Didn't get in to WWDC? Try some other awesome developer conferences

Nothing beats WWDC's access to Apple engineers, and the confluence of global (well, provided you were awake in time in certain parts of the globe) attendees. If you didn't get a ticket to WWDC, however, there are still plenty of other great developer conferences for Mac and iOS developers. Here are just a few, but feel free to share more in the comments.

MacTech Conference - There's a developer track here, although MacTech's forte has always been IT. They put on a fantastic event, however, with great sessions, after-hours events that are not to be missed, and camaraderie in spades. Plus, there's a series of IT-focused events around the country now. (Full disclosure: TUAW is a media partner with MacTech.)

360MacDev and 360iDev - Held in Denver, both 360 conferences are developer-specific and crammed with useful sessions led by renowned developers from around the world. I've been to a 360 conference, and I can tell you that what you'll learn after hours is almost as good as what you learn in the sessions. Sometimes a conference benefits from being smaller and more focused. (TUAW is also a media partner with the 360 folks.)

Voices That Matter - Pearson Education has put on the VTM conferences, covering web development, iOS and Android among other topics. There's nothing on the 2012 schedule at the moment, but keep an eye on their site.

SXSW Interactive - OK, this is the least focused of all, but there are usually good lessons to be learned here from seasoned developers, not to mention business people and other industry wonks. Of course, the after hours meetups and interactions are priceless. This is one you can unconference with great results.

Game Developer Conference - This is a game-focused conference for developers and publishers, and has become a great place to meet and learn if you're in the game business. It's not Apple-specific, but is a great place to meet developers and others who can help you build amazing games.

Unite - The explosive growth of the game platform Unity has made their conference a must-attend if you use Unity to make games on iOS. Of course, Unity is a cross-platform tool as well, so expect to rub elbows with web and "other" OS devs as well.

Appsterdam - Not a conference itself, but the European developer collective is a rallying point for a number of meetups and other events in Amsterdam and elsewhere in the EU.

There's also the option of going to San Francisco during WWDC without tickets -- but I'd only recommend that if you have friends who are going.

Other conferences:

CocoaConf - "CocoaConf is a focused two day, three track conference for iOS and OS X developers, with an optional pre-conference iOS tutorial."

One More Thing Conference - "One More Thing isn't a traditional programming conference. It's a meeting for iOS developers, designers and those who just want to come along for the ride."

SwipeConference, in Australia. (Thanks to Mark Aufflick)

Objective-Cologne - An international Cocoa/Objective-C conference in Cologne, Germany. (Thanks to @StuFFmc)

mdevcon - A mobile developer's conference in Amsterdam. (Thanks to Mike Lee & Appsterdam)Didn't get in to WWDC? LG launches LG Cloud, blows raspberries at S-Cloud

Four days before the purported launch of Samsung's cloud service, Korea's other technology giant has unveiled LG Cloud. The eponymous service offers 5GB free space as standard, while owners of LG's Smart TVs or smartphones will get 50GB free for six months. It'll push content between your devices, appropriately compressed for the medium, so high definition images on your TV will be slimmed down to save your phone's data cap. The free beta begins in South Korea and the US from May 1st, with a global rollout pencilled in for next year -- but don't worry, the company made it clear you'll be able to use it on your holidays, if you can find a signal.Continue reading LG launches LG Cloud, blows raspberries at S-CloudLG launches LG Cloud, blows raspberries at S-Cloud originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 30 Apr 2012 08:18:00 EDT. Samsung Debuts Exynos 4 Quad, the Next Galaxy's Engine

Samsung today said that it will use its own, new quad-core Exynos chip in the next Galaxy smartphone, which the company is expected to unveil at an event in London next week. The Exynos 4 Quad is made with a 32nm processes, which provides power savings, and can switch the separate cores on and off, as well as ramp their frequencies up and down to conserve power further. The chip is based on ARM's Cortex A9 design with each core clocked at 1.4 GHz. Samsung believes the Exynos 4 Quad can handle tasks such as 3D games, video editing, and calculation-intensive simulations. Samsung said that it is already sampling the processor to other handset makers in the hopes of winning business away from other chipmakers such as Qualcomm, Nvidia, and Texas Instruments.

Crytek: Used games should be blocked on upcoming consoles

Over the past few months, it has been rumored that the upcoming generation of consoles from Sony and Microsoft will block used games from playing, a move that would kill the entire second market and likely bankrupt retail companies like GameStop.Rasmus Hojengaard, the director of creative development at Crytek, seems to feel that rumor should become fact: "From a business perspective that would be absolutely awesome. It's weird that [second-hand] are still allowed because it doesn't work like that in any other software industries, so it would be great if they could somehow fix that issue as well."If not completely banned, the exec appears to at least want the used game sales truncated."The worst thing that can happen is they [console makers] make something that's very complex for developers, regardless of how awesome it might theoretically be. So getting hardware that allows you to quickly get prototypes up and running, and any kind of scalability they can offer will be great as well, as long as everyone has that scalability and not just a select few."Permalink | Comments

Box releases new API, more OneCloud apps

Cloud filesharing service Box has released a brand new version of its API, allowing iOS and Mac developers to make even easier use of Box in their apps. There several new features in the update, including Instant Mode, which lets developers instantly create and use Box accounts on behalf of their users, smoothing the process for everyone. You can learn more about the API in the video below, and devs interested in using it can find more info on the official blog.

Box has also announced fifteen new iPhone and iPad apps for its OneCloud program. OneCloud highlights apps that can pull files from Box's cloud, edit them, and then send them back, where they can be accessed from anywhere else. Among those apps are a device-to-printer solution called Breezy and a sales catalog app called Handshake. All of the apps added to OneCloud can be found in the full updated list inside the official Box iOS app.

Space travel coming to an airport near you? Maybe, if Skylon keeps its cool

Want to get from New York to Perth in under 4 hours, or maybe just head to outer space on a lark? Reaction Engines' "Skylon" mach 5 spaceplane might be your chariot -- or not. Its scheme of ingesting oxygen from the atmosphere instead of stowing it like a 50-year old modern multi-stage rocket sounds good, but the project's fate may hang on critical new tests. Failure is still a possibility, but if the high-speed, superhot gases can be cooled enough for the hybrid Sabre engines to work, and if Reaction Engines Limited can secure another round of funding, punching your space-ticket could soon be a very real possibility.Space travel coming to an airport near you? Another Apple executive heads to J.C. Penney

Another Apple employee has left for J.C. Penney. Benjamin Fay, who was Apple's senior director of retail real estate, design and development, will head up that department with J.C. Penney. Fay had led the design team responsible for upholding Apple's brand image at its retail stores.

Fay's new boss will be former Apple retail chief Ron Johnson. Both men were noted on the recent issue of a patent for the Shanghai Apple Store design. Last fall, it was reported that Johnson was looking to bring over more Apple employees as he works to repair J.C. Penney's battered brand.

Apple to build large, off-campus cafeteria

Yum. The San Jose Mercury News reports that Apple is building a cafeteria for employees. The new off-site eatery will be more than 21,000 square feet, and it's only for Apple folks.

The News quotes an Apple honcho as saying "We like to provide a level of security so that people and employees can feel comfortable talking about their business, their research and whatever project they're engineering without fear of competition sort of overhearing their conversations," Dan Whisenhunt, Apple's director of real estate facilities, said. "That is a real issue today in Cupertino because we've got other companies here in our same business."

The cafeteria will have a cafe, meeting rooms, lounges and a courtyard. Apple says the facility will be open on weekdays for breakfast and lunch. The cafeteria has just been approved by the Cupertino planning commission. Apple already has five large facilities to provide meals for employees and about a dozen other ones designed for quick snacks. You can find some reviews of food served currently on the Apple campus at Yelp.

Transportation Head Calls for Full Federal Ban on Cell Use In Cars

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood called for a federal law that would make it illegal for all drivers to use cellular phones in moving vehicles. Calling the problem a national epidemic, LaHood cited 3,000 annual deaths attributable to distracted driving as a reason for adopting such a law. LaHood would build the law such that states would be compelled to enforce it in order to receive federal highway dollars. He wants to give police "the opportunity to write tickets when people are foolishly thinking they can drive safely or use a cell phone and text and drive." Using a cell phone when behind the wheel causes as much driver impairment as a blood alcohol level of 0.08%.

Google?s Project Glass: An Exercise In Mediocrity?

So Google X founder Sebastian Thrun was on Charlie Rose last night showing off his latest creation, Project Glass. Which, if you haven't seen by now, is quite possibly one of the most ambitious consumer products to come out of the Googleplex in recent memory. But until Thrun's appearance on Rose, we didn't actually know how the glasses would work other than the sizzle reel that was put together earlier this month.

A couple of things struck me as odd, though. Thrun never actually gave any voice commands during his demo of the glasses, while in the video everything was driven by voice. But that's not what has me worried about Project Glass. During the interview, Thrun snapped a photo of Rose and uploaded it to his Google+ account. So far, it appears to work as advertised but take a look at the image quality and tell me whether or not it's acceptable in this day and age. It's not, it's terrible.

BlackBerry 10 phones later this year; Could be October according to rumor

Just a few days before we get to see what's in store for BlackBerry 10 at BlackBerry World 2012, some more rumors have started floating around about release dates. Some reports are stating that we could see devices in October which would be great, but we're not totally sure just yet. We know the devices will be coming later in 2012, and sometime in the last quarter has basically been the official word. Looking that far ahead, October sounds good, but you know how RIM has been in the past - times can change. An official announcement could come along at any point (we'd love to get a date/expectation at BlackBerry World next week) and as with other RIM devices, it could be just days before an actual release. Hopefully we'll find out some juicy details or a better timeline next week at BlackBerry World, but for now it's still up in the air as to just when the first BB10 device will actually be available. Hit up the comments with your thoughts and let us know when you think we'll see BlackBerry 10 hit the streets. Image Credit: BGR CrackBerry.com's feed sponsored by ShopCrackBerry.com. iPhone, iPad are tops in enterprise activations

During Tuesday's earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook noted that 94 percent of the Fortune 500 are deploying or testing iOS devices. Now those numbers are being validated by news from enterprise mobility tool provider Good Technology.

In an analysis of smartphones and tablets activated by Good's customers made during the first three months of 2012, the company found that the iPhone 4S claimed over 37 percent of all activations -- four times that of any other smartphone. The iPad 2 was in the second place spot for activations with 17.7 percent, while the new iPad (which was on sale for only two weeks during the quarter) was in the number four position with 4.3 percent of all device activations.

What's driving this demand for iPhones and iPads? According to Good, it's both corporate BYOD (bring your own device) programs and "proactive, company-owned iPad deployments." John Herrema, senior vice president of corporate strategy for Good Technology, was quoted as saying that the growth included "users who have both a smartphone and a tablet, with the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 as the most frequently occurring combination."

Awesome Video: Extreme keyboarding on a BlackBerry!

If you saw our post on the BlackBerry Challenge Council's multitasking project but didn't click through to watch the video, you missed out. So here it is again for your viewing pleasure... a good and funny video that puts the focus on one of the biggest strengths of the traditional BlackBerry experience, the physical keyboard! For a lot of BlackBerry loyalists, the one thing more than anything that keeps them on a BB is the physical keyboard. When it comes to pounding out emails, texts, tweets, facebook status message and mores, it can't be beat. Sure, people can learn to type fast on touchscreens too, but the touchscreen typing experience falls apart as soon as you're not standing/sitting still and focused on the task at hand. A little bump or shake and your typing goes to hell. But as you'll see in the video, with a physical keyboard you can keep on typing even in extreme conditions. Just yesterday I was in the back of a bumpy taxi cab heading from the airport to hotel and I was typing like crazy on my 9900's keyboard and thinking about how with a touchscreen I'd be struggling trying to do the same thing. Heck, I even tweeted: All Smartphone keyboard comparisons should be conducted while riding in the back of a taxi cab. Guess who'd win every time? BlackBerry is the answer to that question of course. Sure, a physical keyboard takes up some of the real estate that can go towards a bigger display, but if communication is a priority for you in your mobile device, and for a lot of us it is, the physical keyboard trumps all. Check out the video above and confess your love for the physical keyboard in the comments! Oh, and PS. the keyboard on the BlackBerry Bold 9900 is the best smartphone keyboard ever made. Period. The Profit Is In Another Castle: Nintendo Records First-Ever Annual Loss

Pegatron Corp. Signs Patent Agreement With Microsoft Over Android, Chrome OS Devices

Microsoft snagged another one. Pegatron is the latest company to sign a patent agreement with Microsoft concerning Android and Chrome devices. The exact terms of this agreement were not disclosed, but according to a press release issued this morning, Microsoft will receive royalties from Pegatron under this agreement.

Microsoft's aggressive strategy to license its patents for Android devices is a loaded subject. On the surface it looks like extortion. Google thinks so. But Google is also the company that built the Android platform, seemingly ignoring key patents held by Microsoft. Sure, Microsoft is trailing far behind in the mobile races, but by licensing patents it holds to competitors, the company is just utilizing its assets to make a few bucks. That's not cheating. That's playing smart.

Concept pics emerge of 2006 'Google Phone'

In 2006, two years before the release of the grandfather of Android, the T-Mobile G1, Google had concepts down for the original "Google Phone."Google was going around showing off the concept device to carriers, looking specifically at T-Mobile and their unlimited data plan. The designs are now public thanks to the ongoing Oracle lawsuit against Google over Java patents. In Google's original presentation for the Google Phone, one slide blatantly says [we plan to] "Leverage Java for its existing base of developers. Build a useful app framework (not J2ME). Support J2ME apps in compatibility mode. Provide an opTMobileized JVM (Dalvik)."What Google had in mind for the original phone was an ARMv9 processor running at a minimum of 200MHz, GSM (3G preferred), 64MB of RAM and ROM, miniSD external storage support, a 2-megapixel camera with a dedicated shutter button, USB support, Bluetooth 1.2, and a QVGA display with at least 16-bit color support. In 2006, these specs would have been very close to top of the line, but seem quite laughable now.Additionally, Google did not have touchscreen support as a requirement originally, and baseline specs called for two soft menu keys. Optional specs were Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi, GPS, hardware graphics acceleration and a QWERTY keypad, all of which came together in the GI in 2008.During the original plans, Google already had an early, early alpha of Android, which included a working dialer, messaging app, contacts, home screens, and broken versions of Google Talk, Gmail, Calendar and the WebKit-based Android browser.Permalink | Comments

Verizon ICS update schedule leaks: Rezound, RAZR and Xoom being tested now

While there are already vague Android update plans for Verizon-connected Samsung devices, a leaked screen from somewhere within the Big Red bunker has offered up some more details. According to Droid Life, Verizon's Motorola Xoom (you know, the Android tablet) is getting its update direct from Google, but it hasn't been deigned worthy of a concrete release date. A handful of software updates are also pegged for the likes of the Bionic, Thunderbolt, Revolution, Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Xperia Play, but they look likely to be more incremental than outright OS upgrades. Reuters: Apple in talks to stream films owned by Epix, no deal expected before September

It's reasonably well known at this point that Apple is looking to line up partnerships for some sort of a streaming video service. We've heard again and again that it's coming, so get ready to hum along with that 'ol tune one more time. Reuters is reporting that Apple has been in negotiations with Epix since earlier this year, hoping to secure access to films from Lions Gate, MGM and Paramount Pictures. There's no indication of when such a service might come to light, but Reuters indicates the company's current deal with Netflix, which expires on September 1st, could be a conflict (though that hasn't stopped Google TV in the past). So, no proper Apple-branded TV until the fall? LG Optimus True HD LTE's European assault begins in Portugal, Germany and Sweden

While the latest LTE and HD equipped addition to LG's Optimus line has already landed across Asia (Korea, Japan) and North America (US - AT&T, US - Verizon, Canada) under a few different names, the newly rebranded Optimus True HD LTE is finally prepared for a European debut. As seen by the flags flying above, this week LG will begin rolling out to Portugal, Germany and Sweden, with Britain and France on deck for the second half of the year when LTE service is available. The other flags present represent further Asian rollouts in Hong Kong and Singapore. The plan, described in the Korean press release linked below (Update: English PR after the break), is apparently to make LG synonymous with LTE, although we can't see how renaming its current dual-core standard bearer every other week is helping.Continue reading LG Optimus True HD LTE's European assault begins in Portugal, Germany and SwedenLG Optimus True HD LTE's European assault begins in Portugal, Germany and Sweden originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 27 Apr 2012 00:31:00 EDT. Nintendo reports first annual operating loss, Apple to blame

Nintendo has reported its first annual operating loss ever. The company lost US$454.4 million from 2011 to 2012. The Wii is a few years old now, and the company's latest handheld, the Nintendo 3DS, hasn't been selling near as well as it was supposed to. Nintendo claims it'll turn sales figures around quickly, however. Prices on the 3DS are set to drop, which should prop up sales of that device, and Nintendo is also planning to release a new console unit called the Wii U within the next year.

Why are we posting about this on a blog about Apple? Because while there are a lot of factors involved here, much of this loss is directly the fault of the company from Cupertino. It's true that the reception to the 3DS was poor, and that third-party software for all of Nintendo's platforms has been lacking for a few years. But Apple's iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch have invaded the handheld gaming sector that Nintendo used to dominate, and as a result, Nintendo will have to change its strategy a bit.

You should never count Nintendo out. It's changed industries a few times already (the company originally started by selling trading cards in Japan), and if Apple takes all of its handheld share, there's no doubt Nintendo will find something else. But this is a huge sign that Apple has carved a big piece of the handheld gaming industry out for itself.

I just got the nicest surprise on my iPhone. I don't know how long this has been going on, but my AT&T Pay as You Go feature packs just got much, much better. If you're a PayGo customer for an old iPhone like I am (I use PayGo with my 3GS), your $5 now buys you 50MB.

Ikea cardboard digital camera: when Instagram isn't authentic enough

Forget TVs. Want something more whimsical and lo-fi than Instagram? This is a digital camera made of cardboard that Ikea included with its press kit at this year's Milan Design Week. It runs on two AA batteries (Ikea-branded, natch) and features a swing-out USB plug, viewfinder cutout, shutter key and paperclip-friendly erase button. While there are no details on the sensor, lens or storage capacity, the camera holds up to 40 pictures. It's expected to land in Ikea stores at some point but exact pricing and availability are still a mystery. Sprint sold 1.5 million iPhones to new customers in Q1

Sprint announced its quarterly earnings on Wednesday and the results were disappointing as expected. The carrier posted a net loss of US$863M and cash reserves are now at a razor thin $7.6 billion. In the midst of this doom and gloom, one bright spot for Sprint was the iPhone.

The carrier said in its earnings report that it sold 1.5 million iPhones in the opening quarter. It's a slight drop from the 1.8 million it sold in Q4 2011, but this dip is expected after a holiday quarter. Sprint still trails Verizon Wireless which sold 3.2 million iPhones and AT&T which sold 4.3 million.

Of those buying an iPhone with Sprint, 44 percent were new customers. Sprint said in its earning conference call that 40% of those new Sprint iPhone users reportedly broke a contract to switch to the carrier. About 60% would not have switched if Sprint didn't have the iPhone.

The iPhone is not only increasing sales, it's helping Sprint keep customers, too. The carrier said that iPhone churn rate is low, with significantly less iPhone users asking for support or returning their phone when compared to other smartphone users.

Sprint didn't come out and say it, but it's becoming increasingly obvious that the cornerstone of Sprint's smartphone business is the iPhone.

The chip is based on ARM's Cortex A9 design with each core clocked at 1.4 GHz. Samsung believes the Exynos 4 Quad can handle tasks such as 3D games, video editing, and calculation-intensive simulations. IndieDevLab offers community space near Moscone if you didn't get a WWDC ticket

WWDC sold out pretty quickly yesterday. So what do you do if you want to be part of the dev scene that week? IndieDevLab to the rescue. Monster Costume devs Kyle Kinkade and Nate True and JailbreakCon's Craig Fox quickly started organizing a way for iOS and OS X developers to gather together outside of Moscone.

Offering a community-powered lab space, IndieDevLab will provide power, high-speed wi-fi, air conditioning, and peer support. Located just a few blocks from the Moscone center, Kinkade scored a perfect location to allow devs to meet up, Tweet up, and get their development on.

A three-day hackathon re-mix event will add spice to the festivities.

Kinkade tells TUAW tickets will go on sale at 12PM Pacific. "We want to make sure that West Coast developers have all the time they need to sleep in," Kinkade added pointedly.

If you want to get in on this, make sure to register right away. WWDC is not the only event that's will be in big demand. MetroPCS announces Q1 2012 results: total revenues up, new subscriber growth shrinks

Regional network MetroPCS has announced total revenues of approximately $1.3 billion for Q1 2012, up from $1.2 bilion in the last quarter and up seven percent from the same period in 2011. Users on contract now total 9.5 million, with 16 percent of them making the move across to a smartphone. Net income has, however, dropped 63 percent since Q1 2011, with cost per user up 16 percent compared the same period last year. MetroPCS puts down to "retention expense" and the roll-out of its 4G network. The fifth biggest US carrier added over 131,000 new subscribers, but growth continues to slide -- it's down from 190,000 in Q4 2012. On the positive side, users are creeping onto the carrier's 4G network, with 580,000 LTE subscribers nowmaking up six percent of its total subscription base -- regardless of those creeping costs for unlimited data.Continue reading MetroPCS announces Q1 2012 results: total revenues up, new subscriber growth shrinksMetroPCS announces Q1 2012 results: total revenues up, new subscriber growth shrinks originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 26 Apr 2012 07:34:00 EDT. Sprint confirms unlimited data for next-generation iPhone

In a chat with CNET, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse said that the company would stick with unlimited data for the iPhone, even if the next iPhone comes with LTE. Sprint said in March that they would be able to offer an LTE iPhone when one becomes available.

This comes out the same day that Sprint released its quarterly earnings, showing the iPhone as one of the sole bright spots to its disappointing quarter. The company sold 1.5 million iPhones, with 44 percent of the buyers new customers. However, Sprint posted a net loss of $863 million, further depleting its cash reserves.Sprint confirms unlimited data for next-generation iPhone originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Wed, 25 Apr 2012 15:45:00 EST. Apple CEO Tim Cook acknowledges BlackBerry data efficiency and admits carriers actually care about it

Last night, while covering the Apple Q2 results for iMore, I heard Tim Cook say something that I don't ever quite recall anyone from Apple ever saying before. In response to a question about carrier subsidies on iPhones, and potential pressure, Cook said the following as part of his reply: "Our engineering teams work extremely hard to be efficient with data and differently than some others. And we believe as a result of this iPhone has far better data efficiently compared to other smartphone that are using sort of an app rich ecosystem. Finally, and this is most important, iPhone is the best smartphone on the planet to entice a customer who is currently using a traditional mobile phone to upgrade to a smartphone. This is by far the largest opportunity for Apple, for our carrier partners and its a great fantastic experience for customers. So its a win win win there" Sure, he didn't actually say "BlackBerry" anywhere. But his wording was carefully chosen, as usual. He said Apple is more efficient than other "app rich" ecosystems, meaning Android. By saying this, he clearly recognizes BlackBerry is more efficient. But what surprised me even more was how he even acknowledged the importance of data efficiency at all. In some ways its nice to see Apple acknowledge the importance of something that RIM has been so good at for so long. But it's also clear that consumers don't really care that much about data efficiency. I included the second part of Cook's quote to remind RIM how important it is to compete at the top. Apple is not just going after the smartphone market. They're going after the entire mobile market. CrackBerry.com's feed sponsored by ShopCrackBerry.com. Apple's additional security steps could be better

As we've been hearing, Apple is rolling out some "additional security" for App Store customers. When you go to purchase an app, as I just did (it was the free Pocket app, incidentally), you may be prompted to answer three security questions and provide a second email address in case your primary account is compromised. Unfortunately, this 20th century form-based method of enhanced security is just poorly done. Apple, an innovator in so many ways, can do better.

I knew it was coming but I wasn't quite prepared for the stupidity of the questions. "What was your first car?" is a good example. This weekend I was getting an app for my 8 year-old son and had to answer this. I guess I should have said "Hot Wheels"? "Who was your first teacher?" is a question I simply couldn't remember for me or for my son (are we talking preschool or what?). "Where was your first kiss?" -- really? You mean we might have to be able to accurately type in "In the back seat of a smelly 1990's muscle car"? Possibly on an iOS device? You're kidding us, right Apple?

Again, while I appreciate the effort, this seems like a stopgap measure and it has been confusing quite a few customers -- we have received a few confused emails asking if it was some attempt at phishing. Sigh. Apple has our emails, our account info, access to iOS in ways no other developer can access... Surely this could have been done better.

Instead, we pick three fake answers and had to write them down so we'll remember them. Great security, not. Plus, now we have to remember whether we capitalized our answers, and we have to deal with natural typos, and of course our recovery email is already being used for our alternative Apple ID. Did I mention that all humans must now have two email addresses? Yep, that's a thing now. Tell your kids.

I inadvertently used my @me address when I answered these questions for my son, who, at the time, only had one email account. Where do I change this? You'll have to go to your Apple ID account page here. It baffles me that Apple would manage security this way, however. The business lately hasn't been so much "Think Different" but "target people who are not tech-savvy at all." Guess what? People who don't like technology tend to have ONE email address. Probably one they set up over a decade ago! Now you're asking them to hunt around for another service, or magically suss out that they can create one using iCloud potentially weeks or months after purchasing their iOS device.

We've got another layer of fail slathered over iTunes now, and the chances of our accounts being compromised haven't necessarily been lessened. Instead, our chances of recovering our accounts after they're compromised just got worse.

Here's some free ideas for you, Apple. How about three or four images (like the stock images for accounts on a Mac), asking someone their favorite? Or, by using the technology of touchscreens, have someone draw a simple geometric shape like a parallelogram. There's a microphone and camera on most iOS devices, perhaps something utilizing these technological marvels?

Are Apple's additional security steps frustrating to you, or are you enjoying the feeling of enhanced security?Apple's additional security steps could be better originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 14:45:00 EST. Unlike ?Thermonuclear? Steve Jobs, Apple CEO Tim Cook Says He?d Rather Settle Litigation

Looks like Tim Cook doesn't quite want to go as "thermonuclear" on rival phone makers as Apple founder Steve Jobs did. Cook didn't sound so eager to pursue patent infringement suits against Samsung, Motorola and HTC on today's quarterly earnings call.

"I'd highly prefer to settle versus battle," Cook said. "But you know the key thing that's very important is that Apple doesn't become the developer to the world." He added very pointedly, "I?ve always hated litigation. We need people to invent their own stuff."

His words are at odds with what iconic Apple founder Steve Jobs in Walter Isaacson's biography:

Boston Public Transport Skipping NFC for Barcodes

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has revealed plans for a new smartphone-based ticketing service that will make use of barcodes rather than near-field communications. The system will use software from a company called Masabi that allows passengers to purchase tickets directly from their smartphone. Passengers will then show their smartphone to ticket collectors, which will display an animated watermark with a background color that changes depending on the day. Ticket collectors can also choose to scan a barcode on the smartphone's display with their own smartphone, should they want to verify further the validity of the travel pass. The Masabi system will work with Android, BlackBerry, and iOS smartphones. The MBTA hopes to cut down on the number of tickets purchased on trains and believes this system will help. It said it decided to skip NFC-based systems because the ecosystem is not mature enough and too costly.

Sprint, CWA Ask FCC to Stop the Clock for Verizon Review

A number of organizations have formally requested that the Federal Communications Commission stop the clock on its 180 day review of Verizon Wireless's proposed AWS spectrum purchases. Signees of the request include Sprint Nextel, the Rural Telecommunications Group, Rural Carriers Association, DirecTV, FairPoint Communications, Free Press, Media Access Project, New America Foundation, Public Knowledge, and the Communication Workers of America. The group argues that the deal represents considerable change and consolidation in the industry requiring more detailed review of the details. The groups ask that the shot clock be delayed so they may have "a meaningful opportunity for review of the relevant materials and the preparation of insightful comment on these transformative arrangements." Verizon is hoping to purchase 122 AWS spectrum licenses from a consortium of cable companies.

SpaceX redefines 'fashionably late' as Dragon trip to the ISS is delayed again

Just a week after NASA signed off on its launch, SpaceX has had to postpone the flight of the Dragon. It's yet another delay to NASA's efforts to supply the International Space Station using private spacecraft and reduce the US's dependence on Soyuz rockets. Taking to Twitter, founder Elon Musk said that the company needed to do more testing on the docking code for the capsule, while spokesperson Kirstin Brost Grantham told Space.com that the company needed more time to test and review the hardware. Pending NASA's approval, it'll begin its journey heavenward on the head of a Falcon 9 between May 3rd and May 7th. Given that the original mission was scheduled for November last year, they'll probably need to check the use-by dates on those space rations. Apple will webcast Q212 earnings release conference call on April 24

What is arguably the most anticipated earnings call on Wall Street every quarter will take place next Tuesday, April 24th at 2pm PT/5pm ET. That's when Apple will release its earnings report for the second quarter, which ended March 31st.

There's lots of speculation about whether Apple will hit consensus estimates for their Mac products -- notably iMacs and MacBook Pros, which have not seen major updates in almost a year. However it's generally assumed that the launch of the new iPad in this quarter will help Apple offset any missed Mac numbers.

In the run up to the earnings call this week, Apple's stock has swung wildly, having its largest ever point drop on Monday, followed by its largest ever point gain on Tuesday, before falling over 3% again on Wednesday. AAPL shares are up 45% YTD.

TUAW will have complete coverage of next Tuesday's financial results.Apple will webcast Q212 earnings release conference call on April 24 originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Fri, 20 Apr 2012 10:40:00 EST. TaskMaster for BlackBerry smartphones on sale this weekend only for 85% off

Awhile back we reviewed TaskMaster by S4BB, which helps you never miss another appointment or deadline by eliminating unnecessary steps when creating and managing your tasks. While many of us prefer the BlackBerry task application sometimes it just doesn't have all the features we need to help us stay organized. That's why TaskMaster integrates with the native app and takes things up a notch by adding various features such as multiple category support, the ability to add tasks from other applications (Calendar, Browser, Messages and Address Book) and desktop synchronization. Features Multi-Category Support. Separate Task Reminders. Customizable hot keys. FAST one click category switching. Full featured task support: due dates, priorities, notes, status, etc. Synchronizes with Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes, Act!, Novell Groupwise, iCal, Entourage, and more. 100% compatible with internal BlackBerry Task Application and NextAction!. Enhanced for implementing GTD (Getting Things Done). The one thing though about this productivity app was its hefty $9.99 price tag. S4BB though has decided to place TaskMaster on sale for 85% off which brings down the price to $.99. If you've been meaning to purchase this app but were put off by the amount then be sure to head on over to BlackBerry App World while it's still on sale. The price will revert back to normal on Monday. It's available for most BlackBerry devices running OS 4.2 and higher.

How would you change the Jawbone Up?

Ordinarily, we'd be dismissive if you answered that question with "Doy, make it work!" but in the special case of the Jawbone Up, it's entirely apt. The wristband promised plenty of technological advances that would track your sleep, calories burned and diarize your food intake, all within the confines of a slender cord wrapped around your wrist. The downside? A significant proportion of the units conked out days after being opened, forcing the company to offer no-questions-asked refunds and halt production. So, what we want to know is: do you have a working Up? Does it still work? Do you like it? If Hosain Rahman was reading the comments below, how would you suggest he goes about fixing things? How would you change the Jawbone Up? originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 22 Apr 2012 22:41:00 EDT. Your next smartphone may be able to see through walls

A team of researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas, led by Professor of Electrical Engineering Dr. Kenneth O, have created a technology that could allow future smartphones and cameras to see through walls. The research brought together two scientific advances, one that involves tapping into an unused range in the electromagnetic spectrum and another that deals with a new microchip technology. The terahertz band of the spectrum needed for this technology to function has not been accessible for most consumer devices, however the team is looking to change that. “We?ve created approaches that open a previously untapped portion of the electromagnetic spectrum for consumer use and life-saving medical applications,? said Dr. O. “The terahertz range is full of
