iPad accounted for $9.566B out of $9.6B in tablet sales in 2010
I have an original iPad and I really like it, I can certainly see why the tablet did so well on the market. Take into account that for much of 2010 it was the only media tablet on the market and you can see why the numbers for tablet sales in 2010 were so lopsided. According to numbers released by Gartner, the iPad accounted for almost every bit of the tablet sales last year.
Gartner reports that $9.6 billion was spent last year on media tablets by consumers. Out of that number, the firm has Apple selling $9.556 billion worth of iPads. A little math will leave all other tablets that were on the market last year selling a combined $34 million in revenue.
IDC’s numbers showed that the iPad had 83% of the market last year. This year is likely to be even better for sales of iPads with the iPad 2 on the market. There will be more competition this year and a few of the tablets may have what it takes to make this a two horse race. IDC still figures that the iPad will grab 70% of the tablet market in 2011 putting a cool $20 billion into the coffers in Cupertino.

BlackBerry OS 6.1.0.44 leaks out, brings some updated apps with it
For anyone tired of hearing about the BlackBerry PlayBook, the new images of the BlackBerry Touch were a nice change. But now, OS OS 6.1.0.44 has shown up and along for the ride is a bunch of updated apps. Extracted and taken from the full, leaked OS updated versions of the following are now available for download:
BlackBerry App World v2.1.3.2
BlackBerry Radio v1.0.0.34
BlackBerry Podcasts v1.5.0.18
BlackBerry News v1.1.0.12
Facebook for BlackBerry v1.9.1.8
Visual Voice Mail v3.0.0.122
All of the leaked apps have been tested on a BlackBerry Torch, should any of them give you a hassle about missing files it is suggested you download this file. One thing to note however, is that these are leaked files. If you load them up, you do so at your own risk -- be sure to back things up first.
PS: For those of you asking, no -- it will NOT work on your Torch. The OS leak itself has very little meaning to folks who don't acutally have the devices they are meant for. They do however, make way for more leaks and for hybrid OS builders to make use of the files. Other then that, they really aren't meant for mass consumption. Only the apps can be used by various other devices running BlackBerry 6.

Evigroup debuts Windows-based SmartPaddle tablet
It hasn't been all that long since France's Evigroup upgraded its "Paddle" tablet the Paddle Pro, but it's now already back with another model: the SmartPaddle. This one packs the same Atom N450 processor as before, along with an 11.6-inch capacitive screen, 2GB of RAM, a 64GB SSD, WiFI and 3G connectivity, and Windows 7 for an OS -- plus a Microsoft Arc keyboard, apparently. You'll also get the same head-tracking capabilities seen on the Paddle Pro, as well as a new 3D interface for Windows dubbed "Scale," which promises to make things a bit more tablet-friendly. Head on past the break for a video, and look for the tablet itself to set you back a hefty €1,290 (or about $1,820).

Acer CEO and President Gianfranco Lanci resigns amid disagreement about company's future direction
Acer's board and CEO don't seem to have been getting along too brilliantly lately and now the situation's come to a point with the resignation of one Mr. Gianfranco Lanci from the company's helm. In a press release just distributed, Acer points out that Lanci held different views from the majority of board members about the "importance on scale, growth, customer value creation, brand position enhancement, and on resource allocation and methods of implementation." Following a few months of discussions that failed to deliver a consensus, both parties have decided it's best to part ways. For now, things continue as normal with Acer's goal still being globalization of its product portfolio, whose centerpiece will remain the personal computer, according to Chairman JT Wang. He'll be the man to take over for Lanci while Acer seeks out a replacement for the outspoken Italian.Continue reading Acer CEO and President Gianfranco Lanci resigns amid disagreement about company's future directionAcer CEO and President Gianfranco Lanci resigns amid disagreement about company's future direction originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 31 Mar 2011 04:22:00 EDT. Samsung 22-inch transparent LCD displays hit production
Samsung has announced that it has begun mass-production of 22-inch transparent LCD displays, with two models – capable of either black & white or color images – in the first range to be offered. Rather than a traditional backlight, the 1680 x 1050 displays (which have 500:1 contrast ratios) use ambient light to illuminate them; Samsung has boosted transparency to 15-20% (over 5% in normal panels) so that sunlight is enough to make the picture visible.
Inputs include HDMI and USB, and Samsung reckons that power consumption is down by 90-percent over traditional displays as well. Users can look straight through them, like glass, and while it envisages advertising and “interactive communication” uses initially, there are also some very appealing transparent notebook prototypes floating around.
No word on pricing at this stage, nor when the displays – which only went into production this month – will actually go on sale.

Press Release:
Samsung Electronics Becomes the World?s First in Mass Production of Transparent LCD Panel
SEOUL, South Korea–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced today that it began mass production of a 22-inch transparent LCD panel in March this year.
?Transparent displays will have a wide range of use in all industry areas as an efficient tool for delivering information and communication. With the world?s first mass production of the transparent LCD panel, Samsung Electronics plans to lead the global transparent LCD market by developing various applications.?
The panels come in two types, the black-and-white type and the color type, and they have a contrast ratio of 500:1 with WSXGA+ (1680*1050) resolution.
Compared with the conventional LCD panels that use back light unit (BLU) and have 5% transparency, Samsung?s transparent LCD panel boasts the world?s best transparency rate of over 20% for the black-and-white type and over 15% for the color type.
The transparent LCD panel has a high transparency rate, which enables a person to look right through the panel like glass, and it consumes 90% less electricity compared with a conventional LCD panel using back light unit. It?s because a transparent LCD panel utilizes ambient light such as sun light, which consequently reduces the dependency on electricity for generating power.
Also, Samsung?s transparent LCD panel maximizes convenience for not only manufacturers but also consumers by incorporating the High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) and the Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface.
Transparent display panels have endless possibilities as an advertising tool, which can be applied to show windows and outdoor billboards or used in showcase events. Corporations and schools can also adopt the panel as an interactive communication device, which enables information to be displayed more effectively.
Younghwan Park, a senior vice president of Samsung Electronics LCD Business, said, ?Transparent displays will have a wide range of use in all industry areas as an efficient tool for delivering information and communication. With the world?s first mass production of the transparent LCD panel, Samsung Electronics plans to lead the global transparent LCD market by developing various applications.?

Apple Design Awards: Would past winners be eligible?
As we reported Monday, Mac software is once again eligible for an Apple Design Award with the caveat that it be available on the Mac App Store by May 23. Not only does it exclude companies that can't enter the Mac App Store, but it also cuts out a good bit of past winners.
Out of the past 22 winners of the Apple Design Award spanning 2006 to 2009, nine apps would be eligible for the 2011 awards. Thirteen are out of the game, though two developers have indicated future Mac App Store plans. A couple pieces of past winners are no longer actively developed.
Read on to see a list of past winners -- 2010 excluded, of course -- and their current status regarding the Mac App Store.

Microsoft Targeting NFC for Next Version of Windows Phone
According to sources cited by BusinessWeek, the next version/update of Windows Phone from Microsoft will support mobile payments using near-field communications (NFC). BusinessWeek's sources didn't say when this update might be available, and implied that Microsoft would look to Nokia to help it add this component to its smartphone platform. Nokia supports NFC-based mobile payments, and recently released a handset with NFC built in in the U.S. (Astound / C7). Google is already backing NFC-based mobile payment systems in Android, as are a number of carriers and hardware makers through a joint venture called Isis. (follow link to read)

Watch-controlled robo-tot grasps small objects, the meaning of life (video)
It may seem like there's an abundance of robot news lately, but we're just trying to please our mechanical overlords deliver the latest in gadget and technology news. What we've got here is an Arduino-based robo-gripper that serves only to move around and use its 3D printed claws to grab tiny objects that we'd otherwise be too lazy to pick up ourselves. The robot, infused with a Texas Instruments CC1110 dev kit, is controlled using an accelerometer-based Chronos watch and can move in all directions by simply tilting the timepiece. If you want to take a gander at this little guy in action, check out the video past the break -- it's always warming to see humans having the upper hand against the machine.Continue reading Watch-controlled robo-tot grasps small objects, the meaning of life (video)Watch-controlled robo-tot grasps small objects, the meaning of life (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 18:53:00 EDT. Fancy De Bethune pocket watchcase mixes old school and high-tech
I long ago stopped wearing a watch on my wrist when the iPhone became my go to timepiece. If you like your iPhone and want an old school pocket watch to boot, we have the case for you. This fancy case has what appears to be crocodile skin leather and a fancy watch on the back.
That pocket watch movement on the back of the case is certainly the big feature here. The watch is a De Bethune DB 1024 movement nestled on the on the back of the case. It’ looks pretty cool actually, but with the way my iPhone cases tend to get scratched I don?t even want to think what this case would look like in a few months.
I also don?t even want to think about what would happen to that fancy watch or my iPhone if I dropped the thing. There is no word on pricing, but considering the fancy nature and style I am betting it’s not cheap at all.

Tesla Roadster drives 10 million miles, saves 500K gallons of gas
We have talked about the green and awesome Tesla Roadster a lot in the past. This is easily the coolest of the EVs for me since looks like a sports car, had loads of performance, and promises a long driving range with no stops at the pump. Tesla has announced that its Roadster fleet has hit a major milestone.
Tesla has announced that Roadsters have now driven 10 million miles to date. The cars are in 30 different counties, have altogether saved 500,000 gallons of fuel, and prevented 5.3 million pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere.
Tesla’s little Roadster can hit 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and promises a driving range of 245 miles on a charge. This is an awesome little car and Tesla has a larger car coming as well called the Model S. The model S is a sedan with more seating for passengers.

On Friday, we've shown you Twimal, a super-cute USB toy for Twitter users that can read specific tweets out loud (so you don't have to look at the computer screen to follow your time line). Skype hits new milestone
Skype has announced today that 30 million users were online today concurrently, a new record for the service.
Says the company:
A few hours ago, Skype passed a new milestone. There were 30 million people, online on Skype, at the same time.
As we cut the (blue) cake at Skype HQ, its a good opportunity to remind you that if theres someone in your life who doesnt use Skype, theres never been a better time to tell them about all the wonderful things you can do video calling on computers, mobiles and TVs, great value calls to phones, instant messaging, sending files and more.
The milestone is good news for the service, which saw its second-longest outage, ever, in December with most of its users being unable to access the service for just over 24 hours.
Skype ended up crediting every paying user $1 for the down time.Permalink | Comments

Sprint begins Kyocera Echo reservations, challenges you to a 'dual'
Surely you remember the Kyocera Echo, that dual-screen Android 2.2 phone that Sprint unveiled way back in February. Well, if it managed to pique your interest, then you'll be glad to know that Sprint's thrown up quite the unique reservation page that will let you reserve the phone now for $200 (after a $100 mail-in rebate) to ensure you'll have it on its April 17th release date. The company warns that there'll be limited quantities, so if you want to be the only one in town rocking a dual-screen smartphone, hit the source link and punch in your info -- and don't forget to try your hand at a game of Bottle Bustin' Bandits while you're there for a chance to win one of these phones.Sprint begins Kyocera Echo reservations, challenges you to a 'dual' originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 02:10:00 EDT. Sony Ericsson Xperia Play review
The PlayStation Phone. We've had quite the intimate history with this gamepad-equipped slider, learning of its secretive existence way back in August and then handling a prototype unit in January, so you'll forgive us for feeling sentimental and still entertaining our pet name for it. The Sony Ericsson marketing gurus renamed it the Xperia Play when it finally went official at MWC this year, but the PlayStation connection remains as strong as ever. Aside from the D-pad, iconic game keys, and two touchpads, this device comes with a little app named PlayStation Pocket, which will be serving up dollops of classic PlayStation One gaming to all those with a taste for it. Yes, the Sony influence is strong with this one, and the Android Market will be joining the fun with Xperia Play-optimized titles from third-party developers. So all we really need to know now is whether the Android smartphone underpinning this smash-bang fusion of old and new school entertainment happens to be any good. Shall we get Started?

Nokia Pure revamps typography for a more modern Symbian [Video]
Nokia has unveiled its new typeface and branding strategy, dumping the old Nokia Sans font and adopting the new Nokia Pure both in their publicity material and on handsets. Designed to be “unfussy and modern, without being cold and machine-like,” Nokia Pure also has the benefit of being usable at smaller point-sizes while still being legible.
Video overview after the cut
It’s the handiwork ofBruno Maag, a Swiss typographic designer, who designed the letters so that they almost seem “to flow into each other.” No word on when we might see it show up on the first handsets, but Pure will make an appearance on promotional material later in 2011. It remains to be seen whether Nokia will also use the font on its Windows Phone handsets.
Now, we’ve not been short on Nokia reviews here on SlashGear – we’ve covered the E7, C7 and N8 in recent months – and one of the common criticisms we hear from potential smartphone buyers is that the core Symbian UI is a turn-off. While you can change and reskin that UI, Nokia tweaking it out-of-the-box seems a mighty sensible idea; in one fell stroke the whole interface feels a lot more modern and friendly.

Incipio Feather and KickStand Cases for the BlackBerry PlayBook
[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]
Walking the CTIA 2011 tradeshow floor, I was happy to come across some BlackBerry PlayBook cases at the Incipio booth. While pricing hasn't been announced just yet, you can watch the video above to get a good look at Incipio's new Feather Case for the BlackBerry PlayBook as well as their Kickstand Case for the BlackBerry PlayBook.
In true feather style, the Feather case is a basic hard shell that is light in weight and minimalistic in design. while the Kickstand provides that portfolio type of look and feel that helps hide your tablet when not in use. I'm liking the look of the distressed leather Kickstand case a lot! No MSRP has been announced just yet, but we should have these hitting the good 'ole ShopCrackBerry.com store soon so keep your eyes peeled.

FCC to Allow HTC to Turn On Inspire 4G's HSUPA Radio
A new set of approval documents spotted on the Federal Communications Commission web site note that HTC now has permission to turn on the HSUPA radio inside the Inspire 4G. The Inspire 4G shipped with an HSUPA radio inside, but it is inactive pending finalization of HSUPA performance software from AT&T. Now that HTC has been given permission to activate the HSUPA radio, it is possible AT&T has finalized what it needs in order to enable faster uploads from the Inspire 4G. Neither HTC nor AT&T have said when the device might actually be updated. The Motorola Atrix 4G also has restricted upload speeds due to an inactive HSUPA radio.(follow link to read)
HTC Thunderbolt getting Gingerbread in Q2
DroidLife has reported this weekend that the HTC Thunderbolt will be getting the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update in the Q2.
The Q2 begins April 1st and ends at the conclusion of June.
Thanks to an email sent to a customer, DroidLife says the confirmation is in this message:
Dear John,
Congratulations on obtainng the HTC Thunderbolt. We understand how important it is that your device meets your needs.
John, Bluetooth manufacturers make their devices to be compatible with our phones. We do not make our phones to be compatible with the thousands of Bluetooth devices in the market. Bluetooth manufacturers conduct the testing to see if complete compatability is achievable. It is the software in the Bluetooth devices which dictates whether they work or not. Our software in the phones, ensures that the phone can pair and turn on the Bluetooth. Anything else, goes to the Bluetooth manufacturer for troubleshooting. You would need to speak with the car manufacturer to ensure that full compatibilty is achievable. The Thunderbolt does have a text to speech feature.
We are excited to announce that the Thunderbolt will receive the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update in Q2 2011. Stay tuned for details as we get closer to the update availability.

Comcast Xfinity TV iOS App Gets Updated With More Shows, Features
Comcast today launched an update for their Xfinity TV iOS app. The app lets your iOS device function like a TV remote—finding your favorite shows and movies, controlling your channels, and scheduling DVR recordings. Certain TV shows can even be streamed to your iPad via a WiFi connection.
The update brings more shows and channels including the Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim and BBC. But more importantly, are the additional customization features. You can now mark channels as favorites and access channel history to flip back to previously viewed channels. A custom channel listing can be created to display just the shows on your most watched networks.
It’s not clear when Comcast will offer streaming of live TV such as that boasted by Time Warner Cable’s iOS app. However, the current Xfinity app does allow you to play certain movies and TV shows on your iPad via a WiFi connection. The app is free to download from the iTunes App Store.

FCC Says Data Roaming Rules On the Table
Responding to the inquiries of U.S. senators, the Federal Communications Commission has decided that it needs to enact rules governing how carriers negotiate data roaming. In a statement, FCC chair Julius Genachowski said, "After an extensive review of the record, the FCC staffhas concluded -- and I agree -- that a data roaming rule is necessary to ensure vibrant competition in the mobile marketplace, to unleash billions of dollars of investment that is currently sidelined, to create thousands of new jobs and to meet the consumer demand for seamless nationwide coverage, be it for voice or data. The record contains abundant evidence from both national and rural businesses that a data roaming rule is necessary to achieve these important goals because some providers have been unwilling to negotiate either 30 or 40 data roaming agreements or have created long delays or taken other steps to impede healthy competition and roaming for consumers. Moreover, as the mobile world moves to LTE, the Commission's basic bipartisan voice roaming rules will be in jeopardy, as they will no longer ensure automatic voice roaming. Based on these factors, today I am circulating to my colleagues a draft order for
consideration that requires a facilities-based provider of commercial mobile data services to offer roaming arrangements to other such providers on commercially reasonable terms and conditions, subject to various limitations designed to account for and protect the legitimate interests of the companies that would be providing roaming." In theory, if the FCC does pass legislation requiring that roaming agreements for mobile data be set, it should benefit the American public. (follow link to read)

Rumor: iOS 5 will be a 'major revamp,' won't debut until fall
TechCrunch reports that two "solid sources" have said Apple will hold off on unveiling the next iteration of iOS, version 5, until this fall instead of debuting in the summer as in years past. If TechCrunch's sources are correct, the iPhone 5 is still likely to debut in the summer, but it will be running a flavor of the current v4 iOS.
In addition of launching in the fall, TechCrunch's sources state that iOS 5 will be a "major revamp of the OS" that will include:
an heavily cloud-based iOS, with several new services
a "music locker" service to coincide with the introduction of new iPods
a location service that focuses on finding friends and family members
TechCrunch also states Apple will first discuss many of iOS 5's cloud-based services at WWDC in June, and Mac OS X Lion will likely include integration with those cloud-based components.
Until Apple makes an announcement about iOS 5 nothing is certain, but if TechCrunch's sources are right about a "music locker" service, it would make sense to hold iOS 5 until the fall when new iPods are traditionally launched. The extended timeline would also give Apple the time to devote sufficient resources to completing work on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, which Apple has said will be released this summer.Rumor: iOS 5 will be a 'major revamp,' won't debut until fall originally appeared on TUAW on Sat, 26 Mar 2011 23:00:00 EST. RIM acquires tiny Hippos mobile web development team
While no huge press release announcement came with this news it's certainly newsworthy in our opinion. RIM has acquired yet another company dedicated to development and more specifically, mobile web development. Granted, the name may not sound familiar to a lot of people but tiny Hippos is the company behind the Ripple Mobile Environment Emulator, a tool designed to test and debug cross-platform mobile applications.
The intent here of course, is to bring BlackBerry support to the Ripple and as such offer developers another set of tools to be able to debug and test their applications when preparing them for release on the BlackBerry Platform. Although I'm sure over time tiny Hippos role will certainly be expanded within Research in Motion, much like we've seen from their previous acquisitions.

QuickCal for Mac: natural language events and todos for iCal
QuickCal has been one of my favorite ways to add items to iCal. It started with a Dashboard widget that let me use natural language to add calendar events. I loved it (actually wrote about it back in '09). Then it became an iOS app, QuickCal Mobile, and I was able to add entries with blazing speed while on-the-go, as well as view all of my upcoming appointments within the app. It currently has a place on my iPhone dock for instant access. Now, QuickCal is a desktop application, available in the Mac App Store, and it has some cool new capabilities.
The natural language engine is pretty smart to begin with. You can type things like "Dr. appt 4p" and an event is created for today at 4:00pm titled "Dr. appt." You can also get more verbose, adding locations and start and end times. It does todo items, too. "todo - Get something done by wed" will add a task to iCal with a due date. That's not working for me in the current version, but I've seen video of it working splendidly in the upcoming 2.3 release.
You set a default calendar to add to, but you can change the target calendar by typing part of the calendar's name in the entry box. It can run menubar only, dock only or both. You can also set it up to launch directly to entry mode and quit after you finish one event or todo. That's perfect if you just want to run it from Quicksilver or LaunchBar and not have it running permanently.
The menubar offers a dropdown showing all of your upcoming appointments and todo items. You can click an entry to open it in iCal, but you don't really need to. You can see everything you need to -- and in the upcoming version you can also check off tasks and see priorities and days until due -- from that little icon up there. Once the new version is approved by Apple, it will actually turn iCal into a much handier todo list than it normally would be.
Smart reminders automatically set alarms based on the distance away an event is, and the duration of the event. If you set a day long event for a month away, you'll get reminders at configurable intervals up to the date. If your new event starts in an hour, you can automatically set just a 15 minute alarm. You can turn this off, but it makes setting reminders a breeze.
Sound good? Grab it fast, it's only US$.99 while the upcoming version is in review with Apple. It could be days, it could be hours ... who knows? But it's cheap right now, and handy for anyone who uses iCal.QuickCal for Mac: natural language events and todos for iCal originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 11:30:00 EST. Woah, This Robobird Really Flies Like A Bird ? Like, With Wings
The SmartBird, designed by Festo, is an ultra-light flying machine modeled on "herring gulls," whatever those are (we have "seagulls" here), and it actually flies by flapping its wings as a bird would — not just up and down, either, but twisting at the precise angles that make precise flight possible.
Volvo C30 Electric test drive (video)
We've been covering the Volvo C30 Electric pretty closely because, well, let's face it: it's one of the few genuinely good looking electric cars in the pipeline. Sure, the Focus Electric looks fine, despite the excessive dental gear, and Tesla's products are certainly saucy, but for every Roadster in the world there are a couple-dozen Leafs and Prii putting their owners to sleep.
The C30 Electric, however, looks almost exactly like the C30 non-electric, which is a good thing, and it drives more or less like one too. About four months after we first saw the thing Volvo finally tossed us the keys, in the process taking us on a tour of Indianapolis-based Ener1, source of the battery packs that make the thing move. Yes, it's a funky little Swedish car with a big 'ol American battery pack. Read on for our impressions.

Bing Upgrades With Real-Time Twitter Feed
Microsoft announced today that its Bing search engine will begin implementing tweets into its news search results as well as integrating more with Facebook. The Bing Team feels that the addition of the social media giants will help users ?make more informed decisions in search by surfacing the kind of information you can only get from your friends, often in real-time.?
Bing will show all the relevant tweets related to headlines in Bing News and augment the search results you get depending on what your friends ?like.” Google did something similar to this last month by altering its search results based on whether certain information was shared by your friends. On Facebook you can now directly post search results from Bing on things like movies, artists, musicians, and TV shows.
Microsoft and Facebook have a pretty close relationship since 2007 when Microsoft outbid Google to invest $240 million in the social network. Bing is now the default search engine on Facebook and other deals have been struck between the two tech leaders. There will likely be more integration between Facebook and Microsoft in the near future.

RIM Commits to Supporting Android Apps on the PlayBook
Research In Motion today announced as part of its quarterly earnings report that it will add support for Android and Java applications in its forthcoming QNX-based PlayBook. It will work through two "app players" that provide an application run-time environment for Java apps and Android v2.3 apps. RIM has the APIs and other tools developers need to port their Android/Java apps to run on the PlayBook. Developers will only need to use the tools to recompile their apps, submit them to BlackBerry App World, and, once approved, their apps will be available for download through BlackBerry App World. This move will give PlayBook users access to a much wider range of applications than just those that will be initially available for the PlayBook's QNX platform. (follow link to read)
Elektra One Electric Airplane
We regularly report on new advances in electric cars, and you’ve maybe seen some of these electric bikes. The Elektra One is an all-electric single seater airplane weighing in at 440 pounds with a full contingent of batteries. The plane recently performed two test flights in Augsburg, Germany. This is the first successful flight of this design and marks it’s imminent entry into the European market. Calin Gologan is the CEO of the company marketing the electric aircraft, PC-Aero.
With these first test flights completed, PC-Aero plans to get more than three hours of flight time out of this design. The propeller only spins at 1,400 RPM, keeping this a very quiet, and hopefully efficient, flight. “The three hour endurance goal translates to more than a 400 km (~250 miles) range according to PC-Aero.”
The 100,000 Euro price tag would net you not only the plane, but the hangar and charging system as well. PC-Aero plans to package the planes with hangars built to provide the Elektra One with solar charging. Gologan believes that 215 square feet of panels will give the Elektra one 300 hours of flight time per year without drawing any juice from the grid.

Acer announces UK Iconia Tab pricing: Windows or Android starting at 449
There's still no official word on pricing for the eventual US release, but Acer has now finally confirmed the UK pricing for its new Iconia Tab series of tablets. The WiFi-only versions of both the Windows 7-based Iconia Tab W500 and Android-based A500 will demand £449 apiece (or about $720) when they launch in the UK on April 8th, while the 3G-equipped W500 will set you back £529, or roughly $850 -- there's curiously no pricing for the 3G version of the A500 at the moment. Also available at the same time is a keyboard dock that will set you back £90 on its own or £529 in a bundle, and you can look for the smaller 7-inch A100 and W100 models to follow in May, or possibly later -- apparently with €349 price tag, if recent retailer pricing is any indication.Acer announces UK Iconia Tab pricing: Windows or Android starting at 449 originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 13:22:00 EDT. CTIA 2011 is now over and I'm literally flying home as I post this (gotta love GoGo Inflight!). Things were pretty quiet on the BlackBerry front as RIM chose to not have a big presence at this show (I guess BlackBerry World is just 6 weeks away afterall and everybody is hustling to get the PlayBook out the door between now and then). At least they did finally announce pricing and availability of the PlayBook and I did get some more hands-on time with the PlayBook and pulled together a few new videos and a few new insights (see my forum post).
With my downtime I took a closer look at Android devices than I normally do, and basically all of the new devices announced at CTIA were for Android, so that's what the majority of our talk is about in this Smartphone Experts podcast. But we also talk PlayBook (little later in the show) and about some of the other CTIA events that took place, like the actually good day one keynote that put the big wigs from Verizon, Sprint and AT&T all up on stage. If you've got an hour to kill this podcast is worth the listen!
** Note, I'm going to leave this one out of our regular CrackBerry podcast feed as the actual amount of BlackBerry talk is fairly minimal, so be sure to listen or download the file above **

Rustock Knocked Out, Investigators Look For Its Puppet Masters
The botnet is dead (enough), but now what? You'l recall that Microsoft, working in conjunction with pretty much every organization on the planet, had managed to lop the head off the Rustock botnet. The world's attention now turns to finding the people behind the botnet. Leads show that the botnet may have been run by as few as two or three people, so actually tracking these people down may prove a tricky proposition.
Celeste lets you shoot files to and from your iOS device using Bluetooth
A new app for iOS devices has landed called Celeste. The app is really cool and will allow you to send any files you want between your iPhone and iPad using Bluetooth. The really cool part is that the app will allow you to get files from just about anything that uses Bluetooth.
The app can be used to shoot files to your iPhone from your computer, an Android device, a Blackberry, and lots more. It appears that the app adds another option to the popup menu on your iOS device that you would normally see for copy. The screen show an option for send in that dialog box.
You also get options in the share contact area for sending with Bluetooth in addition to SMS and email. The app will allow the sharing of music files, video, and just about any other files on your device. The catch is that your iPhone or other device needs to be jailbroken. Check out the video to see the app in action.

Ornithopter Replicates Insect Flight
A team at Cornell University’s Computational Synthesis Laboratory has developed tiny hovering Ornithopters. These machines were the first type of design for mechanical flight that people began to experiment with. The team at Cornell has been working on the project design for the past few years, but last year they were able to construct a working model using 3D printing techniques. They mimicked the principles of insect flight to design their hovering machine. These little guys flit around like mechanical lacewings.
The 3D printing techniques allowed the students to quickly redesign the wings of their tiny craft. This tiny ‘thopter weighs in at less than four grams and has demonstrated 85 seconds of stable untethered flight. The trick to the untethered flight comes in the form of two dampening sails attached to the top and bottom of the wings. The sails even give the ‘thopter the ability to right itself by flipping from upside down into a position where lift is produced.
This video posted by the team from Cornell is a compilation of flight demonstrations. It starts by showing the design’s tethered flight capabilities, both at a stable altitude and with a climb and descent. Then it has a few videos of various untethered flight tests, including a slow motion demonstration of the self-righting flip and the 85 second endurance test.
The team was composed of Charlie Richter, Floris van Breugel, William Regan, and Zhi Ern Teoh.

Apple reportedly working on music locker launch
Stop me if you've heard this one before: Apple is working on cloud-based music storage.
The Music Void suggests that Apple has sealed a deal with the Warner Music Group in regards to an online music "locker" that will be a part of a forthcoming update to MobileMe. Apple is supposedly using that deal to persuade other labels to jump on board.
There's a healthy serving of guesswork with a side of conjecture in that article, so do with it what you will. After all, Apple's got to use Lala and all that storage for something.

iPad 2 back in stock at some stores; shipping estimates improve to 2-3 weeks
Just ahead of Apple’s international launch of the iPad 2, replenishment of U.S. inventory appears to be incoming. BGR has confirmed with various Apple Store and third-party retailer locations that new shipments have begun to arrive over the past few days. Retailers we have spoken with in the New Yorkmetropolitanarea appear to be receiving new units in very small quantities, and Wi-Fi iPad 2 tablets seem much easier to come by than 3G-enabled units. Apple’s online store also adjusted its shipping estimates for new orders down to 3-4 weeks from 4-5 weeks. While the short supply has lead many to believe Apple’s new iPad 2 is selling quite well, the company still hasn’t announced any sales figures. Read
Toshiba's new 14-inch USB-powered LCD monitor
Toshiba has unveiled a new 14-inch USB-powered mobile LCD Monitor designed for use on-the-go with notebook computers.
The Toshiba 14-inch USB-powered Mobile LCD Monitor is intended to provide a multi-screen solution where it otherwise wouldn't be easily possible. The ultra-portable monitor is designed to fit in most laptop bags, getting its power via a USB cable. Video is also fed via USB, eliminating the need for a video lead or an AC adapter (though an AC adapter is optionally available.)
Providing a maximum resolution of 1366x768, the monitor weighs just 2.8 lbs and can be neatly folded up. It is DisplayLink-certified and compatible with Microsoft Windows 7, Vista and XP. It is limited to 256,000 colors, but considering how it is powered and its intended use, it is adequate. It's specs list a contrast ratio of 400:1 and response rate of 16ms.
The screen is easily controlled with simple buttons to set brightness and other settings. It comes with a USB Y cable, cover, CD-ROM and documentation (an optional AC adapter is sold separately).

iGrip Car Cradle for the BlackBerry PlayBook
[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]
The folks from iGrip had a booth at CTIA 2011 and were on hand showing off their wide range of holding solutions for smartphones and tablets. And much to my delight, we were able to get a close look at their upcoming iGrip Car Cradle for the BlackBerry PlayBook.
The iGrip Car Cradle really serves as three accessories in one. First and foremost, it's a cradle for in-car use, be it mounted via the headrest mount as shown in the video or via suction cup. With the cradle unmounted, it has a built-in kick stand that makes it handy for watching videos on your PlayBook. And third, you can even use the cradle itself as a case if you want to - it definitely adds a level of protection. MSRP pricing is set for $49.95 and you should see it available from ShopCrackBerry.com as the PlayBook hits the market. Check out the video above to get a closer look!

Press Release: RIM Expands Application Ecosystem for BlackBerry PlayBook - ANDROID APPS on PLAYBOOK!!!
HUGE NEWS! We've been talking about Android Apps running on BlackBerry's tablet since August 2010 (before the PlayBook was ever announced - jump to minute 52 in this podcast) and today we see that our intuition was dead on, and we know how RIM is going to go about delivering Android Apps on the QNX-based OS. In addition to announcing the long awaited C/C++ Native Development Kit for the PlayBook, RIM announced support for existing BlackBerry apps and Android Apps.
Android apps won't come from Android Marketplace itself, but rather Android developers will simply have to repackage, code sign and submit their BlackBerry Java and Android apps to BlackBerry App World from where users will be able to download the apps. The Android and BlackBerry OS apps will run within what RIM has dubbed an "app player" on the device. I like the approach RIM took here. It makes a lot of sense. This way they don't run into any sort of legal issues with android on BlackBerry... rather, Android developers will be signing up as BlackBerry Developers with App World, and distributing built-for-android apps via App World (which kind of makes them BlackBerry apps still, no??). Hopefully we'll see a ton of Android Developers go through this little extra (and free) step. I'd think it would make sense for Android developers to do this. Read the press release for more information. We'll digest this news and be back soon with more opinion on it soon!

RIM Expands Application Ecosystem for BlackBerry PlayBook
BlackBerry PlayBook to support BlackBerry Java and Android apps
Native C/C++ development support added, in addition to HTML5, Flash and AIR support
Support from leading game engines: Ideaworks Labs (AirPlay) and Unity Technologies (Unity 3)
BlackBerry PlayBook becomes a new market opportunity for all the developers who have already created over 25,000 BlackBerry Java apps and more than 200,000 Android apps
WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 24, 2011) - Developers wanting to bring their new and existing apps to the highly anticipated BlackBerry PlayBookTM tablet will soon have additional tools and options to enhance and expand their commercial opportunities. Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today announced plans to greatly expand the application ecosystem for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The BlackBerry PlayBook is scheduled to launch in the U.S. and Canada on April 19.
RIM will launch two optional "app players" that provide an application run-time environment for BlackBerry Java apps and Android v2.3 apps. These new app players will allow users to download BlackBerry Java apps and Android apps from BlackBerry App World and run them on their BlackBerry PlayBook.

Visualized: preconceived notions about personal computer security
See that chart up there? That's a beautiful visualization of a dozen folk models surrounding the idea of home computer security, devised by Michigan State's own Rick Wash. To construct it (as well pen the textual explanations to back it), he interviewed a number of computer users with varying levels of sophistication, with the goal being to find out how normal Earthlings interpreted potential threats to their PC. His findings? A vast amount of home PCs are frequently insecure because "they are administered by untrained, unskilled users." He also found that PCs remain largely at risk despite a blossoming network of preventative software and advice, and almost certainly received an A for his efforts. Hit the source link for more, but only after you've spiffed up, thrown on a pair of spectacles and kicked one foot up on the coffee table that sits in front of you.Visualized: preconceived notions about personal computer security originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 13:23:00 EDT. Samsung Apps store crosses 100 million downloads
Alright, so it may have a bit of an advantage being on both cellphones and TVs, but that's not stopping Samsung from boasting that its Apps store has now joined the 100 million download club. That comes just ten months after it launched, and it looks like Samsung can largely thank Europe for reaching the milestone -- France had the most number of downloads followed by Germany and Spain, and the three countries combined accounted for 40 percent of all downloads from the store, which now has more than 13,000 apps.Samsung Apps store crosses 100 million downloads originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 10:38:00 EDT. Sound Wing: Pioneer Announces Their First HVT Speaker
In the fall of last year, Pioneer introduced the HVT (Horizontal-Vertical Transforming) technology [PDF, in English] during CEATEC 2010 in Tokyo. HVT makes it possible to "drastically reduce the thickness of speakers" and keep down unwanted vibrations - all without losing audio quality, according to Pioneer.

Google And Twitter Both Get A Visit From Gaga
Lady Gaga made a trip to Silicon Valley this week and made visits to tech giants Google and Twitter for sit down interviews. The popular singer spoke with Google and Twitter employees and was interviewed by Google executive Marissa Mayer and Twitter co-founder Evan Williams. Fans also got to submit questions through videos via YouTube, which tallied over 54,000 by the time the interview took place.
Lady Gaga showed up in her requisite fashion and was treated to a video made by Google that showed her rise in popularity on Google Trends and YouTube. There was even a portrait of Lady Gaga made from words in a tag cloud and words that are associated with the pop singer in searches. Some Google employees turned out to be ?little monsters?, which is what Lady Gaga calls her fans. They dressed up in Lady Gaga inspired clothing and got to ask their idol some questions. The interview focused on the pop star’s rise to fame and how the amalgamation of technology and popular culture helped her. Lady Gaga is the first artist to surpass 1 billion views on YouTube and when you search her name on Google it pulls up a whopping 443 million results, something the popular artist confessed to doing herself.
The singer visited Twitter next and she really seemed to appreciate what Twitter allows people to achieve. ?It?s truly genius. What I hope you all realize is you are giving a voice to people who want to feel famous and you don?t have to be a part of an echelon. You don?t have to be in a special club, you don?t have to have a special key and?that?s what I love so much about Twitter,? said Lady Gaga to engineers at Twitter. The 70-minute Google interview is below and it should be pretty entertaining and a must watch for Lady Gaga fans.

Apple's new MacBook Pros continue to freeze, crash
Starting with the launch of Apple's new flagship MacBook Pros in late February, there have been hundred of reports of "hard freezes," the device locking up when users are running multiple programs.
Despite Apple's attempt to cure the problem with an update to OS X 10.6, users are reporting the issue still occurring.
The issue is stemming from the 15 and 17-inch models, each of which feature Sandy Bridge Core i7 quad-core CPUs and AMD Radeo HD graphics processors.
A thread entitled "MacBook Pro 2011 17" hard freeze" on the Apple discussion forum is nearing 70 pages, with most users complaining about the crashes whenever using multiple apps, especially video intensive ones like iMovie or gaming.
One user, dT explains, was able to pinpoint the problem:
The issue occurred when running CPU-heavy processes along with programs that caused graphics processing to shift from the new Sandy Bridge processor to the descrete AMD Radeon graphics processor.
The OS X 10.6.7 update included fixes for "graphics stability" but some users are still having issues.Permalink | Comments
