How Churches Use Social Media [INFOGRAPHIC]
Religion isn't a word often associated with technology -- but it should be.
Communication between religious organizations and their followers has blossomed on social media. Many churches have turned to social networks to increase their outreach to spread their teachings.
Buzzplant, a Christian-based digital advertising agency, surveyed churches to see how they're using social media within their organization. More than 30% of churches surveyed said they update Facebook each day, while close to 15% said they never use the network.
Just under half of those surveyed say social media is the most effective method of communication, while about 25% prefer the more traditional method -- kn… Continue reading...

Ubisoft speaks on DRM disaster
Yesterday, Ubisoft made headlines when it was discovered that its UPlay service had a pretty big security hole that could allow malicious websites to access users’ computers. The good news is that Ubisoft has issued a patch for the issue (and managed to do that rather quickly), but the bad news is just starting for Read The Full Story
Microsoft launches Outlook.com, a new email service with limited ads, unlimited storage and built-in Skype
So Microsoft launched a new email service today -- not a redesigned version of Hotmail, but a completely new, built-from-the-ground-up service. It's called Outlook.com, and for now, at least, it will exist separately from Hotmail, as Microsoft attempts to distance itself from Hotmail's bad rap. As it happens, the email features are basically the same across the two services, but from a visual standpoint, Outlook.com is everything Hotmail is not: where Hotmail has distracting banners and video ads, Outlook's are discreet. Indeed, you won't find any targeted ads on conversations with individual people (newsletters and such are still fair game). In lieu of those creepy personalized ads, you'll see quick access to Twitter and Facebook, where you can retweet and like things, as well as post comments. Skype integration is coming too (finally!), though that feature isn't live today. Most importantly, though, it brings a fresh, minimal interface designed to lure away Gmail users who wouldn't have otherwise given Hotmail the time of day. Outlook.com is open to the public starting today. You can create a new account or sign in using an existing Hotmail address. Though it's still in its preview phase, anyone can sign up (read: no invites necessary). Storage is "virtually" unlimited -- Microsoft doesn't want to promise potential spammers a limitless account -- and anyone creating a Microsoft account for the first time gets the usual 7GB of complimentary SkyDrive storage. Hit up that source link if you want check it out yourself, and then head over to our in-depth preview for detailed impressions and screenshots galore.Gallery: Outlook.com preview (screenshots)Continue reading Microsoft launches Outlook.com, a new email service with limited ads, unlimited storage and built-in SkypeFiled under: Internet, SoftwareMicrosoft launches Outlook.com, a new email service with limited ads, unlimited storage and built-in Skype originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 31 Jul 2012 12:00:00 EDT. This DIY Lego Wheelchair Can Carry (Small) Passengers
Burf aka Simon Burfield is an iOS programmer and Lego experimenter who tries to take building blocks to the next level. Interestingly, if this wild rideable Lego wheelchair is any indication, he's left the next level and is now firmly in the distant future.
Made with 12 Lego NXT motors and 12 multi-directional wheels, this carefully designed prototype can carry around a 198 pound person and is controlled via a small joystick. It can move in multiple directions and even roll side to side to "strafe" through a room.

Bing search lets you tag Facebook friends, forces them to Google 'Bing'
Microsoft has already made its "decision" engine get all buddy-buddy with Facebook and Twitter, but now it's taking the integration one step further. You'll now actually be able to tag your friends in searches. Why, pray tell, would you need to do such a thing? Perhaps you've got a buddy who grew up in Paris and need suggestions for where to eat while you're visiting. Or maybe you've spotted an awesome hiking trail and want others to tag along. Just enter the question in the Bing side bar then tag the appropriate people. The search will show up on your timeline and others can pitch in. Of course, you could always just ask these same people via Facebook message, text or (gasp!) in person. But why would you want to simplify matters? Check out the source for more info and the video after the break.Continue reading Bing search lets you tag Facebook friends, forces them to Google 'Bing'Filed under: InternetBing search lets you tag Facebook friends, forces them to Google 'Bing' originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 31 Jul 2012 02:34:00 EDT. Quick Tip: Press the Alt + Back key on your BlackBerry to quickly multitask
Everyone loves to be able to do things quickly, and jumping between applications with ease on your BlackBerry smartphone is something that is already pretty easy. It is common knowledge that pressing andholding the menu keyon your BlackBerry will bring up your open applications to easily switch between. To me, long pressing the menu key is less than an ideal solution, and recently I stumbled across a great alternative that works very well. Instead of having to long press the menu key, scroll around and then press the trackpad to launch, there is another way that works a bit faster. The process is quite simple -- press and hold the Alt key and then press the back key to engage the multitasking menu. From here you can press the back key to navigate between the applications that are open and to select an application all you have to do is ensure it is highlighted and then let go of the Alt key. While you do need both hands to do this combination, I do find it to be faster and easier to use and now I actually use the options as they were intended. No more jumping to the home screen to gain access to the applications I want, instead I jump into them right from the application that I am in currently. CrackBerry.com's feed sponsored by ShopCrackBerry.com. X-RHex Lite robot grows a tail, always lands on its feet (video)
By far the greatest challenge for robots with legs is staying upright when the going gets rough. A team at the University of Pennsylvania's Kod*lab has a hunch that we don't need extra smarts to make that happen -- just an extra appendage. The upgraded X-RHex Lite (XRL) carries a tail that will swing in the right direction to keep the robot upright if it's caught out by a fall, much like a cat. That's impressive for a nearly 18-pound robot (the previous Tailbot was 0.4 pounds), but we're pretty sure no feline has six springy legs; the XRL can crash to the ground and still get back up like it ain't no thing, which gives it a fudge factor others don't have. We don't know if the hexapod critter will lead to more than further experiments. If there are fewer stuck rovers on future exploration missions, though, we'll know who to thank.Continue reading X-RHex Lite robot grows a tail, always lands on its feet (video)Filed under: Robots, ScienceX-RHex Lite robot grows a tail, always lands on its feet (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 30 Jul 2012 22:41:00 EDT. Toshiba slips into the red as latest earnings reveal $153 million loss
Toshiba's most recent fiscal results (the first of its 2012 financial year) show that while the company pulled in $16 billion in turnover, it slumped to a $154 million loss for the last three months. While its "social infrastructure" unit (power plants, LED light bulbs and radiation detectors) generated a $107 million profit, the consumer electronics and white-goods sectors continued to lose sales. The company attributes the loss to further restructuring costs as well as pointing an accusatory digit toward the European financial crisis and concerns about power generation capacity in Japan. Despite the gloom, the company says that it still expects to hit a target of $81 billion turnover and $3.8 billion profit before March 2013.Filed under: Home EntertainmentToshiba slips into the red as latest earnings reveal $153 million loss originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 31 Jul 2012 04:23:00 EDT. Apple reports 3 million Mountain Lion downloads in four days, 'most successful OS X release'
We heard some rumblings ahead of the weekend from third-party sources, and like clockwork, Apple has kicked the week off with its weekend box office returns. According to Cupertino's numbers, the latest version of OS X hit 3 million downloads in four days, making for "the most successful OS X release in Apple's history." Price has surely played a role in Mountain Lion's speedy success, running $20 for 200-plus features, according to Apple's numbers. That list includes big additions like Notification Center and AirPlay Mirroring and a selection of smaller tweaks to the decade-old operating system. More information can be found in the customarily self-congratulatory press release, after the break.Continue reading Apple reports 3 million Mountain Lion downloads in four days, 'most successful OS X release'Filed under: SoftwareApple reports 3 million Mountain Lion downloads in four days, 'most successful OS X release' originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 30 Jul 2012 08:50:00 EDT. Sprint's LTE Headed to Baltimore by End of August
Sprint CEO Dan Hesse today said that Sprint will activate its LTE 4G network in the city of Baltimore by the end of August. Baltimore was one of Sprint's first WiMax markets, and was expected to be among the initial batch of LTE cities. Sprint launched LTE in Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Kansas City, and San Antonio earlier this month. Hesse did not name any other LTE markets, nor did he say exactly when LTE will go live in Baltimore. Additionally, Hesse mentioned a previously unannounced device, the Motorola Photon Q, which is an Android smartphone that will include LTE 4G, worldwide roaming, and a QWERTY keyboard. No other details of the device were revealed, though Hesse said it is launching soon.

CIA dragonfly drone almost beat modern UAVs by 40 years, was swatted (video)
US intelligence agencies were just as obsessed with drone spying 40 years ago as they are nowadays -- only then, it was pipe-smoking entomologists and watchmakers who were in charge of building prototypes. Back in the '70s, the CIA needed some kind of miniature flyer to deliver an audio bug, and after considering (and rejecting) a faux bumblebee, decided that a robotic dragonfly would be the best option. The wee UAV used a "miniature fluidic oscillator" as a motor and was propelled by a small amount of gas. It was somehow guided by a laser beam, which served double-duty as the "datalink for the audio sensor payload," according to the CIA Museum. Unfortunately, the insect-based mech proved too difficult to control, especially with any degree of wind, and was eventually scuppered -- all that's left of the now-declassified project is in the video after the break.Continue reading CIA dragonfly drone almost beat modern UAVs by 40 years, was swatted (video)Filed under: Robots, ScienceCIA dragonfly drone almost beat modern UAVs by 40 years, was swatted (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 30 Jul 2012 08:09:00 EDT. iPhone 5 finally shown off completely assembled
Apple’s iPhone 5 (AAPL) parts have leaked here and there over the past weeks and months, but it looks like all the parts have been collected and we’re now able to see what is most likely Apple’s next-generation iPhone. While a lot of people weren’t a fan of the two-tone color, the latest parts show that the metal panel on the back of the device is the same material as the metal band around the iPhone 5, and it looks much better. Behold, Early iPhone and iPad Prototypes
The iPhone's design is iconic but the final version looked rather different from early designs. With sleek but simple lines, the iPhone set the bar for smartphone design. This bar was set so high that most agree that the iPhone undeniably influenced other phones -- a thought that Samsung is currently fighting against. However, as revealed by court documents, the iPhone we all know finally hit the market after several generations of wild concepts.

Google beats iOS 6 to the 3D maps punch with Google Earth update... but is it any good?
Apple's all new iOS 6 Maps app is still in beta and won't be released publicly until the fall, but if you want 3D maps on your iPhone or iPad now, you can get them courtesy of Google Earth's latest update. Google announced 3D was coming to their maps products following rumors Apple would be adding them to iOS, and is currently offering the virtual models in Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, Geneva, and Rome, with more to follow in the "coming weeks". So how do they compare? Apple's iOS 6 Maps currently include "flyover" mode for Chicago, Copenhagen, Las Vegas, LA, Melbourne, Miami, Montreal (home town of Poly9), Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco (and nearby Apple hometown, Cupertino), Seattle, and Sydney. These may or may not change by release day. So in this case is getting on iOS first, best? Yes and no. I encountered low-memory warnings on the iPhone 4S (with no other large apps running or paused in the background). The 3D models themselves look decidedly low-res on Google Earth compared to what we've seen of Apple Maps to date. (Google Earth, left, iOS 6 Maps, right.) Google Earth is also more twitchy. Often a small gesture would cause a massive zoom, pan, or otherwise cause the current position to be completely lost. Since there's no "back button" to go to the last location view point, you have to start over from scratch which is incredibly annoying. On the plus side, Google Earth includes several features not announced for iOS 6 Maps, including a "tour guide" that provides cinematic pans over local attractions complete with information from Wikipedia. Google also does a good job animating transitions between locations -- zooming out, flying over, and zooming back in -- to keep the user spatially oriented. You can also search for businesses and other points of interest. Google Earth not a full-on Maps replacement, however, as it doesn't currently include even basic directions, let alone Street View, turn-by-turn directions, or other Google experiences. Even without all those features, the Google Earth UI is bitsy, with icons in each of the four corners and a drawer that slides up containing the tours. (Apple's isn't much better, with similar controls in similar places, but with a page curl instead of a drawer slider.) The Text labels on Google Earth, however, are white with no real background, unlike the the transparent black glossy capsule backgrounds on iOS 6 maps, which provide better contrast. When iOS 6 ships this fall, and Google is no longer the default map data provider on the iPhone and iPad, it'll be interesting to see if they turn Google Earth into a full on, Android-level Google Maps app in its own right. For now, 3D in Google Earth needs better models and better memory handling, but it's still an interesting demo and a way to play around with the basic concept ahead of iOS 6. Apple says Google warned Samsung about copying Apple's work
The big trial between Apple and Samsung is slated to begin next week in the US and the two companies are filing briefs in advance to prepare for the jury part of the trial. One juicy tidbit pulled out of Apple's brief by AllThingsD reveals that Samsung was warned by Google and others that its early Galaxy devices were too similar to Apple's products.
According to the brief, Google told Samsung that its prototype Galaxy Tab (P1) and Tab 10.1 (P3) were "too similar" to the iPad and ordered Samsung to make its products a "...distinguishable design vis-à-vis the iPad for the P3." Even a group of designers told Samsung that "innovation" is needed because the Galaxy S looks like it was copied from the iPhone. The group went so far as to say that "[a]ll you have to do is cover up the Samsung logo and it's difficult to find anything different from the iPhone."
Earlier this week, we saw a brief from Samsung that claims the Korean company indirectly helped Apple achieve success with the iPhone, and another one that shows some cool early renderings of the iPad and a Sony-inspired iPhone.

Defcon 20 visitors get their own 'pirate' cellular network in Ninja Tel, exclusive One V to match
The annual Defcon hacking meetup produces its share of unique creations. You know you're in for something special when even your entrance badge is an adventure. Defcon 20 might be winding to a close, but about 650 guests may just have the fondest memory of all: access to a private, ad hoc GSM carrier from Ninja Networks. While the collective's Ninja Tel is really an invitation to a party at the Rio Hotel, where the lone cell site operates out of a van, it lets the privileged few call and text each other to their hearts' content over cellular and WiFi. The network operators can unsurprisingly eavesdrop on any of the completely unencrypted calls -- this is a hacker's convention, after all -- but we don't think guests mind after getting an equally rare, customized HTC One V for free to make the calls in question. The Android 4.0 phone gets unique perks like triggering a nearby vending machine with Qualcomm's AllJoyn or making apps on the spot through Google's Integrated Development Environment. Owners can even reflash the One V to hop on AT&T or T-Mobile afterwards. Just don't expect to see Ninja Tel popping up in your hometown anytime soon; when Defcon shuts its doors, the cellular network shuts down.Filed under: Cellphones, WirelessDefcon 20 visitors get their own 'pirate' cellular network in Ninja Tel, exclusive One V to match originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 29 Jul 2012 15:46:00 EDT. Just in time for the Olympics, Time Out releases Time Out London for iPad
Time Out has just released Time Out London for iPad. The app offers users a curated mix of suggestions for things to see and do in the host city of the 2012 Olympics. Time Out London for iPad has a Flipboard-esque look and feel to it. On the app's home screen you're presented with multiple tiles, each one representing a venue, restaurant, museum or other attraction. Tap the tile to get the local's detailed information, like opening times, rating, address, and transport routes.
This isn't Time Out's first London app. They've offered two others for quite a while now: Things to Do: London and London: Travel Guide. This is, however, Time Out's first London iPad app. Besides being native to the iPad, the app is also built for the Retina display. Another nice feature is that the more you use it, the "smarter" the app gets by showing you venues more suited to your preferences. My only issue with the app is that, for now, it only works in landscape orientation. Hopefully Time Out will add portrait orientation in a future update.
Note that Time Out London for iPad isn't only for the Olympics. The app will continue to be useful and supported long after the Games have ended, so it'll always be a good choice for those coming to London.

3D City View for iOS isn't the only update from the Google Maps and Earth team this week, they've also spruced up their services with new imagery. Fresh high-resolution aerial and satellite photos have been added for a roster of 25 cities and 72 countries or regions, ranging from Antelope Wells, New Mexico to Zimbabwe. In addition, seven international locales and 21 US cities received the 45-degree view treatment, letting you gaze at skylines from a different perspective. The maps are already available, so you can peruse new satellite images of London's Olympic Park and Village just in time for the festivities. Apple presents at Black Hat, expectations get hacked
Apple gave their first ever presentation at the Black Hack conference on Thursday, and while it sounds like it didn't live up to the expectations of those unfamiliar with Apple's typical level of community engagement, it did happen. Nicole Perlroth, writing for The New York Times, reports: [When] hackers and security suits filed out an hour later, most looked bored and deflated. Mr. De Atley had basically done the equivalent of reading aloud a white paper, timed to a PowerPoint deck, before escaping out a side door without answering any questions. Steve Jobs he is not. I'm not sure what the Steve Jobs reference has to do with anything, frankly. Apple never presented before. Anyone thinking they'd open the kimono and start giving out hugs were setting themselves up for disappointment. Baby steps. Apple is new to this. Skittish. Approach them slowly. Carefully. And we'll see what happens next year. Source: The New York Times Black HatSecurityNews

Sony confirms rare PS Vita overheating issue
Sony has responded to the reports that their PlayStation Vita handheld has been experiencing overheating issues in Japan. In some extreme cases, the Vita would even began actually burning.A few gamers in the nation reported the issue, and Japan's independent National Institute of Technology and Evaluation began looking into the situation.Sony has since responded: "SCE confirmed that a small number (23 in Japan) of PS Vita's and USB cable's multi-use port were damaged during recharging, and have reported them to NITE (National Institute of technology and Evaluation). The cases were caused by partial short-circuit on the multi-use port of PS Vita and USB cable due to small particles or liquid attached to it. We believe this is not product oriented issue. The short-circuit damaged the multi-use port, resulting in being unable to boot the system."There will be no recall of the handheld.Permalink | Comments

Nokia Slashes Series 40 Replacement Platform
Nokia has cancelled plans to replace its Series 40 platform with a new Linux-based system called Meltemi, reports Reuters. Citing three sources familiar with Nokia's plans, Reuters says the Meltemi project was cancelled as part of Nokia's on-going cost-cutting measures. Meltemi was meant to help Nokia fend off low-cost Android handsets in developing markets, which is where Nokia sells the bulk of its Series 40 handsets. Series 40 has been around for nearly a decade, and is currently sold in Nokia's Asha line of devices. Nokia did not comment on Reuters' report.
MSI outs new CR41 notebook, hopes you like the color royal bronze
What's rectangular, coated in a royal bronze finish, opens like a clam and lasts for up to seven and a half hours? If you answered MSI's new CR41 notebook, you'd be right (though we would've accepted self-destructing jewelry boxes as an answer). The 14-inch multimedia "mobile companion," announced just today, packs a 1,366 x 768 HD display, dedicated HM76 graphics chipset, choice of Intel's third-generation Core i processors and comes in a variety of storage configurations: 500 GB, 640GB or 720GB. Weighing in at 5.3 pounds (2.4kg) and measuring 13.8 x 9.2 x 1.3 inches (349.7 x 234.8 x 32mm), the laptop also features a six-cell 4,400mAh battery, support for Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi b/g/n, an optical drive, ports for HDMI, USB 3.0 (x2), USB 2.0 (x2), an SD slot and the requisite headphone jack. So far no official pricing or release dates have been made public for the Windows 7 rig, but when it does hit retailers' shelves, rest assured it'll be upgrade-ready for Redmond's next great OS. Follow on past the break for the official PR.Continue reading MSI outs new CR41 notebook, hopes you like the color royal bronzeFiled under: LaptopsMSI outs new CR41 notebook, hopes you like the color royal bronze originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 19:28:00 EDT. You're the Pundit: Identify the Icons
When it comes to evaluating the next big thing, we turn to our secret weapon: the TUAW braintrust. We put the question to you and let you have your go at it. Today's topic is the iPhone prototype icons.
We were having a look through the prototype gallery over on our sister site Engadget, and a shot of some early icons caught our eye. Some icons seem to have persisted almost unchanged to modern iOS (Safari, Weather, Stocks), others underwent major redesign (Phone and Mail).
Looking back at these prototypes, do you think Apple was really going to give us a 4-by-4 puzzle game (shades of OS 9!) and what was up with some of those icons like the lightning bolt, the yellow bar, and the airplane? The blue icon on the bottom bar was the contacts app, right?
If anything, it's surprising how close, at least in terms of general functionality, this icon set was to the final version: from SMS to Mail, Photos to iTunes. And that doesn't even mention the dock at the bottom.
What do you think of these early icon designs, and what are your thoughts about how their design has evolved in the last 5 years? You tell us. Join in the comments with all your analysis.

Apple, Samsung bickering over where to sit in court
The bickering between Samsung and Apple just won't stop. The latest report from AllThingsD suggests Samsung is even arguing over where it will sit and what the two companies will be called during the trial. Striving to get every advantage it can, Samsung is asking the court to call both companies claimants instead of plaintiff and defendant, since the trial involves patent infringement allegations from both sides. Samsung also asks that it be allowed to sit in the plantiff's table when it is arguing its case.
"Equal treatment of the parties with respect to where they sit while presenting their affirmative case will mitigate any prejudice to Samsung that may result from Apple being in closer proximity to the jury throughout the trial," Samsung said in its brief. Jury selection in the trial is slated to begin July 30 so expect to hear a lot more about this legal battle in the upcoming weeks.

Sony Xperia J possibly spotted, may court entry-level fashionistas
That didn't take long. We've only known about the Sony Xperia J and its reported ST26i codename for a short while, but ePrice has already given the purported starter smartphone the full photo tour. From cursory looks and specifications, the J will slot neatly between the Xperia miro and tipo at the start of the line and the small but potent Xperia U: while it's not believed to be quite as fast or iconic as the dual-core U, the single-core, 1GHz J could still be faster than its tiniest cousins and strive for some chic with a brightly colored back wrapped around a 4-inch display. The real highlight may simply be an Xperia that ships with Android 4.0 from the get-go instead of requiring yet another upgrade merry-go-round. When the Xperia J shows is still up in the air, despite presumptions of an appearance at IFA; however, we won't be surprised if the J appears side-by-side with the Mint when it's officially ready for a close-up.Filed under: CellphonesSony Xperia J possibly spotted, may court entry-level fashionistas originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 27 Jul 2012 20:06:00 EDT. Daily iPhone App: Velocirapture has you saving and smiting dinos
Velocirapture is a weird one. You play as God, either smiting or saving a series of faithful or evil dinosaurs. Yup, it's weird. It's brought to you by the same developers who made the really terrific (and similarly strange) Monsters Ate My Condo, so if you liked that kind of swipey puzzle/action, you'll probably like this one, too. I didn't think it was quite as simple or as polished as that game, however, but maybe you'll disagree.
As the dinosaurs wander around, your job is to swipe the righteous ones Heaven and to swipe down the bad ones, smiting them into nonexistence. The action gets fast and crazy quickly, and unlike Monsters Ate My Condo, there's a bit of a metagame, as you can level up your skills and combos as you go, adding a little more depth into how you can play it.
Quite a few of the iTunes comments on the game talk about crashes, but if you're running the latest iOS, I don't believe you'll have a problem. Velocirapture is available as a universal app for US$1.99.

WSJ: Apple, Google reportedly in rival groups to buy Kodak patents
Kodak might be cleared to sell its patents, but it's likely no fan of the companies lined up to make a deal. The Wall Street Journal's best friends, "people familiar with the matter," assert that Apple and Google are part of separate coalitions hoping to buy the 1,100 patents up for grabs. Apple's camp supposedly includes Microsoft and controversial patent holder Intellectual Ventures; Google's team reads more like an Android Justice League, with HTC, LG, Samsung and "patent risk solutions" provider RPX all playing a part. Real or not, there's still much that's up in the air. Kodak's not talking, and even the touted insiders warn both of new challengers and allegiances that could be in flux over the next few days. If there's meat on this rumor bone, however, it could make the August 8th auction another patent war spectacle rather than a mere ticket back to solvency for Kodak. Break out the popcorn. Google, others, reportedly warned Samsung not to copy Apple designs
As Apple and Samsung head to trial over patent and trade-dress issues, internal documents suggest Samsung was warned by Google, their own product design group, and others to be make their devices more distinct from Apple's. John Paczkowski, writing for AllThingsD, reports: In February 2010, Google told Samsung that Samsung?s ?P1? and ?P3? tablets (Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Tab 10.1) were ?too similar? to the iPad and demanded ?distinguishable design vis--vis the iPad for the P3.? In 2011, Samsung?s own Product Design Group noted that it is ?regrettable? that the Galaxy S ?looks similar? to older iPhone models. As part of a formal, Samsung-sponsored evaluation, famous designers warned Samsung that the Galaxy S ?looked like it copied the iPhone too much,? and that ?innovation is needed.? The designers explained that the appearance of the Galaxy S ?[c]losely resembles the iPhone shape so as to have no distinguishable elements,? and ?[a]ll you have to do is cover up the Samsung logo and it?s difficult to find anything different from the iPhone.? Samsung plans to show that Apple too derived their designs from previous products, including Sony, and that Samsung was working on similar designs previous to the iPhone. From phone casings to interfaces to accessories it would impossible to look at Samsung's work up until recently and think they weren't deliberately making their stuff look like Apple's. The question's ultimately -- does that matter? Fridges, TVs, cars, home theater components, etc. all look remarkably similar from one vendor to another. There are entire industries where knock off products are prevalent. Should phones or tablets be any different? On one hand, we like to think that if we had a great, innovative idea and spend a lot of time and money bringing it to market, someone else couldn't just wait in the wings, copy it, and potentially steal our success. And if they were allowed to, it might make us less likely to keep spending time and money on innovation, because copying is easier. On the other hand, almost everything is a remix. Almost all ideas have come before. The talent and skill is knowing what to copy and how to bring it all together and make it a best-in-class product that becomes a mainstream success. Yet arbitrating focused, tasteful copying and lazy, slavish copying doesn't exactly sound like the work of a court. Google is now saying Apple's iOS technology has been so successful, it should be considered a de facto standard. Samsung and others are still arguing they should be allowed to use their standards-essential patents to combat Apple's proprietary patents, and Apple is saying they shouldn't have to be the inventor for the world. If Palm decided to wade into the patent and trade dress wars, how well would Apple fair? If HTC started putting our gear that looking almost identical to the Galaxy S3 or Galaxy Note, down to the naming conventions, icons, and power adapters, would Samsung legal be okay with that? Apple Reports Disappointing Mac Sales Despite Retina MacBook Release: 4 Million Units Sold In Q3 2012
Analysts have been sharply divided in providing estimates for Apple's third quarter earnings report. And it would appear that this time, predictions of a mild third quarter were correct. Apple saw a bit of a plateau in Mac sales, with 4 million Macs, 26 million iPhones, and 17 million iPads sold in Q3 2012. That's compared to last quarter's sales of 4 million Macs, 35.1 million iPhones, and 11.8 million iPads.
The main question was whether or not Apple's MacBook Pro Retina would pick up declining Mac sales. As you can see from the numbers, it appears that 5.1 million pixels does not a spike in sales make, as this represents only a 2 percent increase in sales over the year-ago quarter. At the same time, the Retina MBP was only available for a short portion of the quarter being reported, so it's possible we'll see a spike in Q4.

How badly do you want an all new, all better Facebook for iPhone app? Well...
Facebook's iPhone app getting a complete, natively-coded, totally re-designed update is once again in the news today, though this time with the names of some former Apple talent behind it. Bloomberg says the people involved in the update include: Greg Novick, who helped develop the touch-screen user interface; Tim Omernick and Chris Tremblay, who also worked on the device?s software; and Scott Goodson, who helped create the stock-market application, according to people with knowledge of the hires. Last year, Facebook also bought Push Pop Press, a digital publishing software maker co-founded by Apple alumni Mike Matas and Kimon Tsinteris, two designers who helped build the look and feel of the iPhone and iPad software. Matas is credited with creating the battery logo that shows on the iPhone screen when it?s charging. A longtime BlackBerry user, Mark Zuckerberg converted to an iPhone in the past couple of years. An intermediate release is said to be coming in a few months, with a bigger redesign in the wings for 2013. Which is good, because while Facebook for iPhone is one of the most popular apps in the history of the platform, it's also been one consistently buggy and, frankly, not a great experience. Getting some former Apple talent behind it is a good thing. These folks have shown they know how to make great looking, great working apps. Facebook, like Google, gets the web but they don't get mobile. Indie developers continue to code circles around these big companies, but finally the big companies have gotten smart enough to simply buy up the great indie developers. It's why Facebook bought and hired the developers mentioned above, it's why they bought Instagram, and it's why they're almost certainly not done yet. Mobile is the future. Facebook knows it. Let's hope the next version of Facebook for iPhone shows it. Oh, and Bloomberg repeats the rumor of Facebook teaming up with HTC to make a Facebook phone with deep social integration. Wasn't a surprise when it was first rumored years ago, isn't a surprise now. If you don't own a platform, you're at the mercy of those who do. It's why Google bought Android back in the Windows Mobile days, and why every company with pockets deep enough to try is working on a phone now. Only question is, how many can the market support, and which ones will they rally behind? Apple and Google? Facebook and Amazon? Microsoft and BlackBerry? Best Buy customers returned Samsung tablets after mistaking them for iPads...
Amid the flood of court documents being released as part of the ongoing Apple vs Samsung courtroom drama, Ina Fried from AllThingsD notes the following line (emphasis mine): Samsung was forced to release a bunch of documents it had been keeping under seal that show the likeness between its products and Apple?s. Examples outlined in the documents include comments from Samsung workers discussion similarities with Apple?s products and reports Samsung got from retailer Best Buy that Samsung tablets were being returned because customers thought they were getting iPads. It's Best Buy customers plural, so we know it's more than one. But no number is given, so we don't know it's more than two. We have not idea how many Best Buy stores the customers were spread over either. It makes for a great headline or pull quote. It may or may not make for good evidence in court. But it almost certainly will get some attention online, and be the subject of a few jokes. But seriously, how many people really bought a Samsung tablet thinking it was an iPad, took it home, and then at some point discovered it wasn't? And at what point did they discover it wasn't? How many really didn't know vs. how many had second thoughts and decided they wanted an iPad instead? And does that say more about Samsung copying Apple design motifs, Best Buy not properly interacting with their customers to assure they're getting what they want to get, or customers just being inattentive? Remember how hard it was for our own Seth Clifford to buy an Android tablet at Staples? It's going to get sillier before it gets saner, folks. Google Gets Scientific, Adds A Voice-Enabled 34-Button Calculator To Desktop And Mobile Search
Oh Google. Sometimes you're so awesome.
Google search has long featured a built-in calculator function but a recent update added a fully functional 34-button scientific calculator. Previously, when a user entered, say, 2+2, Google would simply display the sum above the search result. Now, when that equation is entered into the search bar, the answer pops up along with the new calculator. Best of all, this works in mobile browsers and voice search, too.

Apple secures multitouch-related patent from 1995
According to Network World, Apple recently obtained several patents and patent applications from Canadian inventor Timothy R. Pryor that cover the touch-based control of machines including appliances, vehicles and computers.
The most interesting of the bunch is one that describes a "method for providing human input to a computer." Originally filed in July 2009, this patent describes a data entry device that responds to multitouch input. The data entry device can be used in a variety of applications including video games, aircraft cockpits, or medical analysis.
Another one, Control of Appliances, Kitchen, and Home, describes a home automation system that's part iPad, part Kinect. It uses both a touch-screen interface and a video-sensing component that can detect your presence and respond to your gestures. Best of all, the system "can ease kitchen and house work, while allowing the user to share time for home functions with Internet shopping, social networking and the like."
Of course, ownership of these patents doesn't mean Apple is going to start making a touchscreen-enabled refrigerator-toaster hybrid anytime soon, but it's still fun to think about the possibilities.

Sony Xperia 'Mint' leaked and reviewed: 4.3-inch (?) HD screen, 13MP camera, 1.5GHz S4 processor
While we've been fussing over the Xperia GX (aka the LT29i), it seems Sony's been working on something one integer higher. Mobile-review has published a run-down of a device it claims is called the LT30p -- aka the Mint we first heard of back in January -- which also appears to possess many of the specs we'd want from a high-end phone. The front side hosts a 1280 x 720 4.3-inch LCD, while the rear boasts the same 13-megapixel camera as the GX, and there's a microSD slot on the side too. Internally, Mobile-review says ICS is running off a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, which all sounds healthy enough -- but since the build quality looks a bit suspect and we don't know for sure that this is a final production handset, we'll wait for IFA fever to paint a fuller picture. Update: Although Mobile-review says it has a 4.3-inch screen, a side-by-side photo with the GS III after the break suggests the Mint's panel may be slightly larger than that.Continue reading Sony Xperia 'Mint' leaked and reviewed: 4.3-inch (?) Apple Taps Martin Scorsese And His Eyebrows For The Latest Siri Commercial
The latest Siri commercial just hit, and like recent ad spots, Apple turned to a celebrity to endorse the lackluster iOS feature. And, also like the other commercials, the dialog between Siri and the user seems a bit more simple, almost mundane, in comparisons to the early Siri commercials.
The first several Siri spots were filled with pie-in-the-sky optimism. They were very dreamy and nearly promised that Siri would change the world. But then people started using it and quickly discovered that Siri fell short of expectation.

What the New iPhone Connector Means for Your Old Accessories
If rumors are to believed, the next iPhone will ship with a brand-new smaller dock connector. After nine years of 30-pin connections, Apple could be changing it up. Good news for a slimmer form-factor iPhone, maybe not so much for all those accessories you've accumulated over the years.
Music industry?s anti-piracy playbook revealed: Site blocking, app removal and litigation
A leaked confidential report from the archaically-namedInternational Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has revealed a wide range of strategies being employed by the recording industry to fight piracy, including petitioning for the removal of third-party music apps from app stores and petitioning ISPs to block sites that offer pirated music. The report, obtained byTorrentFreak, shows that the IFPI is advising the music industry to attack piracy with multiple tactics that are divided into five broad categories:Take down, Disruption, Investigation, Lobbying and Litigation.Among other things, theIFPI says the industry should attack companies that advertise on piracy sites by implementing a “structured notice and take down program targeting Google?s (GOOG)AdSense and DoubleClick advertising networks”; create “quick take down agreements” with Google, Apple (AAPL)
Samsung: Apple wouldn?t have sold a single iPhone without stealing our tech
Another day, another Apple (AAPL) vs. Samsung (005930) trial. The two consumer electronics companies are preparing to do battle in San Jose, California next week, and now-public court documents shed light on the positions each firm is taking. On Tuesday, Apple told Samsung exactly what it thinks its technology patents are worth (spoiler: barely anything at all), and subsequent filings from Samsung reveal that the South Korea-based company has a few choice words for Apple as well. As highlighted by The Wall Street Journal, Samsung’s trial brief pulls no punches in telling the court exactly where it stands regarding Apple’s repeated patent-related accusations. In short, Apple is the thief here, not Samsung. A few key excerpts (emphasis is ours): Samsung
Nokia Drive Knows Your Commute By Heart
Nokia recently updated its Nokia Drive application with a new feature called My Commute. With My Commute enabled, Nokia Drive will learn over time the various routes that Lumia device owners take to and from work. The app also learns the general time that you leave for work in the morning, as well as when you leave work in the evening, and can inform the driver of traffic problems in advance so that they may re-route to avoid problems. The update also allows Lumia device owners to pin destinations to the home screen, allowing for one-press access to their route home. Nokia Drive is a free download for the Lumia 900, 800, 710, and 610, and the My Commute feature is available in the U.S. to start. My Commute will be expanded to other markets over time. Nokia also reiterated that it plans to make Nokia Drive available to all Windows Phone 8 devices later this year, including those made by competitors HTC and Samsung. For now, however, it is exclusive to Lumia devices.

Accessory maker Moshi settles patent suit with three firms
The California-based Mac, iPhone and iPad accessory maker Moshi announced yesterday that the company has settled three suits it brought against other vendors. The other companies were allegedly copying Moshi's patented iVisor touchscreen protector, which is designed to be applied bubble-free. Moshi says it has sold more than 3 million iVisor units in iPhone, iPad and Android-compatible forms.
Moshi gained permanent injunctions against PhoneDevil Ltd. and Shenzhen Membrane Precise Electron Ltd. that prevent those two firms from selling products in scope of the patent (US patent 8,044,942, which describes touchscreen protectors with an "air gap" between cover and screen). Both companies are also making financial payments to settle the dispute. This follows an earlier case where Splash Products LLC agreed to pay Moshi a settlement fee and exit the market for these products.
We hear constantly about the patent lawsuits at the top level of the technology industry between giant firms such as Samsung, Motorola Mobility, HTC, Kodak and Apple -- but the same cat and mouse game is taking place throughout the tech sector, much as it is across all business areas. Radian project would deliver time-lapse to iPhone
Time lapse photography can produce stunning photographs, but capturing the images to create the effect can be difficult. Kris Cheng is working on Radian, a Kickstarter camera and iPhone accessory that'll make the process a little bit easier.
The Radian is a hockey puck-shaped device that attaches to your DSLR camera. It fits onto the tripod mount and uses the trigger release input to communicate with your camera. Radian also connects to your iPhone or Android device, which can be used to set the camera options for your time-lapse photo shoot. Once you have the Radian programmed, you can disconnect your mobile phone and walk way confident that Radian will automatically adjust your camera as instructed. Radian also lets you take time-lapse photos with your iPhone, if so desired.
Pledges start at $150 for the standard Radian, and, for a little bit more cash, you can get the charcoal version with some extra goodies like an L-bracket. If funded, Radian is projected to ship in January 2013.Radian project would deliver time-lapse to iPhone originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Wed, 25 Jul 2012 11:45:00 EST. Building an OS X Mountain Lion installer thumb drive
Last year, I posted about creating a standalone Lion USB installer thumb drive. This year, I update those instructions for Mountain Lion.
You'll need a copy of the OS X Mountain Lion installer. If you saved a copy when you first installed Mountain Lion, great. If not, you'll need to re-download it from the Mac App Store.
Launch the App Store and option-click the Purchases tab. An "Install" button should appear next to Mountain Lion. Click it to re-download the installer. You can use this option-click-Purchases trick to re-download any purchase, not just Mountain Lion.
Once the large multi-GB installer finishes downloading, go to your Applications folder to find the installer itself. It is called Install Mac OS X Mountain Lion.
1. Right-click (or Control-click) the installer and choose Show Package Contents from the contextual pop-up. A new Finder browser window opens, showing the normally hidden material inside the installer bundle.
2. Navigate to Contents > SharedSupport. There you'll find a disk image called InstallESD.dmg.
3. Open a new Finder window with Command-N (File > New Finder Window). Navigate to /Applications/Utilities and launch DiskUtility.
4. Attach a thumb drive to your Mac that is at least 8GB in size. Prepare it for use by creating a single HFS+ partition. Select the drive (e.g. SanDisk Ultra) in the left hand column. Drives are listed first with their partitions listed after them, each partition indented slightly.
5. With this drive selected, click the Partition tab and choose Partition Layout > 1 Partition. Choose Format > Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
6. Click the Options button at the bottom-right of the partition layout. Select GUID Partition Table.
7. Click Apply. Disk Utility asks you to confirm. Click Partition. Wait as it unmounts, partitions, and remounts your disk.
8. Next, select the new partition (Untitled 1 by default). Click the Restore tab.
9. Click Install next to the source field. Drag InstallESD.dmg into the file-open window and click Open. Drag Untitled 1 from the left column to the destination field. Click Restore and agree to Erase the drive and replace it with the contents of InstallESD.dmg. You may have to authenticate as an administrator.
10. Wait. It will take some time for the drive to be written. Once it's done, eject it, label it clearly, and either use it to install Mountain Lion on a newly formatted hard drive or if you've already upgraded through the normal installer, put it away for a rainy day.
Those of you who want a more turn-key solution should consider Lion DiskMaker, a donationware AppleScript app that will let you make a bootable DVD or thumb drive from a Lion or Mountain Lion installation program.

Angry Birds with gesture controls collides with select Samsung Smart TVs
We first caught wind of Angry Birds' impending arrival on Samsung Smart TVs earlier this month, and now the war against pigs is available as a free download on some of the company's silver screens. Thanks to a built-in camera and the firm's Smart Interaction tech, which typically help users navigate menus and browse the web, gamers can smash through swine defenses using gesture controls. In order to download the app from the Samsung Smart Hub, you'll need a television in the Plasma 8000 range or a 2012 LED 7500 or higher. If your TV's not as intelligent as Samsung would like, however, the avian protagonists can already stage their skirmishes on your tube with a Roku, and come this holiday season, they'll be soaring on the Xbox 360 and PS3.Filed under: Gaming, Home EntertainmentAngry Birds with gesture controls collides with select Samsung Smart TVs originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 25 Jul 2012 02:26:00 EDT.

Apple 3Q 2012 earnings reported: Another strong quarter
Apple has announced its third quarter 2012 earnings, and the numbers are once again spectacular -- although while the company beat its own guidance, Wall Street analysts are disappointed that the numbers did not meet their predictions.
The company posted quarterly revenues of $35 billion, up from $28.6 billion a year ago. Net profit was $8.8 billion or $9.32 per diluted share, up from $7.3 billion last year or $7.79 per diluted share.
Apple sold 26.0 million iPhones, which indicates 28 percent growth over the year-ago quarter. The big surprise was that the company sold 17.0 million iPads during the quarter, up 84 percent over the previous year. 4 million Macs were sold, representing a 2 percent increase over last year's quarter.
