Two U.S. senators have asked the Federal Communications Commission to take a long, hard look at the GPS community's concerns over the potential of interference from Lightsquared's forthcoming Long Term Evolution network. A GPS industry association has already voiced concerns that Lightsquared's planned network, which will be using L-Band spectrum, poses a threat to the nation's GPS satellites and system. Senators Pat Roberts of Kansas and Ben Nelson of Nebraska wrote the FCC "must be involved and require LightSquared to objectively demonstrate non-interference as a condition prior to any operation of its proposed service. Anything less is an unacceptable risk to public safety." Lightsquared plans to offer wholesale LTE to other providers, and it has already inked deals with Cricket and Best Buy. Lightsquared said it believes it will be able to prove that its network won't interfere with GPS systems.
