FCC Looks to Quash MetroPCS, Verizon Lawsuits

The Federal Communication Commission has asked a federal judge to dismiss the lawsuits concerning net neutrality filed against it by MetroPCS and Verizon Wireless. Both MetroPCS and Verizon sued the FCC over its proposed net neutrality regulations, which they say exceed the FCC's jurisdiction. They are seeking to prevent the FCC from passing the proposed laws. The FCC argues, "The Court should dismiss MetroPCS's notice of appeal because it was filed prior to publication of the Open Internet Order in the Federal Register and is thus jurisdictionally barred." The technicality means the lawsuits are invalid, though Verizon and MetroPCS claim there is an exception to standard procedure when proposed rules will have a direct effect on specific parties. In December 2010, the FCC published a number of rules to be used in governing both wired and wireless broadband networks. (follow link to read)

UM students make cheap and portable solar charger / light source for developing nations

Solar power is the most egalitarian of all energy sources, yet residents in many parts of the world still lack access to electricity. Three University of Michigan engineering students have created an affordable solution to this problem -- to the delight of camping geeks everywhere -- with the Emerald, a portable solar panel that does double duty as both a cellphone charger and personal light source. We've seen the personal solar panel idea before, but the price of entry made it an untenable solution for developing nations. Solar-powered light bulbs have been around for a while too, but the Emerald's light lasts for eight hours on a charge (as opposed to the bulbs' two to six hours), and it's able to fully charge a phone in the same time it takes an outlet to do the job. They aim to sell the device for the low, low, price of under twenty bucks for customers in the developing world, which is 90 percent cheaper than other solutions and 100 percent more awesome.Continue reading UM students make cheap and portable solar charger / light source for developing nationsUM students make cheap and portable solar charger / light source for developing nations originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 31 Jan 2011 18:35:00 EDT. Angry Birds Rio Coming to smartphones and tablets in March

I have seen a few previews for the animated movie called Rio at the theater and on TV over the last few months. The Rio flick is an animated carton movie that follows a couple macaws and their adventures. The movie looks very funny. A tie in with the Angry Birds mobile game has been announced.

A special version of Angry Birds called Angry Birds Rio will hit smartphones and tablets in March. The new version of Angry Birds will hit all platforms that currently have versions of Angry Birds available including the iPhone and Android.
In the Rio version of the game the original Angry Birds cast will be kidnapped and taken to Rio where they have to escape their captors and then find Blu and Jewel from the Rio movie. Angry Birds Rio will have 45 levels and will get new levels regularly via updates. Gameplay will be like the original Angry Birds games with some twists from the movie.

World Governments Clamp Down on Anonymous, UK Arrests & FBI Warrants Served

Wikileaks isn’t the best-loved website in the world right now. Anyone associated with the leak page and its crusade against everyone are coming under harsh scrutiny. And that includes Anonymous, the Internet’s blind, vicious animal brain.

As a response to the near-global censure of Wikileaks, Anonymous launched D-DOS attacks at Amazon, PayPal, MasterCard, Visa and a PostFinance, a Swiss bank. MasterCard and Visa both went down under the strain. The website for the Swedish prosecutor going after Assange was also downed in a hail of bots.
Government response has been swift and terrible. The FBI executed 40+ search warrants on members of Anonymous this week. At the same time, 5 members of Anonymous were arrested in the UK for the same attacks.
This isn’t the first time members of Anonymous have run afoul of the law. Back in 2008, a number of them were arrested in the flesh at a protest in Atlanta. Alex Tapanaris, may have been arrested in Greece (but claims it didn’t happen), while two teenagers in the Netherlands were arrested for the pro-Wikileaks attacks last December.
At this point, it is fully clear that “Anonymous” can’t (or never could) rely on anonymity from the entities they strike. So far, the mass of users are protected by sheer numbers and their relatively low level on the “collaboration” flagpole. But arrests like these may have a chilling effect on the people who put the most effort into organizing and executing these mass attacks.

Toshiba?s new 1.8 inch hard drives may mean new improved iPod classic

Apple?s iPod classic could jump from the 60GB capacity to 220GB with the introduction of Toshiba?s new 1.8-inch hard drives. The new MKxx39GSL series of hard drives will be available in 160GB, 200GB, and 220GB capacities. This development may mean not only increased capacity but also improved battery life.

The new drives are single platter and it allows them to fit into the iPod form factor, where older dual disk drives with higher capacities were not used because of their larger size. The MKxx39SGL series will use less power so you could expect the future iPod classic to last longer than the current version?s 36-hours.
The higher capacity would give you enough memory for 55,000 songs, 275 hours of video, or over 34,000 photos. Hardcore music fans or those that are particular about music quality and prefer lossless formats and enormous music libraries will probably celebrate the most should Apple implement this in their next rendition of the iPod classic.

LiveView update fixes Bluetooth blips says Sony Ericsson

A new firmware update for the Sony Ericsson LiveView promises to address the Bluetooth connection errors that soured our review of the companion display. Confirmed incoming back in December, the update tweaks the “most identified reasons” for the LiveView’s random disconnects, something that users told us was more than problem than simply our review unit.

It also boosts the number of supported simultaneous plugins to 30 – handy, since Sony Ericsson says there are now more than 30 on offer in the Android Market – and causes of random reboots and crashes have also been addressed. More information on the update here; let us know how you get on in the comments.

Improved stability in the phone application (update available on Android Market since some weeks ago)
Improved plug-in handling and limit of number of installed plug-ins raised to 30.
Connection stability improved ? most identified reasons for random disconnects should be fixed now.
There were some cases of random reboots reported, and all those reported crashes have now been resolved.
Compatibility with competitor phones is greatly improved, both in regards to stability and to battery life time.

Here?s more evidence that regular people have zero time for things like Google TV, Boxee, and Roku, if only because they?re too complicated for their own good. For one week each family was asked to forgo traditional cable TV in favor of one of the following devices: Apple TV, Google TV, Boxee Box, Xbox 360, and Roku. Android 2.3 security bug shows microSD access vulnerability

A researcher at North Carolina State University is warning of an Android 2.3 security vulnerability that gives attackers access to your personal information, further proof that Gingerbread isn't all sugar and spice (to be fair, that SMS issue has since been remedied). According to Xuxian Jiang, the bug allows malicious websites to access and upload the contents of a user's microSD card, including voicemails, photos, and online banking information to a remote server. The flaw apparently resembles a similar bug in previous version of Android, thought to have been addressed with Gingerbread. However, as Jiang points out, that fix is easily bypassed. Apart from removing the microSD card, disabling JavaScript, or switching to a third-party browser, Android 2.3 users have little recourse in squashing the bug. The folks at eWeek reported that Google is working on a solution to the problem, but there's no word on when we can expect to see an update.Android 2.3 security bug shows microSD access vulnerability originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 29 Jan 2011 10:57:00 EDT. Nokia E7 hits Indonesian pre-order with big promotions push [Update: Scans!]

The Nokia E7 inches ever closer, with the company’s Indonesian site the latest to push the sliding QWERTY smartphone. Expected sometime in February, the E7 has found itself a 6,800,000 Indonesian Rupiahs ($749) unlocked and SIM-free, and according to SlashGear tipster Fransiscus is already being heavily promoted in the country.

In fact, he says Nokia has taken out a full three page newspaper ad for the E7 there, which would certainly imply that the Symbian smartphone is due sooner rather than later. Nokia announced shrinking market share predictions as part of its 2010 financial results last week, with the delayed E7 making no contribution to Q4′s sales as originally expected when the device was officially announced at Nokia World 2010.
With Mobile World Congress fast approaching, it looks like the E7 will land at roughly the same time as we see a bevy of new devices – including some dual-core handsets – from rivals. Nokia has been tipped to be preparing something “interesting” for the show, but so far – beyond whispers of MeeGo devices, either tablets or phones – there’s no confirmation on what exactly that could be.
Update: Fransiscus has come through with scans of the three-page advert:

Toshiba Dynabook Qosmio T750 laptop has a lid that changes color on both sides

It's been a long time since we used a laptop that had a monochromatic display -- it was a giant white block of a thing that is not missed -- but flip around just about every laptop we use today and you find a backside that stubbornly refuses to change color no matter the light that hits it. Is that a problem? Not really, we think it's quite fine since we're not often staring at that bit, but for Toshiba such tedium simply won't do, so it's introducing the Dynabook Qosmio T750 with a color-shifting lid. Turn it in the light and it shifts and shimmers, just like the chameleon paint tuners have been using on custom rides for decades. Here, though, we're told it's done with multiple layers of film, no paint at all. Oh, the inside? A 2.66GHz Intel Core i5-480M, 4GB of DDR 3 memory, and a 15.6-inch, 1366 x 768 display that's LED backlit -- which is also capable of displaying multiple colors, in case you're interested.Toshiba Dynabook Qosmio T750 laptop has a lid that changes color on both sides originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 29 Jan 2011 21:05:00 EDT. Boxhead for iPad exclusive preview video

We're on the floor at Macworld Expo this week, and I had a chance to talk with Dave Swartz of Medl Mobile. This update adds something readers have been requesting: new and better weapons. As you progress, you'll unlock cool new zombie-killing tools like an uzi, a rocket launcher, grenades and even an air strike for when things get really hairy.

You're free to switch weapons at will while you play (those that you've unlocked, of course). I can tell you that the grenades are very satisfying to use. This update will also include some new bad guys and a few other surprises that we can't share with you just yet.

Boxhead fans will certainly enjoy it, and David tells us that you can look for it in the App Store in the first or second week of February.Continue reading Boxhead for iPad exclusive preview videoBoxhead for iPad exclusive preview video originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 28 Jan 2011 17:45:00 EST. Horizontal Symmetry ? The Way of the Future Phone?

The current trend in smartphone design is that of a vertical symmetry. It’s important to make sure the left and the right of the screen, (that being the right and left when the phone is held in a portrait mode,) are equal, or at least appear to be equal. The future of the phone is presented in a project by Jason Wang, a designer who believes that the next logical step in the evolution of the handheld communicator is symmetry in landscape mode. As a proof, he offers a conceptual design by the name of Nokia E2.

Wang believes that as the past several years have yielded a set of smartphones that are overwhelmingly similar to one another, it becomes difficult for the consumer to differentiate between them. He believes that the first step toward a new type of phone is the 21:9 aspect ratio. He notes though, that upon first viewing a traditionally designed 21:9 phone, it lacks visual appeal, especially due to the fact that they’re designed, still, to be held upright.
His solution is the E2, a 21:9 device with a horizontal symmetry, and what he says is “a large screen, a relatively small size, no vertical orientation bias, and no compromises.” Specs for his concept phone are as follows:
4.6″ 21:9 ClearBlack display
Proximity sensor
12 megapixel camera with Xenon flash and 720p recording at 30fps
Concealed SIM and MicroSD slots (under the left side of the back cover, tilted 2 degrees)
3.5 mm headphone jack
Micro USB port
Multi-Purpose button (center, top) 3 zone button/rocker with capacitive layer
HDMI output
Stereo Speaker
Call speaker
Call microphone (with noise-cancellation, activation upon upward facing orientation)
2nd call speaker
2nd call microphone (with noise-cancellation, activation upon upward facing orientation)
*What these two call mics do is assure the user that any way they hold the phone, its the right way.

What do you think? We’re already sort of leaning this way with flip-out keyboards and gamepads like the upcoming XPERIA Play – is this the way of the future?

Number of worldwide Internet users hits 2 billion

The UN has stated this week that worldwide Internet users have ballooned to 2 billion, while mobile phone subscriptions have hit 5 billion.

Says the head of the UN's International Telecommunications Union (via AFP):

At the beginning of the year 2000 there were only 500 million mobile subscriptions globally and 250 million Internet users.

By the beginning of this year 2011 those numbers have mushroomed to over five billion mobile users and two billion subscribers to the Internet.

The Internet usage figure jumped from 1.86 billion at the end of 2009 to 2.08 billion at the end of 2010. Cell phone subscriptions increased from 4.66 billion in 2009 to 5.28 billion. Mobile broadband connections exploded to 940 million, while home broadband connections jumped to 555 million.

Internet usage rates have seen the strongest increases (by percentage) in Arab nations, as well as Russia and China.

Global population now exceeds 6.8 billion.Permalink | Comments

Olympus XZ-1 reviewed: $499 for sweet simplicity

We had a feeling the Olympus XZ-1 would be a winner, and Digital Photography Review seems to think so, too -- it called the 10 megapixel, full-manual point and shoot "the best photographers' compact currently available" at the end of a thorough review. Most of the praise was heaped on that F1.8-2.5 Zuiko lens, providing an "unbeaten combination of range and brightness" whose potent, detailed low-light performance was practically enough to cancel out the publication's worries about the lack of a adjustable noise reduction setting. Though the publication admitted that the camera lacked the customization of certain Micro Four Thirds cousins, it didn't miss most of the advanced controls, preferring the streamlined menus and manual dials for easy access to common adjustments. (Battery charging over USB and a dedicated movie button were also deemed nice touches.) In fact, the only major ding DPReview had for Olympus was the complete omission of auto exposure and autofocus locks for focus-and-recompose shooting, but if you're willing to snap shots using Olympus's 11 AF points and aren't looking to tote a set of expensive interchangeable lenses around, this might be the one. ZyXEL MWR211 Mobile Router Review

Mobile hotspots are relatively common by now, and more and more smartphones offer data-sharing among their features; what, though, if you’ve already got a USB modem and are tied into – or content with – your existing data package? ZyXEL believes it has the answer in the shape of the MWR211 mobile router, a palm-sized way to share your connection while mobile. Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

Hardware
At 4.11 x 3.1 x 1.02 inches and 5.33 oz the ZyXEL MWR211 is a bigger block than most MiFi mobile hotspots, despite not actually having a 3G/4G modem built in. What you do get is WiFi b/g/n with support for WEP/WPA/WPA2 and WPS, an ethernet port and an integrated 3,000 mAh battery which ZyXEL reckon is good for up to 2hrs of standalone runtime.
Setup is straightforward, but also more flexible than with a regular mobile hotspot. You can either plug in a USB modem – ZyXEL has a list of compatible models – and use that to get online, or you can plug in a regular wired internet connection and share that via WiFi instead. If you use a USB modem then the ethernet WWAN port can be used to connect a wired device instead (ZyXel also make a larger version, the MWR222, with two USB and two ethernet ports).

What that means is that the MWR211 can not only share out your USB dongle’s connection but allow more than one device to access hotel internet service. There’s also a physical WiFi switch (as well as a physical power switch) allowing you to turn the wireless off altogether and solely use the ethernet port. As with a regular router there’s MAC filtering, port forwarding, VPN support and a NAT firewall; you also get data usage monitoring, with user-assignable alerts to let you know if you’re nearing your monthly allowance, together with prioritized bandwidth (so that, say, VoIP traffic is treated as more important than gaming traffic) and even the ability to assign bandwidth limits by IP address or for clients hooked up to the ethernet port. Unlike most mobile hotspots there’s no artificial limits on WiFi clients, either, so assuming you have sufficient bandwidth you can share it with as many devices as you like.
Performance
Plugging in a modem got us online straight away, with the default SSID and password easily changed through the web interface. We tried a number of different USB modems from various carriers and had no problems at all; similarly, having plugged in a wired connection from our router, we were able to share that connection as well. A simple row of LEDs show USB, ethernet, WiFi, WPS, battery and power status; although a display of some sort would be preferable, the browser-based control panel served its purpose.

Speed was obviously dependent on the 3G or 4G network we hooked up, though we noticed no difference in performance whether we were using the USB modem directly or connected via the ZyXEL. Battery life, meanwhile, fell in line with the company’s estimates, which means you’re getting around half the time most mobile hotspots with integrated modems promise. An AC adapter is bundled for recharging or using the MWR211 in a fixed position, and we had no issues with overheating.
Wrap-Up
A dedicated mobile hotspot or a hotspot app on your phone is always going to be more elegant than the ZyXEL; with a USB modem hanging off the back, and given its physical heft, this isn’t a device that slips comfortably into a shirt pocket, for instance. Still, what you lose in discretion you gain in flexibility. Being able to pick and choose between multiple networks depending on the coverage and data plan pricing of each is a real advantage, especially if you’re travelling and want to get online with a local data stick or make the most of a hotel connection. USB modems also tend to be cheaper than their hotspot counterparts, though obviously there’s the price of the MWR211 to take into account as well; ZyXEL given an RRP of $114.99, but you can find the mobile router for around $85 online.

For pure mobility purposes the 2hr battery is underwhelming, though of course you can easily unplug the modem and hook it up to your notebook direct if you can’t find a power point. Most users will probably find mobile hotspot apps easier to handle, but for those who regularly travel or who juggle a few USB modems to cater for different areas of coverage, the ZyXEL MWR211 does a lot to warrant inclusion in your gadget bag.

UN: worldwide internet users hit two billion, cellphone subscriptions top five billion

The UN's International Telecommunication Union predicted last fall that the number of internet users worldwide would hit two billion by the end of 2010, and it's now issued its full report that confirms just that -- 2.08 billion, to be specific. As the ITU's Hamadoun Toure notes, that number represents a huge leap from the mere 250 million internet users that existed a decade ago, and it means that roughly one third of the world's population now has internet access of some sort -- of those, 555 million have a fixed broadband subscription, and 950 million have mobile broadband. Just as impressive as that (if not moreso), are the number of cellphone subscriptions worldwide, which has now crossed the five billion mark. That's up from 500 million at the beginning of the year 2000, although the agency notes that it's only accounted for "subscriptions," and not individual users. Any way you slice it, however, that's quite a record of growth for the first decade of the 21st century.

Apple Seeking RFID Expert in Recent Job Postings

We all know Google is pushing big into the NFC market with the inclusion of support in the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, and it looks as if Apple is readying themselves to be ready for the next generation of mobile payment systems with two new job listings on their corporate site.

Among the required areas of knowledge for these jobs is RFID, which s a type of near-field communication (NFC). Essentially Apple is looking for a hardware developer to help turn the iPhone into an “e-wallet” for transactions.
These job listings line up pretty well with recent rumor that Apple is readying an “e-wallet” strategy for both the iPhone 5 and second generation iPad. Some strategists even believe that Apple could have its own mobile payment service up and running as early as mid-2011 which is the expected launch date for the next iPhone.
As to how Apple might implement such a system, rumors are circulating around payments going through its iTunes payment service. Hopefully we will see more of this develop as we near the announcement of the second generation iPad and iPhone 5.

Google Retooling the Android Market

Speaking at an event in San Francisco, Google group manager for Android platform Eric Chu said that it is working on changes to the Android Market that it hopes will boost developers' interest in the market as well as improve the end user experience. The Android Market has yet to officially support in-app purchases, and though this feature was supposed to debut in 2010, it has yet to appear. Google says this feature is coming soon. Google is also working with more network operators to enable carrier billing. Right now, only AT&T and T-Mobile USA in the U.S. support carrier billing. Sprint and Verizon Android users must use a credit card to purchase apps. Google also said it is hoping to improve app discovery in the Market by refining app classifications, improving search, and adjusting how apps are ranked. Google didn't provide specifics on when these changes might be integrated into the market.(follow link to read)

Nexus S? Random Reboot Bug To Be Squashed By Mid-February

The Nexus S is a pretty wonderful phone, in most regards. Built by Samsung after months of finetuning the process with their Galaxy S line, it's a stunning piece of hardware in person ? amongst Samsung's best, perhaps. More importantly, it's one of the few high-end handsets that gives a pure, unadulterated Android experience as Google sees fit.

Alas, it has its flaws. Namely, it seems to reset whenever the hell it wants to. Amidst much clamoring and bickering around the Internets, Google has stayed mostly mum on the issue. Until now.

Twelve South's BookArc for Air stand cozies up around your MacBook Air

Twelve South's made somewhat of a name for itself by crafting unexpected (and generally visually pleasing) accessories for everything Apple, but the ouftit's latest just seems particularly superfluous. The BookAir for Air is described as a vertical stand for the MacBook Air, enabling you to hoist your new ultraportable upright for use with a desktop monitor and keyboard. 'Course, we have to believe that only a smattering of individuals have any real interest in using their MBA as a desktop replacement, but hey, at least there's now a stand should you fit into that category. She'll be on sale soon for $39.99, with initial shipments to head out next month.

The Next Generation of Leak Sites: 5 Wikileaks Descendants

From Apple to his own once-loyal followers, Julian Assange is suffering from a lack of support on all sides. The future of Wikileaks is questionable at best. But that website’s death (or neutering) won’t be enough to stop a new wave of whistleblowing. The first new wave of leak sites is already here.

1. OpenLeaks: Formed by Daniel Domscheit-Berg, former co-spokesman of Wikileaks, and a number of other people who once worked under Assange.

Location: OpenLeaks.org.
Purpose: To act as an intermediary between leakers, and corporate watchdog groups / news agencies. OpenLeaks will not profit from the exchange of information. Leakers will be able to designate a single recipient who will have exclusive access to the information for a limited embargo period. After that ends, all OpenLeaks “partners” will gain access to the data.
2. GreenLeaks (via Denmark): Formed by an ad executive and with the support of the Nordic branch of GreenPeace. They have a number of volunteers and private backers.

Location: GreenLeaks.org
Purpose: In their own words, “Counterintelligence for the Earth”. There is no one, Assange-like leader to the organization and the focus seems to be on publicizing leaks, not the site itself.
3. GreenLeaks (via Germany): Yes, they both have the same name. This one was formed by Aussie docu-journalist Scott Millwood. The two agencies may end up in a legal battle for the name.

Location: Greenleaks.com
Purpose: To spread leaks “of environmental significance”. They have a strong central head and spokesman- Scott Millwood- but differ from WikiLeaks in having an open agenda in their distribution of information. They “take an active role in facilitating stakeholders using information”. In other words, they aren’t just throwing data out there for people to digest, but assembling it to argue a point and then handing it out.
4. EnviroLeaks: The poor man’s version of the two above sites. Right now, they’re mainly collecting data from WikiLeaks and gathering damning data that is, nonetheless, currently available.

Location: EnviroLeaks.org
Purpose: Information aggregation. There’s nothing new here, but it’s a good place to find existing data organized in a useful manner.
5. BalkanLeaks: A bunch of journos and activists committed to creating a Wiki-leaks style site with a regional focus on the Balkans.

Location: Balkanleaks.eu
Purpose: As stated on the site, “to promote transparency and fight the nexus of organized crime and political corruption in the Balkan states.” It’s kind of sobering to think of the risk these folks are taking. Their site isn’t particularly slick or fancy, but it represents a stab of resistance that could never have happened without the Internet.

Fujitsu's tablet is easy like a hammer, cozy as a scarf, and never scratchy like Windows 7 (video)

There's no denying that Meinolf Althaus brings some personality to an otherwise stoic slate. Good thing too, because the idea of Fujitsu and Microsoft spawning a stylus-driven tablet from a session of ugly-bumping doesn't elicit much excitement in the burgeoning tablet space. Enter Mr. Althaus who begins his lesson with an explanation that software user elements must be based on recognition and not on something that's remembered. You know, like a hammer (or Fujitsu's new slate) which is obvious in its usability and function. He then likens the current crop of consumer-based tablets to chocolate bars: they're great for consumption but do little to help with content creation unlike Fujitsu's Windows-based slate that's optimized for corporations -- spreadsheets naturally, not music or illustrations. The highlight, however, has to be the point in the video where he equates the Windows 7 user experience to a "scratchy" kitchen sponge that's useful for utilitarian tasks like cleaning the dishes. Fujitsu's tablet, he contends, is "cozy" like a silk scarf thanks to a custom-built layer that sits on top of the standard Win7 desktop. Brilliant. We'll take two... Meinolfs that is. You will too after watching the video embedded after the break.

Monster iMotion adds gesture control to your iPod, cigarette lighter

We haven't always gotten along with Monster or enjoyed the MSRP of its products, but this latest one shows a bit of promise -- and a bit of price gouging too. It's the Monster iMotion, a car adapter for your iPod or iPhone that not only will charge it via the cigarette lighter but lets you get your motion control on, too. A wave of the mitten can be used to change tracks and the universally familiar "talk to the hand" gesture can pause. It doesn't look quite as comprehensive as EyeSight's tech, but it does have the advantage of being available now -- for $120. Hulu to become online cable provider?

Despite continued growth and popularity, Hulu is allegedly in serious talks to become an online cable operator, completely re-branding itself.

The new company would broadcast live and on-demand content over the Web to paying customers.

Moving from its current free, ad-based business, and its Hulu Plus subscription plan, the new service would instead charge customers for bundles of channels like ABC, Fox, NBC, FoodNetwork, Disney, FX and more.

Hulu responded by saying "we do not comment on rumors and speculation, which is what this is."

The company brought in around $260 million in revenue for 2010, up from $108 million in 2009.

Hulu is jointly owned by NBCU, Fox and Disney.Permalink | Comments

Microsoft sold 2.1 million Windows Phone 7 in 2010

ZDnet has reported today that Microsoft sold 2.1 million licenses of Window Phone 7 to OEMs in 2010, tacking on almost 900,000 in December alone.

The figures come via senior product manager Greg Sullivan, who said the pace continued to accelerate.

Additionally, surveys of Windows Phone 7 owners concluded that 93 percent were "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with their device. Another 90 percent would recommend the product to others.

Says Sullivan: We're still in the early stages. When people use this phone, they really, really like it.

The Microsoft Marketplace now has 6800 applications, and is growing at 400 apps per week.

It is unclear how many of those 2.1 million units have been sold to end-users, however.Permalink | Comments

Navigon introduces the Design Car Kit at Macworld 2011

We are live on the ground in San Francisco this week for Macworld 2011, and one of our first meetings was with Navigon, which has reinvented itself in the US over the past few years, going from a company that makes personal navigation devices to strictly a software company thanks to the MobileNavigator iOS app and its variants. The overall smartphone nav app market has grown by 117 percent in the last few years, and largely due to the iPhone app (which reached 1 million downloads last August, a number made much more impressive when you realize the app usually sells for US$50 and up), that's pushed Navigon's own growth hugely as well.

In the past year, the company released version 1.7 of the software, which added improvements in the form of a paid in-app Zagat rating tie-in as well as free updates, like Google Local information. The last update also added across-the-board compatibility with the iPad, and Navigon told me that many of its iPad users were not using Apple's tablet in the car itself, but at home to plan out and see in motion the routes they later transferred over to their mobile devices.

The company hasn't released any hardware in the US for a few years (though "our main business is still hardware" in Europe, they said), but that will change with the Design Car Kit, an iPhone 4 holding stand that attaches via suction cup to your car's window -- it's designed to hold your iPhone while it runs MobileNavigator (or any other app, really -- there is a charging cable included that's "extra long" for easy access, but there are no electronics in the kit itself). Navigon told me that they thought there was a place for a quality holder on the market, and the device certainly seems well-designed, with the suction cup attaching via a release that won't let go easily when locked down.Continue reading Navigon introduces the Design Car Kit at Macworld 2011Navigon introduces the Design Car Kit at Macworld 2011 originally appeared on TUAW on Thu, 27 Jan 2011 08:00:00 EST. Final Draft coming for iPhone and iPad in Spring 2011

Popular screenwriting tool Final Draft is finally making its way to the iPhone and iPad. The company confirmed last year that it was working on a companion iPad and iPhone application and that app is now close to being finished. While the company has not announced an exact date for launch, a recent email sent to subscribers points to a Spring 2011 debut for its iPad and presumably iPhone version.

According to Final Draft's Facebook page, the iOS app will be compatible with version 8 FDX files and will support two-way transfer so you can easily move your script from your iOS to your desktop and back. While traveling, the tool will let you edit script files and add notes using your iOS device. It will be perfect for those on-the-go moments of inspiration.

Budding screenwriters should head over to Final Draft's website and sign up for its iPad alerts so you can be the first to snag this version when it debuts.

Personal hotspot for Verizon iPhone priced at $20 for 2 GB, order pages live on Apple Store

Update: Apple's order pages for the Verizon iPhone are live on the Apple Store, but of course you can't actually order a phone yet -- MobileCrunch suggests practicing your order process just for fun and to refine your plan selections. [Just kidding.]
Verizon Wireless spokesperson Brenda Raney confirmed that the personal hotspot add-on for the iPhone will cost US$20 per month and will provide 2 GB of data. The personal hotspot feature will let you share your cellular data connection with up to five devices via Wi-Fi. This 2 GB of data is separate from the $30 unlimited data plan and is allocated only for mobile hotspot usage. You should watch your usage closely as overages will be charged at a costly $20 per GB.

Rather than undercut its popular DROID lineup with a free mobile hotspot, the carrier decided to play it safe and offer iPhone owners the same rate as Android owners. Select Android handsets on Verizon include 3G mobile hotspot, and this service is billed at $20 for 2 GB of usage. Verizon does offer free mobile hotspot for the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, but that plan was adopted to boost sales of those webOS handsets. Judging by analysts' expectations, the Verizon iPhone won't need that additional boost.

Verizon may be the first carrier to offer personal hotspot on the iPhone, but it may not be last. Reports suggest the feature will be included in iOS 4.3 and will be rolled out worldwide. Similar to MMS in iOS 3.0, individual carriers will have the choice to enable this feature for its users. Now that Verizon has confirmed unlimited data and $20 personal hotspot, it will be interesting to see how AT&T responds. Any predictions?

Sony PlayStation Suite & PS Store for Android gaming

The Sony NGP isn’t the company’s only gaming announcement; there’s also the PlayStation Suite, a new download store and licensing program that promises to bring PlayStation gaming to Android devices. The PS Suite combines a new PlayStation Store for Android 2.3 devices and above – and which will be initially populated with PSOne classic titles – and a development program for coders to produce their own titles for inclusion in that store.

The NGP will also be able to access the PS Store and use the same games as Android devices. While Sony isn’t announcing any specific titles or handsets that will use it, we’re assuming that the PlayStation Phone aka XPERIA Play will make its official debut at MWC 2011 next month, and be the first Android 2.3 device to get access once it launches.
There’ll also be a PlayStation Certified licensing scheme for hardware manufacturers, which presumably will apply not only to smartphones themselves but to accessories; after all, not all devices will come with the XPERIA Play’s slide-out gaming control pad. More details at MWC 2011.

Motorola Mobility reports Q4, full year earnings; Q1 2011 guidance bleak

Motorola Mobility on Wednesday reported its fourth quarter and full year 2010 earnings. Huawei sues Motorola to block Siemens deal

Huawei Technologies of China has sued Motorola this week in an effort to block the company's sale of its network equipment unit to Nokia Siemens.

The company wants the $1.2 billion deal to be restructured to avoid infringing on Huawei's IP rights.

Huawei is demanding the deal exclude any equipment that is based on GSM or UMTS standards.

Allegedly, Motorola does not have a material UMTS business as it resells Huawei's UMTS equipment for wireless service and therefore should not be able to sell that gear.

Motorola split its company in half earlier this year, seperating its phone and set-top operations from its other core operations.

Both companies involved in the deal are still awaiting approval from Chinese anti-trust authorities, but say the case is "without merit" and hope to close in the next month.Permalink | Comments

Mythical white iPhone 4 appears on AT&T's account management system

Like the sightings of Bigfoot, Elvis and leprechauns, the white iPhone 4 has a life of its own. Mentions of it keep popping up, yet nobody really ever seems to get a picture that's more than a blur or a fantastic Photoshopped fake.
The latest sighting emerged on BGR, where it was reported that two entries appeared in AT&T's Online Account Management system. One was for the little unicorn, the 16 GB White model, and the other was for the full-sized 32 GB unicorn.
The online account tool doesn't supply any information about when the bleached iPhone 4 will actually be found on store shelves. BGR conjectured that it might be just in time for iPhone users to jump to the white model, get locked into a new two-year contract and then bash their heads repeatedly against a wall when the iPhone 5 appears in June or July.
If I were an Apple executive, I'd announce it this week to rain on the Macworld Expo parade. What about you, TUAW readers? Do you even care about the white iPhone 4 anymore? If you do, when do you think it will appear?

iPad high resolution display rumored for third generation

According to IDC research manager Tom Mainelli, the iPad 3 and not the iPad 2 will be the lucky recipient of a high-resolution display. Previous rumors have repeatedly suggested that the iPad 2 will sport a high-resolution "Retina" display. Most of these rumors came from Asian sources and were cautiously repeated with skepticism that Apple could pack a Retina Display into the iPad 2 and keep the price competitive.

Mainelli bucks this trend by asserting that it is production and not cost that is the limiting factor for a 10-inch high-resolution display. The technology exists and is reasonably priced, but there are no production facilities capable of producing a Retina Display at the volume Apple will need for the iPad 2. Apple sold over 7 million iPads in its last quarter, and these numbers are expected to skyrocket in the upcoming year.

Rather than experience lagging sales due to component shortages. Apple may have opted to push off the high-resolution display and manufacture the iPad 2 with a standard resolution display. Apple is reportedly prepping manufacturers for the iPad 3, giving them time to ramp up their display production capabilities for the third generation tablet. If this analysis by Mainelli pans out and the iPad 2 does ship with a standard display, will you be disappointed? Disappointed to the point that you bypass the iPad 2 and wait for the iPad 3? Looks like Macworld attendees will be able to use their conference badges in many different ways as eleven of the San Francisco?s strip clubs will offer either free admission or half-off admission as appreciation for bringing commerce to their fair town.

This ad was spotted in the SF weekly. There are tons of tech conferences happening all the time in San Francisco, so I?m not sure if this is outlier or a trend that?s starting. So if you?re attending Macworld and have lots of free time hit up all eleven clubs with your dollar bills and show them how Mac users make it rain.

ColorWare hits a lurid low with Dyson Air Multiplier

When it comes to ColorWare, the surprise is never the choice of colors, it's the price you'll pay for exclusivity on a lime-green and suicide-orange paint job. This time its the already overpriced $300 Dyson Air Multiplier getting the $450 ColorWare treatment. For that absurd price you'll be treated to a brand new "bladeless fan" personalized with the airfoil, base, and control colors of your choosing from a healthy palette of gloss and sofTouch finishes. Of course, there's always the $150 option to send in your existing product for ColorWarezation, assuming you can go three weeks without habitually demonstrating the concepts of inducement and entrainment to baffled pets and family.ColorWare hits a lurid low with Dyson Air Multiplier originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 25 Jan 2011 07:11:00 EDT. New Apple iPhone ad brings AT&T and Verizon together

Love, peace and harmony. That's what Apple seems to be pushing in the latest iPhone advertisement to hit the airwaves.
The ad, titled "Two is Better than One," shows a pair of iPhones performing side-by-side synchronized app usage. The action is backed by that beautiful piece of waltz music used to good effect by ice skaters and Stanley Kubrick, Johann Strauss's "On the Beautiful Blue Danube."
At the end of the 30-second piece, AT&T and Verizon logos are seen side-by-side. Considering the level of sniping being done by the two carriers, it's nice to see Apple stepping in as a mediator. For US smartphone users, it's great to finally have a choice.
Check out the ad, which was captured off of a TV screen by YouTube user DoctoriTouch, on the next page.

Apple?s Motion-Sensitive Keyboard Patent: A Sane Compromise

The boys at MacRumors have uncovered a new Apple patent application. This one covers a physical keyboard with motion sensing cameras built into the frame. The idea is to merge the keyboard and mouse into one device. There would be both a “typing” and a “mouse” mode, toggled through a key or key combo.

So you’d type in your URL, tap the Mouse Mode button, and finger scroll up and down the page. I’m not really sure how much more comfortable hovering your hands above the keyboard will be, but I can certainly see this being a faster option. What’s most interesting in the patent app is Apple’s seeming admission of the failure of non-traditional keyboards.
Over the last forty years there have been numerous attempts made to introduce an alternative to the standard keyboard. The changes include, but are not limited to, non-QWERTY layouts, concave and convex surfaces, capacitive keys, split designs, membrane keys, etc. However, although such alternative keyboards may provide improved usability or ergonomics, they have failed to replace or duplicate the commercial success of the conventional mechanical keyboard.
Whether or not this proposed product ever sees the light of day, it’s clear that Apple still sees the traditional keyboard / display set-up as dominating for the foreseeable future. The iPad’s keyboard is more comfortable than any other touchscreen keyboard I’ve used. But it still can’t compare to the feeling of striking real keys.
I’m sure someone else said something similar about typewriters once.

T-Mobile CEO Confirms Sidekick and Samsung 4G Phones

Speaking at an event, T-Mobile USA's new CEO, Philipp Humm, confirmed that the company plans to launch a 4G version of its Sidekick messenger phones and a 4G version of the Samsung Galaxy S. Humm said, "We will launch as new the Samsung Galaxy S 4G ... and coming soon, will also be a Sidekick 4G. Everybody knows the Sidekick, and we're going to relaunch the Sidekick and bring it as a 4G device, Android based, into the market." Humm didn't provide specific details about the devices, nor did he say what speeds the new devices would actually provide. Samsung has already hinted that it plans major announcements for next month's Mobile World Congress event, and has a press conference scheduled for February 13. (follow link to read)

SlashGear Morning Wrap-Up: January 24 2011

Let’s start this fine Monday with a launch straight into space: once with an Android Device, another time with a Samsung balloon full of paper planes. Next lets get back to Earth with the continuation of the 3D wave with some Tegra 2 3D Chips that’ll be popping up this spring. Grab a big fat update to ADW Launcher EX with several new docks and fixes. Next order of business, Florian Mueller’s been found bunked out – who is he? He’s the guy who found a bunch of Oracle codes in Android’s open source code, saying the suit against Android has total footing -doesn’t appear that way any more. Then remember that $10K iTunes gift card prize for the 10 billionth app downloaded? The mother of the girl who won it hung up on the “you won” call. Check out a column by Don Reisinger by the name of Dear Logitech: The Revue Is Overpriced, and another column by Tim Bajarin called Techies can be Foodies Too Finally, make sure you’re not getting had – you probably don’t need AOL anymore. All this and MORE on SlashGear Morning Wrap-Up.

It's no OS 6 unfortunately, but it's still an update. Telefonica Spain has released OS 5.0.0.1049 for the BlackBerry Bold 9000. If you're still using this Cadillac device you should give this one a go. I was actually contemplating going back to my Bold 9000 last night, so maybe this will be incentive to fire it up for a few days. No reports in on whats new just yet, so be sure to swing by the forums and let us know. Thanks Jim!
