Russia looking into implementing the BlackBerry PlayBook and banning the iPad for government use

Last week RIM announced that the BlackBerry PlayBook was granted FIPS 140-2 certification. This makes the PlayBook the first tablet to be approved for use by US federal government employees, which is a pretty big thing. It seems this is opening up doors in other places as well, as Russia is now looking into banning Apple's iPad for government use, and looking into the PlayBook as a more secure alternative.

The reports suggest the government is still deciding whether it will use devices from RIM, tablets running Google Inc.?s Android software or a new device created by a Russian agency using ?a variety of security systems.? The implementation of a more secure system will help ?speed up workflow among agencies? according to the report.
If true, the backing of the Russian government could prove to be another victory for RIM as it seeks to use its reputation of prioritizing security technology to position the BlackBerry PlayBook as the tablet of choice for businesses and governments, the way it originally marketed its BlackBerry smartphones.
Indeed, it was RIM?s security technology which helped the company?s BlackBerry devices to become the gold standard of mobile devices for government agencies around the world, including the Canadian government and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation.

If this goes through, it could go a long way towards regaining some of that market share that Research in Motion has lost in recent months, as Russia would possibly be the first of many governments to adopt the tablet for use. BlackBerry has long been known for putting security at the top of the priority list, and the PlayBook has been no exception to this standard which may prove to be a big advantage.

Google refines search experience for big-fingered tablet owners

Having trouble selecting those tiny links with your big, ol' digits on that swanked-out slab? Don't you worry, Google's just made some slate-friendly improvements to its bread and butter search site, and it's available for iPad and Honeycomb 3.1+ users. On deck for this UI refresh: a much simplified search results page, larger-sized buttons and text, and a quick access button located below the search box that skips you off to "Images, Videos, Places, Shopping and more." There's also been some visual tweaks made to its image search results, with enlarged previews, faster thumbnail loading and continuous scrolling. If you're not seeing this overhauled layout just yet, sit tight -- the update's expected to roll out in the next few days.Google refines search experience for big-fingered tablet owners originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Jul 2011 22:12:00 EDT. TaskRabbit iPhone app lets you crowdsource your tasks

TaskRabbit is a unique service that lets busy people offload their tasks to those willing to do them. It costs a small fee, but you can have your groceries delivered, laundry done and dogs walked before you return home from a busy day at work.

When it launched, the service was web-based only, but TaskRabbit recently developed an iPhone app that lets you manage your tasks on the run. You can create a new task, monitor the progress of a task and even price a task using information based from the TaskRabbit service. It lets you add descriptions using a voice recording or images so the person completing your task knows exactly what to do.

It's an interesting use of modern technology that melds your mundane routine with the power of the crowd. And it's now on the iPhone.

AT&T to throttle smartphone data starting October 1st

AT&T said on Friday that it will begin throttling unlimited smartphone data plans as of October 1st. “Like other wireless companies, we’re taking steps to manage exploding demand for mobile data,” AT&T said Friday in a statement. The carrier continued, “One new measure is a step that may reduce the data throughput speed experienced by a very small minority of smartphone customers who are on unlimited plans – those whose extraordinary level of data usage puts them in the top 5 percent of our heaviest data users in a billing period. In fact, these customers on average use 12 times more data than the average of all other smartphone data customers.” AT&T was very careful to mention, repeatedly, that the

Dear Aunt TUAW: If I sell my old Mac, does Lion go with it?

Dear Aunt TUAW,

So, the last time I sold a Mac I bundled it up with my Tiger install discs and sent it on its way, but having installed Lion on my MacBook and readying my bank account for the impending purchase of a MacBook Air, what happens to Lion when this laptop goes to the big eBay in the sky?

Can I sell something on if I don't own the physical product?
If it's tied to my iTunes account does it take records of my associated email account with it?

Your loving nephew,

Matt

Dear Matt,

Auntie is not a lawyer. She does not even play a lawyer on TV. But as a completely unqualified non-expert, here's how the matters seem to shake out.

App Store Lion licenses follow the account and not the hardware

Pre-installed licenses follow the hardware, and not the account

The install process from the recovery partition seems to follow the hardware as well.

Preinstalled Lion

Here's what Apple says about hardware that came with Lion.

If you obtained the Apple Software preinstalled on Apple-branded hardware, you may make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your license rights to the Apple Software (in its original form as provided by Apple) to another party...

Hardware that already had Lion on it, can be sold and the license transfers with it. You can restore the machine to its virginal state and sell it off. The new user should be able to use the recovery partition to re-install the OS whenever needed. Your e-mail should not be involved.

Since the hardware is newer, should the hard drive fail, the user should be able to use the over-the-air restore process.

That process does not seem to involve any user authentication. The hardware likely checks in with some kind of central Apple database that associates the machine ID with shipped-with-Lion install, but Apple is being closed lipped as usual in disclosing how the eligibility is determined. Auntie guesses it's the hardware identity.

Upgraded to Lion

For pre-Lion hardware, Apple takes a firmer line. Here's what they say about selling systems to third parties.

If you sell your Apple-branded hardware to a third party, you must remove the Apple Software from the Apple- branded hardware before doing so, and you may restore your system to the version of the Apple operating system software that originally came with your Apple hardware (the "Original Apple OS") and permanently transfer the Original Apple OS together with your Apple hardware...

So as far as Apple is concerned, you still "ship with DVDs" but you also need to downgrade to the original OS. That means completely wiping the drive to remove the recovery partition as well as experiencing all the joys of an OS re-install from DVD.

Auntie suggests another way. Starting in August, you will be able to purchase an install dongle at the Apple Store. That additional $69 may simplify the whole process and the questions behind it ownership transfer.

When you ship a dongle along with a newly dongle-installed machine, you ensure that the new user can start fresh and will have a full license of their own. Of course, that extra $69 takes a bite out of your profit margin. But you'll be selling Lion-installed hardware rather than whatever your system started out with. (Do make sure to send the original install DVDs as well.)

Dongle installs shouldn't be associated with your identity either. So again, you should be safe there as well.

Hugs,

Auntie T.Dear Aunt TUAW: If I sell my old Mac, does Lion go with it? originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Fri, 29 Jul 2011 13:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.Source | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Fusion Garage's Grid 10 tablet clears the FCC, begs us not to call it the 'JooJoo 2'

If at first you don't succeed, discontinue your product, carry on a lawsuit, and then try again. That's the story thus far for Fusion Garage, the company behind the failed JooJoo tablet, an overpriced, hard-to-use slate that proudly omitted all the things people like about tablets -- you know, like apps. After the underwhelming sales figures started rolling in, Chandrashekar Rathakrishnan, the company's founder, admitted that perhaps some people might sometimes be interested in doing things other than surf the web. That was the end of JooJoo, though he promised, ominously, that we hadn't seen the last of Fusion Garage. Well, here we are: the troubled company just sent another tablet through the FCC, and no, it's not called the "JooJoo 2." Rather, this one's dubbed the "Grid 10" -- a likely attempt on Fusion Garage's part to distance itself as much as possible from its embarrassing (and messy) entrance into the tablet market. For now, though, that's near-impossible, especially given that this FCC report contains precious few details about what this thing will be capable of. No word either on when the JooJoo will rise from the grave as an Android-running zombie, but our guess is that apocalyptic day is nigh.Fusion Garage's Grid 10 tablet clears the FCC, begs us not to call it the 'JooJoo 2' originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Jul 2011 10:18:00 EDT. Switcher Profile: Apple's 'halo effect' claims former editor of Windows Magazine

Cult of Mac writer Mike Elgan recently detailed the years-long process that convinced him to switch to the Mac. His story is fairly typical of many switchers: Once a die-hard PC evangelist, his first Apple product was the iPod, which he appreciated for its ease of use. The iPhone eventually convinced him to ditch his BlackBerry, and the iPad was the be-all, end-all of tablet-based computing as far as he was concerned. Finally, using his son's iMac convinced Elgan to switch away from Windows completely.

As I said, it's a fairly typical switcher story... up until you learn that Elgan used to be the editor of Windows Magazine during most of the 1990s. It's hard to be a much more die-hard Windows enthusiast than that without having Microsoft's logo on your business cards and paychecks.

The things that kept Elgan away from the Mac platform are fairly standard: familiarity with Windows and reluctance to learn OS X, not wanting to be dependent on Apple for hardware repairs, and not wanting to self-identify with the "fringe" elements among Mac users. But eventually, actually using Apple's products on a regular basis convinced the former Windows enthusiast to switch. Outgoing PCMag editor Lance Ulanoff is on the mobile side of this roster, as he's switching from a Blackberry to the iPhone.

The "halo effect" of iPod users becoming enamored of Apple's smaller gadgets and switching to the Mac shortly after has been well-documented over the past seven years or so, and with the introduction of the iPhone and iPad this effect has intensified. Apple's efforts to bring some of iOS's functions to the Mac via OS X Lion can be viewed in this light as a shrewd move to amplify this halo effect even farther. People who are already familiar with the iPad's touchscreen interface may take one look at a MacBook Air running full-screen apps or launching applications via Launchpad and think to themselves, "Hmmm, maybe switching to a Mac won't be so hard after all."

Just don't spoil it for those potential switchers by telling them about the Finder.Switcher Profile: Apple's 'halo effect' claims former editor of Windows Magazine originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 08:00:00 EST. Motorola Mobility Beats The Street, Shipped 440k Xoom Tablets, 4.4M Smartphones In Q2

Motorola Mobility just released its Q2 earnings and it's loaded with fun stats. First off, the company posted $3.3 billion in net revenue with non-GAAP earnings of nine cents a share. That's up 28% over last year's second quarter and beats the Wall Street's estimate of just six cents a share. The company also realized a GAAP net loss of $56 million compared to a net earnings of $80 million in 2010.

Over that time period Motorola Mobility managed to ship 11 million devices including 4.4 million smartphones and 440,000 Xoom Android tablets. That's up from 8.3 total devices last year . Part of this growth came from the Latin America and China markets where revenue grew 40% and sales more than doubled from the previous year. Note, the company reported shipments rather than sales to consumers.

HDR Darkroom Pro is a fast and inexpensive app for creating impressive landscape images

It's nice to see more awareness of HDR (high dynamic range) photography. The iPhone has a built-in HDR mode, and more and more software is supporting the combining of images shot at different shutter speeds, combined to create an image that captures more shadow detail without blowing out the highlights.

HDR Darkroom Pro for OS X is on sale at a rather dramatic introductory price of US $19.99. It's a 75% off savings. Most HDR apps hover around $100 so this app qualifies as a good bargain while it is on sale.

To use the app, you import 3 or more images show at different exposure settings. HDR Pro Darkroom will align the images, and produce a tone-mapped image that will almost always be more pleasing to the eye than a single image with standard exposure. Of course, like anything, HDR can be overdone, and I've seen some pretty horrible examples of photos that were over-saturated and surreal. On the other hand, that may be the effect you are after.

HDR Pro Darkroom allows multiple methods of tone mapping, and then gives you control over white/black points, noise reduction, color balance and more. The app is very fast, easily 2-3 times as fast as my reference app, Photomatix, although it should be noted that the preview displays are very fast, the app is slow to save because that is the stage at which it renders the image. Most apps render for the preview, then do a quick save.

It's not all roses however. After processing several images, I never saw output as clean as I was getting with Photomatix, or even the built in HDR feature on Photoshop CS5. I especially saw some very rough gradients (check the gallery) when the sky faded from blue to a a bright white on a sunrise shot. Photomatix rendered the transition perfectly.

On less challenging material, HDR Darkroom Pro did quite well, but the interface is not intuitive and when you go to the help menu you are taken to the developers site and you have to hunt around for a PDF manual.

If you can work around the limitations of HDR Darkroom Pro and want to get your feet wet in HDR photography I think this app is worth a purchase at the sale price. On the other hand, it has a lot of rough edges that simply don't exist in apps like Photomatix or HDR Efex Pro. Note: There are a bewildering number of photo apps at various prices from developer Everimaging. Be sure to go the the Mac App Store on your OS X computer to get the sale price of $19.99.

Sony VAIO Z review (2011)

We see countless laptops come and go through the seasons, but a rare few have built up something of a following. Make no mistake: the Sony VAIO Z, a skinny ultraportable brimming with cutting-edge technology and powerful innards, is that kind of gem. So when it disappeared from Sony's online store earlier this year, more than a few techies took note. After all, the Z is part of a small fraternity of notebooks that combine an impossibly lightweight design with performance worthy of a larger system. People who missed out on the last-gen Z wondered when they'd next get the chance to buy, while some lucky folks out there with thousands to burn started itching for something thinner, something lighter, something... better.

Well, it's here. The 2011 VAIO Z is, indeed, thinner, lighter, and more powerful. It also might not be the Z you were expecting. Whereas the last generation combined it all, cramming in an optical drive and switchable graphics, this year's model leaves much of that at the door -- or, at least, in an external dock that ships with the laptop. This time around, the Z has no optical drive, and packs just an integrated Intel graphics card on board. (Don't worry, it does squeeze in lots of other goodies, including standard-voltage Sandy Bridge processors and expanded solid-state storage.) If you want that Blu-ray burner or the stock AMD Radeon HD 6650M graphics card, you'll have to plug into the Power Media Dock, an external peripheral that uses Intel's Light Peak technology.

That's quite the gamble Sony is taking -- after all, the company is essentially betting that you won't need to do anything too intensive while you're on the go. On the one hand, this inventive design is sure to intrigue the Z's usual early adopter fanbase. But will it satisfy those who always liked the Z because of its no-compromise design? And then there's the issue of that $1,969 starting price, a likely stumbling block for people trying to decide between this and an equally thin, less expensive ultraportable. What's a well-heeled geek to do? Let's find out.

Joy of Tech takes on RIM yet again....

The jerks folks at Joy of Tech have once again taken on RIM with one of their cartoons, and boy oh boy they are just getting harsher with everyone they do. As always, they do mix in a good element of the truth with humor, which is what makes them clever, which is also why I like to post these up on the CrackBerry blogs. You have to be able to laugh at the tough times and admit your faults if you want to work through for a better future, which this cartoon addresses pretty well. Even if you disagree, it's at least good for a chuckle... makes me think RIM should brand their first QNX Superphone the BlackBerry Unicorn... or on second thought, maybe not!:)

RIM?s Management Changes Are For the Best

It seems that every time the blogosphere catches wind of a management change, either the post is written as "another nail in the coffin for RIM" or the post follows a series of "bye bye RIM" comments. There doesn't seem to be much talk around the fact that management changes are a) normal in a large company b) most likely motivated by career advancement and not company stock price and c) good for bringing new blood to the company. Here are some RIM management change stories that have been coming up:

Windows Phone Mango Twitter integration shown off, hashtagged (video)

Sadly, Twitter integration wasn't part of the package when we checked out Windows Phone Mango at the end of last month. The feature has finally been rolled out in the latest developer build of the forthcoming mobile operating system, and WinRumors has taken it for a spin on video. Thrill at the simple setup process through Windows Live. Gasp at integration with the People and Me hubs. Stare in stunned silence at the threaded conversations. Microsoft working to add Lion features to Office 2011

Like it or not, Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac is the most widely-used office suite for Mac users in the enterprise. While the existing version doesn't support OS X Lion features like Auto Save, Versions, and full-screen mode, MacNN is reporting that Microsoft's Mac Business Unit is hard at work adding those and possibly other features to Office.

Don't expect an update tomorrow, though. According to Microsoft Office team member Pat Fox, the wait for an updated Office 2011 will be "measured in months." If you're a user of Communicator for Mac, you can get an update right now that resolves some crashing issues in Lion. It's available through Microsoft's AutoUpdate, and can also be downloaded from the MS Download Center.

The company also noted that Office for Mac 2004 will never be Lion-compatible, since it was originally written for PowerPC-based Macs. If you're still trying to coax that old copy of Office for Mac 2004 along as you move forward to Lion, it's time to make the upgrade to Office 2011 ... or consider alternatives like Apple's iWork suite.

It will also be fascinating to see if Microsoft decides to bring Office 2011 to the Mac App Store, either in whole or as separate parts à la iWork. Only time will tell.Microsoft working to add Lion features to Office 2011 originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 12:00:00 EST. Soon after an official update was released that didn't have BBM integration. Well now the app has been updated again and does have BBM integration. So if you weren't one of the lucky ones to get the alpha up and running, you can now grab version 3.1 from BlackBerry app world and get in on the BBM fun. Actor blames entertainment industry for piracy

Actor Will Wheaton (of 'Stand By Me' and a ton of TV shows) has blamed the entertainment industry for video piracy, noting that honest consumers are getting frustrated with the lack of ease for legal alternatives compared to piracy.

The video comes via an interview with ScreenRant, and includes a guest appearance with Colin Ferguson of SyFy show 'Eureka.'

A couple of quotes from the interview:

As soon as the entertainment industry provides an alternative to bit-torrent -- or an alternative to piracy -- that makes it easy for honest people to get access to the program, then the piracy dries up.

Gabe Newell [CEO of Valve] says that pirates provide better customer service. How many times have you paid for a DRM license for something and the server goes down, or you travel across the border? I rented some episodes on Amazon of Doctor Who: when I went to Canada -- I paid for them in America; I live in America -- they say you cant watch it anymore because youre not in America anymore. That made me angry because I was being honest; I was an honest person. If I had stolen it, I would be watching it.

There are two classes of people in the world: there are people who will never pay for anything, no matter what -- youre never going to get them. Then theres people that will pay for something -- and want to. You just have to make it easy for them -- and reasonable.

Good interview, with valid points:

IEEE brings white space internet one step closer, we almost felt a twinge

Kudos to the IEEE for rushing this new 'super WiFi' standard through so very speedily for the sake of rural communities with poor web access. Designated "IEEE 802.22," it promises to bring speeds of up to 22Mbps to devices as far as 60 miles away from the nearest transmitter. How's that possible? Well, the standard carefully exploits swathes of unused white space within transmission bands that were originally reserved (and jealously guarded) for analogue TV. These frequencies currently contain nothing but hiss and occasional communications from dead people, but one day they could and should be filled with the hopes, aspirations and Facebook updates of country folk who are very much alive. Read the signs in the PR after the break.Continue reading IEEE brings white space internet one step closer, we almost felt a twingeIEEE brings white space internet one step closer, we almost felt a twinge originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 27 Jul 2011 09:10:00 EDT. Humble Indie Bundle 3 announced, includes Cogs, VVVVVV, And Yet It Moves

The Humble Indie Bundle is back at it again, offering five new indie gaming titles for one low choose-your-own price. This time around, they've got Crayon Physics Deluxe, 3D puzzler Cogs, the excellent retro platformer VVVVVV, Hammerfight, and the award-winning puzzler/platformer And Yet It Moves. They're all solid games designed by talented indie artists, together in this one bundle.

As before, the price is pay-what-you-will -- while there's a suggested value of $50, you can donate whatever you like, and you can split your donation any way you want, giving the money direction to the developers, or donating it to either the EFF or Child's Play nonprofits. You even get Steam codes from the purchase, so it'll be as if you picked up the games from Steam, even if you give the money to a charity.

You just plain won't find a better gaming deal on the Internet than this one -- the Humble Indie Bundle is always a very generous proposition, and the fact that all the games are Mac (and Windows and Linux) compatible is an added bonus for us Mac users.Humble Indie Bundle 3 announced, includes Cogs, VVVVVV, And Yet It Moves originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Tue, 26 Jul 2011 15:45:00 EST. Video App Demo: PDF Expert

In a world where there are plenty of PDF tools, PDF Expert distinguishes itself with a few key features. I've been a fan of Readdle's past products, and PDF Expert aims to give you a truly universal tool for dealing with PDFs, whether you are a student, educator, lawyer, doctor or anyone dealing with the "paperless office." Dave gave it a look back in March, but some new features have been added.

With PDF Expert you're able to sign documents with your finger or stylus, send documents to 9 different services (Readdle has their own) and my favorite: fill out PDF forms. On top of these features you get the usual stable of PDF management tools for sorting and annotating your files.

To see a walkthrough of these features, check out the video below. [Video was pointing to the wrong place for a bit there, apologies. -Ed.]

Macworld benchmarks i5 MacBook Airs

After one week on the market, the first good benchmarks of the new MacBook Air models are beginning to show up. Macworld ran benchmarks of the i5-based 11.6" and 13" MBAs and found them to be quite fast in everyday operations. The Macworld lab is in the process of fine-tuning their SpeedMark benchmark for Lion, so the tests were performed by timing tasks like duplicating, zipping, and unzipping folders, importing and exporting files from Pages and iMovie, and so on.

Not surprisingly, the tests showed that the new MacBook Airs were faster than the last generation models and the final generation of the MacBook. The MBAs beat even the current 13" i5 MacBook Pro in the file duplicate and zip tests. Strangely enough, though, the previous model 13" Core 2 Duo MacBook Air bested all comers for importing a movie archive to iMovie '09, had the best results with the Cinebench R11.5 graphics benchmark, and the highest framerate while playing Call of Duty 4.

If you do a lot of AAC to MP3 encoding in iTunes 10, then the 13" i5 MacBook Air is going to be your best friend. It was faster than even the latest 13" i5 MacBook Pro, although not by much. The bottom line is that these new MBAs are fast, due in part to the SSDs used for storage, but slower than their predecessors in some graphics operations.

Why? The previous MacBook Air models used Nvidia GeForce 320M integrated graphics, while the new models use the Intel HD Graphics 3000 capability embedded into the silicon of the i5 processor. The Nvidia graphics chip was faster, but the i5 with graphics is less expensive than the Core 2 Duo / Nvidia combo used before.

With the specs of the MacBook Air approaching those of the MacBook Pro line and rumors of a 15" Air-like Apple laptop on the horizon, it's interesting to conjecture that Apple may eventually get to one line of MacBooks -- the MacBook Airs.

Macworld plans on running more tests in the future using various configure-to-order options of the MacBook Air, and we'll be waiting to see what they find.Macworld benchmarks i5 MacBook Airs originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Wed, 27 Jul 2011 18:30:00 EST. Microsoft renews alliance with SUSE, throws $100 million in pocket change at Linux

Microsoft and Linux haven't always had the friendliest of rapports but, a few years back, the folks at Redmond decided to cozy up to Novell and the enterprise-focused distro SUSE. The German arm of the company even wished Tux a happy 20th birthday last week, in an attempt to further thaw their notoriously chilly relationship. Now the Windows crew have decided to renew their partnership with SUSE and have committed to purchasing $100 million in technical support for Microsoft Enterprise customers who also happen to be running Linux boxes as part of their operations. It's not about to stop claiming that the open source OS violates several of its patents, but at least they've learned to get along with out suing each other into oblivion... unlike some other companies we could name. Activists Want 'Obsolete' Cell Tower Rules Changed

Three activist organizations are petitioning congress in hopes that it will require the Federal Communications Commission to update cell tower safety regulations. Citizens for Health, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, and ElectromagneticHealth.org believe the current laws are out-dated and ignore all the current science and research regarding RF radiation. The groups said, "People who live near cell towers and antennas are in jeopardy. The science is increasingly clear that there are biological effects from both acute and chronic exposures to non-thermal microwave radiation. It is essential we have a government that puts the public's health above commercial interests." The groups are asking that U.S. citizens contact their representatives in order to push the idea through congress. The current rules have been in place since 1996. Dozens of studies from around the world contradict one another over the carcinogenic effects of cell phone RF radiation.

AT&T: 2011 Android devices will all receive Gingerbread

AT&T has noted this week that all Android phones released in 2011 will be updated to Gingerbread, a welcome development for consumers.

So far, those phones are the HTC Inspire 4G, LG Phoenix, Motorola ATRIX 4G, Pantech Crossover, Samsung Captivate and the Samsung Infuse 4G.

Google released Gingerbread (2.3) last December with the launch of the Nexus S, and the firmware has been updated to 2.3.4 since. However, the majority of current Android phones still do not have the update, especially if your phone was released earlier than this summer.

AT&T did add that some of the phones will get the updates OTA but others will require a manual download.

As of today, Gingerbread is on 17.7 percent of devices with Froyo (2.2) on a whopping 59 percent of current devices.Permalink | Comments

CrackBerry Kevin Goes to Communitech (and gets interviewed!!)

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

One of the highlights of my recent trip to Waterloo, the hometown of BlackBerry, was the afternoon I spent at the Communitech Hub (which technically is next door to Waterloo, in Kitchener). The Communitech Hub is in the beautifully restored Tannery building, a massive complex which in addition to housing Communitech startups, is also home to many other companies, including Google's local offices.

Between Communitech and the Accelerator Center, two organizations which work together addressing the same mission, they really are doing great things to to foster innovation, encourage colloboration and get new tech ideas commercialized in the region. Walking through the hub we saw tons of startups hard at work on their tech projects, and we even stumbled into some app developers who we are now working with to put together an AWESOME CrackBerry contest based on their app, GooseCha.se. Yep, we'll announce the details soon, but let's just say next week is CrackBerry GooseChase week. It's going to be awesome!

A little unexpected but fun, Communitech's PR man turned the blogging tables on me and wired me up for an interview, asking me some pretty direct questions on my thoughts about RIM and some of the challenges they're facing today (part 1 above is mainly about CrackBerry - the bigger questions get addressed in parts 2, 3 and 4 below). Be sure to check them out!

Huge thanks go to the Iain, Anthony and the crew from Communitech (and Andrew from the Accelerator Centre) for showing me around. My words won't do their endeavors justice, so be sure to check out their sites for more info at the iinks below.

San Francisco Resurrects Phone Radiation Bill

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors recently approved a modified version of a bill originally proposed in 2010 that would have required cell phone retail stores to post information regarding handsets' specific absorption rate (SAR). The city was sued by the CTIA Wireless Association over the 2010 bill, which it said would lead to consumer confusion. The CTIA also pointed out that all phones for sale in the U.S. have been declared safe by the Federal Communications Commission. San Francisco eventually shelved the legislation. The new version of the bill deletes the requirement that retailers display SAR data next to phones, and instead requires them to post information about the risks of cellular radiation and what steps cell phone users can take to reduce their exposure to it. The CTIA has yet to comment on this latest version of the legislation. The bill still needs to be signed by the major of San Francisco before it can become law.

Leaked Sprint release table bears a tablet: the unknown ZTE V55

There's a whole batch of previously unsuspected launch dates on this leaked Sprint document, but our looking glass is drawn to the very bottom of the list. Here you'll spot a red arrow, subtly added by us, pointing at the words "ZTE V55 TABLET." Could it be the very same 10-incher we spotted at CTIA? It certainly could, but there are two irksome discrepancies. Firstly, the CTIA slate was scheduled for the second half of this year, which is earlier than the 2012 date suggested on the leak. Secondly, the CTIA tablet was LTE compatible, whereas Sprint isn't -- at least not yet. Our attempts to make a connection must therefore be abandoned for the time being, leaving our intellectual appetites to dine on a weevil-infested question mark.Leaked Sprint release table bears a tablet: the unknown ZTE V55 originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 25 Jul 2011 11:20:00 EDT. In addition to our new cross-platform Mobile Nations podcast, Rene Ritchie (he LOVES podcasting) has taken the charge on three new podcasts for the network: Iterate (which focuses on app design/development), ZenandTech (which focuses on coping with technology in our lives) and the newest is a lifestyle podcast, called Super Functional, which deals with getting the most of our human bodies.

On episode 03 of Superfunctional Rene and Geoff talk all about what I dubbed for a long time to be the CrackBerry claw (seriously, I went through about 18 months of hell dealing with a screwed up hand caused from excessive BlackBerrying). So on this show they talk about what causes repetitive stress injuries and what can be done about them. It's worth a listen if you've ever suffered from injuries related to too much typing or too much BBMing. This is Superfunctional!

OS X Lion breaks over a dozen Adobe products

Adobe has confirmed today that Apple's latest operating system, OS X Lion, breaks over 12 of their products, another stage in the ongoing saga between the two companies that began with Apple banning Flash from running on iOS devices.

The software company notes that most of its products are currently missing functionality in Lion.

Apple banned Flash from iOS devices like the iPhone, citing performance, security and battery life concerns.

Says Adobe of the Lion fiasco:

The cat is out of the bag! Mac OS X 10.7 aka Lion is roaming the streets and you brave Mac IT admins have been deemed Lion Tamers by the public at large. Or at least by me. I've managed a few OS compatibility assessments in my past and it is no easy task to gather up all the necessary info from the software publishers that are used in your environment, run/coordinate testing, etc.

Popular software affected include Acrobat, Adobe Drive, Contribute, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash Builder, Flash Catalyst, Flash Player, Lightroom, LiveCycle, Photoshop and Premiere Pro.

According to multiple sources, Mozilla's upcoming Firefox 8 may be headed to Honeycomb tablets by the end of the year.

The popular browser has been in alpha version for mobile devices for some time now.

Mozilla is planning to bring a "rich, touch-friendly, magazine-like feel to web browsing," including the Awesome bar and other tweaked UI features from the desktop version.

For the most part, the Honeycomb version will be a tweaked version of the mobile app, optimized for larger resolutions and screen sizes.

Apple TV 101: Create a genius playlist on Apple TV

Of late, the Apple TV hasn't received all that much attention here at TUAW. We can only assume that's because it simply does what it says on the tin -- it just works! But the other day, I found myself trying to do something quite simple on my Apple TV, and it wasn't "just working!"

Using AirPlay to stream music from my Mac to my Apple TV (2nd generation) downstairs, I wanted to create a genius playlist on the Apple TV without going upstairs to my Mac or using the Remote app. Using the Apple remote, I started scrolling through all the various menu options to try and find any way to create a genius playlist from a particular artist's song, but I couldn't find anything anywhere. Out of sheer frustration -- guests were knocking at the door -- I squeezed the Apple remote and accidentally pushed down and held the center select button. All of a sudden, a menu appeared out of nowhere with a "start genius" option. Crisis averted!

So there you go. To create a genius playlist on an Apple TV (2nd generation), go to the artist's song you want to start the playlist with, hold down the center select button on the Apple Remote and click on "Start Genius."

HTC Rep: Thunderbolt Android 2.3 Update Pulled Back, No Estimated Time Frame for Relaunch

We tend to get a little skeptical when customer services reps start dropping time lines for updates, but since the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) chatter for the Thunderbolt seems to have died down a notch or two lately, we thought we’d share. From the email below that one of our readers received back from an HTC [...]

iPhone reads blood glucose level with nanosensor tattoo (Updated)

For diabetics, checking blood glucose levels is literally a pain. Current blood glucose meters require a prick of the finger to get a small blood sample that is then put onto a small paper strip, inserted into the meter, and analyzed. The strips are a recurring cost to diabetics, and the constant finger pricks can be a route for infection. Now a research team at Northeastern University has developed a method of reading blood glucose levels with an iPhone and a nanosensor tattoo.

The team's method works this way: they inject a patient with subdermal nanoparticles containing "fluorescent dye, specialized sensor molecules...and a charge-neutralizing molecule." The molecules attach to glucose, release ions, and alter the glow of the nanosensor tattoo based on the relative amount of glucose.

While the initial device for reading the tattoo's glow was a big ugly box, one of the team members apparently outfitted an iPhone case with LEDs and filters to do the job. According to our sister site Engadget, the team is also looking at a way to measure blood sodium (associated with dehydration) and oxygen levels with iPhones and apps. You never thought that your iPhone would be an early-generation medical tricorder, did you?

Update: Since a few commenters asked, this is an experimental device and has not (to our knowledge) been submitted to the FDA for their lengthy approval process.iPhone reads blood glucose level with nanosensor tattoo (Updated) originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Fri, 22 Jul 2011 15:30:00 EST. OS X Lion introduces new, multilingual, high-quality text-to-speech voices

First announced in March, then found in developer previews, one of the little-heralded new features of OS X Lion is its inclusion of several high-quality text-to-speech voices in 22 different languages. The last major addition to Apple's built-in OS X voices was Alex, a higher-quality voice included in Mac OS X Leopard back in 2007. While Alex was a breakthrough for text-to-speech Mac voices at the time, the over 50 new voices included in Lion outmatch him in several key ways.

These new voices, sourced from Nuance, are not only available in several dialects of English but also, in an OS X first, in several other languages. Text-to-speech voices are now available in Arabic, three different Chinese dialects, Czech, Danish, two varieties of Dutch, Finnish, two French dialects, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, two Portuguese dialects, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, two Spanish dialects, Swedish, Thai, and Turkish.

Like a few other features of OS X Lion, Apple hasn't made these new voices easily discoverable unless you know where to look for them. It's also a bit of a misnomer to say they're "included" with OS X, as they are not included in the standard Lion install and require a separate download.

In the Speech pane of System Preferences, clicking on the Text to Speech tab gives you an option for "System Voice" in a pulldown menu. This will likely be set to "Alex" by default. Clicking on "Customize" gives you access to the plethora of new optional voices, and you can play previews of each one before downloading them. (You can also listen to previews of these voices at NextUp.) Most of these new voices sound astonishingly natural, especially compared to the old, robotic, pre-Alex voices that were the bread and butter of text-to-speech in OS X's distant past. In particular, the Australian English "Lee" voice (now my default) and Mexican Spanish "Javier" sound incredibly lifelike to my ears.

Selecting a checkbox next to a voice and clicking "OK" will present an alert asking if you're sure you want to download the voice. You'll find this alert welcome, because these high-quality voice files are huge, generally in the neighborhood of 350 to 500 MB each. If your bandwidth or hard drive space are limited, I wouldn't recommend downloading more than a few of these voices.

I've generally shied away from utilizing OS X's text-to-speech functions in the past, because even "Alex" sounded jarringly artificial to me. The new voices aren't perfect and don't fill every dialectical niche (Richard Gaywood was dismayed there was no "Welsh English" voice, and I'm having to make do with Australian Lee rather than a full-fledged "Kiwi English" voice). That said, many of the new voices sound natural enough that having my Mac "talk" to me is now a useful feature, even though I don't have any accessibility requirements that make them necessary as they are for some users. In particular, Australian voice "Lee" makes my MacBook Pro sound like a bloke worth taking down to the pub for a pint, and that's a feature definitely worth having.OS X Lion introduces new, multilingual, high-quality text-to-speech voices originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Sun, 24 Jul 2011 12:00:00 EST. Dear Aunt TUAW: Where's my Lozenge?

Dear Aunt TUAW,

I miss the lozenge. You know what I mean? The chicklet thing that used to be at the top right of my Finder windows. Click it and it would show the sidebar. Click again, sidebar gone. How can I show and hide the sidebar in Lion?

Your loving nephew,

Michael N.

Dear Michael,

You refer to, of course, the savior of everyone who used to struggle with DMGs on Leopard and Snow Leopard. Auntie remembers the lozenge fondly.

Unfortunately, the lozenge is a thing of the past with OS X 10.7 Lion. But that doesn't mean you can't still hide and show your sidebars. Just right-click on the title bar of any Finder Window and select Show Toolbar or Hide Toolbar from the popup. Unfortunately this affects both the toolbar and the sidebar, but Auntie takes what she can get.

Hopes this helps next time you run across one of those unfriendly windows.

Hugs,

Auntie T.Dear Aunt TUAW: Where's my Lozenge? originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Sun, 24 Jul 2011 09:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.Source | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Curiosity rover to land in Mars's Gale Crater to look for life, finally answer Bowie's nagging questions

It's gotten its own photo shoot, some cool animation, and the interest of James Cameron -- and now Curiosity finally has a destination. NASA's pluckily-named Mars rover is set to land next to a mountain inside the red planet's 96-mile-wide Gale Crater. Curiosity is scheduled to touch down in August 2012 in search of life on the fourth rock from the sun. The crater, one of 60 suggested sites, was chosen due to its potential for a safe landing and the possibility of scientific discovery, thanks in part to nearby geographical formations that may have been created by water. Here's hoping it encounters some serious space oddities when it gets there.Continue reading Curiosity rover to land in Mars's Gale Crater to look for life, finally answer Bowie's nagging questionsCuriosity rover to land in Mars's Gale Crater to look for life, finally answer Bowie's nagging questions originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 23 Jul 2011 23:59:00 EDT.
