RIM acquires The Astonishing Tribe (TAT), the SWAT team of UI design
RIM’s upcoming QNX-based OS is about to get a swift kick in the UI, as the company announced its acquisition of The Astonishing Tribe on Thursday. Also known as TAT, the team is renowned for its stunning UI work that often includes unique concepts that never manage to find their way to production devices. While TAT has done a great deal of work across several markets including automotive and consumer electronics, mobile platforms user experiences is where they shine and as any BlackBerry user will tell you, RIM needs a lot of help in that department. And here we have OS 5.0.0.1036 for the BlackBerry Curve 8900. Makes you kind of wonder how long Research In Motion will keep supporting OS' for these devices right? As always folks, leaked OS so be sure to back up your data. Word has it there is more OS' on the way just not, today.

Opera celebrates 150 million users
Opera is celebrating reaching a new milestone: 150 million users are now using its Web browser (mobile and Desktop versions.
The Opera.com website was changed on Wednesday to display the "inbox" of Opera co-founder Jon S. von Tetzchner. You can browse through folders of his inbox and read the mail in it, but the most important item is the very first one which states that the entire Opera team is out celebrating a 150 million user milestone.
Opera crossed 100 million users in April 2010, a figure which includes mobile versions of its web browser.
The recent release of an Opera 11 beta brought tab stacking, a new way to manage tabs, and also provided support for HTML5 and extensions. The company is also working on an improved auto-update system.

BlackBerry Empathy concept design magically detects the moods of your contacts

We have seen BlackBerry concept designs before, but this concept may take away our need for BBM emoticons, forever. The Empathy pairs with a biometrics ring to send the user's emothional data to the crystal like device. The concept device was designed by Kiki Tang and Daniel Yoon for a RIM sponsored project at the Art Center College of Design. One of the designers describes the interface as follows:
"It is of course touch based and all the user?s connections are shown graphically so you can see who is connected to whom. Each contact has an avatar that is encompassed by two colored rings. The inner colored ring shows the contact?s previous emotional state, and the outer ring represents the contact?s current emotional state. It is important to show the shift in emotions in order to see how an event has affected that contact.
Another important feature that we felt was important was the ?Emotional Health Chart?. This chart would monitor the user?s emotional health through an indefinite period of time. One would be able to see how a certain event, or phone call/ message has affected the user. Obviously, if the chart shows someone is always upset, there would be a problem? If permitted, a user would be able to view other user?s charts as well."
A very interesting concept. Though there is no technology that can accomplish this yet (there hasn't been any huge strides in mood ring technology), it doesn't mean there someday won't be. It we would be interesting to see my mood at the site of the dreaded hourglass, or my girlfriend's mood change the minute I bought my fourth BlackBerry of the year. Software aside, I actually like hardware concept (Gorilla Glass what?). It even sports a full qwerty keyboard on the reverse side! What do you all think? Let us know in the comments.

PlayStation Phone briefly spotted on video
The still unofficial Sony Ericsson PSP Phone has been seen in a short, blurry video today, at least confirming its existence.
Last month, Engadget posted pictures of the device, the first pictures of the device that has been oft-rumored for over two years.
The source says the smartphone could be dubbed the Sony Ericsson Z1.
It will run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, have a 4.1-inch multi-touchscreen, an 8MP camera and a dedicated app store.
Dvice even says an official announcement could come as soon as December 9, although all of this is unconfirmed.
