TS3Cine high-resolution digital camera coming this summer
There are so many digital cameras on the market that you can find one to suit any need or want. Some of the cameras are dirt cheap, and others can cost more than a very nice new car. The high-end offerings have more resolution and are often aimed at professionals who need to scale high-resolution images all the way up to gigantic billboard size. A new digital camera from Boston Rule Camera has surfaced that will be landing this summer.
The camera is called the TS3Cine, and it reminds me a lot of something that RED would make. It looks like a cross between a still camera and a camcorder with a bulbous grip on one side and a lens that sticks out quite a bit. The case of the camera is a matte black with a waffle design that reminds me of a speaker grill made from machined aluminum. The full specs of the camera are all kinds of impressive and should hint that the price tag is expensive.
It has a resolution of 1280 x 1024 and can shoot 720p HD video. It can shoot 500fps at 1280 x 1024 resolution and drop that back to 720p resolution and the camera can record a whopping 720 fps. Talk about super slow motion playback, you can get all the action with this camera. The electronic shutter can activate from 2ms to 1 second, and it has 8GB of memory onboard and a SDHC cards lot too. The camera can be purchased or rented. The purchase price, hold on tight, is $29,900 with turbo mode adding another $5,000 and the 256GB SSD option adding $2,000. You can rent the camera for $625 per day.

Foxconn workers arrested for leaking iPad 2 design before launch
Three Foxconn employees were arrested in late 2010 for violating Apple's trade secret agreement and leaking details about the design of the iPad 2, and were charged this week.
All three of the employees were arrested in China in December, over three months before the iPad 2 was unveiled by Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
The alleged leaks let accessory makers create designs, some of which were very close to what the final product was, including the rounded back, camera location and new speaker location.
Foxconn is a major producer of Apple products like the iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air but made headlines last years after a slew of suicides at their factories.
It was then reported that worker's families were making more money from the suicide compensation than the workers were making in three years of labored salary.Permalink | Comments

Verizon says it will put location warning labels on all phones sold
See that rather ominous warning label above? That's a new sticker that will soon be placed directly on the screen of every new device Verizon Wireless sells. Contrary to what you might suspect, however, that's not being done in response to the most recent iPhone 4 tracking fiasco. The label was revealed in a letter to Representatives Ed Markey and Joe Barton, who themselves sent a letter to Verizon (and the three other major carriers) on March 29th inquiring about a New York Times story that raised concerns about how carriers collect and store personal location data. As for the other carriers' responses, they apparently aren't going as far as Verizon has with its warning label, but they do mostly echo Verizon's response in other respects. They all say, for instance, that personal data is secured by a variety of means and stored only as long as needed (which can apparently vary by carrier, though), that they don't rent or sell personal information, and that they request customer consent before accessing location data. Despite those assurances, however, Rep. Markey says he's still left with a "feeling of uneasiness and uncertainty," and he's pointing a finger at third-party developers in particular, who he says must be held "accountable."Verizon says it will put location warning labels on all phones sold originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Apr 2011 11:11:00 EDT. AT&T brings HSUPA to Atrix 4G and Inspire 4G, one requires WiFi to download update
If you're the somewhat-proud-but-feeling-throttled owner of a Motorola Atrix 4G or HTC Inspire 4G, your days of terribly slow uploads are nearly through -- following some preliminary tests, AT&T is rolling out updates that provide "increased potential data speed" to both HSPA+ handsets right on cue. The Inspire 4G's patch will also "make the email set up process much easier," while the Atrix 4G will actually get a pair of updates which will allegedly bring better Bluetooth headset compatibility, fingerprint reader performance and battery life (which is always a plus) as well as the questionable utility of turning the Atrix into an EDGE hotspot, and a bump to Android 2.2.2 to hopefully fix any lingering SMS routing bugs. Word of warning though, you'll need to throw your Atrix up on a WiFi network to obtain these goodies -- all the Gs in the world won't help you.AT&T brings HSUPA to Atrix 4G and Inspire 4G, one requires WiFi to download update originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 30 Apr 2011 12:33:00 EDT. Apple, Google to testify at Congressional hearing on location tracking
Senator Al Franken released a statement today thanking Apple and Google for agreeing to attend a hearing on mobile technology and privacy. According to Franken, the goal of the hearing is to "serve as a first step in investigating if federal law protecting consumer privacy-particularly when it relates to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets-is keeping pace with advances in technology."
The hearing is set for May 10 in Washington, D.C. and has the catchy title "Protecting Mobile Privacy: Your Smartphones, Tablets, Cell Phones and Your Privacy." We'll keep you posted on the result of that hearing and we'll reach out to Sen. Franken for comment after they conclude. Full press release below.

Sen. Franken Thanks Google, Apple for Agreeing to Appear at Hearing on Mobile Technology & Privacy
Thursday, April 28, 2011
Today, U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.), Chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law, thanked Apple and Google for agreeing to send representatives to testify at the May 10th hearing on mobile technology and privacy. They will be joining officials from the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission; Ashkan Soltani, independent privacy researcher and consultant; and Justin Brookman, Director of the Center for Democracy and Technology's Project on Consumer Privacy.
"I'm pleased that Apple and Google have confirmed that they'll be sending representatives to testify at my upcoming hearing on mobile technology and privacy," said Sen. Franken. "This hearing will serve as a first step in investigating if federal law protecting consumer privacy-particularly when it relates to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets-is keeping pace with advances in technology. Each of the witnesses at the hearing will play a critical role in helping us better understand this complex issue and I look forward to hearing from them."
Sen. Franken's hearing, called "Protecting Mobile Privacy: Your Smartphones, Tablets, Cell Phones and Your Privacy," is scheduled for Tuesday, May 10th at 10:00 a.m. in 226 Dirksen Senate Office Building.
Protecting Minnesotans' and Americans' consumer rights and privacy has been a priority for Sen. Franken since he came to the Senate. Last week, he sent a letter to Apple CEO Steve Jobs asking him to address privacy concerns about the company's iOS 4 operating system, which security researchers have said secretly stores detailed information about users' locations on their iPhones, iPads, and any computers to which the devices are synched, generally in an unencrypted format. Since then, Apple, Inc. has announced that it will update its iOS 4 operating system to address several of the issues raised in Sen. Franken's letter.
Last year, Sen. Franken pressed Attorney General Holder to incorporate an analysis of geotags-information about a person's location that is embedded in photos and videos taken with GPS-equipped smartphones-into an updated stalking victimization study connected to the National Crime Victimization Survey. This March, Sen. Franken also led several of his Senate colleagues in urging Facebook to stop plans that would have permitted third party application providers to access users' home addresses and phone numbers. Earlier this month, he asked the U.S. Department of Justice to clarify its interpretation of a critical federal law that protects personal data after a security breach at Epsilon Data Management and allegations that several popular smartphone applications were gathering and disclosing users' private information without their knowledge or consent.

Microsoft Offers App Migration Tool For iPhone to Windows Phone 7
In a bid to win over more developers, Microsoft is offering up a new app migration tool to make it easier to port over iOS apps to the Windows Phone 7 platform. The new API Mapping Tool lets iOS coders take programming calls and translate them to the equivalent classes, methods, and notification events in Windows Phone 7.
The API Mapping Tool is available with plenty of documentation, videos, and other resources to help guide along developers. The API works more like a dictionary that allows developers to pick out bits of code to be translated. Microsoft notes that there’s “no magic wand that will do the work for you,” but that the new API will make things less painstaking.
Currently, the three major categories that can be mapped with the tool are Network/Internet, User Interface, and Data Management. Not all parts are mappable at the moment, but Microsoft promises more APIs to be mapped soon. They also promise a similar tool to come for Android app migration.

Tesla J1772 mobile connector standardizes Roadster, costs $750
That non-standard charge port on your Tesla Roadster isn't proprietary, it's just outmoded -- but don't worry, a four foot adapter is here to save the day. This new J1772 to Roadster connector bridges the Roadster's 2008 designed charge port to the industry standard J1772, adopted by automakers and energy firms over a full year after the Roadster's debut. The new coupling cable will juice up your wheels in just four hours at EV stations outputting 70 amps, or in seven and a half hours for the average 32 amp level 2 charger. Native plug access to those thousands of ChargePoint stations will set you back $750, but if you've already bought a Tesla Roadster, that's just another drop in the ($100,000) bucket.Tesla J1772 mobile connector standardizes Roadster, costs $750 originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 30 Apr 2011 00:29:00 EDT. Nexus S 2.3.4 update now available to early adopters via manual install
The Nexus S is due to receive an over-the-air update to Android 2.3.4 over the coming weeks, but Google earned a +1 from eager fans and devs hoping to get the extra Google Talk functionality sooner. Instead of hopelessly checking for updates until the time is right, the Powers That Be are now offering the upgrade as a manual download to anyone who is already running 2.3.3 on the i9020T (the AWS-equipped model). We urge you to proceed with caution here and double-check that your phone is compatible, since those are the two requirements for the download to install properly. We've happily bumped one of our devices up to 2.3.4 this way without any sweat or tears, so we hope it will be a smooth experience for others as well. If you choose to be adventurous and update your Nexus S, click the source link below to download the necessary ZIP file.

Google patent app puts fragmented social networks and services in one place
I’m not that big on social networking, but for many people social networking is a huge deal. Google already has a myriad of offerings that are social in nature, even if they aren?t Facebook, which many think of when they hear social networking. Many of Google’s various services have a social edge to them. The catch is that many of the services are accessed through their own portals making the act of following them tedious.
A new patent app from Google shows that the search giant is thinking about making interaction with all its varied social services much more streamlined. The interface shows what looks like a Facebook News Feed or Twitter feed. All of those varied services from Google post updates and other bits of information on the one screen. It all looks very interesting, and I could see this being tightly integrated into any Android or Chrome OS device for sure.
I like the second image in the gallery best. You see a long line of icons for various Google services and clicking one of them will bring you to the updates and messages that come with that service. I also see the Facebook icon thrown in there. I would use a single app that would allow me to follow every social network I use in one place if Google offered it. Granted for me that is only Facebook, but if you are a heavy social network user this might be the perfect app from a name that most of us knows.

Apple Store back up, white iPhone now available
Hours after the white iPhone went on sale internationally and a lengthy downtime, it is now available through the US Apple Store, as well as AT&T and Verizon's websites. As mentioned earlier, the handset should be available at Apple's brick-and-mortar stores when they open later today. Apple's front and iPhone pages have yet to be updated with the now-available status of the phone, but will most likely mirror the "finally" ads that are appearing on AT&T and Verizon's sites.

Apple patents Fitness Center App for iPhone
Patently Apple's got another USPTO-sponsored bulletin from the R&D Department in Cupertino, and this time it's for a brand new app designed to help you stay in touch with your local gym. A recently published patent details a Fitness Center App that will do things like track your workouts from exercise machines, mark down when and where you visit the gym, and even find a workout partner with social networking or set up appointments for personal trainers straight from the app. [Maybe they'll call it "QuadsSquare." -Ed.]
In short, Apple's idea is that one app would govern all facets of an exercise program, with a heavy back-end system to work with different gyms all over the country. You'd be able to get news and information straight from your local gym, as well as custom reminders when you miss a workout or haven't been in a while.
It all sounds good to us. While most of Apple's patents are usually just the company covering its bases, this one seems awfully in-depth -- everything from concepts to layouts is covered here. That doesn't mean this idea is any more likely to actually be implemented, but it does mean that Apple has put lots of thought and effort into an app like this. Maybe we will see it implemented as an actual release.Apple patents Fitness Center App for iPhone originally appeared on TUAW on Thu, 28 Apr 2011 19:15:00 EST. NVIDIA brings SLI support to AMD 990FX, 990X and 970 chipsets
It's not going so far as to expand support as far as AMD has with its CrossFireX multi-GPU technology, but NVIDIA has now at least taken one step in that direction. The company announced today that it's finally bringing SLI support to AMD platforms -- specifically, upcoming motherboards based on AMD's 990FX, 990X and 970 chipsets. Those will be offered by ASUS, Gigabyte, ASRock, and MSI initially, with additional manufacturers said to be coming on board "shortly." Hit up the source link below for NVIDIA's complete statement on the matter -- in which it also just so happens to point out that 93 percent of all multi-GPU systems in use today use SLI, according to Steam statistics.

South Park Spoofs Apple Location Tracking Controversy
The Apple location tracking controversy continues with denials from Apple and a class-action lawsuit pending. It sure didn’t take long for South Park to take a fun jab at the situation in their Season 15 episode titled HUMANCENTiPAD. Enjoy a short segment of the video after the cut.
Researchers have discovered an unencrypted database file stored on iPhones and iPad 3GS devices that log location information of the user for up to a year. The data collected includes longitude and latitude coordinates estimated in relation to cell tower and hot spot locations and stored with timestamps.
Android and Windows Phone devices have been pointed out to collect location information as well, but using a slightly different method.
Android devices only record the last few dozen locations, whereas a possible oversight in the Apple firmware allows it to store up to a year’s worth of information as well as collect data even while location service apps are turned off.

Samsung gets Galaxy S II party started (with bonus thumb research)
Samsung has given the Galaxy S II the smartphone equivalent of a champagne bottle across the bows, kicking off plans to launch the Android handset on over 140 carriers spread across 120 countries. Star of a media event in Korea this morning, the Galaxy S II not only offers a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display but the thumb-research to back up its usability. Apparently Samsung took its tape measure around Korea, figuring out that the average thumb is 58.6mm long, before green-lighting the huge display as suitable for one-handed use.
Those Korean thumbs will also get to use NFC for mobile payments and a DMB digital TV tuner; Samsung says the latter adds 1mm to the Galaxy S II’s waifish 8.89mm build. Other countries will get NFC, though Samsung is yet to confirm the definitive list. There was no sign of it in our European test model, certainly.
Nonetheless, we weren’t short on praise for the Galaxy S II when we reviewed the dual-core smartphone earlier this week; check out the full review for details. The Samsung Galaxy S II gets broad availability in the UK on May 1, though launches on US carriers haven’t been dated yet.

Verizon Identifies LTE Killer, Working to Restore Service
Verizon Wireless has issued a statement regarding the on-going outage of its Long Term Evolution 4G network. Verizon Wireless said it has determined what caused the network outage and is working with its major vendor partners to fix the problem. "Our network engineers are working to resolve this quickly," the company said in a statement. In the meantime, Verizon points out that 4G phones will still be able to make voice calls while the LTE network is out, and that customers may connect to its older 1XRTT network. Verizon said that it will restore LTE network access in a market-by-market basis, and will provide additional details as they become available.

Rogers To Roll Out LTE Network In Canada By Year End
Rogers Communications Inc. is rolling out the first LTE network in four cities in Canada this year; Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Ottowa. LTE is the favorite of the 4th Generation wireless protocols as its speeds have been demonstrated to be 6-12 Mbps. Much of the world has committed infrastructure to WiMax, which is the technical underdog, but it has a head start deployment. Sprint is considering the leap.
The new LTE network will be three to four times faster than the most advanced version of the current HSPA+ standard. This means that gamers that play graphics-intensive, multi-player games on their mobile devices will no longer experience delays or lag time. The same goes for customers that stream live TV or HD movies to their smartphones, notebooks, or tablets. And, customers that make video calls will now have a “virtually seamless” experience.
Rogers will begin deployment of the network using the AWS spectrum, which the company picked up in a 2008 auction. However, it hopes to eventually expand into multiple bands and gain access to the new 700MHz spectrum that offers better coverage in remote and rural areas. U.S. companies such as AT&T and Verizon are already building out on the 700MHz standard.

For Some Reason, These People Are Still Making A Nano Watchband
A charming couple in Ottawa, Canada, Chrys and Dom Coballe, is making some handsome, if expensive, iPod Nano watch bands that pop out and even turn at an angle to offer multiple viewing angles. Although I think the hey day of the iPod Nano watch is over, they seem far too charming to just ignore. [...]
Mario clone in App Store, place your bets for how long
You gotta be kidding. I am dying to know who, exactly, at Apple is unfamiliar with Mario the plumber. An intern born in the 90s, maybe? At any rate, go grab this platformer featuring Moninio, whose brother was captured by Bowler and is being kept in a castle. Sound familiar? It's like a mirror universe, I know.
Given how much the iPod touch and iPhone have been hurting Nintendo's DS sales, we're likely going to have to wait until the Japanese game company stops making hardware altogether to see a real Mario franchise appear on iOS. Until then (and until someone at Cupertino wakes up to an irritated email), you'll have this game. Honestly I'm not wasting the 99-cents on it, as the reviews clearly point out the controls are atrocious. You can't have a decent platformer if the controls aren't responsive, I don't care how gussied up to look like a Nintendo rip-off it may be.
Get it while it still exists, which will probably be a few more hours. They didn't even bother to change Mario's appearance!

Apple lays out $11 billion in purchase commitments
Many out there think Apple should go on an acquisition spree with its $65.8 billion in cash. Others think that Apple should issue a dividend to its shareholders. I tend to agree with the first line of thought (especially when it comes to buying patent portfolios), but at this moment in time, it's good that Apple has been sitting on all that cash on hand.
As All Things D points out, Apple has upped its purchase commitments an astounding 39 percent to $11 billion. The increase in purchase commitments will allow Apple to secure supply chain investments, such as critical components for the iPad 2 and future iPhones. Demand for hot components, like flash memory and touchscreens, has soared in recent years thanks to the glut of smartphones hitting the market. If any company wants to stay ahead, it needs to make sure that it can actually build any killer products that it comes up with.
This is where Apple's massive amount of cash comes in handy. When shortages do occur, such as what happened after the Japan tsunami, Apple doesn't have to mess around with securing loans to lock down components. As Tim Cook said at Apple's financial conference call last week, "The iPad has the mother of all backlogs, but we're working very hard to get [it] out to customers as quickly as we can." Having all that available cash on hand will enable Apple to keep up with demand where other, "poorer" tech companies may not be able to.Apple lays out $11 billion in purchase commitments originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 26 Apr 2011 19:30:00 EST. Acer ZGB Chrome OS notebook details emerge
Google has been working on Chrome for a while now and has sent out notebooks to reviewers in the past to check out the OS. The machines that went out weren’t about the hardware at all, the OS was the focus. There are doubts as to whether or not Google will be able to offer a compelling notebook OS that consumers will be interested it. Those same doubts were around when Android first surfaced and eventually the Android OS bloomed and is very popular today. Google undoubtedly hopes the same will happen with Chrome.
Last week we learned that Google OS notebook would be offered by subscription at up to $20 monthly rather than for straight purchase. Whether this will be only for notebooks straight from Google or for all machines running the OS is unknown. A notebook from Acer has surfaced again called the ZGB that runs Chrome. The machine was spied in a bug repot that was filed a few hours ago by Macles. The report offers up a bit of info that allows insight into the hardware the machine might run.
We know the screen resolution is 1366 x 768, which is common. The last line of the report offers insight into the hardware inside the machine that we didn?t have before. The line lists a LVDS to HDMI encoder by Chrontel that is used to support HDMI out in Intel Atom-based notebooks. Macles points out that the AMD fusion APU supports HDMI directly so Intel Atom is the only hardware around right now that uses that encoder. It seems we are looking at nothing but another of the same notebooks with Chrome as the only differentiator.

Blast from the past: Steve Jobs talks location privacy issues
With Locationgate hitting a frenzy, All Things D has gone back and cut a new video of Steve Jobs and Google mobile boss Andy Rubin talking about privacy and location tracking on mobile phones. The footage comes from the D8 Conference last June and at D: Dive Into Mobile in December.
At All Things Digital, Jobs told Mossberg that Apple takes location data very seriously and that he believe privacy means that "people know what they're signing up for." Check out the collection of clips on the next page (word of warning, AllThingsD only provides the clip in Flash -- sorry, iOS readers). The insights are quite interesting given the current climate over location tracking.Continue reading Blast from the past: Steve Jobs talks location privacy issuesBlast from the past: Steve Jobs talks location privacy issues originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 26 Apr 2011 20:00:00 EST. Protect Your iPad 2 With Quirky?s Fender Bumper
When compared to the Motorola XOOM’s pricing, an iPad 2 may seem like a bargain, but it’s still not a cheap investment by any means. Starting at $499 for the lowest end model, your iPad 2 certainly deserves some extra loving care. The new Fender iPad 2 bumper from Quirky can be a good option that is not only affordable but is also designed to work perfectly with Apple’s Smart Covers.
The Smart Covers do a good job of protecting the front side, but leaves your iPad 2 exposed on the back. Fender provides a clear plastic shield for the backside along with rubber bumpers on each corner. It is made of clear frosted ABS plastic with gray rubber corners and a thin gray rubber border on the back side. It snaps in place to fit on the iPad 2 and doesn’t fully encase the device.
Hence, it works in tandem with Apple’s Smart Covers with strategic cut-outs on the side for the Smart Cover to properly attach and function. It is currently listed at $18 and is available for pre-orders only on Quirky. It will be available once it hits their presale threshold to qualify for production.

Qualcomm?s Next-Gen Snapdragon Chip Details Leaked
A Qualcomm presentation was leaked that reveals its plans for the next-generation Snapdragon processors. The company is quite ambitious, suggesting that it would not only beat existing ARM Cortex A9 chips currently used in devices such as the iPad 2 and the Motorola XOOM, but that it would also beat future Cortex A15 chips by the time its new chip architecture arrives later this year.
The MSM8270, MSM8930, MSM8960, and APQ8064 are all based on Qualcomm’s new CPU architecture called Krait. The new chip will be made on a 28 nanometer process and run at speeds up to 2.5GHz, with almost 23 percent more computing power than the Cortex A15 and using 47 percent less power for the same performance. The chip is expected to have speeds up to five times faster than its predecessor in raw CPU power and four times faster when it comes to graphics for “console quality gaming.” It will be able to support not only 1080p and 3D video, but also 7.1-channel Dolby Surround and up to a 20-megapixel camera.
The MSM8960 has built-in 3G and LTE-based 4G hardware and will ship out to companies for testing by end of Spring. The rest of the Snapdragon chips will be shipped by the end of the year, with actual products utilizing the chip depending on when the device manufacturers are ready. This means we could be seeing the chips in mobile devices by 2012.

DROID Charge unboxing and hands-on
It’s pretty good timing for Verizon’s DROID Charge by Samsung to arrive today, just when our Samsung Galaxy S II review goes live. Both smartphones share a couple of important features, most notably the 4.3-inch WVGA Super AMOLED Plus display. Unlike the previous AMOLED and Super AMOLED technology, the new Super AMOLED Plus allows you to see the display much better out in sunlight thanks to 50-percent more sub-pixels (this means twelve sub-pixels instead of eight). Looking at the display makes us want to weep like a 12-year old boy on Christmas morning. The Droid Charge has LTE to differentiate it, the second 4G smartphone to Verizon’s line-up. Read on for our first-impressions.
Although the display may be the same as on the Galaxy S II, the DROID Charge is otherwise a more mainstream device. No sign of a dual-core processor, with the 1GHz chip we’re familiar with from the Galaxy S line making do instead. It’s running Android 2.2 Froyo with TouchWiz on top, and we’re disappointed to see the older OS in place. We’ll be judging how much that impacts the handset in the full SlashGear review.
Also like the Galaxy S is the shiny, plasticky chassis, though the angular shape is distinctive. It?s super lightweight, which is one thing we love from Samsung?s line of Galaxy Android phones. The four Android buttons are very low on the fascia, which can make hitting them while holding the phone in the same hand tricky, though you do get a dedicated search key unlike other recent Samsung?s. On the back there’s an 8-megapixel camera with LED-flash while up front is a 1.3-megapixel camera.
Performance seems adequate if not hugely impressive like the Galaxy S II powered by a set of 1.2Ghz processor, and we’re beginning to wonder whether the DROID Charge’s $300 price tag is really worth it, or just exaggerated by what Verizon thinks it can get for its LTE connectivity. Our final opinion – along with performance, speed tests and battery results – will have to wait for the full SlashGear review, so until then enjoy the hands-on video!

Motorola promises unlocked bootloaders for future Android phones? (update)
Android users have spoken, and maybe, just maybe, Motorola actually heard -- AusDroid claims to have a statement direct from the mobile phone manufacturer promising unlocked bootloaders later this year: We completely understand the operator requirement for security to the end user, and as well, want to support the developer communities desire to use these products as a development platform. It is our intention to enable the unlockable/relockable bootloader currently found on Motorola XOOM across our portfolio of devices starting in late 2011, where carriers and operators will allow it.Wonderfully corporate of them to pass the buck to the carriers, no? This quote comes by way of a gentleman who petitioned Moto for just such a thing, mind you, so please take it with a grain of salt, and you'll be the first to know if we get confirmation from Motorola itself.
Update: AusDroid managed to get in touch with Motorola North Asia, and it sounds like we're looking at the truth -- let's see if Sanjay Jha agrees when he wakes up tomorrow morning. CE-Oh no he didn't!: BMW exec says electric vehicles 'won't work,' but would love to sell you one anyway
Jim O'Donnell, CEO and chairman of BMW North America, recently sat down with the Detroit News to discuss the ActiveE -- an electric version of BMW's 1 Series coupe, available for lease in the US this fall. Most CEOs would've probably used the opportunity to wax PR poetic about their company's bold, forward-looking ethos, because that's what CEOs do. O'Donnell, however, used the occasion to let us in on a dirty little secret: EVs don't actually work. According to O'Donnell's undoubtedly robust calculations, EVs won't work for "at least 90-percent" of the human population, at current battery ranges. The situation is so dire, in fact, that the US government shouldn't even bother wasting its $7,500 tax credits on frivolous things like innovation, national security and clean air.
"I believe in a free economy. I think we should abolish all tax credits. What they are doing is putting a bet on technology, which is not appropriate. As a taxpayer, I am not sure this is the right way to go."
O'Donnell went on to say he's "far more optimistic" about diesel's chances of increasing BMW's US market share -- because, you know, it's not like the oil industry gets any tax breaks, or anything. And it's not like diverting some money away from oil subsidies and putting it toward EV technology would create the "level playing field" that O'Donnell and his company so desperately need. No siree, the US energy market is just as pure and fair as it's always been -- and it certainly doesn't deserve to be corrupted by an EV tax credit pestilence. That said, O'Donnell would still really appreciate it if we buy the battery-powered i3 when it launches in 2013. Who knows? He may even throw in a free bridge, too.CE-Oh no he didn't!: BMW exec says electric vehicles 'won't work,' but would love to sell you one anyway originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 26 Apr 2011 08:27:00 EDT. New TweetDeck for iPhone app lands
Twitter is one of the most widely used means to communicate with friends and other followers online today. With the raging popularity of the service it’s no surprise that there are all sorts of third party clients that are used by hoards of Twitter fanatics every day rather than using Twitter directly. In fact, the use of third party Twitter clients is so widespread that Twitter decided to try and stop the proliferation of them not too long ago and claimed that the majority of users used the official Twitter app even with evidence to the contrary.
One of the most popular third party Twitter clients is TweetDeck and the app is on both the iPhone and Android platforms. TweetDeck has announced that with has a new version of the app that is available for the iPhone. The app is called TweetDeck v2.0 and it can be downloaded right now. TweetDeck says that the team took the original app and distilled it down to all of the things that made it so popular and then crated a brand new app from scratch to use all the newest and latest tech.
A few of the new features in the latest version include swiping between columns and navigation through user profiles. The new app also has improved navigation though user profiles and a new easy to use Add Column flow and pull to update animations. The app also has a cool follow/unfollow slider too. The app also offers the ability to access options with gestures like pinch. Pinch the screen and the app gives you access to options to add feeds into a column.

iPhone still tracks users when locations services are disabled, test finds
The recent rediscovery that Apple’s iPhone is tracking and storing users’ locations ? after users all agreed to let Apple track, store and use their locations, of course ? has caused quite an uproar. Unlike the last time this was discovered, the ordeal continues to make news nearly a week later instead of beingforgottenimmediately. In this latest round of outrage, The Wall Street Journal has revealed that Apple’s iPhone continues to collect and store users’ locations even when location services are disabled. The Journal believes that the data is collected using data from cell towers and Wi-Fi hotspots as the iPhone communicates with them. This, too, is well within Apple’s rights ? and the rights of other cell phone makers

Keepin' it real fake: Nckia's N-Gage knockoff harkens back to a simpler, side-talkin' era
Imagine a world where Nokia's N-Gage is the mobile platform of choice -- there's no iOS, no Android, and Nintendo's 3D ventures ended mercifully with the Virtual Boy. It's a world where the Nckia NG belongs. In our universe, a knockoff of the stillborn Nokia 7700 doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense, even with a MicroSD slot and added buttons for dialing. And then there's the fact that the handset runs a JAVA OS that doesn't exactly offer a bounty of mobile gaming choices -- which was sort of the whole point of the N-Gage. As for other familiar features, we can't be sure that this will be the rebirth of side-talkin', but with what could be a speaker slot on the side, we've got our fingers crossed. No word on pricing, but if you're truly nostalgic for a time that never was, you can pick one up from Huaqiangbei in Shenzhen. Get a closer look after the break.Continue reading Keepin' it real fake: Nckia's N-Gage knockoff harkens back to a simpler, side-talkin' eraKeepin' it real fake: Nckia's N-Gage knockoff harkens back to a simpler, side-talkin' era originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 25 Apr 2011 17:32:00 EDT. HP EliteBook 2560p laptop, 2760p convertible tablet surface in more leaked docs
We're not quite sure what it is with companies and their loose PDFs these days, but another pair of documents have now surfaced on HP's servers, which provide the complete specs and our first real look at the company's previously leaked EliteBook 2560p and 2760p. Perhaps most notably, we now for sure that the latter is indeed a convertible tablet as we had suspected, including a swiveling 12.1-inch matte display, along with your choice of Sandy Bridge Core i5 or i7 processors, up to a 320GB hard drive or 160GB SSD, a maximum 16GB of RAM, and the usual integrated Intel HD3000 graphics (no other option, unfortunately). The EliteBook 2560p, on the other hand, packs an ever so slightly larger 12.5-inch display, and some mostly similar specs across the board -- the biggest exception being up to a 750GB hard drive thanks to its 2.5-inch storage bay (versus 1.8-inch on the 2760p. Still no prices for either of them, although we've got to assume that HP will be making these completely official fairly soon.

Apple slapped with federal lawsuit over location tracking
Well, you knew this was coming. After all, suing Apple has become something of a favorite past time for individuals and companies. Bloomberg reports that two iPhone users have filed a federal lawsuit against Apple alleging invasion of privacy and computer fraud regarding the iPhone's ability to track and store cell phone tower data.
Right now details are sparse and there's no word what kind of damages the plaintiffs are seeking and Apple has not issued a statement on the lawsuit. However, with more and more "Locationgate" stories hitting the news daily, you can expect that Apple is working on, if not a solution, at least a response to the matter.
UPDATE: Bloomberg has expanded its article, quoting an attorney for the plaintiffs as saying, "We take issue specifically with the notion that Apple is now basically tracking people everywhere they go. If you are a federal marshal you have to have a warrant to do this kind of thing, and Apple is doing it without one." The plaintiffs (an iPad and iPhone user) are asking a judge to bar Apple from recording location data and a refund for their devices, saying they would not have purchased them if they had known about the location tracking in iOS.

Local TV station visits Apple's data center
A Fox affiliate in Charlotte, North Carolina took a closer look at Apple's new data center in the town of Maiden. The news story and accompanying video is rife with speculation about the intended usage of this 500,000 square-foot building.
Once you get past the references for Apple's supposed "Netflix-Killer" video streaming service, a rumor kicked off by analyst Peter Misek of Jefferies and Company, the video has some shots of the data center and pithy facts about the land Apple occupies.
The short video takes a quick tour of the land around the center and the extensive amount of property that Apple owns. Besides the 180 acres on which the data center sits, the Cupertino company also owns 70 acres right across the street. The data center only takes up one-third of the 180 acre plot, and with over 190 combined acres of land available, some are speculating Apple may be looking to build an East Coast campus.
Locals are certainly enthusiastic about this rumored opportunity. "I'm ready to get the phone call and to proceed with building anything they want," said Scott Millar, President of the Catawba County Economic Development Corporation. Read on to watch the video from the Charlotte news team.

RIM wants Blackberry PlayBook Hulu Plus access
RIM launched the Blackberry Playbook not long ago and started sending the machines out to reviewers to spend some hands on time with. We put up our review of the Playbook last week and noted that the firmware was a wreck. Chris called the firmware “half-baked” at the time he wrote about the device. One of the bright spots was that at least for a while the Playbook users could access the streaming content on Hulu.
It didn?t take long for Hulu to block access by the Playbook though and as of now users of the new tablet have no access to the Hulu streaming library just as iPad and Android users lack access too. On the iPad, the user can subscribe to Hulu Plus and download an app that will allow them to stream all of the Hulu content they want right to the iPad. The bad thing for Playbook users is that there is no app for Hulu Plus right now for them and they can’t stream the free content making Hulu fun out of reach.
RIM has announced that it is in talks with Hulu LLC about getting access to Hulu Plus paid content on the tablet for the buyers to view. The Hulu Plus service costs users about $8 monthly. A RIM spokesperson told the WSJ, “We are in conversations with Hulu to bring the Hulu Plus subscription service to BlackBerry PlayBook users.” So far, there is no word on when or if the Hulu Plus access will come to the Playbook.

Firefox 4 tops 100 million downloads
Launched on March 22nd, Mozilla's Firefox 4 has become a rockstar, topping 100 million downloads earlier this morning.
The numbers come via Mozilla's "Glow" stats ticker page, which has been updating the downloads since launch. You can check that page here: Firefox 4 Downloads
StatCounter (via Crunch), says Firefox 4 already has 8 percent of the worldwide browser market share, behind more established IE8 at 30 percent, Firefox 3.6 at 24.43 percent and Chrome 10 at 15.35 percent.
Microsoft recently released Internet Explorer 9, a complete overhaul of their previous browsers, and Google has released betas of Chrome 11, which adds HTML5 speech input, allowing users to talk into their mics and have the browser type out what you are saying (great for hands-free searches).

Microsoft confirms Mango will be branded as Windows Phone 7.5
When it comes to the branding of the Mobile phone operating systems that are on the market, today the companies handle what they call the new flavors differently. Apple simply changes the number on its iOS to match a new update. Google on the other hand makes a big deal out of new statues to go along with the Android OS that are named after desserts. Microsoft has now confirmed that its next version of the Windows Phone OS, called Mango bringing the OS to 7.5, will be called Windows Phone 7.5.
I wonder if going forward that Microsoft will use fruit for the codename of its Mobile OS offerings. We mentioned early in March that Mango could possibly slip to a 2012 launch and that slip could delay Nokia’s launch plans. The software giant noted that the new OS is due later this year. We don?t have a firm time line on the 7.5 version right now. However, we do know that Nokia is waiting until around October to start offering Windows Phone devices.
That October date looks likely for Mango to land despite previous indications of delays. Winrumros reports that Windows Phone Marketing VP Achim Berg said that the updates in the new Mango version are significant enough to warrant a point update. Mango is expected to have multitasking, IE9 mobile, Twitter, and more. Microsoft will also reportedly expand on dev opportunities with the new OS as well and expand the market for Mango to 35 countries.

Microsoft and Nokia Finalize Agreement
Microsoft and Nokia today announced that they've agreed to the broad terms and finer details concerning Nokia's use of Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform in its future smartphones. The companies said they already have a product roadmap looking ahead several years, and they are hoping to ship their first WP7 device by the end of the year. Neither expects volume shipments of Nokia WP7 devices until 2012, though. The companies said they'll be working to bring WP7 to "new geographies" and at "new price points" in order to spur adoption. In the mean time, Nokia will continue to ship smartohones running Symbian and integrate Microsoft's cloud features over time. (follow link to read)
White iPhone 4 in Europe from April 27 says source
At this stage, it’s the final countdown for the white iPhone 4 – a case of “when” not “if” – and SlashGear has just been tipped with further evidence that the white smartphone will arrive midway through next week. A trusted tipster passed us a screenshot from a retail system in the Netherlands, which confirms that T-Mobile there will be offering the white iPhone 4 from Wednesday, April 27.
However, the document also warns that there are very limited supplies of the white variant, and as such only limited stock of the 16GB model is on offer. If stores sell out, they’re being instructed to inform would-be buyers that it will be a wait of 4-5 weeks.
It’s unclear whether that precarious stock level is unique to this one, particular carrier, or if Apple’s stocks overall are low. Demand for the white iPhone 4 is expected to be strong, even this far through the handset’s life-cycle, and so we’re expecting quite the rush next week. Meanwhile, we’re also expecting to see more than T-Mobile offer the phone, at least generally across Europe.

New radio wave technique could detect alien planets, receive interstellar tunes
Any experienced planet hunter will tell you: finding exoplanets is the real challenge, where hardened professionals go to test their mettle. These tricky bodies stymie conventional methods - like seeing a planet pass in front of its parent star - because exoplanets often have decades-long orbits, meaning you could spend a lot of lonely nights fruitlessly searching the skies. So scientists at the University of Leicester in England developed a new approach: looking for radio waves emitted when ultraviolet flares light up the atmospheres of planets like Saturn and Jupiter. The flares - auroras - even if invisible to ordinary telescopes, are detectable by radio telescopes like the European Low Frequency Array (or LOFAR, pictured above). The scientists hope those methods will help them discover planetary systems up to 150 light-years away, perhaps even some that can sustain life. And, of course, keep them one step ahead of Richard Branson.

White iPhone 4 available from Apple and Best Buy on April 27th?
We’d already heard mumblings that the white iPhone 4 would launch on the 27th, and now leaked photos of Best Buy’s internal stocking systems are solidifying those rumors. While the above screenshot only says “AT&T hardware,” 9to5 Mac suggests that Verizon Wireless’ CDMA version of the phone will also be available on the same day. Store are already stocking the devices for Wednesday’s launch, but there could be as few as ten 16GB and 32GB models per Best Buy location. Additionally, it’s being reported elsewhere that Apple stores have received promotional materials featuring the white iPhone 4, and should be receiving stock starting tomorrow. Hit the jump for another inventory shot. Read

Gameloft launches N.O.V.A. Elite on Facebook, demonstrates the ubiquity of Unity
It turns out N.O.V.A. Elite isn't one of the three new iOS games that Gameloft has licensed the Unreal Engine for. In fact, it's not an iOS game at all. Instead, Gameloft has decided to bring its popular science-fiction shooter franchise to Facebook as a competitive multiplayer 3D shooter tied to your social network and running on the Unity engine.
While the core style of the earlier N.O.V.A. games is still the same in N.O.V.A. Elite, it has also picked up many of the features you've probably come to expect from any free-to-play Facebook game, including friends invitations and purchasable upgrades. That's right, if you want to have all the best gear, you'll need to pull out your wallet and exchange real money for Facebook Credits. Don't worry though, they aren't required to play.
If you don't mind the free-to-play model, there's a lot to like about Elite. The pace is fast, and I found the gameplay smooth and satisfying, even on dated hardware. The graphics are adequately impressive for a browser-based game, but they are more comparable to N.O.V.A. 2 running on an iPad than a modern native PC or console game.Continue reading Gameloft launches N.O.V.A. Norio Ohga, former Sony chairman and multimedia pioneer, dies at 81
There's more sad news out of Japan this morning, we're afraid -- Sony is reporting that former chairman Norio Ohga passed away in Tokyo yesterday from multiple organ failure. He was 81. You may not personally remember a Sony under his reign -- Ohga directly helmed the company from 1982 to 1995 after decades of service in product planning -- but Norio Ohga was arguably the man responsible for turning Sony from a high-profile analog electronics manufacturer into a digital multimedia conglomerate. He helmed the deals that formed Sony Music, paved the way for Sony Pictures and established the very same Sony Computer Entertainment that would birth the PlayStation, and it was he who pushed the optical compact disc standard that all but replaced the magnetic cassettes and diskettes that held portable media. Without him, DVDs and Blu-rays might have fallen by the wayside, and that's another thought that brings tears to our eyes. You'll find Ohga's official obituary after the break.Continue reading Norio Ohga, former Sony chairman and multimedia pioneer, dies at 81Norio Ohga, former Sony chairman and multimedia pioneer, dies at 81 originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 23 Apr 2011 12:53:00 EDT. Slow Photography
David McCourt is a photographer from the UK. He noticed that current mobile phones are getting better and better. The tiniest cameras in the latest smartphones have the resolution of the most expensive D-SLR’s from just a few years ago. The problem here is that people are getting interested in photography without understanding the basic principles of composition, framing, and lens selection. The Slow Photography camera is a middleground between an expensive D-SLR and the point-and-shoot smartphone cameras.
To operate the Slow Photography camera, simply slip your phone into the slot for it and then select your lens by rotating the selection wheel. David included three lenses, a fixed focal length, macro, and fisheye. Then you look through the viewfinder on top to frame your shot and release the shutter.
Here’s a collection of images showcasing the action of David’s prototype. Can you tell which pictures come from which lens? I’m not entirely sure, but I’m not really a photographer.

Huawei and Panasonic join MeeGo?
Despite founding partner Nokia leaving the mobile operating system for dead, it appears there is still interest in the Linux-based mobile OS MeeGo.
Last week we reported that LG Electronics was looking to adopt the OS for some lower-end smartphones, with discussions already underway.
Furthermore, ZTE and China Mobile were also said to be looking to help develop a handset with the OS.
Today, insiders are saying Huawei and Panasonic are joining the Handset Working Group, making sure the OS does not die.

Some spiffy cases for your Square credit card reader
As we noted last week, the Square credit card reader is now available in Apple Stores all around the country -- you buy the reader for $9.95, but get a $10 credit when you do so, so the only charges are what you rack up when actually accepting credit card payments. As we've said before, it's a pretty easy way to use cards, whether you just need money from a friend or have a small business that only occasionally takes payments.
But that reader is tiny and easily lost, so what's the best way to keep track of it? A special case, of course. Unpluggd has a few options for keychain cases built specifically to hold that little widget, from $10 up to the excellent case above for $25. Yes, it might seem a little strange to spend that much on a case for something that you essentially got for free. But if it helps you keep track of the reader and have it right there on hand when you need to take a big payment, it'll be worth it, right? Some spiffy cases for your Square credit card reader originally appeared on TUAW on Sat, 23 Apr 2011 08:00:00 EST. Sprint Google Voice invites arriving early
Sprint has begun sending out invites for its Google Voice integration, which allows subscribers to use their existing Sprint number as a Google Voice number. Although not expected to go broadly live until April 26, anAndroid Central writerwas among the pre-registered users invited to try the service out early.
The whole process sounds relatively well thought-through. Existing Google Voice users get three months access to their previous number, so that they won’t miss any calls in the changeover, while MMS messages – which Google Voice doesn’t yet support – bypass the service altogether, dropping into the phone’s inbox as normal.
Google’s voicemail system is also used, rather than the standard Sprint voicemail. Although Android devices will probably get the most use out of the new functionality – given the Google Voice app available in the Android Market – the integration will be offered to all Sprint subscribers.

Ford makes list of the 25 most EV-friendly cities, still likes selling cars to residents elsewhere
So, you saw a Volt, Leaf, or Focus Electric and were convinced to go green, but are unsure whether your local municipality is as eco-friendly as you are. Well, Ford has done your homework for you (without even demanding your lunch money in return), and identified the "25 Most Electric Vehicle-Ready Cities" in the US. What makes a metropolis worthy of such status in the eyes of the Blue Oval boys? A utilities structure that allows off-peak charging, for starters, plus reduced red tape for getting your EV permits and inspections, incentives for offsetting up-front customer costs, urban plans for charging infrastructure, and EV-friendly city advisory committees. If your town's lacking in those areas, perhaps it's time to give your city council a ring -- part of being an eco-warrior is political activism, right? PR's after the break.Continue reading Ford makes list of the 25 most EV-friendly cities, still likes selling cars to residents elsewhereFord makes list of the 25 most EV-friendly cities, still likes selling cars to residents elsewhere originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 22 Apr 2011 20:19:00 EDT.
