Watch this iPhone get dunked in a goldfish bowl
It's the weekend, and what better time to watch somebody try to destroy an iPhone than that? After the break below, you can watch video of a presentation at this week's Launch Conference in San Francisco, in which LifeProof, a company that makes iPhone cases built to withstand the elements, dunks said iPhone in said goldfish tank. They also put condiments all over it, cover it in dirt, and just generally make a mess, all to prove that their iPhone case can protect against whatever gets thrown at it.
The case itself is $69.95, which is a little pricey, but LifeProof of course says that replacing the iPhone completely is much more expensive. I'd suggest that if your iPhone is getting dunked in water or covered in dirt, it might be better to just leave it at home (although I guess there are certain jobs that require a smartphone in less-than-ideal conditions). At any rate, even if you don't need a case that can withstand a tornado, the video below (the demo starts around 1:40) is an entertaining watch.Continue reading Watch this iPhone get dunked in a goldfish bowlWatch this iPhone get dunked in a goldfish bowl originally appeared on TUAW on Sat, 26 Feb 2011 08:30:00 EST. Adding fuel to the fire: "We'll also support Android apps" heard during PlayBook demo at MWC
[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]
These days we've been hearing plenty of rumors about Research In Motions BlackBerry PlayBook having the ability to run Google's Android application. Whether or not it turns out to be true remains to been seen but the evidence is mounting at a rapid pace. While Mobile World Congress brought us some information surrounding the BlackBerry PlayBook and we did get to see some cool demos overall, not much more then what was already known was revealed in Barcelona -- or was it?
The above is of course a YouTube video that was sent into us. At first glance it just appears to be a normal walkthrough of the BlackBerry PlayBook. Nothing different from each and every other demo that was given during Mobile World Congress. However, the details are in the audio for this one. While the background noise is heavy if you pay attention around the 0:14 second mark the person giving the demo clearly states, "We'll also support Android apps". That's a pretty bold statement to be making during Mobile World Congress without some sort of information being known to back it up. Is it confirmation? No, not exactly. But why would that even slip out if there was no basis for it?

Keydex: The Ugliest iPad ?Keyboard? Ever?
The only part of the Sanwa Keydex iPad stand that won’t melt your eyes due to its sheer ugliness is the keyboard — and that’s because it doesn’t come with one. Instead, you have to supply your own iPad Keyboard Dock. And that’s where the pointlessness of this accessory starts to become clear. To fully [...]
Gameduino: Arduino For Gamers
Arduino seems like a great way to create interactive devices but historically it hasn't been too hot for creating the ultimate in interactivity, computer gaming. That changed with the release of the Gameduino, a version of the open-source Arduino board pre-loaded with games, sprites, and inputs for various game controllers.
The Gameduino is an open source project and the creator has build a Kickstarter page to fund the actual production of the device.

TazPad packs Android, NFC, and ZigBee for CeBIT 2011 debut
If you are looking for a new tablet computer CeBIT 2011 is right around the corner and you can bet there will be many tablets that debut at the show. One of the tablets that we know will be seen at the show is from a company called TazTag and is dubbed the TazPad.
The tablet is claimed to be the first Android tablet with NFC on the market. The TazPad has a 7-inch screen that supports multitouch and has Full HD support and HDMI output. The TazPad also features WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, and ZigBee.
Other features include a camera, GPS, and an accelerometer. The tablet is set to ship in Q2 and we don?t have any other specs or pricing details at this time. I wonder what CPU and version of Android the tablet runs.

iMainGo X iPhone / iPod speaker system cranks the volume up to 11
When it comes to portable speaker systems that work with the iPhone and various flavors of iPod, the iMainGo 2 (US$39.95) from Portable Sound Laboratories has been an inexpensive and powerful favorite of many Apple fans. Now the company is turning up the volume -- literally -- with a new version known as the iMainGo X ($69.95).
What It Is:
Like the previous version, the iMainGo X is a deceptively simple box that looks like a large clutch case for an iPhone or iPod touch. One half of the case is made up of the tech -- a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery pack, the speakers, and the electronics -- while the other half holds your device behind a waterproof shield. The rechargeable battery pack is a solid improvement over the 4 AAA batteries that were required with the iMainGo 2. They don't last as long (12 hours as opposed to 30 hours for the AAA batteries), but will save you money in the long run over the disposable batteries.
The iMainGo X also has slightly larger bass speakers as well as the ability to daisy-chain up to three of the devices for loud surround sound. It does this through the addition of another headset port on the front of the box, which can be used to connect your iMainGo X up to two more devices.

HTC Thunderbolt Available Online But Can?t Checkout
With the HTC Thunderbolt release once again postponed, it seems fans are getting antsy and a little crazy. One fan has taken it upon himself to figure out a way on HTC’s online store to force the listed device into his shopping cart even though he could not checkout. He was then kind enough to share his process and even offer up the below screenshot as proof of his deed.
The device is already listed on the HTC online store, but is shown as unavailable and therefore cannot be added to the online shopping cart. The anonymous fan was able to get the item to show up in the shopping cart by some method of copying and pasting of the url address and then changing the item number.
Below are his own words:
Go to HTC?s online store, go to any product detail page. ?Copy link address? for the ?Add to cart? link. Paste to the address bar, change product ID to 38411, submit. You?ll be taken to an HTC Incredible page, but when you click to view your ?Cart,? you?ll have an HTC Thunderbolt there for $699.99. However, you can?t check out due to no plans being available for this phone.

RIM, Bank of America partnering up for Mobile Wallet NFC trial
We've known for some time that RIM is going all-in on NFC (isn't everyone?), but we didn't realize they were going retroactive, too. A NFC payment trial coming up involving RIM and Bank of America will allow selected testers to get an NFC-capable back for their Curve 8520 or 8530, Tour 9630, or Bold 9000, 9650, or 9700 -- in other words, most of the company's portrait QWERTY models from the last couple years. You'll also need an active Bank of America account, at which point you'll be able to tap your 'Berry on NFC terminals to get your pay on. The trial starts this spring; no word on when it might be open to everyone.

Google Getting Strict With Android Market, Pulls VoiceMail App For In-App Payment Issues
Google is flexing its muscles with the Android Market as it just pulled one of its most popular and long standing apps, Visual VoiceMail, citing violations of the Developer Content Policy. PhoneFusion, the company behind the app, says the suspension came without warning after more than two years of being on the market and even being a featured app at one time. The company believes that their app, which has been downloaded one million times, may have been targeted for not processing in-app payments via Google Checkout.
When PhoneFusion contacted Google about the suspension, the Android Team replied with an email stating that the company had violated section 3.3 of the Android Market Developer Distribution Agreement involving pricing and payments. The sections states: “If you want to collect fees after the free trial expires, you must collect all fees for the full version of the Product through the Payment Processor on the Market. In this Agreement, ?free? means there are no charges or fees of any kind for use of the Product. All fees received by Developers for Products distributed via the Market must be processed by the Market?s Payment Processor.”
“It looks like they’re pulling an Apple but just for us,” said Jonathan Hollander, EVP of PhoneFusion. ?There was no warning that they?re going to enforce this, which make it worse than Apple. Even if you disagree with Apple, they gave until June to remove their apps. Here, there?s no choice.?
The Visual Voicemail app is a free app that generates revenue from premium add-on features purchased through their own website much like how Amazon links to its own site for Kindle purchases. Hollander believes that Visual Voicemail may have been singled out because it directly competes with Google’s Android voicemail system as well as Google Voice. The company says that Google did not give them any other options to rectify the situation except to re-upload a new app. But by doing this, the company would lose its Visual Voicemail name and all previous ratings and comments in the Android Market.

Windows Phone 7 coming to Verizon in March, starting with HTC 7 Trophy?
With Sprint starting up its Windows Phone 7 adventure on March 20th with the HTC Arrive, Verizon is now said to be matching its CDMA competitor with its own offering, the HTC 7 Trophy. We already knew this particular handset would be coming to this particular network in "early 2011," but now WinRumors has narrowed that down to a launch at some point in late March. Verizon's announcement is expected as early as February 28th, this coming Monday, and we're hearing the NoDo update -- the one with copy and paste -- should be preloaded on the device from the start. Should this solid-sounding rumor bear out as foretold, Microsoft should finally be on all US carriers by the start of April.

The case for an Apple stock split redux
Just about a year ago I wrote a post explaining all the hoopla over an expected AAPL stock split which never happened. At that point AAPL shares were trading at $202.86 and many felt that it was just too expensive for most small investors to buy.
Last week, Apple closed at $348.14 after a few weeks of a roller coaster ride taking the stock down from a 52 week high of $364.90. No one really knows why the fairly quick drop happened. Rumors covered everything from the health of Steve Jobs and the question of a succession plan, to delays of the iPhone 5 and the iPad 2; but the fact of the matter is that an annual increase in price of around $145 ain't chopped liver.
The vast majority of AAPL stockholders are investment firms, with the little guy being mostly left out due to the high stock price. It's emotionally unsatisfying to buy a handful of shares, and with only five or six shares in your portfolio the profit potential is decreased. That's mostly emotions talking, but the market is strongly influenced by emotions like fear, excitement and greed. So what would happen if Apple decided to split its stock anywhere from two to one, up to a four to one split?
AAPL has split two for one three times, in 1987, 2000, and 2005 -- but it hasn't happened in the last six years. Philip Elmer-DeWitt writing for Fortune's Apple 2.0 posed an argument asking if the time is right. He made a reasoned case both for and against splitting.Continue reading The case for an Apple stock split reduxThe case for an Apple stock split redux originally appeared on TUAW on Sun, 27 Feb 2011 14:00:00 EST. Rumors put Windows Phone devices on Verizon?s network in late March
Accordingto information acquired by WinRumors, Verizon Wireless will begin to sell Windows Phone handsets towards the end of March. The device will have Microsoft’s “NoDo” update (also known as the copy and paste update) and should retail for $199.99 with a signed two-year contract. Intel Oak Trail Atom Z670 tablets to arrive at the end of March
Intel's spent the last nine months prepping its Oak Trail silicon to improve the battery life and performance of Windows 7 tablets, and come the end of next month we should finally have some slates with the new 1.5GHz Atom Z670 chip inside. While Fudzilla has heard that the tablets will hit in the general March time frame, the eagle-eyed guys at Netbook News spotted the Fujitsu Stylistic Q550 press materials stating that the new platform will launch on March 30, 2011. That seems to line up with what we've heard on timing, since both the Oak Trail-powered Samsung Sliding PC 7 and MSI WindPad 100W were announced with March availability. Chances are we will hear more about it all at CeBIT next week, but honestly, at this point we're just really eager to get one of these in our hands to see what Chipzilla's really improved.Intel Oak Trail Atom Z670 tablets to arrive at the end of March originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 25 Feb 2011 18:43:00 EDT. HTC Desire HD, Desire Z, Desire and Incredible S Gingerbread update in Q2
HTC has confirmed its next batch of Android updates, with Android Honeycomb coming through the pipe for some of the most popular devices of the past few months. An HTC spokesperson told SlashGear that “We are excited to announce that the Desire HD, Desire Z, Desire and Incredible S will receive the Gingerbread update in Q2.”
The news will come as a relief to HTC Desire owners, who have already seen their handsets updated once before – from the Android 2.1 the smartphone launched with, to Android 2.2 Froyo – and faced the prospect of the phone being left behind after the Desire S announced at MWC 2011 last week. The Desire HD is several months old (as is the Desire Z), and is expected to be replaced later in 2011 with the dual-core smartphone believed to be codenamed the HTC Pyramid.
Finally, the HTC Incredible S was only announced last week, and the only device of HTC’s MWC launch that came with Froyo pre-installed rather than Gingerbread. The HTC-made Google Nexus One is currently being updated to Gingerbread as well.

Finally, the HTC Incredible S was only announced last week, and the only device of HTC’s MWC launch that came with Froyo pre-installed rather than Gingerbread. The HTC-made Google Nexus One is currently being updated to Gingerbread as well.

Details on BlackBerry Internet Service 4.0 leaked
The next progression in BIS-land is 4.0 and it looks like we have some good updates to look forward to. N4BB snagged a doc that shows off the upcoming features of the latest BIS. As usual it's not a ton of little upgrades, but rather a few mid-sized ones. Updates look to include:
Integration with BlackBerry ID (BBID)
Improved BIS End User Communications
Automatic Login improvements
Support for new service tiers
Google Calendar Improvements
No official date for release just yet but it doesn't seem like it would be too far off. Typically the rollout seems to happen over a few weeks to various carriers and we get no real word of a launch. Overall some pretty good stuff in this update. Hit the source link for more info.

It's almost March and that can only mean one thing, CrackBerry's 4th Birthday. To celebrate, the good folks over at SOTI, Inc. are having a 50% off sale from now until Friday March 4th. So what works with FaceTime?
Apple comes to the rescue with a KnowledgeBase posting that will give you all the details on what systems are capable of using FaceTime. As you may know, FaceTime HD is a new feature of the just released MacBook Pro line, and Apple has taken FaceTime for the rest of us out of beta and made it a US $0.99 app.
While the HD feature of FaceTime is built into the just-released laptops because of an updated higher resolution camera, it doesn't mean those with older equipment are out of the game. Apple says you need Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or above to send a standard definition call. Many, but not all older Macs can view a call in HD, but Apple says it requires a minimum download bandwidth of 1 Mbps.
Check out the specifics after the break.

BlackBerry smartphones already running Android apps?!
Yes, we've all heard the rumors about the BlackBerry PlayBook possibly having the ability to run Android apps but have you heard that BlackBerry smartphones are already running them? If the data from ShopSavvy is in anyway accurate then they'd have you believe it's already happening. As noted on their blog they have been tracking devices checking out their services via Flurry, an analytics service and according what they found within that is that at least three BlackBerry devices have been running their Android app:
BlackBerry 8300 ran ShopSavvy on January 31, 2011
BlackBerry 8600 ran ShopSavvy on January 17 and 24, 2011
BlackBerry 8520 ran ShopSavvy on February 7, 2011
That's all fine and dandy but -- what is a BlackBerry 8600? Previously and during testing, the BlackBerry Curve 9300 was named the BlackBerry 8600 but that has long since been changed as the device came to market. So that really only leaves a few conclusions. Either RIM is working on making Android apps run on the BlackBerry Platform and they are using a really old pre-release BlackBerry for testing or -- someone is having some fun with messing around with their browser identification strings and making it look as though they are using a BlackBerry device when indeed, they are not.

Motorola XOOM taken down to screws by ifixit, dubbed ?easy to repair?
A device isn’t really released until the gang over at ifixit have torn it limb from limb, am I right? Today’s victim: the Motorola XOOM tablet. After several hours and 57 screws, the ifixit team have given the XOOM an 8 out of 10 rating on ease of repair (10 being the easiest). The site notes that the “LCD and front panel glass are not fused together” — making for easy glass-break repairs — and that “individual components are separately attached to the motherboard, allowing each component to be replaced on an individual basis.” Ifixit does caution that due to the fact that there are over fifty screws, repairs, while easy, do require quite a bit of labor. Verizon's dropped 911 calls leave one woman trapped in burning house (video)
We're just hearing of a story that makes that 10,000 or so emergency calls that didn't go through over Verizon's network on January 26 look a little more serious. A house in Silver Spring, Maryland caught fire that evening during the snowstorm that knocked out power and landlines. A neighbor, noticing the house was ablaze, tried calling 911 on his cellphone but couldn't get through. Thankfully he was able to save the 94 year old woman who was trapped inside, but it would be about 30 minutes of repeated dialing before finally being connected to emergency services. Thank goodness for heroes, but maybe Verizon Guy has some work to do himself.Continue reading Verizon's dropped 911 calls leave one woman trapped in burning house (video)Verizon's dropped 911 calls leave one woman trapped in burning house (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 25 Feb 2011 11:07:00 EDT. Android Market adds e-books; movies and music soon to come?
The Android world's been a-buzz this last week over a few new Android Market URLS, including http://market.android.com/music/ and http://market.android.com/movies/. In case you thought there was nothing to this tip, guess again: the third member of this trifecta (http://market.android.com/books/) has gone live. That's right, visitors to the Android Market can pick up Glenn Beck's mile-a-minute thrill ride The Overton Window for a mere $9. We hope that takes some of the sting out of the fact that a Google Music launch wasn't part of this month's Honeycomb event -- although if we had to wager a guess, we'd say that the company will have Music and Movie offerings soon enough.Android Market adds e-books; movies and music soon to come? originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 18:33:00 EDT. Motorola?s Weird Xoom Ad: Now in English!
No habla espanol? Then you’ve come to the right place for a good old fashioned AMERICAN tablet ad. Actually, it’s the same Xoom ad that popped up yesterday in Spanish. Since this is now an English-language ad, the narrator sounds vaguely constipated and the tiniest bit furious. Both ads feature a well-dressed male model who bears absolutely no resemblance to anyone you are likely to find playing on a tablet computer on a pier in the middle of the night.
The ad is pretty much standard Android fare. Boy meets hovering tablet in an unlikely location, boy touches tablet, boy is enveloped by crazy alien pod. The pod appears to be a spacecraft from the new game Vendetta. If that’s the same space shooter Motorola was showing off at MWC 2011, it looks a hell of a lot like Jumpgate made love to Wing Commander.
That’s a positive comment, in case you can’t tell.
Anyway, if you too want the chance to be enveloped by a gigantic metal pod while wearing a fashionable leather flight suit, order a Motorola Xoom today. They’re $600 on contract or just $800 unsubsidised. Yeah “just” may not be the best word for that. But hey, what are your options? Buy another Honeycomb tablet?

iFixit tears down the new 15-inch MacBook Pro, 2011 model
iFixit got its hands on a brand new 15-inch MacBook and tore the machine down to its Tri-wing screws and heat sinks. The latest generation machine shares a lot of similarities with its aluminum unibody predecessors including the same case design and a similar layout of internal components. Most of the changes internally were made to the logic board components.
Besides the obvious processor and GPU differences, iFixit notes the wireless card now sports four antennas instead of a three which may improve performance. Other minor changes include the addition of a few extra heat sinks, including one for the GPU, a SuperDrive with a new model number and some modifications to the clips which hold things in place. Click through to check out more goodies from the iFixit teardown.Continue reading iFixit tears down the new 15-inch MacBook Pro, 2011 modeliFixit tears down the new 15-inch MacBook Pro, 2011 model originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 25 Feb 2011 11:00:00 EST. Official: iPad 2 launch on March 2nd
Apple has begun sending out invites for an iPad 2 launch event on March 2nd, confirming recent rumors.
The event will be at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts at 10:00 am, the same venue used for multiple launches in the past few years.
It is unclear what will be upgraded for the iPad 2, but most reports have the tablet adding a dual-core CPU, updated GPU, dual cameras and a slimmer form factor.
The invite teases "Come see what 2011 will be the year of," although arguably 2010 was the year of the iPad, with the tablet crushing all sales estimates on route to 15 million units sold. Apple is expected to sell 40 million iPad/iPad 2 units this year even as it faces increased competition from Android, WebOS and BlackBerry tablets, all of which will make their true debuts this year.
John Gruber of Daring Fireball subtly noted last month that Apple may be moving to a 6-month release schedule for their popular iPad tablet, meaning the iPad 3 could be ready by the end of the year, as well.Permalink | Comments

Ohio Girl Scouts accepting mobile payments for cookies, your thin mint craving starts now
Short on cash but wishing you could stock up on Girl Scout cookies? Then you no longer have an excuse -- at least if you're in Northeast Ohio -- and as the local Girl Scout group there has teamed up with Intuit to accept credit cards using the company's GoPayment app (and accompanying card reader) for iOS and Android. What's more, while the Ohio group is the first to sign up, Intuit is now also extending the same offer (which includes reduced transaction fees) to Girl Scout organizations across the US -- something tells us it won't have much trouble getting attracting interest.

Samsung's Galaxy S 4G Offers Carrier Billing for Media Hub
Samsung today announced that with the launch of the Galaxy S 4G, it is among the first of its devices in the U.S. to support direct carrier billing for the Media Hub. The Media Hub is Samsung's music, movie and TV content store, which can be accessed directly from the device. Any content downloaded from the store can be billed to a user's T-Mobile account rather than necessitate the use of a credit card. Media Hub purchases can be shared with up to five other devices.(follow link to read)
Sprint pulls Samsung Epic 4G Android 2.2 (Froyo) update; data connectivity, SD card issues reported
Not a ton of good news this week for Samsung handset owners awaiting software updates. Just three days after a highly-anticipated, Android 2.2 update began flowing to Epic 4G handsets, the code has pulled from update servers. Citing increased support calls, Sprint is looking to find the root cause of several, pesky problems. “The issues being reported are related to data connectivity following the upgrade and SD card issues when attempting to access photos, music, etc,” reads a moderator forum post. “If you are experiencing these issues, a hard reset has been reported to resolve the problems.” Hard reset?! Ouch. No word on who/what is at fault or when the update might be ready to download again. [Via Android Central]

Scosche's goBAT II portable battery pack handles two USB devices at once, including your iPad
We'll just keep it real simple for you: the object you're looking at above is the Revive II charger, but slimmer, and with a rechargeable battery pack thrown in rather than a wall / cigarette adapter. Got it? Good. The goBAT II contains a 5000mAh rechargeable lithium ion battery, and it offers a pair of USB ports for charging. One's a 10-watt (2.1 Amp) port capable of handling high-maintenance devices like Apple's iPad, while the other is a more conventional 5-watt (1 Amp) socket. Scosche is also throwing in a USB adapter for the Galaxy Tab, theoretically letting those with divided households charge both an iOS and Android tablet at the same time. Brain melting, we know. It also works with the company's Revive charging app, which indicates how long a device will take to charge on any of Scosche's chargers and can also be configured to send an email notification once a device has been fully charged. She's all yours down at the source link for $89.99.Continue reading Scosche's goBAT II portable battery pack handles two USB devices at once, including your iPadScosche's goBAT II portable battery pack handles two USB devices at once, including your iPad originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 23 Feb 2011 19:37:00 EDT. AppVerse now live in the CrackBerry App Store! Delivers social interaction and features to aid in BlackBerry app discovery!!
One of the big deficiencies within mobile app store environments these days is the ability to meaningfully discover apps, games and themes that are going to be worthwhile for you. Best Sellers and Top Downloads lists do typically provide a good starting point for app discovery, but moving beyond that app stores tend to fall apart. Star ratings usually regress somewhere to the mean (that 3 star average that leaves you wondering whether you should or shouldn't download an app) and the comments left by anonymous users far too often provide little or no value (anybody notice all the spam and gibberish in App World these days?). Sum it up, and it's no wonder so many BlackBerry users check into a site like CrackBerry daily for advice and info on what apps to download. App discovery via the app store environment itself can be frustrating!
That all changes today with the rollout of AppVerse within the CrackBerry App Store. AppVerse delivers a really trusting and engaging app store experience, thanks to the layer of social interaction and features it adds. Should you choose to create your AppVerse account (it's not mandatory and you can shop in the CrackBerry App Store as you always have), you can setup your public profile which display app purchases you have made, along with reviews and ratings you provide (you can choose to hide apps as well and also have full control over privacy/notification settings from the My Account > AppVerse page). You can follow other AppVerse members, comment on their reviews and rate whether individual app reviews were helpful or not. You can also ask other AppVerse members to provide a review for any app you're interested in. This social interaction really ups the accountability of everybody in the app store, which delivers reviews that are REALLY HELPFUL. When you tap into the power of AppVerse, that frustration and uncertainty are gone. You can even review apps that are not available in our CrackBerry App Store (ie. it's in App World and not the CrackBerry App Store catalog yet).
It's still early days, so if you find any bugs or have any ideas for new features you'd like to see implemented, be sure to drop us a comment. We already have some more features planned for rollout in the weeks ahead, but take a browse around and you'll see it's already off to a great start. Not sure where to begin? TUAW TV Live: The Android flu cancels today's show
Well, whatever it was that knocked TUAW Talkcast Host Kelly Guimont for a loop on Sunday night has apparently crawled through the Interwebs and infected me. After a rough night with a fever, I can barely speak, never mind get through a one-hour show without coughing every few seconds. I'm blaming the Android flu for this -- it's your fault, Google!
As a result, there will be no TUAW TV Live today as I don't want my good friends in the chat room to catch the Android flu. We'll see you next week, when I'm pretty sure the show is going to be all about the new iPads.
In the meantime, be sure to go out to ustream.tv/tuaw and watch some of the golden oldie episodes.

AOC Aire Black LED Displays just 12.7mm thick
AOC has outed its latest LCD display, the AOC Aire Black LED, a mere 12.7mm thick despite offering up to 23-inches of picture. The 20-inch e2043Fk, 22-inch e2243Fwk and 23-inch e2343Fk all have a 5ms response time and nebulous 50,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.
Inputs include DVI-D with HDCP support, and there’s Screen+ software onboard – the big differentiator between these three and the previous Aire range – to split the display up into four individual, easily-managed desktops. Power consumption is said to be a miserly 15W in use and 0.1W in standby.
The three new AOCs are available now, priced at $129 for the 20-inch e2043Fk, $149 for the 22-inch e2243Fwk and $179 for the 23-inch e2343Fk.
Press Release:
AOC Launches the Ultra-SlimAire Black LED Monitor
New addition to the AireLED Series includes 12.7 mm-thin monitors with embedded Screen+ Feature and DVI-D with HDCP input
Fremont, Calif. ? February 23, 2011? AOC, the world?s largest manufacturer of LCD/LED Monitors and HDTVs, reveals the Aire Black LED, a glossy piano-black monitor featuring one of the world?s slimmest display panels. This new all-black addition to the popular AireLED Series offers bonus features like embedded Screen+ software that allows the user to divide the screen into four self-contained work areas. The Aire Black LED monitor comes in 20-inch (e2043Fk, $129), 22-inch (e2243Fwk, $149) and 23-inch (e2343Fk, $179) screen sizes, and is now available at national retailers including Best Buy, Radio Shack, Office Max, Fry?s, TigerDirect/CompUSA and PC Richards, among others.
The sleek widescreen Aire Black LED Monitor is one of the slimmest display panels on the market at 12.7 mm throughout. The monitor also offers impressive image quality with a 50,000,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio, 5ms response time, and a DVI-D with HDCP input for the ultimate HD viewing experience. Along with being EPEAT Gold Certified for its green packaging and production, the Aire Black LED Monitor on average consumes only 15 watts of energy and includes an eSaver feature that lets the user preset power conservation modes for the display when the PC is not in use. The monitor?s Power Saving Mode uses 50 percent less power, and Standby Mode uses only 0.1w.
?A clean and modern aesthetic coupled with amazing image quality have made the AireLED Series one of our most popular monitor lines for both business and home use,? said Robert Velez, AOC Marketing Manager. ?The Aire Black LED display reduces energy costs and offers incredible value, which is a trademark of the AOC brand and products.?
The versatile Aire Black LED Monitor has a built-in VESA stand that locks into place so that the monitor can be used on a desktop and easily mounted on a wall by simply pushing a button and folding the stand at its tilt hinge. No assembly is required for the stand, making the monitor a helpful solution for businesses that require visual displays but have limited space. The monitor?s easily accessible connections are located at the back of the stand, while its front features convenient LED touch controls for power and onscreen display.

YouTube to add live NBA, NHL games
Google is currently in talks with the NBA and NHL in an effort to bring live game streaming to YouTube.
The move follows the strong success of live streaming crickets Indian Premier League.
Gautam Anand, Googles director of content partnerships for Asia Pacific says YouTube is aiming for more live sports and is in talks with "most pro sports leagues," including soccer in Europe.
Anand says last year's ndian Premier League experiment brought in 55 million unique visits from 250 countries.
Says the director:
Its fair to say that there will be a lot more appealing sports content youll see on YouTube. We have ongoing conversations with pretty much everyone.
Google does note that where the live streaming will be offered is dependent on each deal, which will be different.Permalink | Comments

'Dramatic and ambitious' new Final Cut Pro to debut this spring
TechCrunch reports that Final Cut Pro, Apple's professional video editing suite, is set for a major update this spring. According to TechCrunch, a small group of prominent video editors were recently invited to Apple's campus to try out the upcoming revamp to Final Cut Pro and give their feedback on it. If their reports are anything to go by, the next Final Cut Pro is nothing short of amazing.
One tester said the next version of FCP is "the biggest overhaul to Final Cut Pro since the original version was created over 10 years ago." Another calls the next Final Cut "dramatic and ambitious." Exact details on the changes from the current Final Cut Pro software are sparse, but that could be because, as TechCrunch notes, the next version of FCP encompasses "everything from low level architectural changes to a complete redesign of the user interface."
A Final Cut Pro redesign shouldn't come as a total shock. Apple reportedly reorganized the Pro Software team in 2009 and promoted Randy Ubillos, who lead the ground-up redesign of iMovie '08, to its project manager position. Final Cut Pro was last updated in July of 2009, and after its release there were rumors that FCP engineers had left Apple. That caused many to fear that Apple had abandoned future development of the software. One user even emailed Steve Jobs in August 2010 about the future of Final Cut Pro. Jobs took the time to email the user a reply and stated that the "Next release will be awesome."
"Awesome," "dramatic" and "ambitious." That's a lot to live up to. The next version of Final Cut Pro is reportedly set to be released this spring -- around the time of the annual National Association of Broadcasters conference, according to TechCrunch.'Dramatic and ambitious' new Final Cut Pro to debut this spring originally appeared on TUAW on Wed, 23 Feb 2011 09:00:00 EST. Motorola Atrix 4G gets the teardown treatment, fourth G nowhere to be found
If our review of the Atrix left you hungering for more, you can now feast your eyes on the guts of Motorola's new Android powerhouse. Thanks to the folks at iFixit, its teardown reveals a familiar range of parts -- 16GB of NAND flash, 960x540 PenTile LCD, 1GB DDR2 RAM and that beast of a NVIDIA Tegra 2 CPU. What's more, is that the teardown brings to light some enticing news -- the glass panel is not glued to the LCD. This allows for the clumsy to not have to spend the extra dough if they crack the glass (which is usually affixed to the display). Hit the source link if you've got your Atrix and are ready to dismantle the thing yourself.
P.S. -- There is a Qualcomm MDM6200 HSPA+ chip inside the phone. The title is meant to be a joke in reference to misconceptions about 4G wireless technology. Sony shows off 25-inch OLED
Sony has unveiled two new OLED TVs this week, the largest commercially available to date.
Adding the TVs to the Trimaster EL line, the new 17 and 25-inch OLED TVs will join the original commercial OLED display, Sony's 11-inch version.
OLED TVs offer the best power-efficiency, the deepest blacks, the richest colors, and the thinnest designs.
The latest displays are the first with RGB 10-bit drivers and the standard luminance is 100 cd/m2.
Says Sony (via Tom's):
These new monitors are the next step in professional displays, providing end users with extremely high picture quality. This is breakthrough technology for applications where visual performance and accuracy are paramount, offering an unbeatable combination of image reproduction, color accuracy, reliability and stability.
The 25-inch BVM-E250 will be released in April for around $29,000 and the 17-inch BVM-E170 will hit in June for around $15,000.

Spring Design Alex (Remember?) Officially Discontinued
We haven't heard anything regarding the Alex e-reader for a long time. I nearly reviewed it, but can say now that due to its performance it really wasn't fit to be reviewed at the time. I was told then that a successor was in the works, and although we've heard no more from them, this week finds a notable change on their site: the Alex is no longer "out of stock," but has graduated to being "phased out."

Apple to roll out retail-based ?Joint Venture? service in coming weeks
There has been quite a bit of noise recently about a quarterly, morning meeting for Apple retail employees scheduled for this Sunday, February 27th. Apple retail staffers have been asked to sign a non-disclosureagreement — not a standardprocedurefor such meetings — sparking speculation about Macbook Pro, iPad, and other hardware-related unveilings. BGR has learned that the topic in question is a new, retail-based service being called Joint Venture.First rumored back in March of last year, Joint Venture is an extension of Apple’s current Genius Bar services aimed at small businesses and prosumers. Subscribers of the new service will be able to speak with a store-based Apple technician — lovingly referred to as Geniuses — over the phone for one-on-one consultation

Sony VAIO CA and CB pack the latest Core i5 power for those who can look past the neon
We're aware, the "exclusive" green and orange neon color of Sony's VAIO CB and CA laptops can make your eyes bleed, but Sony's pretty excited about the aesthetic and the way it radiates light around the edges of the laptop. Oh, and don't forget how the touchpad "emits a beautiful glow." It's true, the rigs do have an interesting glow stick-like look to them -- at least, we thought so when we saw them last month -- however, we found their innards and features to be more enlightening. Starting at $800, the 14-inch CA10 and 15.5-inch CB10 will both be available with Intel Sandy Bridge Core i5 processors, AMD Radeon HD 6630 graphics, and Blu-ray drives. Select models will also pack Intel's WiDi 2.0, which lets you stream 1080p video to your TV. And remember Sony's Remote Keyboard, which lets you navigate your PS3 or Bravia TV with the the laptop? Yep, the CA and CB both have that functionality baked in as well. What's that? You'd be interested if they didn't blind you? What if we also told you they will come in black and white? We thought that might change your mind, and according to the official press release below there will indeed be alternative color versions. You'll be able to pre-order them both on March 13th, but until then you can always see if the neon grows on you with the photos below.

Is The First Official Chrome OS Device A Monitor Or All-In-One PC? Nope.
Earlier today we received a tip to check out the blog Chrome OS Site for the details on the first official Chrome OS device. Obviously intrigued, I clicked through. There, I read about not a notebook or netbook running the OS, but rather a monitor! Specifically, the report has Acer supposedly unveiling this "monitor", or perhaps all-in-one PC, called theDX241H, as the first actual Chrome OS device. Several other reports along these lines followed.
Weird, right? Well yes. Because from what we're hearing, that's just not true at all.

Yobongo for iPhone hands-on
Yobongo, if you haven’t heard, is a new iPhone app that meshes location-aware messaging with a chatroom-like environment, and it’s kind of amazing. By using a custom algorhytm and different variables including your location, people you have chatted with previously, or even people you know, Yobongo connects you with up to around 10 people in a single “room” and well, from there it’s one big conversation. I’ve been using Yobongo for around a week, and while the beta test didn’t use our location to work (there was most likely no one nearby since the service hasn’t launched yet), it’s a pretty incredible experience. For starters, the UI is beautiful, well thought out and extremely polished, and it’s minimalistic enough without

Microsoft to release Kinect for Windows SDK this spring
Looks like we're not the only ones enjoying all those Kinect hacks being dreamed up and implemented by hardworking enthusiasts the world o'er. That's right: it was rumored early this year, and now it's been confirmed -- Microsoft will be releasing the Kinect for Windows SDK. According to Microsoft, "It will be available this spring as a free download, and will give academic researchers and enthusiasts access to key pieces of the Kinect system-such as the audio technology, system application programming interfaces and direct control of the Kinect sensor itself." Commercial licensing details will be made available at some point thereafter.

BlackBerry Bold Touch Spotted In The Flesh
We’re still a depressingly long way off from any QNX-based BlackBerry handsets. But RIM’s next line of smartphones has already started to leak out. We first heard about the Bold Touch from a leaked CDMA roadmap. Now images of the device itself have leaked.
The new Bold is a nod back to traditional BlackBerry design. We’ve got the front-facing QWERTY keyboard, portrait-style display and overall control layout of the Bold 9000. But that display is a 2.8″ capacitive touchscreen now. It has a 640×480 resolution and a 5 MP camera capable of shooting 720p video.
This new Berry sports WiFi and mobile hotspot connectivity options, and it also contains an NFC chip. The biggest change in terms of form is a glossy back and sides that slant down to the front more steeply. The Touch is expected to be just 10.5 mm thick, which would make it the thinnest BlackBerry ever. Expect a launch in Q3 2011.

Volvo releases more details on 124MPG V60 plug-in, shows off iPhone app (video)
Current gasoline-powered hybrids can barely manage to keep ahead of small diesels in the mpg wars that will shape our future transportation structure, but in theory a diesel hybrid would rule the roost -- for the moment, at least. That's what Volvo will be showing off in Geneva shortly, promising a whopping 124MPG from the V60 plug-in diesel hybrid it announced a few weeks back. The car uses an internal combustion engine driving the front wheels and an electric one to spin the rears, meaning 2WD efficiency but AWD grip -- and a combined 285hp to handily blow the doors off any Prius that dares step up at a streetlight. Volvo is saying the car will take about five hours to charge on a standard household outlet and that you'll be able to monitor that status from your iPhone. Check it out in the video below and turn up those speakers in preparation for one heck of an inspirational piano solo.Continue reading Volvo releases more details on 124MPG V60 plug-in, shows off iPhone app (video)Volvo releases more details on 124MPG V60 plug-in, shows off iPhone app (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 21 Feb 2011 08:47:00 EDT. Followup: Some mockups of a 4-inch iPhone screen
After reading about the math behind a 4-inch iPhone screen, readers said the comparisons between different screen aspect ratios would be a lot more helpful with additional mockups aside from the 16:9-screened iPhone we put up. After hacking and slashing my way through a photo editor, I've created a gallery of mockups using the existing iPhone 4 handset as a template. You'll see the current iPhone 4 compared against the same handset with a 4-inch screen in several formats, including its current 3:2 aspect ratio, the iPad's 4:3 format, the 16:10 ratio used in the MacBook and MacBook Pro and the 16:9 format from the "doing the math" post.
I'm not an expert photo manipulator by any means, and these pictures won't be as pixel-precise as the math was. Still, these pics should give you a better concept of how the iPhone would need to change in order to accommodate a 4-inch screen. Check out the gallery below, where you'll find iPhones in versions ranging from drool-worthy to terrifyingly bad.
