FCC Fridays: June 29, 2012
We here at Engadget tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol' Federal Communications Commission's site. Since we couldn't possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there individually, we've gathered up an exhaustive listing of every phone and / or tablet getting the stamp of approval over the last week. Enjoy!Continue reading FCC Fridays: June 29, 2012FCC Fridays: June 29, 2012 originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Jun 2012 19:00:00 EDT. National Weather Service to send alerts to smartphones
A new Wireless Emergency Alerts system from the National Weather Service is on the way for American smartphone owners, but don't expect to get alerts about impending tornadoes or blizzards on your iPhone immediately.
Starting today, the Wireless Emergency Alerts system will begin alerting people in areas near potentially dangerous weather situations by making a special sound and vibrating. You won't have to sign up or pay for the service, which is part of a larger alert network launched by the Federal Emergency Management Agency earlier this year.
Carriers and governments will issue alerts by sending them out from every cell tower in an affected area, so the alerts are not on your home location. The alerts will cover ice and dust storms, blizzards, extreme winds, flash floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, typhoons, and tsunamis. Severe thunderstorm alerts won't be included, and only warnings -- not watches -- are to be sent out.
But iPhone owners shouldn't get too excited about the system, which is currently offered nationwide on Sprint, Verizon, and T-Mobile networks and a handful of cities on the AT&T network. Weather Service spokeswoman Susan Buchanan said that iPhones are supposed to join the system this fall, but it's not known if that will only be new iPhones or if all iPhones will be capable via a software update.National Weather Service to send alerts to smartphones originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 11:30:00 EST. Further details about the OLED screen technology we may well see with BlackBerry 10
We've had a busy week with BlackBerry 10 leaks coming in thick and fast. Today N4BB brings us another, this time with more rumored details about the screen technology Research in Motion is planning to use in the next batch of smartphones released. Clearly, none of this has been confirmed by RIM, so please remember that until the facts are the facts, things are liable to change. According to N4BB; the reasons behind the decision to go with OLED are a lot to do with power consumption. The darker the screen, the less drain the screen has on the battery; so using pure black will optimize power. Again, themes have been mentioned. Having the option of a dark theme will be a warm welcome to many if it means greater battery length. The leaked document compares screens to a flashlight. Of course, the brighter the light you are emitting on your flashlight, the greater the strain on your battery. The same theory applies to phone screens. Clearly the above makes a lot of sense; in particular with regards to a full touch screen device where we know battery drain can be a real issue. This has been proven in many Android devices, although things seem to have settled down a bit now. Battery life on a BlackBerry has traditionally been great so it is encouraging that RIM is still striving to maintain that high standard. If these OLED ?rumors' are true and battery life is utilized to the max I for one will be a happy customer. Let's see what further leaks we get prior to the official launch. I suspect there will be many. What do you think? Let us know in the comments! Source: N4BB CrackBerry.com's feed sponsored by ShopCrackBerry.com. Recon goggles gain Facebook integration and augmented reality at Google I/O (hands-on video)
Remember that Android SDK Recon Instruments finally unveiled for its heads-up display goggles? Well the company was showing off the fruits of its labor here at Google I/O 2012 with two demos -- specifically two-way Facebook integration and augmented reality using a Contour camera. In the first demo, the goggles are paired over Bluetooth with an app running on an Android phone. Each time you jump while snowboarding or skying, the accelerometer data from the goggles is sent to the handset which posts a graphic to Facebook showing the distance, height and duration of your flight. Any comments made to the post are then immediately relayed back to the heads-up display. The second demo uses a Contour camera attached to the goggles and paired via Bluetooth. As you look around, the output from the camera appears on the heads-up display augmented with labels showing the location and distance of the nearby train stations based on the compass and GPS data from the goggles. Pretty cool, eh? Check out the gallery below and hit the break for our two hands-on videos.Gallery: Recon Instruments at Google I/O 2012Continue reading Recon goggles gain Facebook integration and augmented reality at Google I/O (hands-on video)Recon goggles gain Facebook integration and augmented reality at Google I/O (hands-on video) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Jun 2012 16:56:00 EDT. ThisLife rolls out iOS app, Mac uploader for family photo service (Updated)
Update: Here's the link that'll let you skip the queue.
The cloud-based family photo manager ThisLife has been percolating in development for a couple of years, but with a new $2.75m round of investment and a fresh look, the service is almost ready for prime time. As part of the beta phase, ThisLife is offering both a Mac uploader tool for photos and an updated iOS app to help you organize and display your images or videos.
ThisLife will happily ingest photos and movie clips from a slew of online sources (Facebook, Instagram, Flickr, Kodak, Smugmug, Shutterfly, Picasa or Twitter), in addition to direct uploading with the desktop tool or simply emailing your photos to the service. The desktop uploader can optionally grab photos directly from iPhoto -- either all at once or individually, your choice -- or import them from SD cards as they're mounted on your Mac.
Once the photos are loaded to ThisLife, the magic begins. The service keeps a Library of all your images, and you flag your favorites to be called out as Moments; the Moments are what make up your Timeline, the virtual scrapbook of your family. If you're trying to track kid photos over several years without getting bogged down in fifteen near-identical snapshots of the messy spaghetti incident, this is a big help.
ThisLife also includes impressive face recognition, which will be familiar to anyone who's used the current iPhoto app; you knock out the faces that don't match, and ThisLife automatically tags recognized images with the person's name. Photos that are tagged on Facebook match up with ThisLife faces instantly, no manual tagging needed.
The web app and the iOS app are both a pleasure to look at, with an uncluttered design and responsive viewing; the web app even lets you choose between Flash and HTML5 versions. Sharing options include giving a spouse or grandparent co-curator access to a complete set of images ("sharing your Life," and the service supports multiple Life collections); individual Moments can be shared by email or social networks. A more comprehensive Moment sharing model with persistent access is coming soon.
ThisLife may not be a one-to-one replacement for MobileMe Galleries -- and with less than three days left to go before MobileMe sunsets, it's a little late to be looking for that at this juncture -- but it's got a solid foundation and an interesting approach to the challenge of managing family photos. The company was founded by a husband & wife team who simply wanted to organize their images, and the product remains focused on the specific issues of photos and family.
Invite-only registration for ThisLife is ongoing, so you can sign up at the site (or check back here later today for a TUAW-only invite link that lets you jump the queue). The service is free for up to 1,000 photos or an hour of video clips; after that, plans start at $7.99/month ($79.99 a year) for 20,000 photos.
Note: Commenter Jayne is concerned about the "entire iPhoto library import" -- please note that is optional, not mandatory.ThisLife rolls out iOS app, Mac uploader for family photo service (Updated) originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 08:30:00 EST. Virgin Mobile to carry iPhone from today, Sir Richard does his best Fonz impression
Virgin Mobile is offering the iPhone to its prepaid customers as of today. The Sprint-owned subsidiary is using the event to kickstart a new retail strategy that will see the company open branded retail stores in Chicago -- with a nationwide rollout dependent upon its success. Since all carriers have to make a minimum commitment to Apple in order to receive the handset, it's interesting to see that Virgin's allocation forms part of Sprint's $15.5 billion gamble on the handset that's still yet to pay off. The handset will set users back $650 for a 16GB iPhone 4S, while plans begin at $30 for 300 voice minutes, unlimited messages and data, but only if they commit to automatic monthly payments.Continue reading Virgin Mobile to carry iPhone from today, Sir Richard does his best Fonz impressionVirgin Mobile to carry iPhone from today, Sir Richard does his best Fonz impression originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Jun 2012 07:39:00 EDT. Atari sets Greatest Hits free for 40th anniversary
We first tweeted this note late last night, but after waking up this morning and finding out it wasn't a dream, we figured we'd share it with all of you here. Atari celebrated its 40th anniversary yesterday, marking a nice milestone in one of the longest histories in video gaming. And to celebrate, the company has put all -- that's right, all -- of the games in its Atari's Greatest Hits collection for iOS on sale for completely free.
That's right. There are currently 40 years of Atari games available for free download in their official forms on your iPhone or iPad right now. The catch is that you've got to download them today to get them for free, so go over to the App Store, grab the app, and then start downloading inside the app. Today only, there won't be any in-app purchases for your downloads.
After today, any apps you haven't downloaded will go back to in-app purchases. As Atari warns you, if you ever remove or reinstall the app, you'll need to buy all of the games again -- apparently that's just how the system works. But for right now, if you get your downloading fingers moving, you can pick up 40 years of Atari classics for exactly zero dollars.Atari sets Greatest Hits free for 40th anniversary originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 17:00:00 EST. Epic's most profitable game is Infinity Blade for iOS
And here's why we're going to continue seeing AAA games makers getting involved in Apple's iOS platform: Epic Games reports that Infinity Blade, which has earned over $30 million in the past 18 months, is by far the company's most profitable title, "in terms of man-years invested versus revenue." Epic has some much bigger titles than the iOS (and Android) hack-and-slash game, including the uber popular console hit series Gears of War. But those games take much longer to produce, so in terms of time invested versus money gained, Infinity Blade is a much more profitable title.
Now, that doesn't mean that every AAA studio out there can immediately switch from making console hits to freemium iOS titles -- not only is Infinity Blade a high quality game, but it benefits from Epic's reputation and ownership of the Unreal Engine, as well as unprecedented promotional support from Apple. But it's clear that there's a huge market in iOS, especially for AAA game developers with the experience and knowhow to make great games.Epic's most profitable game is Infinity Blade for iOS originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Wed, 27 Jun 2012 19:00:00 EST. Google Drive client comes to Chrome OS and iOS, available today
Windows, Mac and Android users are no longer alone in their access to Google Drive's online repository. Now iOS and Chrome OS users can install a client and pull down their data and docs (though, the promised Linux client was nowhere to be seen at IO). The iOS app has all the features that make Drive drive great on Android, including OCR and picture recognition. As part of the demo, Clay Bavor, Director of Product Management for Google Apps, showed off the apps ability to decipher and index text from receipts he had taken a picture of. Perhaps more impressive though, was his ability to simply type "pyramids" and have his vacation snapshots pop up. There was no metadata attached to the images identifying them as the pyramids in Egypt, Google was able to recognize the landmarks by analyzing the photos. Obviously, Drive and seamless integration with it is key to Chrome OS's success. Now the browser-based OS finally has a native Drive client allowing you to quickly sync and access your data on the lightweight Linux machines. The ability to sync files with Chrome OS is great, but more importantly, an update to the web service has now made offline editing available -- perhaps the most requested feature. Now with offline access ironed out and all the major desktop and mobile OSes under it's belt Drive may actually be ready to challenge peripheral competitors like Dropbox. Apple reportedly planning major iTunes overhaul, better iCloud integration and sharing
While Google is beefing up its ecosystem, Apple is also planning some big changes to its iTunes platform according to Bloomberg. Sources inside the company claim, by the end of the year iTunes will undergo a major transformation seemingly designed to counter recent moves by Google. Key to the plans is iCloud. Cupertino's cloud storage solution will be much more tightly integrated, allowing easier access to and management of media collections across devices. Another part of the online offerings will be content discovery. As Netflix has already discovered, and Google is trying to master, making accurate suggestions for new music and films is key to keeping customers coming back to a media market. Deeper social network integration is also part of finding and sharing new music. Apple is supposedly in negotiations with the record labels to allow users to send songs to friends for free -- a feature both Spotify and Google Music already support. Atari: celebrating 40 years on the dots
Forty years. That's a long time in the tech industry and Atari knows it. Today it celebrates four decades in the game, and quite the tale it is. Google announces Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
Google showed off some killer new features for its Android operating system at Google I/O on Wednesday with its rollout of Android 4.1 (“Jellybean”). If Apple made a washing machine
During the last quarterly earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook helped out comedians and pundits around the world by talking about a mythical "Toaster-Fridge." Now humor site Slacktory has imagined what the world would be like with the AppleClean washing machine.

YouTube for PS Vita now ready, will help you watch more kitties than Killzone
Sony promised us a YouTube app for the PlayStation Vita this month, and although it's just sliding under the wire, that app is here. The viewer as it hits the console will play videos over 3G and WiFi as well as in HD quality, if you've got the bandwidth to burn. Most of the basics for favorites and searches are covered, including a small player that will let you hop between clips. There's no mention of subscriptions for those perpetually addicted to Maru or Ray William Johnson, however. That quirk aside, the free app is due to swing by the PlayStation Store any moment now, so fire up your Vita and get ready to watch game strategy videos distracting pet clips on that OLED-packing handheld.YouTube for PS Vita now ready, will help you watch more kitties than Killzone originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 26 Jun 2012 16:58:00 EDT. Nintendo 3DS XL caught on video, gets manhandled abroad
Nintendo's new 3DS XL was just revealed last week, but we didn't have to wait long for the plus-sized handheld to get put through its paces. Puissance Nintendo got its game on with Nintendo's newest, and if Google's translation is to be believed, the added screen real-estate is, naturally, a welcome addition, and the panel is plenty bright with excellent viewing angles. Also, any negative effects from the bigger pixels present in the display -- it's the same resolution as its baby brother -- have apparently been ameliorated by an anti-aliasing filter of some sort. As for folks concerned about gripping the 3DS XL, fear not, as ergonomics are reportedly spot on, with an even weight distribution that feels no heavier than a standard 3DS. Still not ready to rush out and grab one this August? Head on past the break to see the XL in action, and pop on over to the source link to see if the full French spill will persuade you.Continue reading Nintendo 3DS XL caught on video, gets manhandled abroadNintendo 3DS XL caught on video, gets manhandled abroad originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 26 Jun 2012 20:38:00 EDT. Drobo Drops Out Another Two DAS Enclosures, The Mini And The 5D
Drobo has just released two new drives, the svelte Dobo Mini and the beefier 5D. The Mini is a four-disk enclosure that takes 2.5? laptop drives and it can automatically set up and and format them for maximum capacity or full redundancy.
The Mini is much thinner than the other members of the Drobo family and supports Thunderbolt as well as USB 3.0. You can also add flash storage as a sort of buffer between the slower drives and the high speed connectors. This improves read write speeds and efficiency. It holds up to 3TB of data.

Apple removes claim of virus immunity
As small as the threat may be, Mac users can no longer claim immunity from attack by malicious software online. Many Mac users are starting to recognize this new reality and now Apple does, too. As noted in a recent PC World article, Apple has quietly removed the claim "It doesn't get PC viruses" from its OS X website and replaced it with the phrase "It's built to be safe." Also changed is the paragraph header "Safeguard your data. By Doing Nothing," which now says "Safety. Built right in."
It's a subtle difference, but it's enough to show that Apple recognizes the importance of Mac security. Mac OS X is growing as a desktop platform and increasingly will be the target of malicious attacks. Recently, the Flashback botnet infected over 670,000 computers worldwide, most of which were running Mac OS X. This botnet exploited a hole in Java that was patched by Apple in a subsequent update to OS X.Apple removes claim of virus immunity originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Tue, 26 Jun 2012 08:00:00 EST. gdgt runs the numbers on Retina display sizes
Apple fans have been oohing and ahhing since the MacBook Pro with Retina display was announced a few weeks ago. Let's face it, the display looks incredible! With Retina displays starting to make inroads into the world of Mac, gdgt's Ryan Block decided to take a look at what screen resolutions would be required on the rest of the Mac line to achieve a pixel density similar to that on the new MacBook Pro.
What Block did was to figure out the current pixel density and size of Mac displays, then figure out what it would take to approach the 220 pixel per inch (PPI) display on the Retina display MacBook Pro. It's not just a doubling of pixel density; Block noted that the 11" MacBook Air already has a 135 PPI display that wouldn't need to be doubled to achieve Retina quality.
Block's results are fascinating:
13" MacBook Air
Current Resolution: 1440 x 900, Estimated Retina Resolution: 2560 x 1600
13" MacBook Pro
Current Resolution: 1280 x 600, Estimated Retina Resolution: 2560 x 1600
11" MacBook Air
Current Resolution: 1366 x 768, Estimated Retina Resolution: 2200-2300 x 1200-1300
27" iMac and Thunderbolt Display
Current Resolution: 2560 x 1440, Estimated Retina Resolution: 5120 x 2880
21.5" iMac
Current Resolution: 1920 x 1080, Estimated Retina Resolution: 3840 x 2160
(Block thinks the 21.5" Retina iMac would get a bump above that resolution)
Of course, this is all pure conjecture. What do you think? Will Apple introduce Retina displays across the Mac product line in the foreseeable future? Let us know in the comments.gdgt runs the numbers on Retina display sizes originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Mon, 25 Jun 2012 10:30:00 EST. iPhone 5 prototypes reportedly supporting NFC
Some digging around the hardware code dump of iPhone 5 prototypes has revealed that there's an NFC antenna somewhere inside. The near field communications controllers are directly connected to the power management unit according to the code, but as always, there's no saying if the feature will make it to a final release this fall.

iRobot Roomba 790 with Wireless Command Center hands-on (video)
What to get the homeowner who has everything? Perhaps a robotic vacuum styled in the fashion of an RC toy will fit the bill. Here at a gdgt event in New York City we happened upon iRobot's Roomba 790, which comes with a touchscreen remote for manually controlling where the bot goes. The controller -- make that the "Wireless Command Center" -- has an interface matching the one on the 790 itself, so there's no second set of menus to master here. In addition to deciding where it moves, you can also schedule daily cleanings or tap a "Clean" button to push the robot into action.Though this isn't the first time iRobot's dabbled in remote-controlled vacuum cleaners, previous models tended to rely on infrared sensors, meaning you could only control the Roomba if it was in your line of sight. This guy, though, uses a proprietary technology that allows you to program that 4pm scrubbing from up to 25 meters away. As for battery life, it runs on four AA cells, and is rated for three to six months of runtime, depending on how compulsively you plan on cleaning. Interestingly, despite the change in wireless standards, the 790 is compatible with older 700-series Roombas, though it's not as is the controller would be sold separately. If you happen to be the kind of fabulously wealthy family who can afford (and has a need) for multiple Roomba cleaners, you can only pair the remote with one robot at a time anyway. Don't have the budget for a $700 robotic vacuum kit? We've got hands-on photos below and a demo video after the break. First BlackBerry 10 Device to Lack a Physical Keyboard
Research In Motion revealed today that the first smartphone to ship with its forthcoming BlackBerry 10 platform will not include a physical keyboard. Instead, the device will offer only a software-based keyboard. It is due to arrive by the end of the year, and a RIM spokesperson said that BlackBerry 10 devices with keyboards will launch "in the future." At a developer event RIM held in May, the company showed off a new software keyboard for its smartphones that uses new predictive software for correcting typing errors. This keyboard is expected to be part of the BlackBerry 10 platform.
Microsoft to phase out Office 2010 Starter
It appears that Microsoft is ready to discontinue their free Office 2010 Starter edition.Over the past few years, Microsoft has made an ad-supported version of their popular suite available to anyone with a new Windows 7 computer. The Starter edition comes with Word and Excel and lacks features of the fully paid version, but nonetheless the software was popular.Into the future, starting with the release of Windows 8, new buyers will get links to trial versions of full Office, instead of a pre-loaded Starter like in the past.Despite being the clear leader in the market, Microsoft has seen increasing competition in past few years. OpenOffice and LibreOffice offer full office suites, for free, and Google Docs is preparing to gain offline capabilities, making it another free alternative.Microsoft Office ranges from $99 to $499 depending on the type of package.Permalink | Comments

Daily iPad App: Band Together represents some excellent student work
I first got to meet Dave Taylor last week at WWDC -- he's one of the original members of id software, and is responsible in part for classic games like Quake, Doom, and Wolfenstein 3D. These days, he's still working as a game producer, but has also taken on the role of teacher.
Last night, I visited Jim Henson Studios here in Los Angeles, and saw Dave speak for a few minutes about a class he taught last year in San Francisco, in which he tasked students with producing a game a week, in order to get used to the often rapid development cycle in game production today. You can see all of their work over on the school's website -- some of those games are nuts, and some of them are really beautiful, but they all show just how hard these students worked to learn the art and craft of game design and production.
After the class finished last year, Dave says he decided to use his job as game producer to try and publish an actual game with a few of the students, and while they had hoped to be done with the game last summer, it's just this week finally arrived on the App Store. Band Together is the title of the app, and it's sort of a 2D, real-time strategy title, in the same vein as Lemmings. By swiping across the screen, you control a set of little creatures, trying to navigate them past various deadly obstacles.
The excellent art has been coordinated by a Blizzard veteran that Taylor connected up with the students, and the gameplay is simultaneously meditative and frenetic, as you drag the little Bandies around the screen with your finger. Whether or not you succeed, you're automatically skipped to the next level of the game, so even casual players can just delight in playing around (while more hardcore players will want to go back and clean up every level perfectly). Band Together offers some really well-made, original fun -- it's a perfect start for these students, and it's yet another example that the iOS platform can be home to some really amazing indie and student work.
Band Together is out now for the iPad. The full game, published by Backflip Studios (and kudos to them for supporting student work like this), is $4.99.Daily iPad App: Band Together represents some excellent student work originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Thu, 21 Jun 2012 18:20:00 EST.

Chinese astronauts go hands-on, manually dock with orbiting module
Looks like China continues to add to its space cred after recently joining the rarefied ranks of countries that have successfully docked craft in the final frontier. Fresh off from the recent joining of the Shenzhou 9 capsule with the Tiangong 1 orbiting module, China's three astronauts have now replicated the feat manually, according to the Washington Post . For the uninitiated, the first docking was done via remote control from the ground. The mission has had plenty of firsts for China so far, including the country's first female astronaut. It also serves as a precursor to establishing China's first permanent space station, a 60-ton facility that's about a sixth of the size of the International Space Station but is slightly bigger than NASA's old Skylab. 'Cause sometimes, you just gotta have your own space in space, you know? Next iPhone may feature new 19-pin dock connector
A new dock connector design for Apple products has been bandied about for quite some time, but it's now beginning to look like the rumors are true. John Biggs at TUAW's sister site TechCrunch reports that the blog has verified that Apple will add a 19-pin connector to the next iPhone, replacing the venerable 30-pin connector that has been around since the third-generation iPod.
The new port has been glimpsed in both blog posts and a video, and is apparently similar in size to the MacBook Pro / MacBook Air Thunderbolt ports. However, Biggs was told by three manufacturers that the pin-out for the new port is definitely different from Thunderbolt. These manufacturers all agreed that the new 19-pin dock port is being developed by Apple.
What does that mean for accessory manufacturers? They'll be anxiously awaiting official word from Apple about the new dock connector, and will most likely have to develop adapters that connect the new iPhone to old 30-pin accessories.
The new design is a nod to space savings in Apple devices, since the new connector is much more compact than the existing design. Other internal space savings are expected to come from the adoption of the newly-approved 4FF (Fourth Form Factor) "nano-SIM," an Apple design that was recently approved by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).Next iPhone may feature new 19-pin dock connector originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Fri, 22 Jun 2012 16:00:00 EST. Nintendo Debuts 3DS XL With 90% Larger Displays: Available August 19 For $199
Despite the fact that Nintendo's 3DS is an excellent hand-held console, 3DS sales haven't been on par with what the company was expecting.
But perhaps Nintendo's brand new Nintendo 3DS XL will turn the tides. It's very similar to a regular 3DS, but with 90 percent larger screens. According to Nintendo's official release, it comes with a 4GB SD card, better battery life, and both Blue and Red color flavors. Access to the Nintendo eShop is obviously available, but users will also be able to pick up Super Mario Bros. 2 on launch day, August 19.

Google's Turing doodle celebrates his genius, reminds us how dumb we are (video)
This week sees many corners of the globe celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alan Turing. A man whose contribution to the worlds of tech and gadgets is immeasurable -- a sentiment not lost on Google. Today, geeks and norms worldwide will be waking up to possibly the most complex doodle to date. Can you set the machine and spell out "Google"? If you can, you'll be sent off to lots more information about the man himself. This isn't the only thing Mountain View's done to keep his legacy alive, having previously helped Bletchley Park raise funds to purchase (and display) Turing's papers, and more recently helping curators at London's Science Museum with its Codebreaker - Alan Turing's Life and Legacy exhibition. If you haven't already, head to Google.com and pop your logic hat on, and if you get stuck, head past the break for a helpful video.Continue reading Google's Turing doodle celebrates his genius, reminds us how dumb we are (video)Google's Turing doodle celebrates his genius, reminds us how dumb we are (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 23 Jun 2012 10:27:00 EDT. Google Maps Coordinate: keep tabs on your team, dish the work out fairly (video)
If you're a mobile / field worker, and are tired of getting hauled across town to jobs, when there are others nearer by, you might want to point your senior in the direction of Google Maps Coordinate. Sounding like a blend of Latitude, Maps and Google + (Circles,) it's a web tool and mobile app that should help central operations organize their teams out in the field. Of course there's the usual location sharing, plus options for recording and collecting (user defined) data, allocating staff to teams or groups, job and task allocation plus history for analytics. Google says any business can sign up (currently $15 per employee,) plus there's an API if the stock options don't fit your custom needs. Either way, you can kiss goodbye to those two-hour secret lunchtime golf sessions.Continue reading Google Maps Coordinate: keep tabs on your team, dish the work out fairly (video)Google Maps Coordinate: keep tabs on your team, dish the work out fairly (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 22 Jun 2012 11:56:00 EDT. Feral Interactive bringing two Sega Sonic games to Mac
I can't say that I'm a huge fan of Feral Interactive: They're a company that specializes in porting games from other platforms over to the Mac, and I'm more interested in natively developed and published Mac games. But I have to respect them nevertheless: Feral picked up an Apple Design Award for their port of Deus Ex: Human Revolution at WWDC last week, so they must be doing something right.
And now Sega has chosen them to bring Sonic the Hedgehog to the Mac platform for the first time. Feral is going to be bringing Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing and SEGA Superstars Tennis to the Mac App Store, with both games arriving later on this summer. In addition to porting the games, they'll also be Game Center-enabled, because Game Center will be used in Apple's next OS X update, Mountain Lion.
It's also interesting that Sega has already released one of these games, All-Stars Racing, on the App Store. So Feral can probably thank the iOS platform for Sega's interest in Mac gaming. I wouldn't be surprised if it's because of Sega's success on iOS that the company is dipping its toe into the Mac App Store as well.Feral Interactive bringing two Sega Sonic games to Mac originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Wed, 20 Jun 2012 19:00:00 EST. Daily iPhone App: Avocado aims to connect couples on the go
In any marriage or romantic partnership, there are moments of agreement, negotiation, compromise and conflict -- but, above all, there has to be communication, digital or otherwise.
The team behind the couple-centric new app and web service Avocado, which includes three couples, aims to facilitate that communication with easy one-to-one tools for messaging, photo sharing and collaborative task lists.
The "less is more" ethos pervades the $1.99 Avocado app, so named because the avocado tree bears fruit in pairs. You simply sign up with two email addresses and a single password, and within minutes you can begin exchanging brief messages, photos, emoticons -- but only with that singular someone that the app repeatedly, annoyingly refers to as "your boo."
The app comes in both iOS and Android versions, supporting notification alerts to make sure that you don't miss a moment; the web version provides a helpful archive. In some relationships, the shared (low-fi) checklist tool might be a lifesaver, although there are other options out there with more flexibility.
When I suggested to my wife that we field-test Avocado, her response was "Really?... Do I need 'a fun new way to stay connected with the most important person in [my] life'? And is this fun new way kind of mushy and more about texture than taste, though it's really good mixed with lime juice and salt?"
Yes, I allowed, we already have a full folio of digital points of contact, ranging from the simple SMS to the Twitter DM to the Facebook message -- even a phone call, if you're into that kind of thing. Sending an iMessage pings multiple devices and the Mac; you can build a private sharing spot with Glassboard if you want to. But there is one area where Avocado sells itself as a superior solution.
Ever sent a text message to your significant other, then realized you accidentally sent it to your boss instead - or to your mom? Had a direct message that somehow lost its leading D and went live to the Internet instead of to your sweetheart? Yeah, we know. So there's something to be said for an app that makes the entire addressing process moot. By design, Avocado is point to point and person to person -- if you're in the right app, you're reaching your one and only. (Or, if we must, "your boo.")
The core functions of Avocado may be pretty basic now, but the company has plans to add more features based on user feedback. If you haven't found that perfect way to connect digitally with that perfect person, maybe the Avocado app is for you.

Former Apple UI designer joins Facebook to lead product design team
It remains to be seen exactly what he'll be involved with, but Facebook's new Product Design Manager brings quite a background with him to the job. Until just a few months ago, Chris Weeldreyer was a UI Design Manager at Apple (a role held for over eight years) where, as The Next Web reports, he was responsible for the company's iWeb and Numbers software, and has been named in a number of Apple's patent applications. Before that, he worked in both hardware and software product development, having held positions at Frog Design, Pentagram and Cooper. No word from either company on the move, but Weeldreyer himself made the move official on his LinkedIn page -- and, of course, his Facebook profile.Former Apple UI designer joins Facebook to lead product design team originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 22 Jun 2012 16:58:00 EDT. Today's Google Doodle is a working Turing machine that contains six puzzles. Sophia Foster-Dimino on Google's Doodle team built the app in honor of Alan Turing's 100th birthday.
What's a Turing machine? It's not an actual machine, per se, but a thought experiment that allowed for the advent of digital computing.

BlackBerry and Channel 4 team up to bring reality TV show to UK
BlackBerry has teamed up with Channel 4 in the UK to bring about an eight-part series entitled Summer Daze with BlackBerry. With the summer festival season upon us, the series will follow 18-25 year olds who attend music festivals around the country in a reality type show. BlackBerry plans to show the episodes through an online hub on its website and will offer exclusive content. Viewers can then interact with the group being followed via social media. We have seen BlackBerry fund a TV show before, also music related, calledLive and Lost with BlackBerry. It followed music artists travelling the country to their concert venues guided only by their fans who they communicated with on their BlackBerry smartphones. No details yet on when it will be aired but with festivals kicking off this weekend in Hackney, London, we'll probably get confirmed dates soon. Check out the video above for a quick preview.
