Sony earnings call entertains PlayStation Phone, reveals tablets are on the radar

Earnings calls aren't usually that interesting, and that's doubly true when trying to listen via official translators. Still, we couldn't help but give an ear to Sony's fiscals, and sure enough, someone asked about our (still real) PlayStation Phone leak. We're not sure who answered since it's through interpreter, either Executive VP / CFO Masaru Kato or Senior General Manager of Investor Relations Division Gen Tsuchikawa (we're assuming the former).

Citing the aforementioned device, the curious party asked if such a product would come out of Sony or of Sony Ericsson, and no, it wasn't a complete denial. Instead, we're told just how such a device would happen, that a gaming phone would be planned and prototyped under the (recently restructured) Network Services umbrella. We're also told how SCE's move to Sony City headquarters now puts them closer to the planning and engineering group, meaning the company "can better incorporate all these capabilities better... so when the timing is right we can probably announce to you the new product we have." Ericsson is later cited as a resource "on smartphone and for the games devices," although this might be something peculiar with translation. Again, that's far from a confirmation, but they're certainly entertaining the notion in a very, very detailed response.

But that's not all; there's also apparently a tablet brewing in the background, one that would obviously fall somewhere in between PC and Sony Ericsson's efforts. There isn't much else said, but if you're up for psychoanalyzing executive commentary, we've transcribed and placed the full quote after the break.Continue reading Sony earnings call entertains PlayStation Phone, reveals tablets are on the radarSony earnings call entertains PlayStation Phone, reveals tablets are on the radar originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Oct 2010 14:10:00 EDT. Cosmic Discoveries is a great free demo for your iPhone

Every so often I see a free app that is just dying to be used as an iPhone demonstration. The candidate for today is the American Museum of Natural History app called Cosmic Discoveries.
When you open the app, you see an image of Saturn. It's a bit crinkly, so you dive in for a closer look, dragging your fingers apart to trigger a zoom. What you'll find is that the image is composed of many hundreds of pictures that can be expanded to near full screen proportions. The zoom goes almost literally to infinity. Some of the pictures are historical photos of observatories or scientists, while many others are striking images of the planets and deep space objects taken by some of our best observatories, or the Hubble or Spitzer Space Telescopes.
You can explore the images and the attached information for hours. Alas, all things are not perfect. The app doesn't support the iPhone 4 Retina display. Another big foul up is that you're given the opportunity to share any image with someone via email, but when the image arrives, text is plastered across the middle of the image suggesting that the recipient download the app, too. It's hard to believe that the people who want you to enjoy the grandeur of the universe would deface their own images for some cheap promotion, which could have been handled in the text of the email and not in front of the image.
I hope that rather glaring fault gets fixed, but even so, this is a really cool program that you can explore at no cost. You're bound to learn a few things, and the gigantic zoom is just the thing to show off your iPhone. There's no iPad-specific version, and the app requires iOS 2.2.1 or later.

TUAW's Daily App: ChuChu Rocket!

Sega's classic ChuChu Rocket! puzzle title is on the App Store for both iPhone and iPad right now. I've been waiting for this one for a while. I loved the old Dreamcast version, and the remake for the iPhone not only recreates the mouse-redirecting gameplay (you place arrows on a board to guide mice around cats and into their mouseholes), but it adds a few iOS-specific features as well. There are 145 puzzles to play through, and as a special treat, Sega has added a one to four player multiplayer capability via Apple's Game Center; there are achievements to score as well.

The iPhone version is US$4.99, which is less than you'd pay if you found the used Dreamcast version in a store somewhere. The iPad version is $6.99, but it includes a multiplayer mode where up to four players can play on one screen -- it sounds pretty crazy. This one is a classic puzzler that you should definitely check out even if you never played the old game. We're lucky to have it up and running on iOS.TUAW's Daily App: ChuChu Rocket! originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 29 Oct 2010 08:00:00 EST. Acer Liquid Metal gets official in the UK with Android 2.2 and Breeze UI

After seeing quite a few leaks, Acer just made its Liquid Metal handset official. The 3.6-inch slate runs Android 2.2 Froyo atop an 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7230 processor. Inside all that molten metal you'll find 802.11n WiFi, support for 14.4Mbps HSDPA, DLNA/UPnP streaming support, Dolby Surround technology, and an image stabilized 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash capable of recording video at 720p (30fps). Acer's new handset also features a new Breeze UI and SocialJogger app that aggregates Twitter and Facebook feeds. Look for it to land in brown in the UK starting mid November for £299. A silver version should arrive in early December. Still no word on that AT&T compatible jobbie that passed through the FCC. AT&T Launches Three Mobile Payment Services

AT&T has announced new partnerships with companies called Boku, Zong, and BilltoMobile. All three aim to make it easier for AT&T customers to make payments directly from their mobile phone. Each of the three company's respective systems were developed using specific APIs (application programming interfaces) provided by AT&T so that their technology can integrate directly with AT&T's for customer billing. Boku, Zong, and BilltoMobile allow AT&T customers to make online purchases by entering their mobile number and charging purchases directly to their existing AT&T wireless service account. Web sites that affiliate with the three companies will be able to accept payments made by mobile phones that are charged directly to customer accounts. AT&T hasn't spelled out exactly how consumers will use these services.

Is your new Apple TV skipping frames?

Apple's new $99 Apple TV may be getting a lot more fans than its predecessor, but early reports from a number of users are indicating that the streaming video on the device sometimes skips frames.
As reported on 9to5Mac and relayed by several of our readers from personal experience, the issue may not be apparent to everyone, but it can be annoying enough to those who know what to look for that they'd like to use the device for target practice.
An Emmy-nominated editor who sent 9to5 an email about the issue noted that the motion stops for a frame, then it skips the next frame to catch up. The problem is most apparent where there is motion in a scene, and it didn't occur with the same video sources on the old Apple TV.
The issue is receiving a fair number of discussion forum entries on the Apple Support site, so there is hope that a future update to the firmware on the new Apple TV will be forthcoming to resolve the problem.
Have you experienced this issue? We'd like to know. Leave a comment below telling us about your experiences with the new Apple TV.Is your new Apple TV skipping frames? originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 25 Oct 2010 20:00:00 EST. Model suing Apple over pics in iPhone app

A 19-year-old Long Island yoga instructor and model is suing Apple and developer Samba Studios over racy photos of her that are featured in an iPhone app called eXtreme Cam Girls. The app, which has apparently been removed from the App Store, features self-portraits of Rebecca Battino in a scanty swimsuit that she took when she was 16 years old. She's not quite sure how the photos ended up in the app when they were being stored in the iPhoto library on her Mac.

According to the scoop in the New York Post, Battino isn't embarrassed by the photos; she's just upset that she has never been paid for the use of her image in the app. In the copyright infringement lawsuit, Battino is asking for $1 million in damages from Apple and Samba Studios.

Samba Studios has a number of other sexually-oriented apps in the App Store, including eXtreme Sex Positions and Lesbian Kama Sutra Sex Positions.

Google hit with class action suit for alleged privacy violations

Google has been hit with a new class action suit for allegedly violating the privacy of its users by releasing detailed search query data to third parties. The suit alleges that Google’s privacy policy says that it will not share queries with third parties and that it has denounced the sharing of search queries of users in the past.

The suit was filed in San Jose, California by Paloma Gaos from San Francisco. Gaos’ legal counsel is Kassra Nassiri of Nassiri & Jung LLP and Michael Aschenbrener of Edelson McGuire LLC. The suit is seeking monetary damages for Gaos and any other Google user whose search queries were shared with third party companies.
The suit also seeks an injunction to prevent Google from sharing this type of data in the future. “Because of its dominance in the search business, Google, more than any other company, presents a great risk to citizen privacy. As recent events have made clear, the selling and reselling of personal information is a multi-billion dollar business that shows no signs of slowing down,” says Kassra Nassiri, co-lead attorney. “By systematically disclosing user search queries, Google is adding more fuel to the privacy fire than most people realize.”

Japanese Scientists Aiming to Print Scents Using Modified Ink-Jet Printer

People have been able to scratch-and-sniff for as long as anyone can remember at this point, but for some Japanese scientists that’s just not good enough. They want to be able to use a modified ink-jet printer to actually print smells. They’ve already got a working model, and they plan on showing it off this week.

Kenichi Okada is the leading scientist on the project, and he is working with several more scientists out of the Keio University. The team plans on showing off the ink-jet printer in Florence, Italy this week. The goal of the printer is to let people not only print an image that looks great, but can also stimulate the nose. So, if you see someone holding a lemon in an image, you can actually smell that lemon.
Okada and his team worked closely with Canon, who specialize in pictures and print. The result, was a standard ink-jet printer that the companies transformed into an “olfactory display.” The printer can now switch between four aromas. As of now, though, the three main ones are lavender, mint, and lemon. Okada says that the ink-jet printer works the best, because the ink-jets are able to “emit tiny pulses of material to achieve precise control.”
Unfortunately, the printer isn’t capable of syncing smells to an object quite yet, but Okada says that is the next step. So, here in the near future hopefully, we’ll not only be able to look at an image and remember a fond event, but we’ll also be able to smell certain aspects of it.

PSP Go price cut to $200 in the US and Japan

Sony just slashed ¥10k off the price of the PSP Go in Japan (effective starting Tuesday). That brings the price down to ¥16,800 or right around $200 -- a more reasonable price point Sony has been toying with in the US for awhile. A quick search online shows a $199 listing on Amazon and Gamestop while Sony's US PlayStation site still has it listed at $249.99. That'll likely change any minute now.

PSP Go price cut confirmed by Sony Japan

Remember the PSP Go that a lot of us were excited about when it was leaked ahead of E3 last year? The Go turned out to be a steaming pile of fail with consumers and many gamer sellers avoiding the Go like the plague. We reported earlier in the month that a leak was pointing to a price cut for the Go.

That price cut has now been confirmed with an official blog post from Sony Japan noting the cut. The PSP Go will get a price cut in Japan to 16,800 yen with tax included, which works out to about $208 here in the US.
That is very close to the $199 price leak and if you take the tax that is included away that leaked price should be accurate. That new price is about $50 cheaper than the PSP Go was before. I still don’t see a $50 savings making the Go any more appealing to most gamers. The real issue is still the fact that you can’t play any of your old games from your PSP collection on the Go.

Samsung Developing Joint Phone-TV Platform

Samsung has revealed its plans to market a new platform that will be shared across its mobile devices and its television sets. "We have a plan to have a single platform for Samsung TV and phones," Kyungsik Kevin Lee, vice president at Samsung's Visual Display Division, told Reuters in an interview. The platform is still in development, and Lee wasn't able to provide a timeline for its launch. In late 2009, Samsung launched its own smartphone platform, called Bada. Bada devices are only available in Asian and European markets. It is unclear if this new platform would be for feature phones, smartphones, if it would replace Bada or it if it would coincide with Bada.

Bubble Burst - An entertaining game for your BlackBerry

Tafasa is back again with another entertaining game for your BlackBerry. Bubble Burst is a color matching game where you try to score big by popping the largest set of the same color bubbles. The more bubbles in your set, the more points you earn. Bubble Burst has four different modes to choose from: Standard, Shift, Continuous, and Megashift. While each mode has the same basic gameplay, each has a variation to keep things interesting. You also have the option to turn the colored bubbles into white shapes on a black background which is ideal if you are color blind. You can save statistics such as high score, average score and number of games played for each mode.
Bubble Burst has a paid and a free (advertisement supported) version, and supports most all devices. I tried out the free version on my BlackBerry Torch, and while the ad is there at the bottom of the game screen, I really didn't even notice it. I know some of you out there can't stand ads at all, so if you prefer your game without, you can pick up the full version of Bubble Burst on sale for $0.99 in the CrackBerry store.

FaceTime security flaw fixed

Our own Dave Caolo suggested FaceTime's widely publicized security flaw would be easily fixed, and it turns out he was right. Initially, FaceTime allowed users with physical access to a machine to edit a user's information without first having to enter a password. According to Cocoa Touch Apps, Apple's already patched this hole with a server-side workaround. I verified this myself: instead of giving anyone and everyone in front of your Mac access to your Apple-related info, clicking "View Account" in FaceTime now does... precisely nothing. It just kicks you back to the account preferences tab.

It's a somewhat silly workaround, and it's likely a temporary one until Apple releases a FaceTime update. Meanwhile, it's good to see that Apple took this problem seriously enough to issue a quick fix for its still-in-beta software.FaceTime security flaw fixed originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 22 Oct 2010 03:00:00 EST. Boss is the newest theme from AHazDesigns and as you would expect, it is pretty awesome. I was really impressed with the animations on this one; though they are somewhat simple, there is a lot of function packed into them. Two sliding docks on the right hand side of your home screen are accompanied by a slide out today section on the left. The custom meters are a bit larger than most themes offer, so you can tell at a glance where your device stands in regards to battery and signal strength. An easy-to-read font and large bright icons round out the functionality of Boss making this theme one you can feel comfortable using daily.

Flash plugin absence on MacBook Air was deliberate, says Apple

Several of the folks lucky enough to get their hands on new MacBook Air review units noticed something a little strange: the Adobe Flash Player, usually bundled as a browser plugin with new Mac OS X installations, was AWOL. It wasn't clear at first if this was an early-build hiccup or a design decision; although Apple has been dinged in the past for shipping out-of-date versions of Flash Player, it hadn't stopped bundling the plugin. I confirmed today that shipping units and Apple retail store models were also Flash-less.
Now Engadget has an official statement from Apple that confirms the situation: yes, Flash Player is no longer being included, and users can & should download the most up-to-date version from Adobe if and when they need it. Alternatively, they could just grab a browser that bundles it in.
The official statement: "We're happy to continue to support Flash on the Mac, and the best way for users to always have the most up to date and secure version is to download it directly from Adobe."
Easy enough for them to say, not always so easy for the novice Mac owner to do. I expect that some of the MacBook Air-shaped packages under the Christmas tree may be followed on 12/26 by phone calls saying "YouTube is broken! Help!" Then again, another plugin not installed by default: Silverlight.Flash plugin absence on MacBook Air was deliberate, says Apple originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 22 Oct 2010 17:00:00 EST. Report: Twenty percent of peak downstream Internet used for Netflix?

If you're anything like us, you're both smart and incredibly good looking. Also, you're sarcastic. And in addition to all that, you spend much of your downtime enjoying streaming media on your computer, or your Internet-enabled TV, or perhaps even your fancy-pants cellphone. And it looks like, indeed, much of the country is "anything like us" -- at least according to Sandvine, Inc., of Waterloo, Ontario. The network hardware manufacturer has released a report that concludes that over twenty percent of stateside peak time downstream Internet traffic is gobbled up by Netflix streams, with the heaviest use going down in the primetime hours between 8 to 10 pm. We're sure that this is no surprise to Netflix itself, whose CEO recently stated that the company is primarily a streaming company that just happens to mail out DVDs to some customers; but still, the figure is pretty staggering. You can draw your own conclusions, but we're just happy to no longer live in a place where the only thing to watch on a Thursday night is The World According To Jim.Report: Twenty percent of peak downstream Internet used for Netflix? originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 22 Oct 2010 13:27:00 EDT. Steve Jobs chilling with President Obama today

According to Business Insider, President Obama is scheduled to be flying into the San Francisco area this afternoon to attend an event for District Attorney Kamala Harris and to deliver remarks at a later dinner. What isn't on the President's public agenda, according to an anonymous source familiar with the matter, is a one-on-one meeting with the turtlenecked crusader himself, Steve Jobs.

You may think that they'll be talking about several important issues regarding Apple's lead in the technological frontier, but we all know that the President probably just wants to have a little chat about iWeb not being updated.

Windows: The Cadillac Of Operating Systems

It wasn't that long ago, as far as history goes, that the ideal car was a hulk of convenience, a bench-seated, chrome-plated, three-ton luxury missile. This ideal had many aspirants, but perhaps the one who most embodied it was the Cadillac, perhaps even the '59 pictured. That's more of a matter for vintage car enthusiasts, but it occurred to me that this particular car has a lot of things in common with Windows 7.

Bear with me here.

The pace of advancement in technology is such that ideas are often outpaced in just a few years. Formats, applications, and services pass by the wayside, having grown, bloomed, and withered at a speed which some years ago would be considered ludicrous. It's a bit like the fins, wings, grilles, and other flourishes that increasingly decorated cars in the 50s. They sold, they were outdone, they were forgotten as the next version came along. And critically, at the time, the competition was between flourishes, not between cars. Yet at some point, that whole type of car would no longer be relevant. Are you picking up what I'm putting down?

The Epidemic of Update Fever

While I was working as a teacher, I got a job moonlighting at an Apple retail store in a high-class mall in the Boston area. I worked as a Mac Specialist on the sales floor, and the most common question I got was whether the customer should buy now, or wait until the next version came out. Inevitably, that laptop or iPod they bought today would be rendered obsolete by a faster version with more memory and a lower price tag. Apple is pretty good about helping you out if you just bought your new kit the day before the newer version is released, but after about a month, you’re boned. This is the way with technology. There are three things you can count on in life: death, the planned obsolescence of the cool gadget you just bought, and taxes.

What advice did I give? If you need it now, buy it now. If you can wait, then wait until you need it. If you’re losing money every day because you can’t complete your business projects without a working computer, it is not worth waiting for the next big thing. Rarely is the next big thing a significant leap forward. For all the Intel marketing claims that their newest processors are the greatest things since USB, it’s not really true. The difference will be hardly noticeable.
There was another bit of advice I always gave customers: make sure you’re happy with the product you’re buying now. If it does things you like, it will still do the same things in three years. New features might come along that you wish you had, but if you like burning DVDs, or carrying around 4 months worth of music in your pocket, at least you’re guaranteed that your new purchase will do those things until the day it dies. You might wish for a Blu-Ray burner or an iPod that can hold 10 months worth of music, but that is the way of the silicon. Personally, I try to spend as much as I can afford to buy the best piece of tech available. I could live with a lousy car, cheap furniture, even a smaller house. But I work every day on my computer, and if I’m not happy going to work, I won’t be as productive. I think the only other product like this in my life is my mattress. A good mattress is important for my happiness.
When I read that a Gizmodo editor was refusing to review the Nokia N8 because its operating system was slowly becoming obsolete, I had to laugh. Not out of humor, but out of embarrassment for their other editors. That had to be one of the most boneheaded moves in tech journalism I’ve seen since… well, since they decided to pay for a stolen iPhone prototype.
I’m not going to dive into the specifics. This column isn’t about phone operating systems, it’s about the idea that our gadgets need to improve after we’ve bought them. Now, I’m not arguing that gadgets shouldn’t improve. It would be awesome if we knew every gadget would get better over time. Thanks to a great system update, my two-year-old MacBook Air runs better today than the day I bought it. But the next system update might overwhelm the machine, making it obsolete. My iPod touch is much better today than when I bought it, though many other gadgets are exactly the same. I don’t expect significant improvements for my cameras, for instance, nor for my television. Even my TiVo hasn’t improved in the last few years, though a TiVo is practically a computer at heart, so it could easily be updated.
There are good reasons why Gizmodo might skip a review of this phone. First, it costs hundreds of dollars because it isn’t subsidized by a carrier. Of course, you don’t have to sign a contract, but unfortunately most Americans don’t buy into this logic, and would rather take a $300 price cut up front to sign away two years of their lives. Unlocked phones have proven very unpopular in the U.S., so the low traffic the phone review generates might not justify the resources required to review it. What’s strange is that Gizmodo never mentions this issue as a reason to skip the phone.
Also, other sites have spent time with the device, and it scored poorly in other reviews. In fact, the non-review’s author even cites another Web site’s review as an excuse for why he skipped it. This is the laziest form of journalism imaginable. If an editor who worked for me decided not to review a product because other sites said it was horrible, he’d be looking for a new job the same day. First of all, I don’t read other reviews before I write my own opinion about a product. I want my own unique perspective to come through untainted. Second, some of my favorite reviews have been ones in which I disagree with the general consensus. When I can offer a different take, I know that I’m doing a service to my readers. At best, I might be right where others are wrong. At worst, I’m simply offering a different opinion, and a range of intelligent opinions makes tech journalism a better place.
The reason you review a device that might already be obsolete is because the average consumer shouldn’t have to think two years into the future when they make a purchase. When I buy a laptop, I’m almost guaranteed that it will be updated within its lifespan, but that’s not why I buy it. I buy it because I need it now, and I need the features it offers. If those features work well, I’ll be happy with them. If they don’t, I won’t buy it.
Indeed, a device that has reached the end of its lifespan is the exact device I need to review, because it’s more important than ever that the device work properly and meet the buyer’s expectations. But, as I’ve said recently here on SlashGear, I review a product with a real buyer in mind, someone who is about to spend some money. I suspect that Gizmodo’s editor imagines his readers to be enthusiasts, of course, but not really interested in buying. That’s fine by me, because his readers are eventually going to need to make an informed buying decision, and those readers will know just which reviews to read, and which reviews to skip because they are obsolete.

?Shiny App Syndrome?: When Open Government Meets Closed Platforms

It’s good for governments to find more ways to connect with their citizens, including the web. As the web goes mobile, open government should too. But governments shouldn’t develop apps for some mobile platforms and not others.

MacBook Air software update addresses responsiveness and graphics issues

A MacBook Air update already? Yes, we've had some tips about intermittent MacBook Air issues, and it seems Apple's next-generation super-thin wedge-Macs are already sporting a shiny new software update that addresses "an issue where a MacBook Air (Late 2010) computer may become unresponsive while playing back movie trailers in iMovie" and a bug where the Mac becomes unresponsive after waking from sleep when connected to an external display. Oh, the the requisite "general graphics performance updates," whatever that means.

Fire up software update or check here for the manual download. The update is wafer thin like the new Air itself!

Hulu Plus dropping to $4.95 per month? That's what she said.

It's only rumor for now, but Peter Kafka over at All Things D has sources telling him that the ABC/NBC/FOX-owned Hulu Plus video site is looking to cut its $9.95 per month subscription fee in halfish to $4.95, perhaps in a bid to increase subscriber count. If so that would drop it well below the $8.95 per month fee paid by Netflix subscribers. A price drop certainly wouldn't surprise us knowing that content owners are still experimenting with pricing in the brave new world we call the internet.Hulu Plus dropping to $4.95 per month? Dell marketing makeover simplifies brands, kills off Adamo altogether

We knew something was going on with Dell's branding with the resurrection of the XPS laptop line, and this morning we caught up with a few of the company's executives to learn all about the entire restructuring. As you can see above, there will now be three core brands -- Inspiron, XPS and Alienware -- all focusing on different "performance seekers." However, you'll notice that Adamo is nowhere to be found on that flow chart. Turns out, the sneaky disappearance of the Adamo XPS from Dell's site hasn't exactly been a coincidence -- it's completely killing off the premium brand and has actually tamped down volumes of the super thin machines. Now, that doesn't mean systems like the original Adamo and the Adamo XPS won't exist ever again as Dell VP Ed Boyd tells us similar products will be coming to the XPS line early next year. Simplifying the brands sure does make a lot of sense to us -- all the Adamo XPS, Studio XPS, Studio laptops have seriously confused us over the last couple of years -- but it's all part of a larger marketing campaign that will attempt to move Dell away from being a low cost brand and instead portray the company as providing choice -- a campaign Dell CMO Paul-Henri Ferrand told Reuters will ultimately cost hundreds of millions of dollars. We look forward to seeing what you've got Dell, but all we know is that we're finally going to say the following words with affirmation: "rest in peace, Adamo."Dell marketing makeover simplifies brands, kills off Adamo altogether originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 21 Oct 2010 15:06:00 EDT. Samsung Galaxy Player, Better Than iPod Touch?

Samsung’s Galaxy Player is a pretty sweet-looking pocket computer, and is the first real competition we have seen for the iPod Touch, a product that has sat in its own market niche since it was launched. The Galaxy Player runs Android 2.1 and packs in enough features to shame Apple’s media-player. Here’s the commercial:
