Hands On With Windows 8 Release Preview: It?s All About the Apps
Windows users are one step closer to getting a major system facelift -- and if today's release of Microsoft's latest OS build tells us anything, it's that the company is putting the system's strongest focus on lean and mean Metro apps.
Samsung Galaxy S III announced for Canada with 2GB of RAM, 1.5GHz dual-core processor
The Canadian variant of the Samsung Galaxy S III will scrap the quad-core Exynos processor found in the European version and instead feature a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor. The Canadian handset, like the Japanese model, will also receive a RAM boost from 1GB to 2GB. It has already been confirmed that the Galaxy S III would be equipped with a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor on U.S. carriers with 4G LTE networks. It is unclear, however, if U.S. devices will also receive the RAM increase, although it does seem more likely now. The Samsung Galaxy S III will be available in Canada beginning June 20th. Samsung’s press release follows below. The Samsung GALAXY S III provides Canadians with a more human
Developer runs WebKit on Chumby to bypass Flash
Things haven't been looking so good for Chumby recently -- in April, the company stopped hardware sales, and that was pretty much its bread and butter. Though the device may be well past its prime, at least it has some worth to the hackers among us. Take Huan Troung, who decided to use the Chumby as the starting point for making a temperature logger. To be fair, he ended up using the Insignia Infocast, a rebranded Chumby, and while the device was a good fit for his project, he wanted more freedom than the Flash framework allowed him. So Huan decided to run WebKit on the gadget. The result is a more app-friendly interface with support for a wide range of coding languages. Check out the video below for a look at the device running the temperature app.Continue reading Developer runs WebKit on Chumby to bypass FlashDeveloper runs WebKit on Chumby to bypass Flash originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 31 May 2012 07:54:00 EDT. Windows 8 Release Preview leaked prior to official debut
Microsoft announced that its Windows 8 Release Preview will be available during the first week of June, possibly after the company’s Computex keynote on June 6th. A Chinese edition of the Release Preview, however, has been circulating around the Web prior to the software’s official debut. The build reportedly includes new Metro-style Sports, Travel, and News apps, along with an updated boot screen, cursors, wallpapers and multiple monitor desktop improvements. Microsoft?s latest operating system is rumored to launch in October in three different versions, Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT. China approves sale of Apple 3G device, possibly the new iPad
As reported by the Wall Street Journal, China's Telecommunication Equipment Certification Center has approved a license for the sale of an unnamed 3G device from Apple. The device is compatible with China Unicom and is listed as model A1430, which is the model number Apple uses for the new iPad.
Though it is on sale in many countries worldwide, the iPad is not yet available in China. This delayed launch is likely the result of an ongoing legal dispute with Proview over the iPad name. Apple has not publicly commented on a Chinese iPad launch, and a China Unicom spokeswoman declined to comment when approached by the Wall Street Journal.China approves sale of Apple 3G device, possibly the new iPad originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Wed, 30 May 2012 13:00:00 EST. Sonos 3.8 update adds Mountain Lion support
Sonos, which was a bit tardy when it came to adding Lion support after having to rework some of its software, is ready for Mountain Lion. The home music system software has been updated to version 3.8, and along with it comes Mountain Lion support.
There are a few enhancements to the Sonos Controller app as well, which allows it to fit better onto smaller-sized screens -- such as the 11-inch MacBook Air -- and resizing the mini controller by clicking an icon at the top of the app's window.Sonos 3.8 update adds Mountain Lion support originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Wed, 30 May 2012 18:40:00 EST. By now, we all should understand that the original Motorola XOOM that was sold to Verizon customers back in March as the first ever Honeycomb device was a beta product. Mind-reading robotic teachers are more... Anyone? Anyone? Attention-grabbing
You'd have thought that replacing a human teacher with a swanky robot would be enough to keep the kids interested, but apparently not. The University of Wisconsin-Madison found that supplying a robot teacher didn't in itself max out concentration. In one trial, they put a Wakamaru robot instructor in the classroom with only mediocre results. But then they switched it out for a robot that could read students' EEG signals to tell when they were enjoying Matthew Broderick daydreams, and which could then change its intonation or wave its metallic hands in response. That second robot resulted in far better scores when the students were subsequently quizzed about their lessons, proving once again that teaching is about more than preaching.Mind-reading robotic teachers are more... Sony announces Xperia Go and Xperia acro S: waterproof and dual-core (video)
If you were underwhelmed by the middling specs of Sony's past toughphones, you might want to take a look at the latest pair to join the 2012 Xperia family. First up, the Xperia go houses a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 display with a dual-core 1GHz processor, powering the (unfortunately still) Gingerbread interface. Sony has reiterated that Android 4.0 will find its way to both new devices. The Xperia go also throws in a 5-megapixel camera and the same wet finger tracking seen on the Xperia Active, which will mean the phone can be steered during underwater adventures. You be able to pick from white, black and yellow color options when the phone arrives in Q3 this year. The Xperia acro S bumps the screen resolution up to 720p, slathered across a 4.3-inch surface, alongside a 12-megapixel camera and dedicated shutter button. It appears to be the global version of the Japan-only Xperia acro HD and arrives PlayStation-certified. Like the Xperia go, it totes IP55 and IP57 ratings for dust and water resistance, plus NFC capability of Sony's SmartTags. The Xperia acro S will land in black, white and pink color options -- but we're still waiting to hear more precise availability details. Video tours for both handsets are right after the break. Update: We've been told that the Xperia go will launch as the Xperia advance in the US -- but dates and prices remain a mystery.Continue reading Sony announces Xperia Go and Xperia acro S: waterproof and dual-core (video)Sony announces Xperia Go and Xperia acro S: waterproof and dual-core (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 30 May 2012 04:50:00 EDT. Tim Cook: Apple doubling-down on Siri, 'stay tuned' on Facebook developments
Well, it looks like secrecy isn't the only thing that Apple is doubling-down on these days. Speaking at D10, Tim Cook said that that Apple is "doubling down on Siri," adding that "you'll be really pleased with what you see in the coming months on this." He did also acknowledge that Siri currently has its shortcomings, but said that "customers love it," and that "what makes Siri cool is that she has a personality." When it came to a largely non-existent iOS feature at the moment -- Facebook integration -- Cook said to "stay tuned," noting that he has "great respect for them," and that he wants Facebook's hundreds of millions of customers to have "the best experience" on the iPhone and iPad.Tim Cook: Apple doubling-down on Siri, 'stay tuned' on Facebook developments originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 29 May 2012 23:02:00 EDT. Google Nexus tablet appears in benchmarks, appears to run on quad-core Tegra 3
ASUS's seven-inch MeMo tablet has just ducked under the FCC's gates, but some benchmark results for a purported Google and ASUS team-up could tally with the same device. According to the listing, the Google Asus Nexus 7 will arrive with NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 CPU, clocked at 1.3 GHz, while that (presumably) 7-inch screen packs a 768 x 1280 resolution. The hardware specs end there, but thanks to some investigation by Android Police and Rightware, it appears that this mystery tablet is running Android 4.1 -- possibly the version number for Android's next iteration, Jelly Bean. There are several more hints adding credence to these benchmark results, including the fish-based "grouper" codename, which follows the Stingray moniker that was handed to the Motorola Xoom ahead of its reveal. We're just itching to know whether it'll still manage a sub-$300 price-tag.Google Nexus tablet appears in benchmarks, appears to run on quad-core Tegra 3 originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 30 May 2012 04:59:00 EDT. Verizon, Google get ready to post Galaxy Nexus' Android 4.0.4 update, really really this time
After a horrible tease at the start of the month, Google and Verizon finally appear ready to roll out the Android 4.0.4 update for the LTE Galaxy Nexus. Verizon has just posted the install guide for its elusive IMM76K upgrade, a telltale sign that the update could push out (in this case, from Google) within the next few days. The fixes are largely those that hit the HSPA+ version in March, although that means important Calendar interface tweaks as well as email and device fixes. More than anything, it should close one of the most inexplicably long chapters for minor OS updates in recent memory: Verizon's Galaxy Nexus owners are the last to get 4.0.4, having run on 4.0.2 since December and having exhibited even more patience than Sprint buyers.Verizon, Google get ready to post Galaxy Nexus' Android 4.0.4 update, really really this time originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 29 May 2012 19:48:00 EDT. Alcatel outs 4.5-inch, 720p OT986 smartphone with Ice Cream Sandwich in China
Alcatel is relatively a newcomer to the world of smartphone manufacturing, but the company's latest handset is certainly bound to turn some heads. Dubbed "OT986," this 4.5-inch device packs a hefty amount of all-around power (unlike that Venture), starting with its 1280 x 720 HD, IPS display, which is paired nicely alongside a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU (TI OMAP 4460), one gig of RAM and 8GB of internal storage -- and, there's also a lower-end model sporting a 1.2GHz processor and a mere 4GB of built-in storage. Furthermore, Alcatel's new Ice Cream Sandwich slab is said to hit the Chinese market under the TCL S900 moniker for 1,999 yuan (about $314), but deets are still cloudy on whether it'll be stuffed with the same juicy specs as the aforementioned OT986. While we wait to hear which other countries the device will make its way into, though, you can hit the source link below to gander at some extra eye candy.Continue reading Alcatel outs 4.5-inch, 720p OT986 smartphone with Ice Cream Sandwich in ChinaAlcatel outs 4.5-inch, 720p OT986 smartphone with Ice Cream Sandwich in China originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 29 May 2012 16:47:00 EDT. Microsoft Office for iPad reportedly on track for November release
A recent report from BGR reiterates the earlier claim from The Daily that Microsoft is working on a version of Office for the iPad. According to BGR, Microsoft is bringing the complete Office suite to both the iPad and Android tablets by November of this year. BGR's source claims the version he saw was almost identical to the one leaked earlier this year by The Daily.
The Daily got wind of the BGR report and responded with a post directed at Microsoft that was sharp and forthright. The authors called Microsoft "filthy, lying liars" for allegedly showing The Daily a version of the Office software for the iPad and then saying publicly it was "not a real picture of a real Microsoft software product." You can read The Daily's response on its website.

5000 books return to Kindle Store after dispute ends
Thanks to a contract negotiation dispute between Amazon and the Independent Publishers Group, the giant e-tailer pulled 5000 titles from the Kindle Store back in February. As of today, however, the books have returned after the two parties reached an agreement.Earlier in the year, when it came time for the contract to be renegotiated, IPG's president Mark Suchomel said Amazon proposed new terms that were "substantially changed" from the previous terms, meaning lower revenue for the authors. Suchomel is said to have offered terms comparable to other publishers in the marketplace, but Amazon did not agree and pulled the electronic books whilst keeping the physical titles available for sale. There was no word on the intricacies of the new deal, but clearly they must be more favorable to everyone involved then in past negotiations. The dispute is not the first Amazon has had with publishers in recent years, as many used to accuse Amazon of having a monopoly on the market. Apple and the major publishers were recently sued by the DOJ for allegedly colluding to break Amazon's "stranglehold" on the market.Permalink | Comments

A recent Kickstarter project that is now 514 percent funded and in production, the HAND Stylus (US$25) comes from a Bay Area designer who was unhappy with the many styluses already on the market. Read on for a review, video, and a chance to win a HAND Stylus.
Designer Steve King uses many mechanical pencils and pens in his daily work, and wanted a stylus that mimicked the weight and feel of one of those pricey writing tools. The HAND Stylus is a beautifully-balanced six-sided metal stylus that feels perfect in your hand. It's not fat and stubby like some styluses, nor short and too lightweight like others.
Gallery: HAND Stylus
The HAND Stylus comes in a rainbow of colors, and the point where you grip the stylus is nicely knurled so you can keep a nice grip on it. There's a stainless steel pocket clip on the HAND that keeps the stylus close by whether you put it into a pocket or attach it magnetically to an iPad 2 or third-generation iPad. The stylus also makes a wonderful gift, as it comes in a metal gift box that is very classy.
One feature I really like about the HAND after using a competing stylus for a while is that the tip is retractable. The tip of my other stylus has been a magnet for dust and gooey food residue, while I can retract the tip of the HAND when I'm done using it to keep it clean. That tip also rotates with each click of the retract button, ensuring that the tip wears evenly. The tip, by the way, is only 4 mm across and allows for fine control while drawing, writing, or selecting tiny buttons on your iPhone.
I expect that I'm going to have to apologize to the manufacturer of the stylus I used up until now, because from now on I'm going to be using a HAND Stylus. Two lucky TUAW readers are going to win a HAND Stylus and here are the rules:

Devon Steampunk Tread 1 Watch Looks Like Something An Extraordinary Gentleman Would Wear
California-based watch maker Devon made a name for themselves a few years ago when they released the Tread 1. The modern looking electro-mechanical timepiece dazzled people with its tread-based system to indicate the time. It was large, highly unorthodox for a high-end timepieces, and a little crazy. A full review of the Devon Tread 1 is here.

Catch a glimpse of an iPhone assembly line
Chinese news site ifeng has managed to boldly go where few, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, have gone before -- inside of the Zhengzhou Foxconn facility to get a peek at how iPhones are made. There's nothing new that we haven't seen on ABC's Nightline regarding the factory, as The Verge points out, but the video does provide a good sense of how big one of these factories are and offers a glimpse into how iPhones are produced. Check out the full video below, but no English subtitles are provided.

ZBoard electric skateboard sneakers-on (video)
We spotted the dudes behind the ZBoard at TechCrunch Disrupt earlier this week, but we weren't content to just ride the electric skateboard up and down the halls of Pier 94. We asked them to take a walk with us to Washington Square Park so we could take the board for a spin in a more realistic setting -- also, any excuse to skip out of work a bit earlier to go skating in the park on a sunny Friday afternoon is hard to turn down. We initially asked them to meet us at one of New York City's many skate parks, but they balked at the suggestion -- after all, it's more of a commuting board than anything else. It's big and fairly heavy, so attempting to go vert with the thing is pretty much out -- grinding and kickflips are likely off the table, too. Co-creator Geoff Larson told us he managed to get the thing up on two wheels, but that's about the limit of trickery at the moment -- we're sure that'll change pretty quickly, as soon as more boards make their way into the hands of the public. In the meantime, the ZBoard is all about getting around, giving you about 10 miles on a single charge. Larson added that one skater said he planned to use his ZBoard to make the long trip to the skatepark and back, carrying his manual board along for the ride. Join us after the break for some sneakers-on impressions.Gallery: ZBoard electric skateboard hands-onContinue reading ZBoard electric skateboard sneakers-on (video)ZBoard electric skateboard sneakers-on (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 25 May 2012 18:02:00 EDT. Facebook hit with another class action suit, this time over IPO debacle
Pennsylvania-based law firmKessler Topaz Meltzer & Check, LLP on Friday filed a class action lawsuit against Facebook regarding the handling of its initial public offering, which was made on March 18th. On the day of its IPO, the company was hit with a privacy-related class action lawsuit seeking $15 billion in damages. This new complaint, which was filed inthe United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, charges Facebook and multiple officers, directors and underwriterswith violating theSecurities Act of 1933 by failing to disclose or disregarding material adverse facts that were known to them. “The Complaint asserts that defendants failed to disclose at the time of the IPO that Facebook was then experiencing a severe and pronounced
Sony confirms Xperia Play will remain on Gingerbread due to gaming issues
Sony Mobile on Friday confirmed that it no longer plans to update its Xperia Play smartphone to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich due tocompatibilityissues with the device’s gaming features, Phone Scoop reported. “Ice Cream Sandwich demands more from the phone hardware than Gingerbread,” a Sony spokesperson said. “Android 4.0 is a more powerful OS and thus, more resource intensive – applications require more RAM, CPU power, and network bandwidth. From internal testing and feedback from the developer community on the beta ROM software release, we have seen a significant decline in user experience when running high performance games, as they are more demanding on the hardware. Keep on rolling with Chromasphere for the BlackBerry PlayBook
While you maybe working away or enjoying the sun this week, many of you may be looking for a new game to shed away some of that extra time this weekend. One of my more recent finds is Chromasphere for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Chromasphere is a game that utilizes the PlayBook?s accelerometer and gyroscope to have you navigate a glowing ball through a labyrinth of hills and turns. By Redmotion Games, the developer of Chromasphere has said that this game is technically in a beta stage and will be receiving frequent updates to the games levels and features. Features Roll a Chromasphere using tilt controls and full 3d physics engine! Get to the end of each 3d level within the bronze, silver and gold times to win medals! Pit yourself against your last best time with the "ghost" replay mode: an easy way to improve your skills! Complete 18 3d Levels with many more to come! Collect 4 colored shards to activate the Chromasphere colors and open colored doors, activate colored switches and cross colored bridges! Moving and rotating platforms! Plus more obstacles to come! Touch-based Camera Controls: Swipe the screen left and right to move the camera. Pinch the screen in and out to zoom in and out. Chromasphere has you navigating 13 full 3D levels, moving and rotating platforms and locked passages that will have you playing for hours. While the developer stated that this is still in beta, it feels like a polished game to me. It would be neat to have Scoreloop integration and allow the player to challenged themselves as they race against their previous time. Chromasphere for the BlackBerry PlayBook and is available in BlackBerry App World for .99 cents and is certainly worth the download. Incident?s gTar Tops $120,000 On Kickstarter (That?s $110K In Less Than 24 Hours)
Kickstarter is a great place to launch a product. Remember the Pebble smart watch, which saw over $1 million in funding in its first 28 hours on the site, and surpassing $3 million well over a month before their stated goal?
Disrupt, which just so happens to be underway as I type these very words, is also an excellent place to launch your product. We've seen countless companies rise to almost instantaneous success after stepping off of our stage, like Soluto, Mint.com, Redbeacon, and GroupMe.
So it should be no surprise that Incident's now-famous gTar, which was launched both on the Disrupt Battlefield stage and on Kickstarter, has made upwards of $120,000 on Kickstarter since launching on our stage yesterday.

Samsung Galaxy S III review
More Info Samsung Galaxy S III is official: 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display, quad-core Exynos processor and gesture functions Samsung Galaxy S III preview: hands-on with the next Android superphone (video) Samsung Galaxy S III software impressions (video) It's a strange feeling, receiving such a keenly anticipated phone to review. The hubbub of launch events, hands-on previews and heated debates suddenly dies away, leaving you with one small and intensely silent cardboard box. In this instance, the packaging contained the "marble white" version of the Galaxy S III (not the more daring "pebble blue") alongside one burning question: apart from all the hype, do this handset's paper credentials translate into a product that is worthy of serious cash and a 24-month commitment? Those credentials are certainly more subtle than those of other recent devices. There's no unusual camera, stand-out display or unibody build. Instead, we get an abstract design statement about the phone being "inspired by nature" alongside a list of incremental hardware improvements such as a quad-core processor, as well as fresh additions to Samsung's customized Android 4.0 skin. As it turns out, these specs forgo immediate swagger in favor of creating a solid workhorse of a smartphone that is intent on attracting a long-term following. Read on and you'll discover just how it pulls that off. Sony ST26i benchmarks reveal Android 4.0, 4-inch FWVGA display and lackluster performance
Rumors of the Sony ST26i smartphone have been swirling for a while now, but up until recently, we've had nothing to sink our teeth into. Thankfully, we've now come across an OpenGL benchmark test and system profile for the yet-to-be-announced handset, and while this one seems destined for emerging markets and budget-minded consumers, the ST26i will come with just enough niceties to hold its head high. First and foremost, the system profile reveals Ice Cream Sandwich on the handset, and even better, it'll include a 4-inch, 854 x 480 display -- none of that HVGA crap here. To keep costs low, sacrifices had to be made: the phone will include a Qualcomm MSM7627A SoC, which includes a pedestrian 800MHz CPU and an Adreno 200 GPU. Curiously, the ST26i was previously rumored to contain an ST-Ericsson U8500 chip with a dual-core 1GHz CPU, which leaves open the possibility that we may see different configurations based on markets. Still, if Sony is able to exercise some restraint with its custom skin, the ST26i could shape up to be a very nice handset.Sony ST26i benchmarks reveal Android 4.0, 4-inch FWVGA display and lackluster performance originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 25 May 2012 01:33:00 EDT. Microsoft pulling free development tools for Windows 8 desktop apps, only lets you ride the Metro for free (update: confirmed)
Microsoft has instituted a big change with its free Visual Studio 11 Express suite that's leaving some current- and soon-to-be Windows 8 developers up in arms: it's pulling support for creating anything but Metro-native apps. After 11 becomes the norm, desktop developers will need to either cling to Visual Studio 2010 for dear life or fork over the $500 for Visual Studio 11 Professional. Programmers won't have the option of backdoor coding, either, with both the compiler and toolchain being pulled from Windows' framework. The situation doesn't represent the end of the world for some developers -- more established pros don't balk at a $500 price, and third-party tools will likely live on -- but it sets a much higher price of entry for desktop apps developed through the official route, especially if you want to write games using XNA. We've reached out to Microsoft for a response, but for now we'd suggest setting aside five Benjamins if Start screen tiles and app charms aren't your cups of tea. Update: We've confirmed with a Microsoft spokesperson that it's true you'll need Professional if you want to write desktop apps using Visual Studio. It's equally correct, though, that third-party developer kits will keep building desktop apps as long as they have their own compilers and related tools. Students can get Professional for free if they're in the Dreamspark program.Microsoft pulling free development tools for Windows 8 desktop apps, only lets you ride the Metro for free (update: confirmed) originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 24 May 2012 18:07:00 EDT. The TechCrunch iPad app is slick and simple
If you're looking for an app-based TechCrunch experience on your iPad, here it is. The iPad app is a streamlined experience over the site in Safari, presenting a simple list of categories to choose from, and 3 basic feeds: the main river (which can be narrowed using those categories), trending stories and curated tweets. There's a lot more under the hood, however.
Commuters will be pleased to know there's a "Save for later" option when clicking the "Share" icon. You can, of course, also share stories via email or social media, and the app allows you to tie your Facebook account in (TechCrunch uses Facebook comments, primarily). My favorite feature is the easy access to Crunchbase data alongside each article.
While it's easy to click into more info, the app never goes too deep to get you lost. I can't stand when apps just layer interfaces on top, over and over, and you have to "flip" the pages just to get back to the main screen. The TechCrunch app uses a familiar "back" and "next" system, although it is often labelled in context (Saved Articles takes you back to your list but Explore may take you further down the rabbit hole of data). This makes reading articles a breeze, and makes it easy to find out more information without being overhwhelmed.
About the only problem I encountered was with the curated tweets. When jumping to a story on The Next Web, the smallish webview that takes up the lower half of the screen was overwhelmed by a slow cover-up from TNW urging you to register, or something, and it happened to cover the article I was trying to read!
Aside from things beyond the app's control, such as annoying web design habits, it's a great way to read TechCrunch on your iPad. TUAW's imaginary friend, our own iPad app, is very jealous! The app is free, so give it a try yourself. The TechCrunch iPad app is slick and simple originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Thu, 24 May 2012 11:15:00 EST. FCC Outs Another Huawei-Made MyTouch for T-Mobile
According to documents seen on the Federal Communications Commission web site, Huawei has a second MyTouch Android smartphone in the works for T-Mobile USA. The Huawei U8730, also referred to in the documentation as the Ascend G 312 Qwerty, is a follow up to the U8680, which also recently cleared the FCC. Where the U8680 was a monoblock device, the U8730 has a QWERTY keyboard, according to the FCC documents. The device label in the FCC documents refers to the U8730 as the "T-Mobile myTouch Q," which strongly suggests that this will be the final name of the device. It also supports the 850/1900MHz and AWS 1700MHz bands, which are the spectrum bands used by T-Mobile USA's 2G and 3G networks. The U8730 also supports WCDMA in the 950/1900MHz bands. Neither T-Mobile nor Huawei has announced this device.
Solar-powered airplane embarks on first transcontinental flight
An experimental solar-powered airplane embarked on its first transcontinental flight on Thursday, The Associated Press reported. The Solar Impulse plane left Switzerland and, after a pilot change in Spain, should reach North Africa next week. The aircraft features a 207-foot wingspan and more than 12,000 solarpanels. The project began in 2003 and is estimated to cost about $100 million over 10 years. The Swiss traveled to Belgium and France last year to complete the Solar Impulse’s first international flight. The mission to Africa is described as the final dress rehearsal before a round-the-world flight that will include stops in the United States using a newer and more improved model scheduled to be unveiled in 2014. Apple pulls Airfoil Speakers Touch from the App Store (Updated)
Update: CoM says a tipster tells them this is because Airfoil Speakers Touch may be duplicating functionality we're going to see in iOS 6. That was our guess as well.
Apple has pulled Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil Speakers Touch from the App Store. The app, which made it possible to stream from a computer to an iOS-capable device using Airfoil, had been on the store since 2009. Airfoil Speakers Touch 3 was released last month.
The developers say that Apple informed them of the removal on Tuesday, but did not receive a clear answer as to why Apple removed the app. As far as they can tell, they're in full compliance. Airfoil Speakers Touch 3 added the ability to receive audio from other iOS devices and iTunes.

Why did RIM?s Executive VP of Global Sales quit his job?

For a guy who is under 40, this is a prestigious position to hold. He climbed up the ranks at RIM quickly. I've been a fan of Patrick. He was a visible public face for RIM. He has broad, global sales experience, and having held at least two regional VP positions (Asia Pacific and North Amercica) over his years at RIM. So why did he quit? And what does it mean for RIM? I'm not sure what the right answer is yet. I chatted last night with a few folks who follow RIM closely and it seems everyone is still digging for the truth. read moreCrackBerry.com's feed sponsored by ShopCrackBerry.com. T-Mobile and MetroPCS Ask FCC to Clamp Down On Dish
In separate filings, both T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS have asked the Federal Communications Commission to force Dish Networks to give up 50% of its spectrum in order to gain approval for its proposed LTE broadband network. Dish has 40MHz of S-Band spectrum in the 2000-2020 MHz and 2180-2200 MHz bands. Dish wants to repurpose this spectrum for a terrestrial LTE-Advanced network. T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS contend that Dish should agree to give up 20MHz of the 40MHz block in order to avoid a "windfall" should the company eventually sell to AT&T or Verizon Wireless. They believe that the spectrum could be auctioned off to non-dominant players and still allow Dish to recoup the cost of purchasing the spectrum. The Rural Carrier Association added its own comments, suggesting that if the FCC grants the waiver for which Dish is requesting, it should be required to offer competitive roaming rates to smaller operators. The RCA also wants to prevent Dish from inking roaming agreements with AT&T and Verizon Wireless without FCC approval. Dish's proposal is similar to that of bankrupt LightSquared, but Dish's spectrum doesn't abut GPS signals.

Acer Iconia A510 Olympic Tab to launch in UK next month
Acer has been known to celebrate the Olympic Games with special-edition tech, so we weren't exactly surprised when the company launched a festive version of the Iconia Tab A510 this April in anticipation of the Summer Games in London. Now that the event is just two months away, the Tab is preparing to make its UK debut. According to the Inquirer, it will be available through Carphone Warehouse in June. To jog your memory, this version has the same specs as the original Iconia Tab A510, including a 10.1-inch IPS display, Android Ice Cream Sandwich and a 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3 CPU. There's also the same 5-megapixel camera and 32GB of onboard storage. The main difference, of course, is that this version sports an engraving of the five Olympic rings, and Acer also pre-loads a trial of Eurosport channels so users can get coverage during the Games. When the Iconia A510 Olympic Tab launches next month, it will reportedly go for £350 (about $552) without a SIM.Acer Iconia A510 Olympic Tab to launch in UK next month originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 23 May 2012 02:50:00 EDT. From the Editor's Desk: Cheers to Team BlackBerry on this Victoria Day Long Weekend!
It's a holiday weekend in Canada. Victoria Day. That means no work on Monday. Hopefully our BlackBerry making friends in Waterloo, Ottawa (QNX's hometown), Toronto (the Torch team) and elsewhere in Canada are getting a short break from their busy work schedules and are enjoying some R&R. As RIM's CEO Thorsten Heins would say, Research In Motion is "laser focused" on bringing BlackBerry 10 to market. I know all of RIM is 100% committed to making sure the launch of BB10 is a success and I *know* everybody at RIM is working their butts off to make sure they follow through on that goal. But everybody needs to recharge their batteries once in a while, so on that note I'll keep this FtED short and just say cheers to #TEAMBLACKBERRY this weekend! LOS ANGELES (May 20, 2012) - Proving that summer doesn't have to mean the start of rerun season, Hulu today announced a full slate of new original and exclusive TV shows that begin premiering on June 4th on Hulu and the Hulu Plus subscription service. Hulu's summer lineup offers new TV shows for all kinds of entertainment fans, from comedy, sci-fi, travel, reality and even a little magic. The summer slate announcement kicks off with "Spoilers," a half-hour movie "revue" for movie lovers hosted by beloved filmmaker and podcasting maven Kevin Smith ("Clerks,"
"Red State"). "Spoilers" launches on Hulu and Hulu Plus on June 4th.
"I have always wanted to do a show that provides an open forum for real fans to discuss real movies in real time and that's what 'Spoilers' is about. As a filmmaker and lover of movies, I understand that ultimately it's the fans who make the film. So in this show, we do not review movies, we revere them," said Kevin Smith. "Hulu really lends itself well to a show like this because they have an audience that is passionate and active when it comes to shows they love. And frankly, those are the people I want to hang with."
In August, Hulu will launch the highly anticipated travel series "Up To Speed" by acclaimed filmmaker Richard Linklater ("Bernie," "School of Rock," "Dazed and Confused") and starring Speed Levitch ("The Cruise"). August also brings the premiere of "We Got Next," an edgy male comedy co-created by Kenya Barris (co-creator of "America's Next Top Model") and Hale Rothstein (writer, producer of "The Game").
Hulu exclusively offers fans seven popular TV shows never before available to U.S. audiences with the premieres of "Rev.," "The Yard," "Pramface," "Derren Brown: Inside Your Mind," "The Promise" and "Little Mosque," along with the second season of the sci-fi thriller, "The Booth at the End."
