BlackBerry 8980 exposed by FCC

It looks like our friends at the FCC have given the BlackBerry 8980, the presumed successor to the Curve 8900, a properouting. Aside from the above picture, the FCC has the user manual for theunreleasedand unannounced RIM handsetavailablefor viewing as well. The device will have a quad-band GSM antenna, Wi-Fi b/g/n, 3.2 megapixel camera with flash, and — judging by theinstructionsin the user manual — ship with BlackBerry OS 5. The device looks extremely similar to the BlackBerry 9700, aside from that sensual 8900 keyboard. Thoughts? [Via Phone Scoop] Read

Apple reportedly names next-gen iPad camera supplier

Rumors that Apple’s next-generation iPad will include at least one camera gain purchase Tuesday morning as a new report suggests Apple has named its camera lens supplier for its upcoming tablet. Citing market rumors instigated by a public filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange, DigiTimes reports that Largan Precision has been awarded a contract that will make it the sole supplier of lens modules for the second-generation iPad. Largan also supplies 5-megapixel cameras for Apple’s iPhone 4. The inclusion of a front-facing camera for FaceTime video chat is almost a given at this point, and the iPad will also reportedly include a rear-facing camera ? possibly the same 5-megapixel optics currently found in the iPhone 4. Motorola split wraps up on January 4th

Just in time for CES, eh? We knew it was happening at some point in January, and Motorola has just announced that it'll formally be split into two companies as of January 4th, 2011. Actually, that's not technically accurate: Motorola Mobility -- the phone and set-top box guys -- will be spun off into their own entity, while the parent company will change its name from Motorola to Motorola Solutions, responsible for the company's infrastructure businesses. Shareholders of the current company as of December 21st will receive one share of Mobility for every eight shares they've got in their possession right now, while the remainder of the company will enact a 1-for-7 reverse split; as of the 4th, you'll be looking at two stock symbols: MMI for Mobility and MSI for Solutions. So... who's buying? Follow the break for the official press release.Continue reading Motorola split wraps up on January 4thMotorola split wraps up on January 4th originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 30 Nov 2010 17:19:00 EDT. Pictures published by the FCC show the 8980 to have a full QWERTY keyboard, 3.2 megapixel camera with flash, optical trackpad, and 3.5mm headset jack. PwnageTool offers risky iPhone 3G, 3GS unlock

Those eager to carrier-unlock their iPhone 3G/3GS under the latest firmware (and only the latest firmware) have an option, if the risk of using iPad code does not dissuade them. The iPhone Dev Team has released a new version of PwnageTool that uses the 6.15.00 baseband from iPad firmware 3.2.2, which runs happily on the iPhone 3G and 3GS, as a result of all three devices using the very same Infineon radio chip.

This unlock isn't for the "weekend warrior." A mistake could render your device unable to execute a full restore ever again. In addition, Apple Store employees will frown upon you if you approach them for advice with an iPhone running iPad code, and that's just the beginning. The more patient among us can wait until the team releases an official bundle.

Richard Branson's iPad-only Project magazine to debut Tuesday

Mega entrepreneur Richard Branson is set to release his iPad-only magazine, Project, tomorrow. That's Jeff Bridges on the cover, no doubt talking Tron inside. This issue seems to focus on pop culture, with articles about a French record label and a new super car from Jaguar teased on the front cover. Plus, the official blog has stories about gadgets, clothing, Internet culture and movies.

That's about all we know, really. There's no word on pricing, navigation, business model, etc. We'll find out soon enough. One can only assume that the super-competitive Branson is thrilled to have delivered an iPad-only publication before Rupert Murdoch. You can watch a brief (and we mean brief) teaser video after the break.

More sources claim iPad 2 will have USB, Retina Display, more

New sources have reported that the upcoming iPad 2 will include 5 new "key" features, ones that will likely boost the tablet's sales exponentially.

If accurate, the reports say the iPad 2 will add a front-facing camera for video conferencing (and FaceTime), USB ports, Retina Display, 3-axis gyroscope and a carbon fiber (lighter/thinnner) body.

The most notable of the features may be the addition of USB ports, which Apple has never added to any of their iOS devices.

Retina Display, seen on fourth-generation iPods and iPhones, enhances image performance and colors.

The 3-axis gyroscopes, paired with the existing accelerometer, should provide game developers a new platform for full six-axis gaming.

While still unconfirmed, the iPad 2 should see an April 2011 release, possibly available in multiple sizes.Permalink | Comments

Chrome OS still expected to launch next month

Despite their note that Chrome OS would not be available on any hardware in 2010, the search giant has said today that the operating system may still launch next month, in a limited software beta.

The company would "not go into details" on when or in what condition the operating system will launch, but it does confirm a public release is scheduled for this year.

Bugs in the software have dwindled, and a pre-release build is in the works.

The operating system will work on all PCs and tablets, but is designed to run best on netbooks.

Google Chrome OS should see a full release in the Q1 2011.

PlayStation Phone to be unveiled on December 9th?

French gadget enthusiast blog Nowhereelse has reportedly received a copy of an invitation to a mysterious press event early next month. The event, as the invitation states, is supposedly “the most awaited event of the past 10 years.” While the authenticity of the invitation is anything but confirmed, the implication is clear: Sony Ericsson will supposedly unveil its PlayStation Phone on December 9th. Apple iPad 2 to feature Retina Display, USB port?

DigiTimes is hit or miss and while we’re inclined to think there are some misses in its latest report on Apple’s upcoming iPad 2, there are also some hits ? or safe bets, at least. RED is planning on assembling Peter Jackson’s order by hand starting next month into January and then roll into full production one month after that. They are hoping for general availability by NAB in April, but as usual with RED, that’s not something written in stone. The Hobbit starts filming in February. [Via Engadget] Read

How popularity on Facebook and Twitter helped predict the election

It appears that how popular you are on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter actually had a real world effect on the November elections in the United States.

Candidates with more "likes" on Facebook won 71 percent of the time in the Senate elections while candidates with more Twitter followers won 74 percent of the time.

Facebook said that in 77 of the 118 races it followed in the Senate and the House, the winner had more "likes" than the opponent did.

If you had double the amount of "likes," the average margin of victory was 3.9 percent.

There also seemed to be a correlation to money raised and spent, as one big spender, Jeff Greene of Florida, spent $24 million and did not even win his primary. The primary winner, Kendrick Meek, had 24,000 "likes" on Facebook to Greene's lowly 644.

Of course, social networking popularity did not help a few high profile candidates like "I am not a witch" Christine O'Donnell, who was very popular on Twitter and Facebook but got crushed in the election by 17 percent. Meg Whitman, the billionaire, spent the most money and had the third highest amount of Facebook likes but still lost the California governor race.

Says ABC News: "[Social media] provides information about comparisonstrends and changes could be informative on the subset of people on it. You get more information out of it if you respect limitations. If you try to get too much, you get nothing."Permalink | Comments

Official statement from Research In Motion regarding the removal of Kik

Well, that didn't take long. We just received an official statement from Research In Motion regarding the removal of Kik messenger from BlackBerry App World. While the statement makes no mention of the revocation of Kiks signing keys or anything like that, it does clarify the situation a little further, which is what we were hoping for. Below is the statement from RIM regarding the Kik application:

RIM became aware of a number of issues and customer concerns regarding the Kik app and service. Following discussions with Kik, the app was removed from BlackBerry App World on November 12. Upon further investigation, RIM concluded that Kik had breached contractual obligations. Based on the broad scope and seriousness of the issues and concerns, RIM terminated its agreements with Kik and withdrew RIM?s support for Kik?s service.

Interesting developments, that?s for sure. After reading that, I'm not so sure Kik will be allowed back into BlackBerry App World. Of course, that?s just my personal thoughts on the situation, share yours in the comments.

Boxee Box owners can be thankful for their first firmware update

Just a couple of weeks after its debut, the Boxee Box is getting its first software update today. While it might not address all the concerns raised in our review, this edition does include fixes for notable issues like 1080i playback problems, WiFi connectivity and issues handling certain audio and video files. The Boxee Blog has the full (long) list of tweaks and additions, while CEO Avner Ronen promises the company plans to release screenshots and a list of usability/UI issues still to be addressed next week. Other upgrades before 2010 runs out of time should include the Netflix and VUDU apps, so when the question of "what are you thankful for?" comes up, just say "build #1.0.1.16319," which your Box should find automatically within 24 hours, though the impatient can prompt for an update manually.Boxee Box owners can be thankful for their first firmware update originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 25 Nov 2010 21:28:00 EDT. Teaching your Apple TV to use a 3rd party remote

Usually, if you're trying to get a new remote to work with home electronics, you teach the remote to work with your electronic device. You look up the name and brand of your electronic in the remote's manual, plug in the super secret code, and hope it works. It's especially painful if your universal remote control doesn't have the necessary code for your home electronic.

The Apple TV is smarter than that. You actually teach the Apple TV to use whatever remote control you want to use. It's kind of nice to have a home electronic that's smarter than a remote control. It can even use the remote that came with your television, cable box, or DVD player. Here's how to do it.

Go to the Settings menu, select General, and then Remote. Choose the Learn Remote option. Make sure the remote you're using isn't already controlling something else (like "Television.") On the Apple TV, choose Start. On the Apple TV screen, the Up button will become highlighted. Press the button on the remote control you'd like to use for Up. And then continue down the rest of the controls.

Setting up a new remote to work with the Apple TV really couldn't be much easier.Teaching your Apple TV to use a 3rd party remote originally appeared on TUAW on Wed, 24 Nov 2010 09:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.Source | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Shop Savvy for iPhone packs a punch for shopping season

Just a couple of days ago I took a look at the Amazon Price Check app. It's a great way to compare prices against Amazon and other online retailers. Before you hit the stores this weekend, it's also a good idea to have the free app Shop Savvy tucked away on your iPhone.
It contains an accurate scanner like the Amazon app, but it also includes local prices and a map to get you to your store of choice. Even better, the app puts a little blue dot next to the stores that have your items in stock. The app has been around for a while, but it has been updated to include deals, complete with info about rebates, sales and special promotions. It also includes coupon codes. The app includes reviews, and you can add your own, as well as share the low prices you have found via email, Twitter and Facebook.
I took it on a jaunt to some local stores and it worked very well. The scanner locked in on the bar-code quite quickly, and was accurate. When you simply type in the name of a product, the app suggests what you might be looking for so it saves you a bunch of keystrokes.
The app does make local and online comparisons, and not surprisingly, the online prices are often cheaper, but not always. This is a pretty handy app if you're running around looking for gifts. I've given it a permanent place on my iPhone, and I think you'll find it both handy and money saving. If you've seen our survey of shopping apps, be sure to add this one to your list.

iOS 4.2 CoreMIDI apps begin to arrive on the App Store

When we got word a few weeks ago that Apple was introducing CoreMIDI into iOS 4.2, our minds began to ponder the new possibilities it would present. Since the release of iOS 4.2, however, with all the buzz surrounding the latest iOS software update, we forgot all about CoreMIDI. And that's because we hadn't seen any apps on the App Store taking advantage of it, until now.

Apple has now begun to approve apps for the App Store that take advantage of the CoreMIDI API. Interestingly enough, one of the first apps to take advantage of CoreMIDI isn't a music app at all.
It's Luminair for iPad -- a DMX-compatible lighting console app for your theatrical or concert lighting rig -- and it takes advantage of the CoreMIDI API via Apple's USB Camera Connection Kit for iPad or over WiFi.

Most importantly, this is now achieved without the need for specialized third-party hardware, like the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer.

We're looking forward to seeing what other apps pop up on the App Store that take advantage of this exciting development. If you've noticed anything on the App Store, or if you see anything in the coming days, let us know in the comments below.

For now, check out Luminair using the CoreMIDI API by clicking on the read button.

Woow Digital's The One tablet cooks up Tegra 2 with Gingerbread just in time for Christmas

No, we can't say we've ever heard of Woow Digital before either, but we've just received some very legit-looking imagery of the company's forthcoming tablet, modestly titled The One. Google's impending Android Gingerbread release is promised as the OS, while the internal equipment includes an NVIDIA Tegra 2 core, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of flash storage. Up front you'll find a 10-inch display spanning a 1024 x 600 resolution, while wireless connectivity is taken care of with Bluetooth, WiFi and WCDMA 3G radios built in. Woow tells us it plans to launch The One in Japan before Christmas at a price of ¥42,000 ($504), which will be followed up by availability in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Europe. Well, it had better hope that release schedule doesn't shift, because come CES 2011, we should be up to our ears in Tegra 2 tablets and phones.Gallery: Woow Digital's The One tabletContinue reading Woow Digital's The One tablet cooks up Tegra 2 with Gingerbread just in time for ChristmasWoow Digital's The One tablet cooks up Tegra 2 with Gingerbread just in time for Christmas originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 25 Nov 2010 08:50:00 EDT. Apple?s Black Friday sale teaser posted to website

There are plenty of ways to spend your money on Black Friday, but some people are too lazy to be bothered with trekking out before sunrise and battling mobs of shoppers. Or maybe there are still a few people out there with some self respect. In either case, we have to cherish every opportunity to save some dough this Black Friday that doesn’t involve elbowing 60-year-old women in the jaw. While the words “Apple” and “sale” don’t align as often as most would like, the crew from Cupertino apparently decided to take advantage of the sale craze this year. A teaser is now up on Apple’s site inviting customers to visit the Apple Online Store this Friday for “dozens of

President Obama signs another iPad

At the NATO summit in Lisbon, Portugal, an iPad-toting attendee approached President Obama and asked him to sign his 21st century autograph pad. The President replied, "I've done this once before."

Back in October, President Obama signed an iPad at a rally at the University of Washington. As Dave Caolo noted at the time, this was the first presidential autograph captured with an iPad that we know of.

iPad keyboard has broken shift-drag capitalization under iOS 4.2.1

The iOS 4.2.1 update for my iPad brought many welcome features -- and one unwelcome one. Since upgrading, I have found myself unable to use the handy shift-drag trick to type capitals. Now, I move my finger down to shift, place it on the screen, drag to the letter I want, release it -- and get something random. Rarely, it's the character I was aiming for. More often, it's some other character I dragged my finger over on the way to it. Even more often, it's something nothing at all.
The video shows the problem in action. This is really quite annoying -- I failed to log into a server several times this morning, and it wasn't until I watched the password box like a hawk that I could deduce why. Fix it please, Apple!

TiVo announces iPad app to control TiVo box

If you're like most iPad users, then you probably surf the web and check out IMDB with your iPad while watching anything that might be showing on the television. TiVo knows this, embraces this, and wishes to support this. They want to make the experience between your television and your iPad even closer.

TiVo announced Monday a new, upcoming iPad app that will let you use many features of the TiVo service all on your iPad, without ever interrupting what's happening on your larger television screen.

The TiVo iPad application will allow you to browse TiVo's program guide, schedule recordings, remotely control your TiVo unit, and browse your library of recorded shows. Additionally, the app will search both broadcast TV and premium services like Netflix, let you check out the cast and crew information of any shows you're watching, as well as schedule shows to be recorded while you're on the road.

Upcoming does mean that it's not out yet, but TiVo says we'll be notified in the customer newsletter as soon as the app is available. It will be interesting to get our hands on the TiVo app since it really could open up a lot of powerful features.

More on RIM Shutting Down the Kik Messenger Service

iphone blackberry cell phones

Acer introduces 7-inch and 10.1-inch Android tablets, shipping April 2011

Shocker of shockers, folks -- Acer's getting into the tablet game, too. With the holidays too close for comfort, the outfit's giving everyone pause that was considering that janky Android tablet on sale for Black Friday. All jesting aside, the flagship 10.1-incher looks quite interesting, boasting a dual-core 1GHz processor, an HDMI output and a native 1280x800 (!) screen resolution. You'll also get a 5 megapixel rear camera, an "HD" front-facing camera for video calling and full multitouch support. Hard to say how many clams it'll cost ya, but at least there's an April 2011 ship date to mark down. Moving on, the 7-inch tablet (also unnamed as of now) packs the same screen resolution, a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm CPU and the same Flash 10.1 support -- so far as we can tell, the "Android Tablet OS" Acer speaks of is Froyo, or Android 2.2. That one's also coming in April of next year, and you can bet we'll be scrounging up more details as soon as we can.

Update: PR's live after the break, and here's what's new. The 10.1-incher boasts a 13.3mm thick shell, 1080p output over HDMI, a ten-point multitouch system and an inbuilt Gyroscope for gaming purposes. The 7-inch sibling seems mostly identical save for the screen size, packing a dual core CPU, DLNA technology, WiFi and integrated 3G. Microvision's PicoP-based SHOWWX+ projector: twice as bright, zero percent larger

Still holding out on nabbing a pico projector? We know, we know -- you'll leap when there's 1080p. But if you're kosher with baby steps, Microvision's newest entrant might just fit the bill. The SHOWWX+ is a revamped version of the ouftit's original PicoP-based SHOWWX, and it seems that a full year in the engineering lab has enabled the company to pop out a device that's 50 percent brighter, yet the exact same size. The internal battery can keep the 15 laser lumens shining for two solid hours, and there's also a 5,000:1 native contrast ratio. iDevice users will be elated to know that this guy is a Made for iPod, iPhone and iPad product, enabling it to output Netflix content without any DRM issues (or so we're told). The native resolution still checks in at 848 x 480, and if all that sounds just peachy, you can get one headed your way today for $449. Head on past the break for Netflix and Rage HD demos. Despite leak, latest 'Harry Potter' film has opening weekend record in sights

Despite the first 36 minutes of the film being leaked to the Internet earlier this week, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 has set its sights on the highest box office open of all-time.

For the midnight Thursday showings, the film made $24 million, with total Friday sales totaling $61.2 million, the fifth biggest opening day of all-time.

Twilight: New Moon, owns that record, at $72 million.

That figure is also the highest opening for a Harry Potter movie, surpassing 2009's "Half-Blood Prince."

If the film mimics previous movies in the franchise, sales are expected to dip 9 percent on Saturday (from Friday) and 30 percent on Sunday, which would leave the latest film at $156 million for opening weekend. That figure will put the film within fighting distance of the current biggest opening, 2008's The Dark Knight, at just over $158 million.

Warner Bros. has said it is looking into the leak, not that it really matters anymore: "This constitutes a serious breach of copyright violation and theft of Warner Bros. property. We are vigorously investigating this matter and will prosecute those involved to the full extent of the law."

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is the first part of the final movie in the long standing franchise. Part 2 is set for a July 2011 release.Permalink | Comments

iPhone 4.2 how-to: Setting custom SMS alert tones

One of the less-heralded new features in iOS 4.2.1 for the iPhone is the addition of a slew of new SMS message tones, along with the ability to assign text tones to particular contacts. The expansion of choice is welcome, and I hate to look gift text tones in the mouth, but there are still some frustrations in the mix.
The biggest issue is that as far as we can tell, 3GS owners aren't getting the new ringtones at all; only iPhone 4 users are seeing them. It's not clear yet if this is permanent or temporary.
Even if you have the new tones, what you see is what you get; you still can't add your own custom SMS tones without jailbreaking. For another thing, as Chris Rawson pointed out last week, these new SMS alerts are mostly freakishly long -- who has time to wait for 10 seconds of music whenever they get a text? It is a puzzlement.
Update: Reader Peter Park, a database admin by trade, wrote in to say how much he appreciates the longer alert tones -- when you're depending on an SMS message to wake you up in the middle of the night when a server is offline, you want to make sure you hear it. Point taken!
You may find one of the new SMS tones to your liking; for my money, most of them sound like they might have been recorded between takes on the Looney Tunes scoring stage, although "Anticipate" is a dead ringer for the Stair Dismount music sting. The only one that I feel like I might be able to stick with for a while is "Noir," which is short enough not to drive me bonkers.
Whether you stick with the classic alerts or dip into the new and "improved" ones, you can still have some fun assigning specific tones to particular people -- very handy if you want to make sure that your spouse or your boss always get your attention in a hurry. Read on for the simple steps needed to set this up.

Magellan updates RoadMate with free traffic and iOS 4 support

It was almost exactly a year ago that I reviewed the first version of the Magellan RoadMate app for the iPhone. Over the last several months the price has dropped, and features have been added.
In the latest update of the app, released this week, RoadMate USA now fully supports multitasking and fast application switching. If you are listening to music, it fades it for voice announcements, and voice guidance continues if you switch to another app. There is also an option to pause audio, which is nice if you're listening to an audio book and the voice guidance needs to interrupt.
More value from Magellan: traffic info is now free (with a catch, see below). You won't need an in-app purchase or any kind of subscription. I consider that a big plus if you commute in an urban area. The app also allows you to share your route or points of interest via email or with another Magellan user.
In a test drive, everything functioned very well. The voice guidance is clear, and you can choose a male or female voice, as well as other languages. If you zoom out and are in 3D mode, you can see the terrain, which is a nice feature. In downtown areas of bigger cities, you get 3D renderings of major buildings.

Leaked: OS 6.0.0.358 for the BlackBerry Curve 9300

To go along with that BlackBerry Bold 9700 leak is the same OS for the BlackBerry Curve 9300. OS 6.0.0.358 is available for download, if you are a Curve 3G owner. As usual, back up your data before loading please.

*OS Disclaimer - Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you're comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base - do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). *

Autonomous Audi TTS scales Pikes Peak in 27-minute climb

They said they'd do it, and by golly, it's been done -- a specially-equipped Audi TTS drove the entire 12.42 miles and 156 precarious turns of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb without a driver at the wheel. (Google, eat your heart out.) While the vehicle technically performed the feat about a month ago in September, Audi decided to wait until this last week to proclaim it to the world, following a helicopter accident during filming that sent pilot Jim Dirker to the hospital. Thankfully, he survived to fly another day, and at least some of the footage pulled through as well; you'll find a brief clip after the break of the shiny white Quattro autonomously speeding up that hill.Continue reading Autonomous Audi TTS scales Pikes Peak in 27-minute climbAutonomous Audi TTS scales Pikes Peak in 27-minute climb originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 21 Nov 2010 23:39:00 EDT. Apple abandons plans for integrated iPhone SIM

According to an unconfirmed report in The Telegraph Sunday morning, Apple has abandoned its plans to develop an integrated SIM card for the iPhone. The report, which cites a senior source at a mobile operator, suggests that Apple backed down from its plans in light of pressures from European carriers. Apple was rumored to be developing an integrated SIM card that would be commissionable by multiple operators. This would allow Apple to exclude carriers from the sale process. It would also allow customers to easily transfer their service from one carrier to another without the need to obtain a new SIM card or purchase a new handset. Following purported threats from European carriers that would refuse to subsidize the high

Casemate's iPhone 4 Bounce case protects your noodle from inevitable radiation baking

As the everlasting debate rages on, and brains continue to / not to melt with every passing phone call, Casemate's taking no chances whatsoever. By collaborating with Pong -- a company that makes its ends by "protecting users of cellular telephones from the potentially harmful effects of radiation exposure" -- the Bounce was born. For all intents and purposes, it's a simplistic form-fitting iPhone 4 case (BlackBerry models are en route), available in a foursome of hues and tested to reduce normal cellphone radiation (SAR) by at least 60 percent. Purportedly, the case can redirect your phone's electromagnetic energy away from your head... right into the brain of some lucky chap sitting next to you on the subway. But hey, at least it serves another purpose: solving that blasted iPhone 4 reception issue. Two birds, one $49.99 dent in your credit card. Propaganda vid is just past the break.Continue reading Casemate's iPhone 4 Bounce case protects your noodle from inevitable radiation bakingCasemate's iPhone 4 Bounce case protects your noodle from inevitable radiation baking originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 19 Nov 2010 22:04:00 EDT. Kyocera?s Solar Cycle Station: Eco-Friendly Stand For Charging E-Bikes

Sure, in many cases electric bikes are much more eco-friendly than cars, but even e-bikes need to be charged in some way or the other - most of the time, the power doesn't come from eco-friendly sources. Kyocera, however, yesterday announced [JP] an alternative: the so-called "Solar Cycle Station", which is essentially some kind of a bike stand that allows owners to charge their e-bikes through solar power.

Activision announced Thursday that Call of Duty: Black Ops has set a new five-day entertainment industry record, grossing over $650 million globally. Headrest mount for iPad by ViewSticks

Hitting the road this holiday season with the kids? Already have a back seat mount for your iPhone but not for your iPad? You may want to check out this iPad Headrest Mount from ViewSticks. The mount attaches to the back of the front seat headrests and turns your iPad, iPod touch, or iPhone into an entertainment system for the car. Easily removable to store or move into another car, the iPad Headrest Mount kit consists of 2 metal stands, 4 rubber bands, 2 suction cups, and 1 Storage Bag and is available now for US$19.95. BMW recently announced their own iPad integration that doesn't look any better than this solution -- and I imagine it's a lot more than $20.

Granted, passengers could just hold their tablets or smartphones in their hands, but who wants to do that for the 6 hour trek to Grandma's house? Considering that all I got on long trips with my parents was a coloring book and a healthy dose of "you kids stop fighting and stay on your own sides," I would have loved it if my parents had hooked up iPads for us to pass the time with.

Last month, we told you about BellMobility’splans to charge a $10 premium for access to the highest speeds on its HSPA+ network. This month, it looks like that report is becoming a reality. BGR has obtained a memo that indicates that Bell will launch the Novatel Wireless U547 data stick — capable of 42Mbps speeds — on November 23rd. The memo boasts that the U547 will be able to achieve real-world downlinks ranging from 7Mbps to 14Mbps in select markets; at launch,Torontowill be the only market with 43Mbps HSPA+ coverage. The new data stick will retail for $199.95; the memo did not indicate if there would be subsidized pricing. Like all good things, the new, higher speeds will not come
