Music industry?s anti-piracy playbook revealed: Site blocking, app removal and litigation

A leaked confidential report from the archaically-named�International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has revealed a wide range of strategies being employed by the recording industry to fight piracy, including petitioning for the removal of third-party music apps from app stores and petitioning ISPs to block sites that offer pirated music.�The report, obtained by�TorrentFreak,�shows that the IFPI is advising the music industry to attack piracy with multiple tactics that are divided into five broad categories:��Take down, Disruption, Investigation, Lobbying and Litigation.Among other things, the�IFPI says the industry should attack companies that advertise on piracy sites by implementing a “structured notice and take down program targeting Google?s (GOOG)�AdSense and DoubleClick advertising networks”; create “quick take down agreements” with Google, Apple (AAPL)

Another day, another Apple (AAPL) vs. Samsung (005930) trial. The two consumer electronics companies are preparing to do battle in San Jose, California next week, and now-public court documents shed light on the positions each firm is taking. On Tuesday, Apple told Samsung exactly what it thinks its technology patents are worth (spoiler: barely anything at all), and subsequent filings from Samsung reveal that the South Korea-based company has a few choice words for Apple as well. As highlighted by The Wall Street Journal, Samsung’s trial brief pulls no punches in telling the court exactly where it stands regarding Apple’s repeated patent-related accusations. Nokia Drive Knows Your Commute By Heart

Nokia recently updated its Nokia Drive application with a new feature called My Commute. With My Commute enabled, Nokia Drive will learn over time the various routes that Lumia device owners take to and from work. The app also learns the general time that you leave for work in the morning, as well as when you leave work in the evening, and can inform the driver of traffic problems in advance so that they may re-route to avoid problems. The update also allows Lumia device owners to pin destinations to the home screen, allowing for one-press access to their route home. Nokia Drive is a free download for the Lumia 900, 800, 710, and 610, and the My Commute feature is available in the U.S. to start. My Commute will be expanded to other markets over time. Nokia also reiterated that it plans to make Nokia Drive available to all Windows Phone 8 devices later this year, including those made by competitors HTC and Samsung. For now, however, it is exclusive to Lumia devices.

Accessory maker Moshi settles patent suit with three firms

The California-based Mac, iPhone and iPad accessory maker Moshi announced yesterday that the company has settled three suits it brought against other vendors. The other companies were allegedly copying Moshi's patented iVisor touchscreen protector, which is designed to be applied bubble-free. Moshi says it has sold more than 3 million iVisor units in iPhone, iPad and Android-compatible forms.

Moshi gained permanent injunctions against PhoneDevil Ltd. and Shenzhen Membrane Precise Electron Ltd. that prevent those two firms from selling products in scope of the patent (US patent 8,044,942, which describes touchscreen protectors with an "air gap" between cover and screen). Both companies are also making financial payments to settle the dispute. This follows an earlier case where Splash Products LLC agreed to pay Moshi a settlement fee and exit the market for these products.

We hear constantly about the patent lawsuits at the top level of the technology industry between giant firms such as Samsung, Motorola Mobility, HTC, Kodak and Apple -- but the same cat and mouse game is taking place throughout the tech sector, much as it is across all business areas. Radian project would deliver time-lapse to iPhone

Time lapse photography can produce stunning photographs, but capturing the images to create the effect can be difficult. Kris Cheng is working on Radian, a Kickstarter camera and iPhone accessory that'll make the process a little bit easier.

The Radian is a hockey puck-shaped device that attaches to your DSLR camera. It fits onto the tripod mount and uses the trigger release input to communicate with your camera. Radian also connects to your iPhone or Android device, which can be used to set the camera options for your time-lapse photo shoot. Once you have the Radian programmed, you can disconnect your mobile phone and walk way confident that Radian will automatically adjust your camera as instructed. Radian also lets you take time-lapse photos with your iPhone, if so desired.

Pledges start at $150 for the standard Radian, and, for a little bit more cash, you can get the charcoal version with some extra goodies like an L-bracket.
