fact, the study found that the length of time customers keep their traditional wireless cell phone has increased by 17 percent from 2009, with the average customer holding onto their phone for around 20.5 months. That's the longest period since this study began tracking the data in 1999, when the average was 17.3 months. Kirk Parsons, senior director of wireless services at the company, feels that the recent economic downturn has a lot to do with folks keeping their existing phones longer, while we're guessing that it has to do with existing phones simply being "good enough."

Furthermore, anyone who is even remotely tuned into the mobile world knows that widespread 4G is just around the bend, giving folks reason to hold off on renewing their contract until WiMAX / LTE comes to their carrier of choice. Curiously, phone prices are lower than ever before, which should mean that it's even less expensive to upgrade now than in the past. Of course, none of that matters if your existing phone contract isn't up (or you aren't due for a discounted renewal), and the savings on the hardware is likely being devoured by the extra fees we're paying for messaging and data. So, are you in the "run it till it dies" camp, or are you wondering who on Earth this survey (shown in full after the break) is referring to?Continue reading Study: we're keeping our mobiles longer, despite sinking pricesStudy: we're keeping our mobiles longer, despite sinking prices originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 13:27:00 EDT. Raytheon revamps Sarcos exoskeleton, creates better, faster and stronger XOS 2 (video)

When we first laid eyes on the Sarcos XOS military exoskeleton three years ago, its sheer power and dexterity left us in awe... but as you can see immediately above, that wasn't enough for Raytheon. Today, the defense contractor's unveiling the XOS 2, a lighter, stronger robotic suit that uses 50 percent less power for dropping and giving us several hundred pushups. Video and a press release after the break don't specify the suit's military duties (they're focused on instilling the notion that the XOS 2 is a real-life Iron Man) but we can definitely imagine these causing some serious damage if Hammer Industries decided to weaponize that high-pressure hydraulic frame.

Update: We previously stated that the suit didn't need to be tethered to a power source for operation, but that information was incorrect.

RIM introduces PlayBook -- the BlackBerry tablet

Today at Research In Motion's annual BlackBerry Developer Conference, CEO Mike Lazaridis announced the company's new tablet -- the PlayBook. The tablet will utilize an OS created by the recently acquired QNX (just as we'd heard previous to the announcement) called the BlackBerry Tablet OS which will offer full OpenGL and POSIX support alongside web standards such as HTML5 (which is all tied into RIM's new WebWorks SDK). Lazaridis was joined on stage by the company's founder, Dan Dodge, who said that "QNX is going to enable things that you have never seen before," and added that the PlayBook would be "an incredible gaming platform for publishers and the players." RIM also touted the PlayBook's ability to handle Flash content via Flash 10.1, as well as Adobe AIR apps. The new slate -- which Lazaridis described as "the first professional tablet" -- will sport a 7-inch, 1024 x 600, capacitive multitouch display, a Cortex A9-based, dual-core 1GHz CPU (the company calls it the "fastest tablet ever"), 1GB of RAM, and a 3 megapixel front-facing camera along with a 5 megapixel rear lens (and yes, there will be video conferencing). There was no mention of onboard storage capacity during the keynote, though the devices we just spied in our eyes-on post are labeled 16GB and 32GB on their back panels. The PlayBook will be capable of 1080p HD video, and comes equipped with an HDMI port as well as a microUSB jack, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, and Bluetooth 2.1. The device clocks in at a svelte 5.1- by 7.6-inches, is only 0.4-inches thick, and weighs just 400g (or about 0.9 pounds).

In terms of interface, the OS looks like a mashup of webOS and the BlackBerry OS, even allowing for multitasking via what amounts to a "card" view. Interestingly, RIM and QNX boasted of the PlayBook's multimedia and gaming functions, but Mike Lazaridis also described the tablet as "an amplified view of what's already on your BlackBerry." That's due largely in part to a function of the tablet which allows you to siphon data off of your BlackBerry handset via Bluetooth tethering and display it on your PlayBook (a la the ill-fated Palm Foleo). While the PlayBook doesn't seem to rely on phone content alone, the press release from the company says that users can "use their tablet and smartphone interchangeably without worrying about syncing or duplicating data." RIM didn't hand out any solid launch dates beyond "early 2011," and of course, there was no mention of retail price. We've got a slew of content after the break, including the PlayBook spec rundown, the company's press release, and a full video of the device (and UI) in action -- so take a look!

Rockchip Android desk phone gets video demo

Rockchip’s Android-based desk phone was one of the sleeper surprises at IFA 2010, and having seen Engadget Chinese‘s video demo we’re finding we’d quite like on of our own. The unnamed phone places VoIP calls over WiFi or your mobile network, but also allows for video calls, web browsing and multimedia playback.

We’re still not entirely sure of the specifications – we’re guessing it uses a roughly 7-inch touchscreen – but it also seems that Rockchip might want to do a little more work on their Android build. Several of the hands-on photos show the phone rotated into portrait orientation; not a problem with an Android smartphone, but less ergonomic when you’re having to flip your desk phone around.
It’s unclear whether that’s down to a limitation of the phone or something Rockchip actually wanted to include. Either way, we can see it being a stumbling block for this “home media player” should any companies actually decide to pick up the reference design.

RIM Unveils The BlackBerry PlayBook

New Professional-Grade Tablet Delivers Unmatched Power and Web Performance

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA--(Marketwire - Sept. 27, 2010) - BlackBerry DEVCON 2010 - Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today redefined the possibilities for mobile computing with the unveiling of its new professional-grade BlackBerry PlayBook tablet and BlackBerry Tablet OS.

Perfect for either large organizations or an "army of one", the BlackBerry PlayBook is designed to give users what they want, including uncompromised web browsing, true multitasking and high performance multimedia, while also providing advanced security features, out-of-the-box enterprise support and a breakthrough development platform for IT departments and developers. The incredibly powerful and innovative BlackBerry PlayBook is truly a game-changing product in the growing tablet marketplace.

"RIM set out to engineer the best professional-grade tablet in the industry with cutting-edge hardware features and one of the world's most robust and flexible operating systems," said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion. "The BlackBerry PlayBook solidly hits the mark with industry leading power, true multitasking, uncompromised web browsing and high performance multimedia."

The Tablet You'll Want to Take Everywhere

This beautifully designed and incredibly powerful tablet is ultra portable, ultra thin and super convenient for both work and play. Measuring less than half an inch thick and weighing less than a pound, the BlackBerry PlayBook features a vivid 7" high resolution display that looks and feels great in your hand. With such a unique mix of utility, performance and portability, you'll want to take it everywhere.

The New Benchmark in Tablet Performance

At its heart, the BlackBerry PlayBook is a multitasking powerhouse. Its groundbreaking performance is jointly fueled by a 1 GHz dual-core processor and the new BlackBerry Tablet OS which supports true symmetric multiprocessing. Together, the abundant processing power and highly sophisticated OS enable the BlackBerry PlayBook to provide users with true multitasking and a highly-responsive and fluid touch screen experience for apps and content services.

Uncompromised Web Browsing

With support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Adobe Mobile AIR and HTML-5, the BlackBerry PlayBook provides customers with an uncompromised, high-fidelity web experience and offers them the ability to enjoy all of the sites, games and media on the web. For more than a decade, the mobile industry has worked to bridge the gap between the "real web" and mobile devices through various apps and technologies and, in fact, a significant number of mobile apps today still simply serve as a proxy for web content that already exists on the web. The BlackBerry PlayBook closes that gap and brings the real, full web experience to mobile users while also opening new and more exciting opportunities for developers and content publishers.

High Performance Multimedia

The BlackBerry PlayBook features premium multimedia features to support high-quality mobile experiences. It includes dual HD cameras for video capture and video conferencing that can both record HD video at the same time, and an HDMI-out port for presenting one's creations on external displays. The BlackBerry PlayBook also offers rich stereo sound and a media player that rivals the best in the industry.

BlackBerry Integration

For those BlackBerry PlayBook users who carry a BlackBerry smartphone*, it will also be possible to pair their tablet and smartphone using a secure Bluetooth connection. This means they can opt to use the larger tablet display to seamlessly and securely view any of the email, BBMTM, calendar, tasks, documents and other content that resides on (or is accessible through) their smartphone. They can also use their tablet and smartphone interchangeably without worrying about syncing or duplicating data. This secure integration of BlackBerry tablets and smartphones is a particularly useful feature for those business users who want to leave their laptop behind.

Enterprise Ready

Thanks to the seamless and secure Bluetooth pairing experience and the highly secure underlying OS architecture, the BlackBerry PlayBook is enterprise ready and compatible (out-of-the-box) with BlackBerry Enterprise Server. When connected over Bluetooth, the smartphone content is viewable on the tablet, but the content actually remains stored on the BlackBerry smartphone and is only temporarily cached on the tablet (and subject to IT policy controls). With this approach to information security, IT departments can deploy the BlackBerry PlayBook to employees out-of-the-box without worrying about all the security and manageability issues that arise when corporate data is stored on yet another device.

QNX Neutrino Reliability

The BlackBerry Tablet OS is built upon the QNX Neutrino microkernel architecture, one of the most reliable, secure and robust operating system architectures in the world. Neutrino has been field hardened for years and is being used to support mission-critical applications in everything from planes, trains and automobiles to medical equipment and the largest core routers that run the Internet. The new BlackBerry Tablet OS leverages and builds upon the many proven strengths of this QNX Neutrino architecture to support a professional grade tablet experience and to redefine the possibilities for mobile computing.

An OS Built for Developers

The Neutrino based microkernel architecture in the BlackBerry Tablet OS delivers exceptional performance, high scalability, Common Criteria EAL 4+ security, and support for industry standard tools that are already familiar to hundreds of thousands of developers. The OS is fully POSIX compliant enabling easy portability of C-based code, supports Open GL for 2D and 3D graphics intensive applications like gaming, and will run applications built in Adobe Mobile AIR as well as the new BlackBerry WebWorksTM app platform announced today (which will allow apps to be written to run on BlackBerry PlayBook tablets as well as BlackBerry smartphones with BlackBerry 6). The BlackBerry Tablet OS will also support Java enabling developers to easily bring their existing BlackBerry 6 Java applications to the BlackBerry Tablet OS environment.

Key features and specifications of the BlackBerry PlayBook include:

7" LCD, 1024 x 600, WSVGA, capacitive touch screen with full multi-touch and gesture support
BlackBerry Tablet OS with support for symmetric multiprocessing
1 GHz dual-core processor
1 GB RAM
Dual HD cameras (3 MP front facing, 5 MP rear facing), supports 1080p HD video recording
Video playback: 1080p HD Video, H.264, MPEG, DivX, WMV
Audio playback: MP3, AAC, WMA
HDMI video output
Wi-Fi - 802.11 a/b/g/n
Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
Connectors: microHDMI, microUSB, charging contacts
Open, flexible application platform with support for WebKit/HTML-5, Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Adobe Mobile AIR, Adobe Reader, POSIX, OpenGL, Java
Ultra thin and portable:

Measures 5.1"x7.6"x0.4" (130mm x 193mm x 10mm)

Additional features and specifications of the BlackBerry PlayBook will be shared on or before the date this product is launched in retail outlets.

* RIM intends to also offer 3G and 4G models in the future.

Availability

The BlackBerry PlayBook is expected to be available in retail outlets and other channels in the United States in early 2011 with rollouts in other international markets beginning in (calendar) Q2.

RIM will begin working with developers and select corporate customers next month to begin development and early testing efforts.

The BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK is planned for release in the coming weeks and developers can register for early access at www.blackberry.com/developers/tabletos.

Wizup emerges from Windows Phone 7 developer challenge: think Shazam, but for ads

It's not a brand new concept or anything, but rather than forcing mobile users to scan QR codes in order to access more information about a given product or advertisement, Wizup is able to recognize far more esoteric items. Created as a part of the Windows Phone 7 developer challenge, this piece of software is able to listen to radio stations (at least in France), understand images from magazines and even recognize TV channels. Simply snap a picture or let it listen in (much like Shazam for song titles), and it then delivers all sorts of germane content to the mobile's screen. It's a dream come true for marketers, but better still, it makes digging for more information a whole lot easier on the end user. Head on past the break for a demonstration video -- if you've been denying it thus far, good luck as you continue to resist the Augmented Reality Revolution.Continue reading Wizup emerges from Windows Phone 7 developer challenge: think Shazam, but for adsWizup emerges from Windows Phone 7 developer challenge: think Shazam, but for ads originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 11:30:00 EDT. European Union closes Apple investigation

I think we can call this one "saved by a policy change." Earlier this month, Apple changed its rules and is now allowing developers to use third-party tools for creating apps for iOS devices. In a statement released this weekend, the EU said it welcomed Apple's changed policies, and that the investigation would be closed.

Apple also loosened policies on cross-border warranty repair of computers and iOS products. Previously, people who bought a product in one EU country and tried to have it fixed under warranty in another EU country encountered red tape or a refusal to fix the product, but apparently that issue's been fixed as well.

This recent change is on top of Apple settling a case with the US Department of Justice that dealt with agreements between major tech firms about not poaching employees. The settlement involved other companies including Pixar, Google, and Intel. Apple is clearly getting a bit more liberal in the way it runs the business. There's nothing like a little competition and litigation to get things moving.TUAWEuropean Union closes Apple investigation originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 26 Sep 2010 17:00:00 EST. Apple sues startup over "pod" name

As we've seen before, Apple is laying claim to the word "pod." This time, the target is Sector Labs (SL), who are nearly 10 years into development of their Video Pod.

More accurately, Apple believes that customers will confuse SL's Video Pod for an Apple product because of the name. The company first gained the attention of Apple legal back in 2009.

Still, SL's Daniel Kokin doesn't see the problem. "My team started working on the Video Pod in 2000, and it took us years to go from prototype to funded," he said. "At that time, Apple didn't even enter our minds as a competitor." He goes on to note that his company's product focuses on projection, something that Apple is not doing.

This is hardly the first time Apple has asked a company or product to change their name. Remember when iLounge was iPodLounge? Or PodShow?

Good luck to all parties involved.

AT&T HTC Mondrian ads leak ahead of tipped Oct 21 Windows Phone 7 debut

If you hadn’t already guessed, Windows Phone 7 is fast approaching. Not only have further “source familiar” with the launch schedule tipped Neowin to an October 21st worldwide launch event – as well as an October 11th NYC “open house” to show off some of the devices – a couple of leaked HTC Mondrian adverts were spotted by WMPoweruser.

Videos after the cut

The HTC Mondrian is headed to AT&T – both according to previous leaks and to these new adverts themselves – and looks a whole lot like the HTC Schubert spotted in the wild a while back. Its specifications are obviously unconfirmed, but going by its Mozart Euro cousin we’re expecting a WVGA Super LCD display, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and an 8-megapixel camera.
As for the tipped launch date, that’s supposedly for the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. No confirmation on whether WP7 handsets will arrive at the same time in the US or, as was rumored before, that they won’t show up there until November.

iOS alarms broken for New Zealand users after Daylight Saving

We just started Daylight Saving Time in New Zealand yesterday. Since then, many iOS users here have experienced what's probably one of the weirdest bugs I've ever seen: our alarms are now going off an hour early. My iPhone's alarm woke me up at 5:50 in the morning today instead of 6:50, and it turns out I'm not the only one.
In the iPhone's built-in Clock app, setting a recurring alarm will cause it to trigger an hour early every time if you're running iOS 4.1, iTunes 10.0.1, and live in a Southern Hemisphere country that's just gone over to Daylight Saving Time (which, for now at least, just means New Zealand). It's also been affecting US users in Indiana since late June because of the weird time zone situation in that state. For some reason, non-recurring alarms aren't affected; so far, changing recurring alarms to non-recurring is the only thing that's fixed the problem.
Standard Time doesn't start in the US until November 7, which is right around the time that iOS 4.2 is supposed to come out. Since this bug is probably something that can only be addressed by an iOS update, and since a relatively small portion of iOS users will be affected, I won't be surprised at all if Apple sits on this bug until November and bundles the fix into iOS 4.2. Meanwhile, Australian iOS users in territories that observe DST will have something to look forward to: unless this gets fixed before October 3rd, their alarms are going to start going off an hour earlier, too.

Verizon May Not Accept Apple?s Contract Terms for iPhone Launch

Launching the iPhone may be a hard proposition for Verizon, despite what the wireless company’s CEO said recently. With Verizon iPhone 4 rumors at an all time high, especially with talk about production beginning as early as November of this year. But, if a new report from Mike Abramsky of RBC Capital Markets is accurate, then the note might dispel any chance of a Verizon-branded iPhone. Interesting that this isn’t the first time the contract-talks have been brought up in recent months.

Abramsky believes that the iPhone will see other wireless carriers in the United States, but that Verizon may be too headstrong, or perhaps to dead-set on preserving their presence in the Android-based smartphone market, to actually ever launch the device in question. The report states that Apple may turn to T-Mobile, or even Sprint, to expand the iPhone’s presence on networks here in the United States. Abramsky’s note says, “Verizon may not accept Appel’s contract terms that risk its Android franchise, which could face significant cannibalization from pent up iPhone demand on its network.” He went on to add that he does not believe that Apple would want to be “second banana” to Android on Verizon, and that they would not be willing to accept anything less than prime marketing from the wireless carrier.
He went on to add that, despite the fact that Verizon’s CEO wants an iPhone that supports Verizon’s 4G (LTE) efforts, these contract term discussions may not be resolved by then. “This may or not ever get resolved even under LTE; the longer this takes, the more entrenched Android becomes at Verizon so the more difficult to strike a deal.” He notes that recent reports of an iPhone 4 being developed with CDMA-based technology could mean that the device is heading to other international markets, like China Telecom or KDDI in Japan, which we’ve heard in the past as well.
The rumor mill would be alive and well if there were only one-sided rumors fueling it, but it certainly makes it more interesting to hear what might be going on both sides. If an iPhone is heading to Verizon, then it’s more than likely going to support LTE. If it’s not, then it probably will not be a big blow to Apple, as Abramsky points out in his report. With Verizon’s presence in Android well known at this point, it may be enough for Verizon to stick with it, and ride out the iPhone storm. All of this could also relate to Verizon’s CEO mentioning that they had “not earned” the iPhone yet, because they haven’t come to a decision contractually.

The App Dilemma

In the year 2020 there will be 31 billion connected devices and 25 million* applications available for purchase or download. There is no question that apps and the app marketplace is becoming one of the most important trends in the industry.
Software drove the initial PC boom of the 80?s and 90?s and it is again driving the boom of the Smartphone market. During that time period predominantly here on the West Coast we had a thriving retail computer software outlet called Egghead Software. Egghead Software was where you could go to shop for all the latest shrink wrap software. Today the in store experience Egghead Software represented is now found in our current App Store marketplaces. There is however a dilemma with our current App marketplace that didn?t exist back then to the extent it does today.

The Dilemma
This dilemma is platform fragmentation. When the PC was the hottest piece of hardware on the market Windows was the most dominant platform, for PC?s it still is today. There were multiple platforms for PC software but none as dominant as Windows. That is not the case in our mobile device ecosystem and I don?t personally believe it will ever be the case with mobile devices. Our mobile platform landscape is fragmented and will remain fragmented. This platform fragmentation will have a much deeper impact on our software landscape then it did in the past with PC?s.
The primary reason is because the life of the mobile device is most likely going to be much shorter then the life of the PC. With all the interesting things happening in mobile devices I wonder what the likely hood is that people will switch platforms based on new device and platform innovation every few years. I could see a future where a consumer went with the latest iPhone one year and then switched to the newest Android device the year after or vice-versa. This seems simple enough unless you think about it from the software application standpoint.
If this consumer has purchased say a dozen or so apps for their iPhone, as soon as they switch to Android they will have to re-purchase these applications, assuming they even exist on the other platform. This is the problem device and software fragmentation may cause in the future which is emphasized by the likely hood of consumers switching platforms.
The Solution
It seems the logical answer is simply stay committed to one single platform. This is in essence generally what happens with PC?s. It would simply be easier if a consumer stuck with one platform but I am not sure that is what consumers will want to do in the future.
Another possible solution is that the software maker could offer a higher premium for the application in order to secure the purchase of their software for whatever platform they choose. Instead of a multi-user license it is more a multi-platform license. Or perhaps if the consumer did not purchase the multi-platform license the software maker could offer the software at a lower price for the different platform if in fact you have already purchased the software on another platform before. What I like about this solution is the software creator owns the customer and the customer relationship in the long run.
Lastly perhaps where it is all going anyway is cloud based applications where apps may be platform agnostic anyway. This would be a very interesting future with deep industry implications on hardware and operating systems but we will have to save that discussion for a later time.
What do you think? How does this platform fragmentation get solved or does it?

CEO Jeff Zucker leaving NBC following Comcast merger, exit stage left

Comcast's acquisition of NBC isn't quite in the bank just yet, but that doesn't mean the upcoming change isn't already dealing an impact. Current CEO and President Jeff Zucker announced today he plans to leave the company sometime following the takeover -- but also noting his final day might not be for another six months from now. "Comcast will be a great new steward, just as GE has been, and they deserve the chance to implement their own vision," he said. We wonder what exactly that new vision might be and how it pertains to the shift in online offerings -- for his part, Zucker's made a few headlines over the years that seem to suggest hesitation / aversion to the current digital transition. No successor has been named, but again, that could very well be half a year away -- as they say, stay tuned.

Update: And now it gets juicy. The New York Times is reporting that Zucker's departure wasn't exactly his call. Apple attempts to patent a smarter camera flash

There's always something intriguing cooking in Cupertino, even if Apple's ovens are full, and the latest item on the list is a novel camera flash assembly you might one day see on an iPhone. Where camera flashes are typically fixed in a single spot on a device, Apple's trying to patent a flash redirector that could whip them around, letting you frame a dimly-lit picture the way you want and automatically adjust the intensity and direction of the flash to get better results. The patent application suggests that devices would have a dedicated lens for the flash, and then a pivot on either that lens or the flash itself to aim, plus an "evaluator" that figures out what needs to be lit and by how much. Alternatively, Apple imagines you might be able to just select an area on a touchscreen camera device (wonder where we'd find one of those?) with your finger and aim the flash yourself, but if we know anything about Apple's love of simplicity they'll try the AI solution first. Either way, it seems like an excellent nighttime equivalent to iOS 4.1's HDR, and something we might like to see on all sorts of shooters, not just those on phones.Apple attempts to patent a smarter camera flash originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 26 Sep 2010 01:22:00 EDT. TUAW's Daily App: Awesome Solitaire

Awesome Solitaire is (surprise!) an awesome solitaire game. The usual card game is so simple by now that presentation is everything, and Awesome Solitaire has presentation in spades. If you play in Awesome mode, the graphics are flashy, you get rewarded with points for combos, and the animation looks smooth and professional. Heck, the background is even animated with the accelerometer. My one argument is that there's no sound on the app at all -- as flashy and smooth as the graphics are, you'd think there would be some sparkling sounds to accompany them. But then again, I often turn the sounds on my phone down (especially in public), so the lack of sound on a pick up and play game like this doesn't hurt too much.

This is the absolute coolest version of solitaire you will ever play on your iPhone. There aren't a lot of actual game options (there are lots of other versions if you want a little variety), but if you just want to sit back and move solitaire cards around, this is the way to do it.

Oh, and one more thing: the app is free through the weekend. You really have no excuses at all -- go on over to the App Store and download this one.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Awesome Solitaire originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 08:00:00 EST. iPad in Target stores from October 2nd 2010

Target has confirmed that it will begin stocking Apple’s iPad in-store come October 2 2010, with all six versions of the iOS slate being offered. Beyond greater physical availability than just Apple and Best Buy stores, however, there will be no great incentive to buy from your local Target; prices will kick off at the same $499 for the 16GB WiFi iPad.

As well as the WiFi-only iPad, Target will offer the model with integrated 3G connectivity. Using AT&T’s network, the 3G is set up entirely on-device and doesn’t require calling the carrier; users can manage their own tariffs via the iPad’s settings pages, and with no minimum contract can choose to only activate the cellular connectivity during certain months.
