Nokia Beats RIM in Court Over Wi-Fi Patents

A Swedish court has determined that Research In Motion cannot add a clause covering Wi-Fi technology to an existing standard essential licensing agreement it has with Nokia. The effect means that RIM must strike a separate licensing agreement with Nokia in order to sell equipment with Wi-Fi on board. The arbitrator overseeing the case said, "RIM was in breach of contract and is not entitled to manufacture or sell WLAN products without first agreeing royalties with Nokia." Nokia has filed cases in the U.S., U.K., and Canada to ensure that the arbitration ruling is enforced. If RIM does not strike a licensing agreement with RIM, it could be barred from selling its products.
