Anime Studio 8.1 is great animation software for beginners

At Macworld | iWorld 2012, I had the chance to sit down with the folks behind Smith Micro's Anime Studio and discuss the latest update to its Anime Studio animation suite. Anime Studio 8.1 allows support for Wacom multi-touch tablets, the first of its kind for a piece of animation software. After Macworld, they sent me a Wacom Bamboo Capture so I could try the software out for myself.

Anime Studio is a vector-based program designed to make the transition to doing your own animation a bit easier. The program assumes you know very little about the animation process, and will ask if you want to enter beginner or standard mode.

I went for the beginner mode and was treated to a very nice, robust tutorial and a pre-made character designed to teach me how everything worked. There were guides cueing me into showing me what parts of the character I could move, and it took very little time to make a crude animation. The amount of flexibility in the program is impressive, and I even had part of my character's face separated from the rest for awhile!

Using the Wacom was especially nice in freehand mode to do doodles, but I will leave the majority of the serious artwork to my comics partner. I would love to see what Isa could do with Anime Studio. I wouldn't recommend the Wacom to a very young child who isn't quite sure of all the controls, but a middle-schooler would be absolutely fine. One of Smith Micro's goals is to get Anime Studio into more schools, and I wish there had been something like this when I was in school.

There's two flavors of Anime Studio: The Pro version runs $199.99 and the Debut version is $49.99. Both are available as 30-day trials, so if you're interested in flexing your animation wings, this is great animation software to help you get started.

Check out the video below from Macworld | iWorld 2012 to see the Wacom tablet in action in Anime Studio.

Supplier Chatter Suggests New HD Models Of Kindle Fire Forthcoming

Early in 2011, upstream suppliers of displays and components let a few of Amazon's secrets into the open, and these early, incomplete indications were actually on whole quite correct. Now we're seeing more of the same kind of thing predicting the coming year's announcements from Amazon, and the predictions seem just as reasonable.

The news is what you might expect: a diversification of the Kindle Fire lineup, with a focus on display quality — and presumably thrift, considering the series' low price.

WSJ: Google will begin selling own tablets this year, open online store

According to the WSJ, Google will indeed begin selling its own tablets this year, as rumored. The move will be a way for the company to drive Android tablet sales, which have been lackluster over the past two years in competing against Apple.Over the past few months, rumors have surfaced repeatedly that Asus is building a "Nexus" tablet that will sell for $150 and include specs that beat out the $200 Amazon Kindle Fire. The tablet will feature "vanilla" Android 4.0 or even Android 5.0 Jelly Bean, staying away from user interfaces like HTC's Sense or Samsung's TouchWiz. Jelly Bean is expected to be launched in June.More importantly, Google will open its own online store to sell the tablets, similar to how it sold the Nexus One in 2009. That move should help the company better compete with Amazon and Apple, who promote their products right from their highly trafficked homepages.Permalink | Comments

Foxconn reduces working hours, workers ask why

The Fair Labor Association released its first report about the conditions it found in Foxconn factories during a recent investigation. The report details over 50 violations that center on excessive overtime and low pay. To improve the working environment, Foxconn has vowed to slash overtime without decreasing workers compensation. This change, however, has Foxconn workers concerned says a Reuters report.

Some employees are afraid less hours will translate into less money, a situation they don't want. "We are worried we will have less money to spend. Of course, if we work less overtime, it would mean less money," one 23-year-old employee told Reuters.

Another worker said, "We have just been told that we can only work a maximum of 36 hours a month of overtime. I tell you, a lot of us are unhappy with this. We think that 60 hours of overtime a month would be reasonable and that 36 hours would be too little."Foxconn reduces working hours, workers ask why originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Fri, 30 Mar 2012 09:15:00 EST. Best Buy To Shut 50 Stores In Streamlining Effort

TechCrunch's Best Buy tag isn't exactly a heartening place to visit. In the last few months, it "stole Christmas," been "finished," and is now "going out of business." Dire straits indeed for a company that has defied the odds not only against big retail competition but against deadlier online opponents as well for nearly 50 years.

But an announcement today seems to give a little weight to the doom and gloom expected from a tech community that views Best Buy as an anachronism. Best Buy will be closing 50 of its big box stores and laying off some 400 people, mostly on the administrative side. Is it rightsizing or just plain attrition?

Google Drive cloud storage platform coming in April?

After years of rumor, it appears that Google's cloud storage platform "Drive" is finally ready to be launched.According to Om, the platform will launch in the first week of April with 1GB of free storage for users.Market leader Dropbox offers 2GB of storage and easy ways to gain more. Amazon, Apple and Microsoft also offer cloud solutions with more free storage, putting Google at a disadvantage right from the start, at least in terms of available space. However, the API is expected to allow third-party apps to store data to your Drive, which would be a fantastic addition for Android owners. If accurate, you could back up all your apps and data right to Drive and restore it from another device when you log in, similar to how Titanium Backup uses Dropbox if you have a rooted device.Last month, a leaked screenshot of the interface made its way around the Web, showing a deep integration with the Google suite of applications and services.Permalink | Comments

Update: New iPad Runs 4G? Not In Australia, Says Consumer Watchdog. Apple Now Offering Refunds

One of the selling points for the new iPad has been the fact that it supports 4G, but at least in one market, that 4G promise is facing a challenge. In what might be a case of a storm in a teapot, the Competition and Consumer Commission in Australia has said that Apple cannot advertise its newest tablet as 4G-capable because it doesn't actually work on the 4G network that exists in the country.

The regulator plans to take its argument to federal court this Wednesday, where it will try to order Apple to change its marketing of the product. It also wants Apple to offer refunds to any buyers that feel they have been mislead by the advertising.

Steve Jobs reportedly disliked "Siri" name

Network World's Yoni Heisler attended Technori Pitch in Chicago yesterday, and related a story about Siri that not only sheds new light on the name of Apple's intelligent assistant, but on Steve Jobs' low opinion of the name.

Technori Pitch is a monthly meeting where Chicago-based startups can tout what they're working on, and yesterday's speaker was none other than Dag Kittlaus -- one of the founders of Siri. The company was bought out by Apple in April of 2010 for US$200 million, and of course Siri became the outstanding feature of the iPhone 4S.

We had always heard that the Siri name was a play on SRI International, the contract research institute founded by the trustees of Stanford University in 1946. Siri was a spinoff company of SRI before its purchase by Apple. However, in yesterday's talk, Kittlaus noted that "...Siri means in Norwegian, 'beautiful woman who leads you to victory.' I worked with a lady named Siri in Norway and wanted to name my daughter Siri and the domain was available. And also consumer companies need to focus on the fact that the name is easy to spell, is easy to say..."

Kittlaus, who was the CEO of Siri, was invited to talk with Steve Jobs at one point for three hours at the late Apple CEO's home. Kittlaus noted that Jobs really didn't like the Siri name, but Kittlaus kept pushing him to keep the name. When Jobs couldn't find anything better, he decided to stick with Siri. Similar stories have come up about the naming of the iMac and iPad, both products that were given names that Jobs initially hated but eventually came to like.Steve Jobs reportedly disliked "Siri" name originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Wed, 28 Mar 2012 15:00:00 EST. FTC's 'Privacy By Design' Idea Will Impact Mobile

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission published a set of recommendations it believes businesses and the government should adopt when it comes to the privacy of American consumers. The FTC has five main items in the new privacy framework it wants to see addressed. The one item applying chiefly to mobile devices would require web sites and/or services to offer privacy policies that are "short, effective, and accessible to consumers on small screens." The FTC also wants to see Do Not Track more widely adopted and standardized; data brokers identified on a central web site where they explain their data policies; comprehensive tracking policies devised; and methods developed for the industry to self-regulate these codes. The FTC wants it to be easier for consumers across the web to know where, why, when, and how they are being tracked, and what's done with the data that is collected. It also wants the web to adopt an opt-in model. The recommendations need to be assessed by congress.

Keep your 15" MacBook Pro cool with the madMINDS TILT

The MacBook Pro is the workhorse of the Apple portable computing line, with the power and screen real estate to keep even professional video editors happy when they're on the road. All that power generates heat that can sometimes add up to an uncomfortable user experience, especially if you're using the MacBook Pro as a true "laptop" computer. A new product from madMINDS LLC, the TILT (US$55.00), resolves that issue by providing active cooling in a wafer-thin stand that beautifully compliments the design of the unibody MacBook Pro.

Design

The TILT got started as a Kickstarter project last fall and achieved $22,075 in funding for a $8,000 goal. Now that production has started, the TILT is available only for the 15" unibody aluminum MacBook Pro. Fortunately, my wife happens to use one of those as her home computer, so I was able to get a review device to test.

The TILT comes in a very thin cardboard box wrapped inside a cloth bag. It's light, adding about 1.1 pounds (.5 kg) to the weight of your 15" MacBook Pro. It's made of a plastic material that looks virtually identical to the aluminum MacBook body. On the bottom of the TILT is a threaded hole for a tripod -- this seems odd, but is perfect for photographers or videographers who take their MBP to the field for backup or immediate processing of images. Just take the MBP, attach it to the TILT, put it on top of a tripod, and you've got a great way to keep that laptop at the proper height whether you're sitting or standing.

Gallery: The TILT by madMINDS

Inside the TILT is a small USB powered fan that sends a cooling blast in one side of the case and out the other. The TILT will use one of the USB ports on the left side of your MBP, so keep that in mind if you are the type of person who tends to have a lot of accessories plugged into your ports.

One all-important question is how well the TILT holds onto your MBP. The TILT uses a latching mechanism that clicks into the back hinge area of your MacBook Pro, and once I figured out how to get it secured, the TILT held on like it was glued. It's also easy to take off, so when you don't need the cooling, the TILT can be easily removed.

Functionality

The main selling point of the TILT is that it is supposed to cool your MacBook Pro, so I took the temperature of my wife's computer with and without the TILT attached and working. As you can see, the temperature in the battery pack didn't change much at all. However, the big change was in the temperature of the CPU.

My only complaint about the TILT so far is that the fan noise, while incredibly quiet, is still noticeable. If you're used to having your MacBook Pro fans kick in to cool your baby while you're editing video, then the TILT fan probably won't bother you. On the other hand, if you usually don't notice fan noise from the MBP, the TILT will definitely bother you.

Conclusion

The TILT is a well-designed, good-looking and functional piece of hardware that does exactly what it's supposed to do -- keep your MacBook Pro cool. For photographers and videographers who might want to mount their MacBook Pro on a tripod for easy access, it's one of the few ways (perhaps the only way?) to get that done.

And now we're going to give away this TILT to one lucky TUAW reader. Remember that this only works with the unibody aluminum 15" MacBook Pro that has been around since late 2008, so please don't enter the giveaway unless you have that particular model. Here are the rules:

Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia and Canada (excluding Quebec) who are 18 and older.

To enter, fill out the form below completely and click or tap the Submit button.

The entry must be made before March 30, 2012 11:59PM Eastern Daylight Time.

You may enter only once.

One winner will be selected and will receive a madMINDS TILT for 15" Unibody MacBook Pro valued at $55.00.

Facebook is too friendly; new app helps users make enemies

At its core, Facebook is a social network built on the premise that people want a central location where they can keep track of and interact with all of their friends. With nearly a billion active monthly users, the site’s strategy is seemingly in line with the wants of the masses. One developer seems to think the world’s most popular social network is too bright and cheery, however, and he recently released a Facebook app that looks to rain on users’ parade. EnemyGraph is a free Facebook app that serves a single purpose: it allows users to name their enemies. With this free app, people can list any entity on Facebook ? a person, a company, a group or anything

LG Spectrum Review: This Is One Ugly Sumbitch

The LG Spectrum has spent a long while with me. In fact, LG's asking for it back, saying that my review period has come to an end. I didn't get around to the full review until now because (to be perfectly honest with you) I didn't really want to sit down and talk about the LG Spectrum for X amount of hours.

True, there's nothing necessarily "wrong" with the phone. It's got solid specs, performs alright (I guess), and has a downright gorgeous display. But at the same time, there's a long list of issues that I have with the phone, and most center around design.

Sony Shakes Things Up Under New CEO, Reorganizes For The Post-PC Era

Sony enters a new era April 1st. On that day Kazuo Hirai will replace Sir Howard Stringer as Sony's president and CEO. The challenges ahead are massive; Sony is facing a financial and organizational calamity. Sony is simply too big and has fallen too far and Hirai is tasked to bring Sony back to glory.

Sony just announced a new corporate organization that shows drastic change is underway. Under this strategy, dubbed One Sony, separate Sony divisions will share management, hopefully streamlining decisions and creating a more unified end-user experience that better utilizes Sony's content offering. Sony under Stringer was an unwieldy multi-headed beast. Hirai is clearly trying to tighten the reins. It just might work and it has to work.

Sideload apps on your BlackBerry PlayBook without a PC using Localbar 2

If your PC seems to be standing in the way of you sideloading apps to your BlackBerry PlayBook, Localbar 2 may be just what you're looking for. You may recall the original Localbar that popped up back in November. It worked like a champ, but RIM quickly found a fix and it was dead in the water. Localbar 2 brings back the same functionality -- letting you install BAR files directly to your PlayBook without the need of a Windows PC or Mac. Localbar 2 uses a proxy to get the job done, so it will take a bit of setup before you can get everything running smoothly. Just follow the instructions and you'll be able to get setup and be up and running in no time. Sideloading from a computer isn't all that hard, but if you want to cut out the middle man, Localbar 2 may be the way to go. You can always get the job done from on your PC by following our simple guides for both Windows or Mac. After the initial setup, sideloading any BAR files to your PlayBook is a breeze. If you still want to go the Localbar 2 route, hit the link below for more information and to download. More information/Download Localbar 2 CrackBerry.com's feed sponsored by ShopCrackBerry.com. TeleNav today announced a new web-based service called Scout for Apps. The service is being offered to developers, who can incorporate TeleNav's HTML5 voice-guided GPS navigation service directly into their own web apps. TeleNav is also offering Scout to consumers, who can point their mobile browsers to Scout.me to get web-based directions on their phone. TeleNav said that Scout.me has been optimized for the iOS browser, but not yet for the Android browser (though it will still probably work on an Android device). BlueStacks App Player hits beta, supports ARM-written Android apps on x86-based Windows (video)

We've been eagerly anticipating the full-on release of BlueStacks' App Player, so imagine our excitement, now that the software has officially made the leap from its brief alpha stage to "beta-1" status. If you'll recall, the App Player can virtually run over 450k Android apps on Windows XP, Vista and 7, all without developers needing to tweak their respective coding. Notably, this latest build has a host of updates including LayerCake, allowing x86-based machines run apps written for ARM -- and with hardware graphics acceleration, no less. Other notable goodies from the beta build include official localization in 10 countries, mock accelerometer support (arrow keys), an updated UI and Direct AppStore Access. If the mere thought of running Android Angry Birds on Windows has your interests piqued, you'll find further details about BlueStacks in the full press release and video overview past the break.Continue reading BlueStacks App Player hits beta, supports ARM-written Android apps on x86-based Windows (video)BlueStacks App Player hits beta, supports ARM-written Android apps on x86-based Windows (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 27 Mar 2012 08:00:00 EDT. Spain's Falles celebration invades Apple Store

I would probably describe Apple Stores as "busy," "happening," or maybe even "populated," but I wouldn't have ever described them as "boisterous" .. until I saw the videos below. These two videos are via ifoAppleStore and were recorded at the Apple Store Calle Colón in Valencia, where the local celebration of Falles, to commemorate St. Joseph, has spilled over into the iPhones and iPads. As you can see, a band takes up residence right there in the MacBook section, and while some of the customers look a little frazzled, it does look like a great time.

Kudos to the employees for clapping along, too -- I used to work in retail, and I know that as fun as it would be to have live music playing, it would make my job of helping customers and securing the store just that much tougher. But they handle it as well as expected, given that the festival is basically a continuous party over the better part of a week. Viva el iPhone!

High-res Mountain Lion art could point to Retina Macs in 2012

Apple developers test-driving the latest Mountain Lion (10.8) release may have noticed some higher-res graphics erroneously popping up in "unexpected places," such as the double-size phone icon that appears alongside an audio chat invitation in Messages. One such dev reported his findings to Ars Technica, as you can see evidenced in the graphic above. This mild slip-up could imply that Apple plans to release Macs with high-density displays later this year, or, at the very least, that Mountain Lion will be Retina-ready. High-res support dates back to OS X Lion, which is reportedly equipped to play nice with HiDPI displays, should they eventually become available. Compatible icons are but a second piece of the puzzle, which could be completed to the tune of deliciously dense 2880 x 1800 (or higher) resolution 15-inch LCDs. Wouldn't you love to see that.High-res Mountain Lion art could point to Retina Macs in 2012 originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 23 Mar 2012 11:09:00 EDT. iPad Smart Cover issue apparently due to magnet polarity

Many customers bought a new iPad last weekend, and some found that Apple's Smart Cover doesn't work with certain previously Smart Cover-compatible cases. Mark of Mark's Hangout has discovered why, and he's posted a detailed explanation.

It appears that Apple added a polarity-sensitive sensor to the new iPad, and that the original Smart Covers were made with magnets facing in either direction. Later model Smart Covers don't exhibit this behavior. We can only assume Apple made an adjustment when it refreshed the line in October.

Mark had help from an independent case manufacturer in sussing out the problem. You'll find all of the details here. He also pointed out that if you have an incompatible Smart Cover you can get it swapped out at the Apple Store.

NVIDIA CEO suggests Kepler GPUs could be headed to future 'superphones'

NVIDIA looking for a piece of next-generation smartphones shouldn't come as much of a surprise to anyone, but CEO Jen-Hsun Huang dropped a few details in a recent email to staffers that's sure to spur at least a little excitement. New iPad?s A5X Processor Holds Few Surprises Despite Enormous Size

Initial teardowns of the new iPad whetted many a chip nerd's appetite when they revealed that the A5X chip inside was truly gigantic. At nearly 13x13mm, it is significantly larger than the A5, which was itself already kind of a hefty bugger.

Now some clear images (from Chipworks) have been taken of the die itself (some rather rough ones with initial "floorplans" showed up earlier over the weekend) and it's becoming more and more clear that the A5X is a stopgap measure: a last-generation product that's overcompensating, if you will, with a jumbo-sized GPU.

Baldur's Gate coming to iPad

An enhanced edition of Baldur's Gate was announced this month by developers Overhaul Games (which includes a few devs from Bioware that worked on the title originally), and now there's even better news: That enhanced version is also making its way to the iPad. The game will be out on Apple's tablet at the same time as the PC release, and it will include all of the updates and new content as the other platform. Additionally, there will be iPad-specific controls, such as pinching to zoom in and out and dragging to choose units to control. While they're not done yet, Overhaul says there will be more touch-friendly menus and buttons in the interface as well.

Which is just awesome, if you ask me or any other old-school gamer with fond memories of the Baldur's Gate series. We'll obviously keep both eyes out for this one. U.S. Cellular today announced the availability of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. It is the first device to be sold by U.S. Cellular that can access its nascent LTE 4G network. The LTE network is active in just a handful of markets so far, including Madison and Milwaukee, Wisc.; Wichita Falls and Lawton, Okla.; Portland, Houlton, Augusta, and Bangor, Me.; Greenville and Elizabeth City, N.C.; and Des Moines, Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, and Davenport, Iowa. According to U.S. Cellular, it will light up LTE in cities in Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, New Hampshire, Oregon, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia by the second half of 2012. US Army debuts app marketplace prototype: iOS first, Android coming soon

The promise of an Army app store has been bandied about for quite a while now, but it looks like it's slowly becoming a reality. The US Army has today officially announced a prototype of the Army Software Marketplace, a web-based app store that currently includes twelve different training apps that have been approved for Army-wide use. That includes just iOS apps initially, but the Army promises that it will soon include apps for Android devices as well. It's also of course looking to expand considerably beyond those dozen odd apps, noting that the prototype is just "a first step in establishing and exercising new submission and approval processes that will eventually enable Army members, organizations and third-party developers to release applications for Army-wide distribution." And you thought the approval process for some of the current app stores was stringent. Should Apple Make The iPad User-Serviceable? Nope, That?s Anti-Consumer

For better or worse, we live in a society that discards broken items. The day of replacing a burned-out motor in a blender is past. Very few household items are designed to be fixed by the owner or even repair shop. HDTVs, microwaves, even benchtop woodworking tools purchased at big box warehouse stores are designed to be replaced, not serviced. Desktop computers are the main exception to this rule. This shift to disposable appliances has allowed manufacturers to more quickly innovate rather than supporting older products. They really don't make them like the used to, but, in a way, that's sort of good thing.

iFixit caused a bit of ruckus late last week when the service company awarded the new iPad with a 2 out of 10 on their user repairability score. iMore took it one step farther. They both noted that since the front glass is essentially glued onto the bezel, it greatly increases the chances of cracking the screen. That's not good for the old school repair shop, but it's awesome for the consumer. Making gadgets non-user serviceable is one of the best things Apple has done.

Netflix updates iPad app for Retina display

Updated to clarify that the app changes affect UI elements only, not video quality.

Netflix has rolled out the Retina-ready version of its video streaming app for the iPad. You can grab it for free from iTunes. The video service requires a minimum $7.99 monthly subscription.

Of course, the iPad's display is actually much higher resolution than even an HD video stream -- there's no change to the streaming quality in this build (Netflix says HD streaming is coming soon) but at least the app's interface elements will look razor-sharp.

New feature list:

- Improved artwork for new iPad Retina Display

- Fixed VoiceOver support

- Improved playback on external displays

- Numerous fixes and stability improvementsNetflix updates iPad app for Retina display originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Wed, 21 Mar 2012 18:03:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.Source | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sony Xperia's 'Made of Imagination' TV spot, directed by Wes Anderson (video)

Sony certainly has its fair share of legendary commercials, but its first major spot since taking over the smartphone torch from Sony Ericsson is a real gem. Dreamed up by an eight-year old longing for understanding of what happens within a pocketable computer and directed by the famed Wes Anderson (you know, the guy responsible for The Royal Tenenbaums and Fantastic Mr. Fox), the 'Made of Imagination' ad features a gaggle of robots powering Sony's Android family. The rest, of course, we'll leave to you to enjoy. Head on past the break for the clip, and have a peek at the TechCrunch via below for a bit of the backstory.Continue reading Sony Xperia's 'Made of Imagination' TV spot, directed by Wes Anderson (video)Sony Xperia's 'Made of Imagination' TV spot, directed by Wes Anderson (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 22 Mar 2012 08:28:00 EDT.
