UCLA creates portable microscope that uses holograms, not lenses

Instead of lugging a heavy microscope into the field, doctors and nurses in remote regions may have a more portable choice -- a lightweight microscope that replaces lenses with holograms. Researchers at UCLA announced a prototype dual-mode microscope that's lightweight, costs between $50 and $100 to produce and is similar in size to a banana. Like a hologram that uses interfering rays to create an image, this device shines light on a sample where its sensor chip (apparently also found in iPhones and BlackBerrys) and a cloud-based software program analyze the interference pattern and reconstruct an image of the sample. Since it's dual-mode, both large samples and small samples can be analyzed through processes called "transmission" and "reflection," and doctors could potentially use their laptops or smartphones to access the images remotely. Although still considered a prototype, researchers think the development has the opportunity to revolutionize health care by allowing doctors to test things like water, blood and food. Apple contributing to Chinese pollution, environmentalists say

Five environmental organizations in China have issued a report accusing Apple of contributing to the country’s pollution by providing business to suppliers that have “public records of environmental violations,” the Financial Times reported on Wednesday. The environmentalists attempted to contact 29 different tech companies in an effort to coerce the firms into cleaning up their supply chains but said Apple was unresponsive. Apple is reportedly taking “advantage of the loopholes in developing countries’ environmental management systems” to create its products. Factories for Kaedar Electronics and Unimicron Electronics are being blamed for increased cancer rates and pollution in the Chinese city of Kunshan. AT&T HTC Jetstream 4G LTE tablet launches September 4th for $700 (yes, $700) on contract

AT&T announced on Wednesday that it will offer the HTC Jetstream, AT&T’s first 4G LTE/HSPA+ tablet on September 4th for $699.99 with a new two-year contract. iOS 5 beta 7 goes live for developers

Well, you can't say Cupertino isn't being consistent. Just like last time, Apple's gone and released a new beta of iOS 5, less than two weeks after the last one. Not much of interest pops out of build 9A5313E's release notes, but we'd presume it squashes a fair share of bugs. Hit up settings to begin the roughly 70MB OTA update, or test those browser downloading skills at the dev portal linked below. And while you're there, don't forget to snag updated versions of Xcode, iTunes, and an updated firmware for the second-generation AppleTV. Samsung finally announces Galaxy S II for Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T

It has been available for months in Europe, and has set pre-sale records in the U.S., but Samsung has finally announced the Galaxy S II for three major U.S. carriers.

For Sprint, the device will be called the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic Touch 4G and for T-Mobile the device will be called the T-Mobile Galaxy S II. AT&T only said their device would be unveiled in "the coming weeks."

Sprint's model came with a full spec sheet, pricing and availability:
