Apple investigated over iPad 4G claims in the U.K.
Regulators in the United Kingdom confirmed in late March that they were�looking into various complaints concerning Apple’s latest tablet. Now, according to the BBC, the Advertising Standards Authority has begun to widen its inquiry into Apple’s advertising practices regarding the new iPad. Earlier complaints were resolved after discussions with the Cupertino-based company, however the agency is now looking into further concerns raised by consumers. Regulators are reportedly not satisfied with Apple’s complied agreement to amend claims about the latest iPad’s 4G capabilities, because when 4G coverage becomes more widely available in the U.K., the iPad will still be incompatible. Apple confirmed as Bloom Energy's customer
CNet confirmed today that Bloom Energy will be supplying fuel cells to Apple. This will go toward powering Apple's North Carolina data center.
GigaOM originally reported last month that Bloom Energy would be Apple's supplier for the fuel-cell farm. There will be 4.8 megawatts of biogas fuel cells, what the company calls Bloom Boxes, powering all those servers. Apple also uses biogas fuel cells at the Cupertino campus.
It's not the only eco-friendly technology Apple is using in Maiden, N.C. One of the geeky, cute contraptions of the early Facebook days was a web-enabled beer keg at company headquarters. Amazon has strong quarter thanks to digital sales
Amazon reported strong quarterly earnings this week, thanks mainly to strong digital sales.Net income for the quarter was $130 million, a decline from last year but well above what analysts were expecting from the company. Earlier this year, Amazon itself said it could see a large loss of $200 million as it continues to spend on a digital expansion and new centers to ship goods.Revenue grew 34 percent to $13.18 billion, continuing its trend of strong growth.CEO Jeff Bezos would not apologize for his company's expenditures, which seem to always depress profits while planning for the future and a growing audience.Digital, for its part, seems to be paying off. Revenue from media, including ebooks, music, movies and apps grew 17 percent to $2.2 billion.As is their policy, the company did not reveal how many Kindle Fire tablets have been sold, although that number is expected to be above 5 million.Permalink | Comments
T-Mobile Prism leaked: entry-level Huawei smartphone to launch in May
While the design (and even the briefing slides) scream affordable, we're sure there must be some Big Magenta customers aching for a keenly-priced smartphone fix. So here's the Prism. Huawei's behind that T-Mobile face, cooking up a Android Gingerbread phone with a pretty weedy 600MHz processor and a 3.5-inch (480 x 320) touchscreen. A fixed-focus (yeah) 3.2-megapixel camera pokes out the back, while a microSD slot means you can extend space for those vaguely-almost-in-focus shots -- the Prism arrives with a 2GB card already onboard. BlackBerry 10 developer toolkit released in beta, adds Native and WebWorks SDKs for app-building flexibility
Will BlackBerry 10 be the hallowed OS that heals Waterloo's recent wounds or yet another RIM-shot to highlight its foibles? Only the fickle tide of consumer interest will certainly tell. But while the success and awareness of that new platform undoubtedly rests on the company's shoulders, a great deal of it also hinges upon crucial developer support. To spur things along in that latter department, RIM's released its developer toolkit in beta today. The tools, launched ahead of forthcoming BB 10 devices and the nascent ecosystem that they'll depend upon, are designed for flexibility, allowing third parties to choose between the Native SDK with its OS-specific APIs or the WebWorks SDK for HTML5 and CSS. The company's even gotten a head-start and partnered with the likes of Gameloft, which has already committed to optimizing 11 of its software titles for use on the platform. There's still a long road to US recovery ahead for the ailing BlackBerry brand, so let's hope this latest call-to-arms isn't lost on the dev community.
