Texting Doesn?t Make Your Kids Dumb, Text Bands Do

I'm not one of those people who thinks that texting and tweeting is ruining children's ability to communicate. Texting and tweeting are the future of communication, so if kids are learning to keep it concise or feel more comfortable sending a text to their crush than making a call, I'm all for it. That's not to say that this communication should be at the expense of all personal real-life interaction, but it doesn't mean that the kids themselves are becoming dumb because they can keep a tweet under 140 characters.

The technology companies are providing kids for this communication, on the other hand, is certainly becoming dumb. Take these Text Bands, for example. Hallmark thinks that they can lure kids into typing 10-character messages with the help of three buttons in a situation where messages can only be sent by a fist-bump or high-five.

Comcast doubles broadband speeds 'in certain markets,' launches 305Mbps Xfinity Platinum service

Comcast has just done the deed -- following a rumor on the matter, it's launching 305Mbps (down) / 65Mbps (up) Xfinity Platinum internet service in the highly populated Northeast division of the United States. For those who've been around a while, you may remember a time where one would weep upon finding out that Verizon's FiOS simply wasn't available at a desired location. Now, however, Comcast is doing its darnedest to rival fiber-to-the-home options with blisteringly fast cable service. In addition to its new flagship tier, the provider is also doubling the speeds of two of its existing internet speed tiers in certain markets at no additional cost. Specifically, Xfinity Blast! customers will now get download speeds of up to 50Mbps (formerly 25 Mbps), and Extreme 50 customers will now receive speeds of up to 105Mbps (formerly 50 Mbps). According to GigaOM, the ultra-desirable Platinum service will ring up at $300 per month, which is a full $90 more than Verizon's own 300Mbps FiOS option. Poll: Is it time for the iPhone to go multi-colored?

Should the iPhone 5 go multi-colored? Apple usually keeps their flagship lines on a strict palette -- just metal for MacBooks lately, and metal and black or white for iPhones, iPads and iPod touches. The lower end lines get to have much more fun, with cool, chromatic options like silver, pewter, blue, green, yellow, pink, and red. During the first few years of the iPhone there were always rumors a product Red version would ship around the holidays, but nothing ever came of them. To this day, if you want to add a splash of color to your iPhone, you have to go with a case or skin or sticker or after-market color swap. Now, as the iPhone 5 approaches, is it time for Apple to revisit their color palette? Is it time to give iPhone owners the same options iPod nano and iPod shuffle owners have enjoyed for years? Is it time for the iPhone to get as multi-colored as the old Apple logo and original iMacs? Or would that ruin the simplicity, class, and elegance of the iPhone line? Despite what you might be thinking, what you're seeing above isn't a pair of sleek and very polished viking horns -- instead, you're gawking at an eccentric set of Bluetooth speakers. Adequately dubbed "Spinnaker," the rig measures in at a whopping 16.5 inches in height, and Edifier says the uncommon figure is specifically designed to "project sound toward the listener with front facing tweeters and mid-range drivers."
