Apple announces March 7 iPad 3 event
Apple sent out invites today for an event that'll take place at 10:00 am on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. The event flyer shows a buttonless (or landscape) iPad and promises there will be something we really have to see and touch. We expect Apple to unveil the iPad 3. We don't know the exact details on the upcoming iPad, but, if the invite picture is any indication, the iPad 3 will have a high-resolution display, a major bump in the processor, Siri and possibly LTE. I've already got the date marked off on the calendar and my iPad 2 on eBay, how about you?Apple announces March 7 iPad 3 event originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Tue, 28 Feb 2012 12:28:00 EST. Fuzhou Rockchip announces RK30 for the budget tablets of today
Budget ARM licensee Rockchip has been bawling out its wares on the streets of Barcelona as the company announces its newest RK30xx platform. Rockchip provide the internals for a variety of low-cost android tablets, often based on last year's technology. The newest system will be based on ARM's dual-core Cortex-A9 CPU, Mali-400 GPU and Artisan Physical IP Process Optimization Pack (nope, us neither). The chips will clock to 1.4GHz and be able to decode 1080p video and even support 3D displays. The whole package will ship as a "turnkey" solution, i.e. one any manufacturer can buy in bulk and shove inside a tablet, meaning that plenty of the budget slates released in the second half of the year will have identical internals. First engineering samples arrive in March and if you're interested in starting your own tablet business, head on past the break to get the details.Continue reading Fuzhou Rockchip announces RK30 for the budget tablets of todayFuzhou Rockchip announces RK30 for the budget tablets of today originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 28 Feb 2012 15:33:00 EDT. Quad-core, 4G LTE iPad 3 rumored for next week? in New York?
Ready to add more quad-core, 4G LTE rumors to your iPad 3 stack? Well, you better be because CNBC just tweeted the following:
Under 1 million Google TV devices are actively used
According to info hidden in Google's own data, there are less than 1 million Google TV devices being actively used. Also notable is the fact that Logitech's Revue set-top is the most used GTV device.GigaOM found the figures in Google's Android Market stats, which publishes rounded numbers on every application's install base. Each Google TV device comes with pre-installed apps, which Google lists in the Android Market, as well. The TV and Movies app (which is built-in and is the most important app in the platform) is listed as installed on 500,000-to-1 million devices which implies that active users are under 1 million, although that number has a big range.Data mining firm Xyologic seemed to confirm the fact, estimating that the most important pre-installed apps are on around 600,000-900,000 Google TV devices. The Logitech Revue, which launched at $250 but was quickly discontinued and sold at $99, is the most popular device, controlling 50-70 percent of the market (depending on what figures you see).Second-generation Google TV devices are rolling out soon, with Vizio, Sony and LG all announcing TVs with ARM chips and the platform, which will bring down the price.Permalink | Comments
iMac Wi-Fi Update 1.0 resolves wake from sleep issue
On Friday, Apple released iMac Wi-Fi Update 1.0, a small 1.3 MB update that is recommended for all iMacs (late 2009 and newer) running OS X 10.7.3. This appears to be a very specific update to resolve a very specific issue -- there's no other word from Apple on additional issues with iMac Wi-Fi that may have been occurring. You will have to reboot after installing the patch. Adobe Photoshop Touch brings the flagship retouching app to the iPad 2
Adobe has finally gone and done it. An iPad version of Photoshop called Adobe Photoshop Touch is out for the iPad via the App Store. It's tremendously impressive and to a lesser degree a bit frustrating. Let's start with the good stuff, because there's plenty of it. Getting a sophisticated photo app running on the iPad is no small task. It requires many controls and a lot of ways to complete tasks that differ from their counterparts on the desktop. Adobe has given this a lot of thought, and while Photoshop Touch isn't as full featured as Photoshop CS5, it brings a boatload of functionality to the tablet which will make every photographer anxious to buy the US$9.99 app without hesitation. Here's a brief run down of the features: Layer Support Image browsing from Facebook and Google Image search Selection tools Filters (including sharpen, gaussian blur, drop shadows, bevels, gradient maps, pencil, scratches and 21 more) Curves, shadow/highlight adjustments, temperature, replace color, black and white, invert, brightness/contrast, and noise reduction Editing features including crop, image size, add text, warp, add gradients and more If you use Photoshop, most of these tools will be familiar to you. New tools include the Scribble Selection Tool (which allows you to select and extract parts of an image) among others. When you are done editing your image, you can save it to your camera roll and share it via email, Facebook or Adobe Creative Cloud (after creating a free account). Adobe Creative Cloud offers 2 GB storage for free. You'll be able to buy more when the service comes out of beta later this year. At that time Creative Cloud will be a $49.99 yearly subscription. Once your image is on the Adobe servers, you can download it on any other device with web access. The app does not support Apple's iCloud. You can print your image via AirPrint if you have supported printers or an OS X app like Printopia. Using the app was fairly intuitive. There are 13 built-in tutorials and a link to online help, though there's no complete help document. The tutorials are not in video form, but rather step-by-step directions that you can move forward and backward through as you choose. I found the instructions effective and easy to understand. If you are already a Photoshop user, you understand the concepts of making adjustments to an image. If you are not already Photoshop-savvy, the basics aren't hard to pick up. I'd like to see many more tutorials, and I hope future updates will add them. You can get an idea of the depth of the features in Photoshop Touch by looking through the screenshots I've posted. There is a lot to this app, and most Photoshop functions are carried over other than masks. There are some negatives, of course. The most glaring issue is that the maximum output size of an image is 1600 x 1600 pixels. This is simply too small, and is much less resolution than output by the iPhone 4 (2592 x 1936) and 4S cameras (3264 x2448). I can assume the resolution was held down to keep performance snappy on the iPad, but I would expect an app with these features to handle higher resolution images. Maybe the rumored iPad 3, with what will likely be better specs, can do more. While the app supports layers, which is a major positive, there are some limitations. For example, if you add a text layer, you can't go back and edit the text. You'll have to delete the layer and start again. Another limitation is that saving an image means losing layers, as files are saved as JPEG images to your iPad camera roll, or when you send them via mail or to Facebook. If, however, you save to the Adobe Creative Cloud, layers are preserved. You can download the image from your Adobe storage but you'll note right away that the image is in PSDX format and Photoshop won't load it. To fix this you must download the Creative Cloud plug-ins from Adobe so Photoshop CS5 can open your file. Note: CS5 or 5.5 is required, so earlier versions of Photoshop won't load the files at all. Photoshop Touch has familiar tools like the lasso tool, but placing boundaries precisely is difficult because your finger covers up the screen. A stylus might be more practical for that kind of work, and of course Photoshop Touch provides some more automated selection tools. My tests of the app were positive. Overall performance was good. It can take a few seconds to render some effects, that's to be expected. Features worked with no issues, and for a first iPad version I saw no bugs, freezes or crashes. In my tests, Photoshop Touch was solid. Overall, Adobe Photoshop Touch is a tremendous achievement. Ever since the iPad came out, it has been criticized as a consumption device, and not a creative tool. Photoshop Touch is yet another app that has made that argument seem nonsensical. Any serious photographer should consider buying this app. No, it's not the full Photoshop experience. I wouldn't expect that in a $10 app. Rather, I think of it a bit more like Adobe's Photoshop Elements. It's scaled down from Photoshop, but contains the most used and wanted features. I am still troubled about the file size limitation. That's what I'd like to see Adobe fix first. There are other photo editing apps for the iPad that preserve the original file size, so it's not impossible. Photogene is just one example of many iPad apps that can output files at original resolution. Adobe Photoshop Touch is a 50 MB download, and must run on an iPad 2. The original iPad just doesn't have the horsepower to make the app viable. Photoshop Touch requires iOS 5, and you'll want to sign up for the Adobe Creative Cloud if you want to work on your images on Photoshop CS5 and keep your layers intact. This is a great first effort from Adobe for the iPad. Photoshop Touch will only get better over time, but as it stands now I think many photographers, both pro and amateur, will want this reasonably priced and powerful photo editor. Check the galleries below for a look at Photoshop Touch being used. Chipmaker Elpida doesn't last the month, files for bankruptcy protection
The Japanese chipmaker Elpida Memory, whose CEO noted the company's "uncertain future" earlier this month, has filed for bankruptcy protection.Elpida's move is the largest corporate failure for a Japanese manufacturer since World War II.Liabilities, as of March 2011, were $5.5 billion and the company's desperate attempts to refinance or get a bailout from the Japanese government failed.Elpida was Japan's last DRAM maker and the company was ultimately done in by a Yen at its strongest levels since the end of World War II. Furthermore, South Korean rivals like Samsung managed to take large market share in a short period of time thanks to cost efficiency.Samsung had 45 percent share as of September 2011, followed by Hynix at 21.5 percent and then Elpida and Micron at 12.1 percent each. The company hopes to re-emerge under the supervision of the Tokyo District Court, says the WSJ.Permalink | Comments
Report: Apple iPad 3 will not have quad-core processor
If a new report is accurate, Apple fans may not be so happy when the iPad 3 is launched next month. The device will use a more powerful dual-core processor, an "A5X," instead of the expected quad-core A6, as Apple has not had time to perfect the A6.BlueFin Research Partners analyst Steve Mullane cites the supply chain, notably Samsung, in the report, which claims the manufacturer was not properly equipped to produce the 28nm A6.Reads the note: "[Samsung's] Austin logic fab - supports the mass production of the 45-nanometer AAPL A5 processor, and is ramping on a 32-nanometer process. Since the A6 processor is based on a 28-nanometer process, we believe the 32-nanometer ramp validates the recent rumors that the iPad 3 will likely use a higher speed, die-shrink version of the A5 dual-core processor, named the A5X processor, as opposed to the next-generation A6 quad-core processor."If accurate, the A5X will certainly be powerful (perhaps even with a clock speed of 1.8GHz or higher) but with Android devices already out with quad-core chips, and more coming, Apple may need to step up its other features.Permalink | Comments
RIM and TAT demo BlackBerry PlayBook wireless document sharing at Mobile World Congress
[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ] With Mobile World Congress now officially open to the masses, RIM has been showing off not only the unofficially announced DLNA portion of BlackBerry smartphones at their booth but also a brand new wireless file sharing concept app for the BlackBerry PlayBook designed by The Astonishing Tribe. By taking a couple of BlackBerry PlayBooks and sitting them beside each other, folks can share documents by essentially swiping them onto one another's screens. All in all, pretty awesome implementation for file sharing but of course the real question is -- when can we all have it? We've got some time set aside with RIM tomorrow, so we'll be getting a better look at all this functionality and hitting them with some one-on-one questions then. Daily iPhone App: Monopoly Hotels checks in on EA's freemium expertise
Zynga's gotten a lot of flak for creating basically a clone of Tiny Tower, and you could make the argument EA has done the same thing with its new freemium title Monopoly Hotels. The game features a set of freemium goals as you set up a series of businesses in Monopoly's famous establishments, and just like Tiny Tower, you're recruiting guests, building shops, and so on. But while Monopoly Hotels is definitely influenced by the popular freemium trend, there's enough here that it's really a different game. There's not nearly enough love for the craft as Nimblebit puts into its titles, but there is some really good thinking about reward cycles (money occasionally falls from the sky in Monopoly Town, tasking the player to grab it by tapping away with glee), enough to suggest that if you're all done with Tiny Tower, this one's probably worth a look as well. Of course, EA is shameless with the product placement, so you can build rooms branded around Mr. Potatohead and My Little Pony, and even the rooms themselves (you start by building a "horse room," a gardening themed-room, and a cupcake store) are squarely targeted at the younger, more feminine audience. But the game is well-designed anyway. It's a nice chance to see what a big but open-minded studio like EA can do with the freemium genre (largely led, so far, by indie developers, or at least developers that used to be indie). If you're not a young girl or a freemium junkie, you might find this all a little boring, but hey, it's free. BlackBerry App World Integrated Carrier Billing gains momentum
Mobile World Congress kicks off today and while we haveSimon Sage is there in Barcelonagetting us goodies, though we're not expecting there to be huge news on the BlackBerry front. However, today RIM has announced that there are now over 40 carriers around the world that have integrated carrier billing for customers to purchase apps through BlackBerry App World. Some of the carriers include: A1 Telekom (Austria) AT&T (United States) Bell (Canada) Digicel (25 markets in the Caribbean and Latin America) Indosat (Indonesia) Rogers Wireless (Canada) SFR (France) Telefonica (UK) T-Mobile (United States) Telus (Canada) Telstra (Australia) Vodafone (Spain, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Portugal, United Kingdom & Netherlands) Carriers have seen an increase of 120% in app downloads by introducing carrier billing, so it is expected that more carriers will start to integrated carrier billing in the future, making it easier then ever for folks to purchases apps. read moreCrackBerry.com's feed sponsored by ShopCrackBerry.com. Google: 450,000 Android Apps now available to 300 million devices
If you hadn't noticed, it's Mobile World Congress this week and Google's showing off its enormous booth packed to the gills with smiling green Androids. Andy Rubin insouciantly added that the Android Marketplace has reached its latest milestone: there are now 450,000 apps available for the platform. Other pertinent stats are that over a billion apps are downloaded every month and that 850,000 Android devices are activated each day -- meaning that there's more than 300 million of them worldwide. Of course, that's not the real story here at MWC, it's that the company have brought along a bedazzling booth for guests to glue as many false jewels to their Galaxy Nexus back-plate as their self-respect can handle.Google: 450,000 Android Apps now available to 300 million devices originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 27 Feb 2012 05:44:00 EDT. Android apps more expensive on average than iPhone counterparts
As an unabashed iPhone fan, I often ask owners of Android smartphones why they chose their phone over an iPhone. Answers have included "I like larger screens and styluses" (from a Samsung Galaxy Note owner), "There are more choices," and the ever-popular "iPhone apps are so expensive!" Well, a Canalys survey released today is throwing that last response into the dustbin of questionable excuses. The Canalys survey cited in a post on Apple 2.0 notes that on average Android apps cost more than two-and-a-half times as much as their iPhone counterparts. When Canalys looked at the cost of the top 100 paid-for apps in the Android Market, the grand total was US$374.37. The top 100 iPhone apps tallied up to $147.00. Canalys cited two factors for this discrepancy. First, Apple's more controlled retail environment allows in-app purchases and drives competition in app prices; second, Android phone owners are less willing to pay for apps, driving developers to charge more to break even. Analyst Rachel Lashford of Canalys noted that "achieving big volumes of paid apps on Android is no small challenge," and she believes that more aggressive price competition within Android apps would encourage more consumers to make their first app purchases. That, in turn, would drive greater volumes of downloads and help the Android app ecosystem. You might wonder if there is an overlap between the best-seller lists for the Android Market and the App Store. Only 19 apps appeared on both lists, and the pricing was usually higher for the Android apps. As an example, EA's Monopoly game is on both lists and has a price tag of $4.99 for Android and just $0.99 for iPhone.Android apps more expensive on average than iPhone counterparts originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Thu, 23 Feb 2012 18:00:00 EST. iFixit examines alleged iPad 3 display, confirms doubled resolution
Mac Rumors recently got its hands on a component that's allegedly the display from the forthcoming iPad 3. After putting it under a microscope, the site was able to confirm that the display has a 2048 x 1536 resolution, double the horizontal resolution and quadruple the number of pixels on the iPad 2's current 1024 x 768 LCD. iFixit has been able to confirm Mac Rumors' findings; Mac Rumors actually mailed iFixit the same display and let them have a look at it. iFixit confirmed that the display has the same overall dimensions as the iPad 2's display (though the "iPad 3" display is 0.6 ounces lighter), and microscopic examination of the display confirmed a 2048 x 1536 resolution at 260 pixels per inch, far higher than the current iPad's 132 ppi. In its examination iFixit confirmed that this display features a different display connector from the iPad 2 display, so even if you could secure one of these displays on the aftermarket, there doesn't appear to be any means of successfully hooking it up to an iPad 2 or original iPad. No surprises there. iFixit suggests the new display's ppi might be too low to qualify it as a "Retina Display," while others have quite erroneously suggested that the iPad 2's current display is already Retina quality (in spite of Apple never classifying it that way and despite the current iPad's pixels being easily discernible even with my less than stellar vision). However, we did the math on this last year, when the iPad 2 was rumored to be getting a Retina upgrade, and the numbers tell a different story. The only consistent definition Apple has ever given about the Retina Display is that individual pixels are indistinguishable from one another. This statement comes with several implied asterisks: pixels are indistinguishable for people with 20/20 vision when held at a reasonable distance. An Air Force bombardier holding an iPhone 4S four inches from his face is going to see those pixels easily, but his 87-year-old grandma isn't going to see them no matter how hard she looks. Running the numbers shows that this display would meet the "Retina Display" requirements of indistinguishable individual pixels for someone with 20/20 vision if held at a distance from the eye of 13 inches or greater. I don't see too many people holding their iPads closer than that, so despite having a lower ppi density than the iPhone 4S display, the "iPad 3" display easily meets Apple's somewhat fuzzy Retina Display qualifications. Standard caveats apply: the iPad 3 hasn't even launched yet, so this is all speculative. However, it's worth noting that the iPhone 4's display leaked through the same channel -- aftermarket component resellers -- months before its debut in summer 2010.iFixit examines alleged iPad 3 display, confirms doubled resolution originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Thu, 23 Feb 2012 19:00:00 EST. HTC One S hands-on at MWC 2012 (video)
The second of the One. That's another way to describe the HTC One S, the mid-range selection in the Taiwanese company's trio of new devices. Even though it should be considered middle of the road when being compared to a heavy hitter like the One X, it's not hurting for features in the slightest. The S's claim to fame is its scratch-resistant and durable aluminum backing, and adds a highly respectable list of mouth-watering specs to go along with it. Let's have a look-see: 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED panel, 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, the same 8MP rear camera found on the One X along with a VGA front-facing cam, a smallish 1,605mAh battery and 42Mbps HSPA+ radios (which will come in handy when it shows up on T-Mobile this spring). While we've had the chance to drool all over its bigger brother, the One S still satisfies in nearly every way. The aluminum build was forged using a Micro Arc Oxidation process, and indeed affords us a feeling of security in case the skinny device were to slip through our hands. Given the firm grip we had on it, the chances of something like that happening would be rather slim anyway -- still, better safe than sorry. And the dual-core S3 chipset doesn't disappoint, either, and is going to be a slightly less expensive alternative for anyone who isn't a power user. Add in the same beautiful f/2.0 camera lens with all the Sense 4.0 trimmings, and this will likely stand well amongst its peers. As with the One X, we'd still prefer to see a physical camera button to take full advantage of the swift shutter speed and simultaneous video / still image capture. Smarter Apps Releases Google+ App for BlackBerry With Instant Photo Upload and More
Smarter Apps has just launched a beta version of its Google+ app for BlackBerry. One of the coolest features of the app is that it lets you automatically upload images to Google+ that you take with your camera. Generally, we don't hear of many people using Google+ and it seems like a pretty lackluster social network, but perhaps this BlackBerry app will bring some new interest in the social network from #teamblackberry.
Sony Xperia P hands-on
What can you say about the Sony Xperia P that you haven’t already said about the Xperia S and U? The middle model in Sony’s NXT line-up, the P gets some of the S’ expansive screen but shares some of the U’s pocket-friendliness. It’s also one of the more sturdy devices we’ve played with. More [...]

Free Foodspotting App for BlackBerry Now Available for Download
Foodspotting is a pretty cool service that capitalizes on the "foodie" movement. Foodspotting is a community of people who are taking pics of the food they're eating and contributing to a new form of food discovery. Looking for something good to eat around you? It's great to see a picture of the food and let the people eating it make up your mind for you. No more complaining that the pic on the menu is different than what's on your plate.
Samsung Toiling Away On Bezel-less Galaxy B Smartphone?
Judging by the way Samsung is trying to eliminate bezels from their products, you'd think Samsung found that extra rim of material offensive somehow. The consumer electronics titan is already working on ridding your next television from the confines of a bezel, and if a new report South Korea's Maeil Business Newspaper holds true, one of their next smartphones will be the first to feature an edge-to-edge screen.
Aside from a small area along the top of the device that houses a speaker and a front-facing camera, the screen on the Galaxy B is reported to cover all of the device's face.

Bungie co-founder starts new mobile studio
You know Bungie, the game studio that developed Marathon and Halo? Well, one of its founders, Alex Seropian, is now working on a new mobile-focused project. He's one of the brains behind Industrial Toys, a start-up development studio that intends to focus on mobile titles for core gamers. "We are driven to innovate beyond industry standards and trust in these inherent truths: that the future of gaming is about being accessible without sacrificing quality," says the company on its Facebook page. Industrial Toys has a star lineup; working with Seropian on the project is former Bungie veteran Brent Pease and Seven Lights alum Tim Harris. Cloud storage apps - what are they and how do they work?
Dropbox and Box.net have been in the news recently, updating their apps and giving away tons of free space, so it's understandable that a few of us are wondering what the heck they're all about. Sure, you know you get Gigabytes of space, and great looking apps, but what exactly do they do, and how do they work? We're about to tell you! I'll focus on Dropbox here. I'm not recommending it over any of the others, but they are all similar and we've already got all our stuff uploaded there and we're too lazy busy to switch. Dropbox is storage space, reserved for you, on a computer somewhere in San Francisco. Other services, like Box.net or Ubuntu One may be in different cities, but they all are in big fancy data centers where nerdy people type in the command window all day and night to keep things running smoothly. They aren't just old Windows machines sitting in a basement somewhere, they are dedicated places designed to hold lots and lots of data. They routinely make backups, and have excellent uptime -- your data is going to be there when you need it to be there. They also use things like SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and AES-256 encryption to make sure nobody can peek at your files without your login credentials. Your stuff is safe in these types of cloud storage centers. Things like file encryption and obfuscation are best left for another day, so we're not going to discuss that type of security -- just don't do anything illegal, OK? read moreCrackBerry.com's feed sponsored by ShopCrackBerry.com. NHK's new Super Hi-Vision sensor captures 8K at 120fps, fast enough for Usain Bolt?
As amazing as Super Hi-Vision televisions are, most of the footage we've seen is of slow-moving cityscapes, nature and portraits. We may get more action sequences soon, thanks to a new CMOS sensor capable of picking up 8K (33MP) footage at 120 frames per second. The joint project between NHK, Shizuoka University and the Research Institute of Electronics is being shown off on the 27th at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference The chip is developed on a .18 micrometer process, with an enhanced analog to digital converter that enables the faster frame rates. That cut down data processing time and power consumption, all key to getting some sweet super high res televisions (16x more pixels than your current HDTV) in our living room sooner rather than later. Our only question? If they can build a new camera around it in time to catch the world's fastest human being do his thing at the 2012 London Olympics.NHK's new Super Hi-Vision sensor captures 8K at 120fps, fast enough for Usain Bolt? originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 25 Feb 2012 16:22:00 EDT. NVIDIA gets big names to embrace DirectTouch tech in Tegra 3 devices (video)
Synaptics, Atmel,N-trig, Raydium, Cypress and Focaltech -- big names in the field of touch-based devices -- have all agreed get on board with NVIDIA's DirectTouch platform. The tech offloads some of the work needed to track and process finger input from the controller to the Tegra 3, improving response and battery life. We were first introduced to the architecture at CES, but wasn't clear that others would embrace it. With two of the biggest makers of touchscreen controllers, Synaptics and Atmel, throwing their weight behind the project, though, things are looking up for NVIDIA-powered tablets. N-trig is even leveraging the processing power to improve the response of capacitive styli by combining DirectTouch with DuoSense (the tech behind the HTC Flyer). iPad 2 vs. PlayBook 2.0: Tablet Smack Down!
A 10 Round Head to Head Smack Down comparing Apple's iPad 2 w/ iOS 5 against Research In Motion's BlackBerry PlayBook on it's newly updated 2.0 operating system software Two months ago it might have seen crazy to speak of the iPad 2 and the BlackBerry Playbook in the same sentence. The iPad 2 is the grand-daddy of the tablet world and the Playbook was received like the poor step child. No native email, contacts or calendar - only useable with a BlackBerry Smartphone - the list was lengthy and the comparison of the two tablets was not a fair fight. Enter Playbook 2.0. Now we are back to square one and the battle is on. Much is new in Playbook 2.0 and much is improved from when the Playbook first hit the shelves last April. One factor that we are not looking at for the "competition" but users should think about is price. Currently, a 16GB iPad 2 will set you back $499.00 and a comparable PlayBook 2.0 can be had for $199.00. So, now its time for the ultimate battle - it is David vs. Goliath - Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Mohammed Ali. There will be 10 rounds in this battle. We will use the 10 point must system - meaning that the winner of each round gets 10 points and the loser gets a lower number. We will look at both devices in detail and put them to the test. Will it be a knockout? Will it be a draw? You might be surprised to see the results....read on. read moreCrackBerry.com's feed sponsored by ShopCrackBerry.com. iPad 2 vs. PlayBook 2.0: Tablet Smack Down!

Mobile World Congress 2012 preview: what will we see?

Dropbox app drops the beta: automatic photo upload goes official on Android, coming soon to iOS
While those lucky beta testers managed to get a healthy lump of extra Dropbox storage for their efforts, the mobile app's new auto-upload feature has officially arrived. The update is now available on Android devices and we're promised that the Apple-flavored update will appear very soon. We've been playing with the beta for the last few weeks, and it's pretty simple stuff, maintaining the file size of your mobile shots and delivering them to Dropbox's storage in the sky. You can toggle the auto-upload feature, or assign it for use only when there's an available WiFi connection. CNBC: Sprint Board Nixed MetroPCS Acquisition at Last Minute
Sprint's board of directors apparently pulled the plug on an $8 billion acquisition of regional carrier MetroPCS "hours" before the deal was to be announced. CNBC reports that Sprint and MetroPCS had been working on the deal for months, and that Sprint CEO Dan Hesse had signed off on the deal. CNBC didn't say why Sprint's board killed the acquisition. Sprint is the nation's third-largest operator and is in the middle of a vast network transition. Acquiring MetroPCS could have given Sprint more spectrum assets.

iFrogz' Boost speaker out now
Even a couple of months after the fact, I have to say that iFrogz' Boost speaker was one of the most interesting things I saw at CES this year. It's a little box speaker that works, more or less, like magic. There are no wires or hookups necessary. All you do is set the Boost speaker down, put your iPhone right on top of it as seen above, and then the speaker somehow amplifies your iPhone. It's not super loud, but it's more than enough for just a desk speaker, or maybe something small in the bedroom. As far as I can tell, it simply works by "listening in" to whatever is coming out of your iPhone's speaker with a really close-up microphone, and then just amplifying that audio as best it can (the device is powered with a few batteries, so that would make sense, if it's making more sound on its own). What's most surprising about all of this, however, is how exact the unit must be -- I moved the iPhone around quite a bit on the unit, and it really only works if the iPhone is sitting in exactly the right place, which means that mic, if that's indeed what's happening, must be very finely tuned. At any rate, the Boost is an interesting device -- there are quite a few speakers out there, but I haven't seen anything like this, that doesn't require any wires or hookups at all (aside from the old school megaphone style amplifiers, I mean). The Boost is available for $39.99, and if you have a place to use it, it might be worth picking up.iFrogz' Boost speaker out now originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Wed, 22 Feb 2012 19:00:00 EST. NVIDIA Rebrands The Tegra 3?s Architecture, Wants Everyone To Now Call It A 4-Plus-1 SoC
Nvidia unveiled the Tegra 3 platform last year at Mobile World Congress. Since then the chip has lived its short life mostly misunderstood. You see, it's a quad-core chip with another 500MHz companion core that handles low-power background tasks -- an architecture Nvidia previously called variable symmetric multiprocessing. But that's a mouthful and likely a bit hard to properly market to consumers.
From here on out Nvidia wants the Tegra 3 to be called a 4-Plus-1 chip, m'kay? Nvidia even went as far as trademarking the new name.

Dumb Buyer Beware: Chinese State Police Seize Hundreds Of Fake Apple iPhone? Gas Stoves
Today I learned a gas stove labeled as an iPhone cannot take Instagram pics, make phone calls and probably isn't a real iPhone. But some Chinese consumers might not be as educated. Good thing the Chinese state police is always ready to enforce trademark infringement and recently seized 681 so-called iPhone gas stoves.
These stoves, produced by "Apple China Limited", would likely be a hot seller in the official Apple merchandise store, giving Apple engineers and fanboys a humorous party conversation piece. Or, for Foxconn workers, it could be a great space heater.

NPD: Apple Still On Top In Mobile PC Shipments, But HP Takes The Cake In Notebooks
The PC industry is in decline, unless of course you count tablets. NPD is apparently doing just that, leaving Apple in the top spot among mobile PC vendors.
According to the firm, Apple shipped nearly 23.4 million mobile PCs in the fourth quarter of 2011, which is 128 percent year-over-year growth. Cupertino shipped over 62.8 million mobile PCs over the entirety of 2011, representing 132 percent year-over-year growth.
Of course, these numbers include the iPad, which makes it easy to understand why the rest of the pack is so far behind. The company shipped more than 18.7 million iPads in Q4, which means that nearly 80 percent of its mobile PC shipments can be attributed to the tablet. Apple shipped 48.4 million units in 2011, up 183 percent year-over-year.
This left Apple with a 26.6 percent share in the industry, and three times as many units shipped as the next mobile PC vendor in line: HP.

White House gets behind online 'bill of rights,' companies to adopt 'do not track'
President Obama is throwing his weight behind a consumer bill of rights that includes protections against online companies in particular, and aims to safeguard customer privacy. While the plan doesn't come prepackaged with a new set of laws for companies to abide by, the Commerce Department is working to develop enforceable policies with help from the concerned parties. The bedrock of the new bill of rights is that consumers should have control over the kind of data companies collect and what they do with it. Internet firms would have to be transparent about what information is gathered and how it's used. There is also a call for limitations on the use of certain personal data. As part of the push a number of major players in the field, including Google, have agreed to include a "Do Not Track" button in their browsers and to honor the system -- the latter being a tiny detail that has made implementations of the feature ineffective until now. The Rural Telecommunications Group, Rural Cellular Association, the Media Access Project, and Public Knowledge today joined T-Mobile USA by filing a petition with the Federal Communications Commission asking the government body to prevent Verizon Wireless from acquiring spectrum assets from cable companies. Verizon is hoping to purchase blocks of 700MHz and AWS spectrum for $3.6 billion from Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks, and Cox Communications. The RTG accuses Verizon Wireless of "systematically attempting to corner the market for commercial mobile wireless spectrum while simultaneously stripping existing and potential competitors of all their spectrum holdings. This practice is anticompetitive and a violation of antitrust law and should result in the FCC's denial of all of the applications filed by Verizon Wireless." The RTG, RCCA and others also accused Verizon Wireless of violating the Communications Act of 1934 and the Sherman Antitrust Act.
Apple and Foxconn offer ABC clarifications on iFactory tour report
The other night, ABC's Nightline got to investigate the humanitarian conditions of Apple's factories, and though there were certainly some interesting findings, there are a few details that Apple and Foxconn wanted to clarify.
NPD: Apple Still Leads Tablet Shipments, But The Fight For Second Place Rages On
Another day, another take on Amazon and Apple duking it out in the tablet market. The data comes from NPD?s DisplaySearch wing, and the results don't come as much of a shock. By their count, Apple is still sitting at the top of the heap, accounting for 59.1% of the tablets shipped in Q4 2011 while Amazon is sitting pretty in second place with 16.7% of tablet shipments under their belt.
At first glance, the results seem very similar to those announced by iSuppli this time last week ? the only major shift is that iSuppli has book retailer Barnes & Noble slightly ahead of Asus.

Magnetic retainer lets you operate machinery with your tongue, gives linguistics new meaning
Many people with debilitating conditions rely on sip and puff technology to get around, which is relatively lo-fi by some standards. Now, a special retainer with magnetic sensors could bring mobility into the smartphone age. Developed at Georgia Tech, the Tongue Drive System uses a magnetic piercing to track lingual gestures. The sensors then transmit data to an iOS app that translates it to on-screen or a joystick movement. Earlier versions used a headset, but the prototype revealed at the International Solid State Circuits Conference in San Francisco, is hoped to be more comfortable and discreet. The system is currently being trialled by 11 participants with high-level spinal-cord injuries, with larger trials planned.Continue reading Magnetic retainer lets you operate machinery with your tongue, gives linguistics new meaningMagnetic retainer lets you operate machinery with your tongue, gives linguistics new meaning originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 22 Feb 2012 17:36:00 EDT. Should You Upgrade To Mountain Lion?
Mountain Lion, Apple's latest version of OS X, is currently in beta. However, it is in a stable enough form that some journalists were given sneak peeks over the past few days. I've been working with the OS for most of the last week and weekend and, as a public service announcement, I'd like to state that while Mountain Lion is a compelling upgrade to OS X it's not currently ready for prime time.
To be fair, the worst version of OS X I ever used was an early build of Lion. This build essentially rendered my machine useless and made me cry uncontrollably when my Time Machine backups failed. Never, as they say, again.
However, being a glutton for punishment, I gave Mountain Lion a spin.

Bug in iOS 5.0.1 allows unauthorized access to your contacts and call history
A new bug found in iOS 5.0.1 may allow an unauthorized user to access your contacts, make phone calls, or use FaceTime on your passcode-protected iPhone. But stop panicking, this bug isn't easily reproduced - it requires you to have either no service or the sim card removed. Your average snoop won't find it worth their time.

DevJuice: ShipIt! provides customizable image resizing for multiresolution development
ShipIt!, currently on sale for $0.99 at the Mac App Store, offers a simple utility for resizing multiresolution images. Its suite of standardized image formats (such as 512x512 iTunes artwork, 57x57 iPhone icons, and 72x72 iPad ones) ensure that you can create consistent elements from your core art. Drag your art onto the app window, choose a destination and the formats you wish to export to and the app creates the resized elements. As utilities for a buck go, ShipIt may save you a bit of time if it fits into your development flow. I found its user interface to be a bit crude, with the step-by-step process at the bottom of the window not really working for me. I would have preferred to see more state information onscreen. When you pick the default output folder in "step 1", that directory is not visible anywhere onscreen. I also wish the export file types were integrated into the main window instead of floating. As the floating window is, it cannot be resized. This means you can't just have all the elements visible on-screen at once. What's more, the checkboxes didn't act in a standard OS X way -- they sometimes resisted attempts to uncheck them if they were the sole item selected. In the end, ShipIt! seems to have the right idea but could use work on how it gets you to that place. We don’t hear much from NEC here in the US on the tablet/smartphone front, but in Asia the company has several products that fall under those categories. Most of what we get from NEC in the US are projectors. NEC has unveiled three new Android 4.0 LTE handsets in Japan, and two of them look [...]

Video from ABC's Nightline report inside Foxconn
ABC New's Nightline will air what they're calling an "unprecedented" look inside Foxconn's Chinese factories that manufacture several Apple products. The report will air next Next Tuesday, February 21, but a brief glimpse is available now. A promotional piece shows ABC reporter Bill Weir entering the factory and having a look around. We also see the nearly countless people lined up outside in hopes of getting a job assembling devices. Blackberry Playbook 2.0 Update is Available Now, the Time for Android Apps has Come
I have to be completely honest about this – the Blackberry Playbook may still be my favorite tablet. While the lack of apps and features at initial release killed it before it even got its start, the UI that RIM has put together on a tablet makes more sense than most. So when the 2.0 [...]

NoiseHush NX26 HD Stereo Headphones [Accessory Review]
"NoiseHush combines comfort with quality and puts in all in one afforable package" In Short: "Quality, comfort and price make them a no brainer" Should I Buy? "Don't sacrifice quality, allow your music to sound its best." BUY NOW With Mobile Nations Fitness Month well underway, and my healthy eating in place, and my motivation at an all time high it was time to grab (against my own word) a nice pair of headphones that would help reduce the background noise to keep me focused. A huge part of my work out routine is my music playlist, and I am extremely particular when it comes to audio quality when listening to the music, but at the same time reducing background noise is equally important. When on the elliptical or on a run the last thing I want to be hearing is noise from my feet hitting the ground or the subtle squeaks of the machine, and the NoiseHush NX26 HD Stereo headphones do an excellent job of just that. read moreCrackBerry.com's feed sponsored by ShopCrackBerry.com.
