Doctor Who?s Sonic Screwdriver Is Your New TV Remote [VIDEO]
Sometimes a product tie-in with a TV show or movie is pretty poorly thought out (Star Trek waffles, anyone?). And sometimes it's dead-on perfect, as in the case of this gesture-based remote control modeled after the "sonic screwdriver" that the title character on BBC's Doctor Who carries around (the series returns for its season premiere Sept. 1).
For the uninitiated, the sonic screwdriver is the Doctor's do-anything tool that gets him out of various scrapes by picking advanced alien locks, modifying phones to enable them to make calls across time and space, and, yes, unscrewing things. Of course, it does all these amazing things wirelessly, at a (r… Continue reading...

Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 4 will support HiDPI, MacBook Pro Retina Display in 'the coming months'
You know who's likely to buy the MacBook Pro with Retina Display? Creative professionals (obviously). So you know what programs should really be optimized for that 2,880 x 1,800 screen? Try Photoshop, or Lightroom. Adobe hears your frustration, and apparently empathizes mightily: the company just posted a blog post promising Photoshop CS6, Lightroom 4 and Photoshop Touch will support HiDPI, including the MacBook Pro's Retina Display, within the "coming months." (No, this near-term update does not include Photoshop Elements, unfortunately.) While that timetable is on the vague side, the outfit says having a Creative Cloud membership will ensure you get that update sooner. Until then, your frankengadget renders will still look a little blurry, sorry.Filed under: SoftwarePhotoshop CS6 and Lightroom 4 will support HiDPI, MacBook Pro Retina Display in 'the coming months' originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Aug 2012 16:34:00 EDT. GIMP now (finally) available as a native Mac app
This is something that's been a long time coming, and it's finally here. GIMP is an excellent Photoshop-esque open source photo editor. While it's been available on Mac for a long time, it has required the X11 Window environment, which itself needs a separate (and somewhat messy) installation. For a long time, the programmers working on GIMP have been promising to eventually take it native, but it hasn't happened until just recently. As of version 2.8.2, you can now simply go grab the GIMP .dmg file from the main website, and then install and run on your Mac as needed.
That's good news for those of us who appreciate a powerful photo editor like this but don't necessarily have the cash for big-name apps like Photoshop or Pixelmator. Congrats to everyone who's worked on GIMP in the past. If you like the app and want to support great open sourced work, they could probably use a donation or two.

Want to follow the Paralympic Games on your BlackBerry? Here's the best app for it.
With the 2012 Paralympics kicking off in London, many of you will be interested in keeping up to date with the news on your BlackBerry. We've already covered some of the best Olympic applications available for BlackBerry smartphones just a few weeks ago and If you had one and deleted after the games, it may well be time to re-install. My personal favorite is the London 2012: Official Results App For The Olympic and Paralympic games. I used the app routinely throughout the recent Olympic games and it not only showed me all the news from the games but also notified me of Team GB's medals with its notifications options. It is colourful, user friendly and has a huge variety of features. It's well worth checking out if you want to keep up with all the goings on from the Paralympic Games. Tweet Marker Plus rebranded as Watermark, adds App.net support
Developer Manton Reece is the brain behind Tweet Marker Plus, a US$5 monthly service developed to index tweets and provide search and filtering tools. Now Reece is rebranding the service as Watermark in a move to distance it from Twitter and syncing.
According to a post about the rebranding on Macstories.net, Reece is distancing Watermark from Twitter due to the controversy over the changes to that service's API and its strained relationship with third-party developers. While Watermark continues to use the same infrastructure and provide the same functions, it's now a "client and archive tool" that continues to work with Twitter apps that have been designed to support it and that can expand outside of simple Twitter support.
Watermark has built-in support for Dalton Caldwell's App.net, a new real-time communication service currently in alpha and priced at $50 per year. Watermark includes an App.net option which pulls in posts from App.net friends and archives all of your posts. App.net is still lacking in many features, but Reece's support of the nascent platform is a good sign of what to expect as more developers embrace the API and as App.net evolves.Tweet Marker Plus rebranded as Watermark, adds App.net support originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Wed, 29 Aug 2012 12:00:00 EST. Apple, Qualcomm tried to purchase exclusive access to TSMC chip production
Bloomberg is reporting that both Apple and Qualcomm were turned down by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in attempts by the two companies to invest cash and gain exclusive access to smartphone chips.
Each company proposed investing more than US$1 billion in order to have TSMC set aside chip production capacity exclusively for them. Qualcomm and Apple are both trying to secure the chipmaking capacity to satisfy demand for smartphones, and either one of the deals would provide Apple with an alternative to Samsung -- which currently builds the primary silicon for both the iPhone and iPad. For Qualcomm, it's a necessary deal as well. The company's earnings are being limited by shortages of mobile phone chips it designs, and it no longer operates its own factories.
TSMC is willing to devote a couple of factories to a single customer, but wants to retain control of its plants and doesn't need cash for investments, according to TSMC executives. The company is wary of dedicating a facility to one customer or product, since if the product or technology changes, they're stuck with a plant that requires a significant investment in order to repurpose it.
For the present time, negotiations are apparently continuing although TSMC, Apple, and Qualcomm are not commenting.Apple, Qualcomm tried to purchase exclusive access to TSMC chip production originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Wed, 29 Aug 2012 11:30:00 EST. Samsung Announces The Galaxy Camera: 4.8? Display, 16MP CMOS Sensor, 21x Zoom, And Jelly Bean
At the IFA conference in Berlin, Samsung has just announced the Galaxy Camera, a 4.8-inch Android-powered camera with WiFi, 3G (or 4G) connectivity, and a quad-core SoC.
See, digital cameras have lost their swagger. With the combination of pretty decent micro lenses and smartphones, the digital imaging sector has been left to the serious hobbyists and professionals. But Samsung, following a precedent set by the Nikon CoolPix S800c, is looking boost the point-and-shoot business with a dash of Android.

On September 21, T-Mobile USA may try to convince you NOT to buy the iPhone 5
T-Mobile may not be getting the iPhone 5 this year, making them once again the only major US carrier bereft of Apple's multi-million selling mobile device, and if they can't have it, dammit, they're going to make sure you don't have one either. This according to David Beren at TmoNews, who received a couple of images in his inbox hinting at what the future just might hold, or rather not hold, for T-Mobile USA. Based on both pieces of information that just came into our inbox, we?re trying to draw two conclusions, one that T-Mobile isn?t getting the iPhone 5, which shouldn?t surprise anyone. The second is that with the receipt of new Monthly4G microSIM kits supporting the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, T-Mobile is close to announcing some news about their network refarm. The second of the two images details September Training Priorities (Retail, Branded, RPS) and includes a section on Selling Against the iPhone. September 21 is, of course, the day iMore learned Apple will be launching the iPhone 5 in the US. If T-Mo wants their reps selling against it, odds are it's because they won't be selling it. T-Mobile has historically been incompatible with the iPhone due to their use of the less common AWS frequencies for 3G. The lack of an official iPhone on their network has led to severe competitive problems for T-Mobile in the past. Since the iPhone 5 may support LTE, which T-Mobile won't start supporting until 2013, that mat not be likely to change any time soon. Previously, the 3G incompatibility meant anyone running an unlocked iPhone on T-Mobile's network was limited to 2G EDGE speeds. Still, over a million T-Mobile customers chose to do just that. In recent months, T-Mobile has been offering cheap family plans and reassigning compatible bands to 3G to help give those unofficial iPhone customers a better value and experience. T-Mobile even placed a bubble around Apple's WWDC 2012 event back in June as a symbolic gesture. While nothing is official until Apple makes a proper announcement, if they're once again frozen out of the iPhone party this year, September 21 isn't going to be a happy day at T-Mobile USA regardless of their training plans. Logitech unveils new Ultimate Ears range, includes $99 mobile boombox (video)
Logitech's Ultimate Ears marque is unveiling a plethora of new products designed to keep you smothered in music from the moment you wake up. First up is a trio of speakers that push tunes from your smartphone, including a $180 WiFi-connected Smart Radio, a $250 Boombox and a $100 Mobile Boombox, the latter of which seems like it could take on Jawbone's Jambox and win on price alone. If you prefer strapping your tunes to your skull, the company's got a lovely looking pair of $400 in-ear monitor-style earphones that are said to be the closest you'll get to a professional set. Cans-wise, the range is topped by a $350 pair of Bluetooth-headphones that are built for the rigors of being tossed in your bag when you reach the office. If you're worried about nursing your battery after a long day, the company thoughtfully bundled a cable in the set. If your wallet won't stretch to those prices, lower-spec wired versions are available for $200 and $100, respectively. For those of us who've found our sets die at the cable connections, the company's smartly built all of theirs to be braided, detachable and each one has an in-line hands-free kit as standard. The range goes live in Europe in September, so we've got pictures, video and PR galore to whet your appetite in the meantime. Samsung posts internal memo regarding loss to Apple
As undoubtedly the entire world knows by now, Apple recently won its patent lawsuit against its largest rival, Samsung. The jury ruled that Samsung owes $1.049 billion in damages for infringing on seven patents that Apple owns, mainly related to design and certain functions of smartphones.Samsung has released an internal memo, showing they do not plan to give up, especially since they won the same case in multiple other nations before losing here. The memo:On Friday, August 24, 2012, the jury verdict in our trial against Apple was announced at the US District Court for the Northern District of California. We initially proposed to negotiate with Apple instead of going to court, as they had been one of our most important customers. However, Apple pressed on with a lawsuit, and we have had little choice but to counter-sue, so that we can protect our company. Certainly, we are very disappointed by the verdict at the US District Court for the Northern District of California (NDCA), and it is regrettable that the verdict has caused concern amongst our employees, as well as our loyal customers. However, the judge's final ruling remains, along with a number of other procedures. We will continue to do our utmost until our arguments have been accepted. The NDCA verdict starkly contrasts decisions made by courts in a number of other countries, such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, and Korea, which have previously ruled that we did not copy Apple's designs. These courts also recognized our arguments concerning our standards patents. History has shown there has yet to be a company that has won the hearts and minds of consumers and achieved continuous growth, when its primary means to competition has been the outright abuse of patent law, not the pursuit of innovation. We trust that the consumers and the market will side with those who prioritize innovation over litigation, and we will prove this beyond doubt.Permalink | Comments
iOS and Android make for fastest tech adoption ever
Mobile marketing and analytics firm Flurry has another great research post up, this time about the speed of adoption for both iOS and Android. This one goes a little far into comparing apples and oranges, so to speak, but it's still interesting. Flurry notes that both iOS and Android app usages has blown up in the last few years, so much so that it's seeing traffic increases of over a few hundred percent from the past year in places like China, Brazil, and Chile.
Flurry now estimates that there are over 640 million iOS and Android devices running apps worldwide, and given the huge growth of that number, as well as the big numbers behind app and data usage on those devices, these smartphones are being adopted by users "10X faster than that of the 80s PC revolution, 2X faster than that of 90s Internet Boom and 3X faster than that of recent social network adoption."
Unfortunately, Flurry doesn't share the exact numbers behind those stats (not to mention that it's hard to compare numbers like that anyway, given how tough it is to calculate in numbers what a "revolution" in the tech sense actually means). But the point is clear: The current smartphone growth is a huge movement in the tech industry, and is taking place on a much faster and larger scale than ever before.iOS and Android make for fastest tech adoption ever originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Mon, 27 Aug 2012 22:00:00 EST. The iPad might have the bulk of the tablet mind share, but the Nexus 7 has Google.com. The $199 tablet is now advertised on Google's homepage with an attention-getting animation. It's hard to miss the tablet on Google.com as it bounces up and eventually rests under a tag line of "The playground is open. The new $199 tablet from Google."
And as one of the top pages on the Internet, this ad spot will likely move quite a few tablets.

Apple promotes Craig Federighi, Dan Riccio to SVP, Executive Team, Bob Mansfield staying on to work on "future products"
Apple has just announced that Craig Federighi is being promoted, fully taking the long-departed Betrand Serlet's post as senior vice-president of Mac software engineering, and his place on the Executive Committee. Also, as expected, Dan Riccio has been promoted to SVP of hardware engineering, and will also be joining the Executive Committee. However, Apple also announced that the man Riccio was to replace, Bob Mansfield, will no longer be retiring, but will be staying with Apple to work on "future projects". All three will report to Apple CEO, Tim Cook, and all three now appear on Apple's Leadership page. Interestingly, both Mansfield and Riccio are listed as SVPs of hardware engineering, while Federighi joins Scott Forstall as an SVP of software engineering, though Forstall is listed as iOS and Federighi as OS X. Apple considers software important enough to have SVPs for both iOS and OS X, but not to have designated SVPs for iOS as opposed to OS X hardware. Former Rdio software engineer joins Google's Project Glass team
There's still quite a few months before those lucky early adopters can get their eager hands (and eyes) on Google's Explorer Edition set of wearables, but in the meantime, the company's not wasting any time and is building up its team to have the frames as loaded as can be. One of the latest additions to Mountain View's Project Glass squad is former Rdio and Danger software engineer Ian McKellar -- who'd previously worked on the streaming service's API, among other things. Mum's the word on what exactly he'll be tinkering with at the Project Glass laboratories, though we can't imagine it'll be anything short of amazing. In case you'd like to dive into his thoughts a little more, you can check out his tweet on the matter at the link below.Filed under: Misc, Wearables, SoftwareFormer Rdio software engineer joins Google's Project Glass team originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 28 Aug 2012 07:44:00 EDT. Apple VP Eddy Cue: Apple TV not likely in the near future
If you were hoping for a 60-inch Apple-branded HDTV for Christmas, get prepared to buy yourself another toy instead. Pacific Crest analyst Andy Hargreaves met Wednesday with Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer and Senior VP for Internet services and software, and today he published a company update saying that "An Apple television appears extremely unlikely in the near-term."
Hargreaves noted that it doesn't appear to be technology that's holding up the entry of Apple into the TV or cable set-top box -- instead, it's the cable TV companies and content providers that are holding up the works. From Hargreaves' report:
The key problems in the television market are the poor quality of the user interface and the forced bundling of pay TV content, in our view. While Apple could almost certainly create a better user interface, Mr. Cue's commentary suggested that this would be an incomplete solution from Apple's perspective unless it could deliver content in a way that is different from the current multichannel pay TV model.
Unfortunately for Apple and for consumers, acquiring rights for traditional broadcast and cable network content outside of the current bundled model is virtually impossible because the content is owned by a relatively small group of companies that have little interest in alternative models for their most valuable content. The differences in regional broadcast content and the lack of scale internationally also create significant hurdles that do not seem possible to cross at this point.
According to Apple 2.0's Philip Elmer-DeWitt, that message is in line with published reports about the slow pace of Apple's negotiations with cable TV companies. Elmer-DeWitt's take? "Apple's much-rumored breakthrough in television -- whatever form it takes -- is likely to come later rather than sooner."Apple VP Eddy Cue: Apple TV not likely in the near future originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Fri, 24 Aug 2012 16:15:00 EST. How to get Notification Center to show you what's playing in iTunes
OS X's Notification Center was introduced in Mountain Lion and is now your one-stop location for all alerts. Besides the customary notifications for incoming emails and reminders, you can also use Notification Center for other content like the title and artist of the current track that's playing in iTunes.
As showcased by OS X Daily, Now Playing uses AppleScripts and Terminal-Notifier to display the current iTunes track and the artist's name along with your other notifications. The app also works with streaming services like Spotify. Now Playing can be downloaded from Mediafire and installed on your OS X Mountain Lion machine.
Another alternative is iTunification from Onible. Inspired by Now Playing, iTunification lets you display the current track and artist in Notification Center and has the added benefit of Growl support. Besides the track and artist name, the Growl option also allows you to display cover art and setup custom alerts.
Both of these apps are scaled down versions of GrowlTunes which adds playback controls your menu bar and displays the current track and artist as a Growl notification. How to get Notification Center to show you what's playing in iTunes originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Fri, 24 Aug 2012 14:00:00 EST. FAA Reviewing Use Of Gadgets In The Air, But Forget About In-Flight Cell Phone Calls
Don't expect to make mid-flight phone calls from your smartphone anytime soon. While the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is putting together a group to re-examine current testing procedures and policies airlines have in place for gadgets, they will not be considering airborne use of cell phones for voice communication.
But that is a small price to pay for safety, especially considering that these policies and procedures are way behind the speed at which we adopt new technology. The government-industry group will look at how these devices are tested for use in the air, as well as the current standards for use of portable electronic devices on board an airplane.

LG's Game World landing on its own Smart TVs
LG has just announced Game World, a new Smart TV portal that's only available to Cinema 3D Smart TV owners. The service will let users snap up downloadable games in categories such as action, RPG or arcade, then play them in 2D or 3D with the company's Magic Remote or other third-party controller. The service is not to be confused with LG's Gaikai cloud gaming service, and the company said most of the titles will be family-friendly. Mind you, that looks like Shadowgun on the main page above, so there's clearly some grown-up only entertainment, too.Continue reading LG's Game World landing on its own Smart TVsFiled under: Gaming, Home Entertainment, Internet, HDLG's Game World landing on its own Smart TVs originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 27 Aug 2012 13:51:00 EDT. RadioShack No Contract Wireless rate plans leak, $60 will get you everything
We're just about a week out from the rumored launch of RadioShack's Cricket-based No Contract Wireless plans, and more details are beginning to trickle out about the prepaid service. Specifically, we've just received information concerning how much The Shack intends to charge on a monthly basis, and it's just about what you'd expect: you can choose between featurephone and smartphone options, with the former hooking you up with unlimited messaging and your choice of 300 minutes for $25 or 1,000 minutes for $35. As for the smartphone plans, you'll get unlimited voice, messaging and Muve Music downloads on both selections; the $50 option will get you one gigabyte of 3G data (before throttling ensues), while $60 bestows you with 2.5GB data and mobile hotspot use, Visual Voicemail access, unlimited international text and all-you-can-eat directory assistance. As a comparison, Cricket's $35 featurephone plan will give you unlimited voice and SMS, compared to 1,000 minutes and unlimited SMS / MMS / 1X data on The Shack. The carrier's basic smartphone option is $55 and offers unlimited voice, messaging and 3G data (throttled at 2.5GB); this may seem like the better deal -- unless you're interested in using Muve Music. Since you have to pay an extra $10 to add the unlimited music service into the mix on Cricket, you'll see a monthly savings of $5 if you waltz into The Shack for the top-tiered plan. We're still waiting for RadioShack to come clean and acknowledge the existence of the NoContract service, but we'll continue to reveal more details as they come down the pipeline. Check out the featurephone rate plans after the break. Alt-week 8.25.12: robotic noses, Nodosaurs and Space X launches again
Alt-week peels back the covers on some of the more curious sci-tech stories from the last seven days. All good things come to an end, they say. Thankfully, most bad things do, too. So while the rest of the world of tech is dealing with the fallout, and possible implications of patent law, over here in the wild party that is Alt, we're fist pumping at all the awesome weekly sci-tech fodder. For example, we've got a robo-nose that can sniff out nasties in the air, a 110-million-year-old footprint found in NASA's back yard, and not one, but two space stories to reflect on. There's a hidden joke in there too, come back once you've read through to find it. This is alt-week.Continue reading Alt-week 8.25.12: robotic noses, Nodosaurs and Space X launches againFiled under: Science, Internet, AltAlt-week 8.25.12: robotic noses, Nodosaurs and Space X launches again originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 25 Aug 2012 18:30:00 EDT. Samsung teasing Series 5 Hybrid PC announcement at IFA
While we fritter away our hours sharing cat pictures on Facebook, Samsung prefers to issue forth teasers for its forthcoming products. The latest is the above snap, raising hopes that its Series 5 Hybrid PC will be formally announced a teutonic trade show IFA this week. The 11-inch Transformer-esque device features a tablet that's magnetically-attached to a keyboard dock, running "full" Windows 8 on Intel's Clover Trail x86 architecture. In addition to Redmond's newest OS, it'll use native versions of the S-Pen apps we've used on the Galaxy Note 10.1, although it's probably too much to hope that it'll be able to make calls like its cousin.Filed under: Laptops, TabletsSamsung teasing Series 5 Hybrid PC announcement at IFA originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 27 Aug 2012 03:43:00 EDT. MacPhun takes Silent Movie Director to a retro level with its new Vintagio app
MacPhun refreshed its Silent Film Director app for the iPhone and gave it a whole new look and a brand new name. Now called Vintagio, the video recording and editing app lets you make retro-looking videos in just a few minutes.
There are a lot of options in Vintagio to let you design your video, your way. You can record in low quality mode (192x144), which is appropriate for MMS, or go full bore with 720P video. Other options include the ability to slow the video down, speed it up or even play it backwards.
The app includes 7 filters that let you film an 80s disco video, a 60s hippy flick, a 1920s flapper movie and more. There are 11 original soundtracks in the app and these clips match the default filters perfectly. If you don't like the track selections, you can always import music from your iPhone's library. You can even add noise to the soundtracks to give them a vintage feel.
When you first open the app, you can choose to shoot your video in Express Mode, which is quick and easy, or Pro Mode, which is filled with options to let you get the perfect look. In Express Mode, you only need to select the filter effect, the recording quality, the soundtrack and the video speed (1.0x, 1.5x, and so on). Once you make these four quick choices, you are only a few minutes away from a completed video.
Vintagio's Pro Mode gives you control over your movie by letting you choose the details for your film. You can also load saved images or saved videos and add both titles and transitions. If you want some fresh content, you can record new videos or snap new photos for your movie. Pro Mode also includes the same filters and soundtracks that are available in the Express Mode.
When you are done arranging your composition, you can render it to your device. Rendering in both the Express and Pro Mode takes a few minutes. While you wait, the app show you a status bar and interesting trivia to keep you entertained. Once the video is done, you can share it on YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook. You can also save it to your camera roll.
With these new features and a dose of creativity, Vintagio will let you create a flick that would make Charlie Chaplin proud. You can download Vintagio now from the iOS App Store. AllThingsD: 'iPad Mini' to get its own event in October after new iPhone reveal
After refreshing its computer range, Apple's gearing up for two events for its new phone and tablet hardware, according to sources at AllThingsD. Given the excitement welling up behind its next iPhone, many have noted (including Daring Fireball's John Gruber) that it would make a whole lot of sense to furnish both the phone and the heavily rumored smaller tablet with individual events -- and that is, apparently, what's going to happen. Unfortunately, the anonymous sources weren't revealing anything further -- Apple's yet to confirm that posited September 12th event date, let alone any secondary event. But when it does, be assured that we'll be there to cover both of them.Filed under: Cellphones, TabletsAllThingsD: 'iPad Mini' to get its own event in October after new iPhone reveal originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 25 Aug 2012 12:17:00 EDT. T-Mobile to offer unlimited data, without throttling
While T-Mobile has always offered unlimited data, it has never truly been 'unlimited' as customers with 3G and 4G phones began seeing 2G/EDGE speeds once they reached the 2GB plateau.Today, the carrier has moved away from the throttling; as long as you pay a little extra. The company has introduced its "Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data," add-on for customers, costing $20 for customers on "Value" plans and $30 for those who are not.One large catch, however, is Hotspot is removed for unlimited users. The pricing is "not promotional," says T-Mobile, meaning it will likely be around until next year when the carrier unveils its 4G LTE network. As of September 5th (when the plans go live), a truly unlimited voice, text and data plan will cost $90 per month, compared to $110 at Verizon and AT&T (for 4GB capped) and $110 on Sprint, which offers fully unlimited, as well, but with terrible data speeds.Permalink | Comments

ITU approves NHK's Super Hi-Vision as 8K standard, sets the UHDTV ball rolling very slowly
We'd heard that the International Telecommunication Union was close to approving Super Hi-Vision as an Ultra High Definition TV standard, and the UN agency hasn't waited long to confirm the rumors. The recommendation to use NHK's 7,680 x 4,320 format has gone unopposed and should define the parameters for incredibly detailed 8K video worldwide. This shouldn't lead anyone to return that 4K TV just yet -- once again, it's important to remember that NHK still won't start any kind of wider testing until 2020. That's also assuming that the first 8K sets are down to Earth instead of the incredibly expensive 145-inch variety.Filed under: Displays, Home Entertainment, HDITU approves NHK's Super Hi-Vision as 8K standard, sets the UHDTV ball rolling very slowly originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 25 Aug 2012 05:37:00 EDT. Cut The Rope, Beat The Traffic, Angry Birds Space and more updated today
We've already heard about some big updates on the App Store this week, but this regular Thursday is also full of them -- some of the App Store's biggest apps are getting big chunky updates to use or play with. Here's a rundown for you.
Angry Birds Space has a Mars Curiosity rover-related update out, with 20 new levels on Mars, and a new astronaut pig. Sounds fun!
Cut the Rope also has new content, with new Spooky Box levels, and a feature called superpowers, which have you chasing after a new star on all levels to date.
Doodle Jump has gotten its "biggest update yet," featuring a new ninja theme to play with, as well as new objects to help you jump farther and faster than ever, and new mechanics and obstacles as well.
As previously mentioned, Facebook finally got its upgrade to a full app instead of just an HTML 5 skin, and it's much faster than it used to be.
ProCamera HD has launched, bringing the versatile and powerful camera app from iPhone to iPad.
The ingenious little Mission Alarm Clock (that requires you to complete "missions" to turn off your alarm every morning) has updated with a new UI and a new mission to complete.
Vintagio is an app that we recently posted about -- it's an update of MacPhun's Silent Movie Director.
And of course the TV Guide app was updated with things like celebrity watchlists and curated channel listings.
Finally, the bill management app Chronicle in the Mac App Store was updated for both Retina Display compatibility, as well as support for Mountain Lion, and a whole new, great looking interface.
All great apps, all updated with even more great features. All of these updates are available for download for free in an App Store near you.Cut The Rope, Beat The Traffic, Angry Birds Space and more updated today originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 18:15:00 EST. Korean court rules on Apple v Samsung patent infringement
Reports are starting to come in that state Apple and Samsung have been found guilty of infringing on each others patents by a Korean court. Apple has been found guilty of infringing 2 patents and will be hit with an import ban and a $35,000 fine. Samsung is also facing a fine of $22,000 and a ban for infringing on Apple's elastic scrolling patent, but the court ruled they didn't copy Apple designs or violate their trade dress. Details are scarce at the moment, coming entirely from tweets and fragments by the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg. We'll update as the news becomes clearer and more complete. Update: Apple may have been found to have been infringing FRAND patents. These types of patents are different in kind from the proprietary patent Samsung was found to be infringing. FRAND stands for fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory, and are standards-essential -- in this case they involve technology required for a phone to use a cellular network. In order to become part of the standard, companies like Samsung agree to license them under FRAND terms. If a Korean court really let Samsung successfully attack Apple with FRAND patents, it's disturbing on a number of levels. Blogger and consultant Florian Mueller of FOSS patents has an informed, if decidedly anti-FRAND litigation view: It would mean that foreign companies would either have to bow to Samsung's and LG's demands and, among other things, give up their own non-standard-essential intellectual property or stop selling in Korea. If I were Apple, I would defend myself vigorously and, if necessary, write off the Korean market until this issue is resolved through bilateral U.S.-Korea talks or at the level of the World Trade Organization. Mueller calls it the declaration of a trade war, and also points out that, outside their native Korea, Samsung has consistently lost cases where they've tried to litigate FRAND patents. All this to say, the Apple v Samsung case in Korea is bigger and more important than either Apple or Samsung. Apple Vs SamsungKoreaPatentsLawsuitNews

Star Wars Wampa Ice Scraper Mitt is winter genius
Did you ever wonder what became of the hand Luke chopped off that Wampa that wanted to eat him on the icy planet of Hoth? I like to imagine that fuzzy Wampa arm crawled around the icy planet like Michael Caine’s mitt in the 80′s flick “The Hand.” Only the Wampa hand was nice and Read The Full Story
Fujifilm X-E1 leaks into view oozing vintage cool
A Japanese site called Digicam Info has leaked pics of a previously unknown Fujifilm mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera, the X-E1. The natty looking snapper bears a strong family resemblance to the X-Pro1 model, but looks to be flaunting a pop-up flash, and lacks the optical viewfinder of the flagship model. The sneaked pics show black and silver-topped models, as well as a previously announced lens, the 18-55 f/2.8-4.0 OIS zoom that has yet to hit the market. No other details, such as price, are available yet, but the model will likely slot behind the X-Pro1 and ahead of the X100 to fill out the retro-look X-family. If the U.S. elections bore you, if debate is just not action packed enough, if the issues aren't as compelling as a good hotdog to the jaw or lightsaber to the face, the the creators of Infinity Blade have just the game for you -- VOTE!!! VOTE!!! brings the full power of the Epic Unreal 3 engine to the biggest political slobberknocker this side of the actual election. You get to play as your favorite Republican or Democratic candidate, President Obama or Mitt Romney, in a classic cartoon take on the fighting genre. It's not meant to be serious, of course -- at least no more serious than actual election coverage these days -- though they do try to put some vote metrics and information alongside the punch-fest, including Rock the Vote. But let's be frank, it's mostly about winning crazy costumes, insane weapon props, and a bunch of beyond silly accessories so you can let off a little steam about the state of the union, regardless of which party you believe should be stating that union. So, gear up, and fight your way through the White House lawn, the Oval Office, the debate stage, and more. Forget negative campaign and get into full on trash talk. Do to the American political machine what it's been doing to the electorate for years now -- game it. And in ridiculous fashion. Monster Coloring Book for iPhone and iPad review
If there's one thing that all kids love to do, it's to color. They also love cute monsters. Put the two together -- and you get Monster Coloring Book! This iPhone and iPad app will allow your kids to color and paint without the mess or risk of markers making contact with your carpet or one of the other many disastrous things that can happen to your home when your child decides to express his artistic side. Monster Coloring Book includes 175 different monsters to color, giving your child a plethora of options to choose from. They are separated into 7 different categories: starters, swimmers, sleepers, creatures, flyers, grab bag, and hairies. Once a monster is chosen, you can select between nine different brushes and a wide selection of colors. For the younger kids who haven't mastered the skill of coloring inside the lines, they can use a paint bucket that automatically fills in the regions with the selected color. In addition to colors, Monster Coloring Book allows you to select between many different patterns. These patterns work nicely for clothing or the background or whatever your kid may decide! Lastly, a coloring book isn't complete without stickers, so Monster Coloring Book also includes stickers of hats, speech bubbles, balloons, glasses, hair, monsters, and more. To use a sticker, you must activate it. When you first select the sticker, it will be automatically activated, but if you place it, you must hold your finger down on it to re-activate. When activated, you can adjust its size and rotation by pinching to zoom and rotate. While coloring your monster, you can tap the magnifying glass to zoom into the picture. Intuitively, you may want to use two fingers to scroll around the picture when zoomed-in. Unfortunately, this doesn't work. Instead, you must tap the arrow buttons to scroll. I do understand why this may be favorable for small children because they might accidentally scroll with multitouch, but there are plenty of children who love to color that are old enough to understand the concept of multitouch. At the very least, there should be a setting that let's you decide what kind of scrolling will be best. When you're done coloring your photo, you can save it to the in-app gallery where you can print your masterpiece, share it via email, turn it into a puzzle with the Monster Puzzles app, or export to your Camera Roll. The good 175 different monsters Wide selection of brushes, colors, patterns, and stickers Fun, classical music Ability to activate a Child Lock to disable promotional messaging, sharing, and printing Universal for iPhone and iPad The bad No undo button Have to scroll with a button -- no multitouch scrolling No sharing to Facebook or Twitter The conclusion Monster Coloring Book is a great iPhone and iPad coloring book for kids. Well, I keep saying it's for kids, but as an adult, even I find it enjoyable and relaxing! $2.99 - Download Now AppsReviewsIpad AppsApp Reviewmonster coloring bookKids AppsApp Store AppsKids CornerFeaturedApp Reviews

Facebook Overhauls iOS App, Focuses on Speed
Facebook today announced a brand new version of its iPhone/iPad application. Facebook claims that Facebook 5.0 for iOS performs twice as fast as the previous version, as it relies on native iOS code rather than HTML5. Facebook says the app itself should open faster, news feeds should refresh faster, notifications should appear quicker, and photos should open faster. Facebook also added some new double-tap features for the newsfeed and a swipe-down-to-close feature in the photo gallery. Facebook 5.0 for iOS is a free download from the App Store.
OnLive sells company, lays off about 50% of staff
Just in case you didn't hear over the weekend, the cloud computing service OnLive experienced a little bit of a crisis: On Friday morning, the CEO of the company spoke to staff to essentially tell them all that they were fired, and that the assets of the company were being bought by another investor. The good news here is that the OnLive service hasn't gone down at all, and it reportedly isn't going down any time soon. But the bad news is that many of OnLive's employees have lost their jobs, and any investments in the company's potential future that they might have had.
What does this mean for those of us on Mac and iOS? Right now, not much -- both OnLive's gaming service and the OnLive Desktop service (which provides a free streaming Windows computer and Microsoft apps) are still working just fine. The former employees of OnLive went through a rough situation, and for that reason you may not want to support a company like this going forward, but if you've come to depend on either one of those services, you're fine for now.
The future of the company is definitely in question, or at least more question than it was before. Some of the news coming out of the whole event says that OnLive averaged only about 1800 users, which would make the service much smaller than anyone had thought. CEO Steve Perlman also reportedly has turned down previous offers to buy the company, instead hoping that OnLive's patents and other assets would eventually be worth much more.
OnLive showed us an iOS app at one point, and even released an actual Bluetooth controller to work with the iPad, but while the company has released an Android app, it's never been able to get the iOS version approved. There is still an OnLive Desktop app on the store, but that gaming version wasn't ever released. We'll see how the company comes out of this situation going forward -- if things don't get any better for OnLive, this could end up being a service that simply arrived before its time.OnLive sells company, lays off about 50% of staff originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 17:30:00 EST. ZTE-made Concord arrives at T-Mobile and Walmart, caters to the starter crowd at $100 contract-free
T-Mobile wants to offer as much of a lure to smartphone newcomers as to power users who might spring for its truly unlimited data, and the ZTE Concord might just be the right kind of bait. The truly 2010-vintage Android 2.3, 3.5-inch screen and 2-megapixel camera won't get anyone's pulse racing, but a $100 contract-free price is hard to ignore -- even for the sort who'd otherwise be looking for a just-does-calls flip phone. Accordingly, the carrier plans to put the Concord in front of audiences that would rarely care to set foot in a dedicated cellphone store. Walmart is selling the phone today for those comfortable with a Walmart Family Mobile plan. If you'd rather show fealty to T-Mobile itself, you'll have to swing through a Target store on or after August 26th.Continue reading ZTE-made Concord arrives at T-Mobile and Walmart, caters to the starter crowd at $100 contract-freeFiled under: CellphonesZTE-made Concord arrives at T-Mobile and Walmart, caters to the starter crowd at $100 contract-free originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 13:06:00 EDT. Samsung opens its flagship electronics store in Sydney Australia, claims it didn?t copy the Apple Store design
Samsung, who is currently locking horns with Apple over various infringements with regard to cell phone and tablet patents, has just opened another retail store. This store is just a block away from Apple?s own store in Sydney, Australia and what?s more if you walked in without noticing the missing Apple logo outside, you may think you had walked into an Apple Store. Samsung claims otherwise but this store and the last store that Samsung opened in Canada appear to come straight from the Apple book of retail. The latest store details come from a report by The Sydney Morning Herald. It's a flagship consumer electronics store on Sydney's George Street with smiling blue shirt-wearing sales staff, a minimalist design and smartphones and tablets that invite customers to pick up and play. But according to Samsung, the new store - just a block from Apple's Sydney store - was all its own idea. Samsung Australia's vice-president of telecommunications, Tyler McGee, said Apple "didn't even come into the equation when we were looking for a location [for the store]". But come on, the layout of the store is pretty similar, right? "Well, if you look at our layout this is the layout that we use around the world and it's about basically giving the consumers the opportunity to interact, learn and play with our devices," McGee said. Surely Samsung could have come up with at least a few original ideas; they even dress the sales staff in the traditional blue polo shirts worn by Apple Genius staff. The layout of the stores with the light wooden bench tables all laid out with working products is far too similar for it to be classed as an original Samsung idea. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but it?s all getting a little bit silly now. Samsung can copy only so much from Apple, at the end of the day, Apple?s customer service is second to none, I bet Samsung haven?t fully copied that part yet and probably never will. Take a look at the video below which gives you a brief look around the store. What do you think? Is Samsung trying to deliberately copy Apple?s proven blueprint for retail success? ZooGue's Social Case Pro: Colorful, and free for a limited time
Here at TUAW, we do a lot of reviews of iPhone cases, but rarely do we get to tell our readers about a case that is actually free for a short time. That's the case with ZooGue's new Social Case Pro, which will normally sell for US$14.99. The company knows that the iPhone case market is crowded, so to build a market for the Social Case Pro, it's giving 'em away to the first 50,000 customers who order one.
The case is made of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), with a ridged grip so it stays in your hand without slipping. There's a rainbow of colors available: Black, light grey, white, navy blue, old spice red, light blue, pink, purple, army green, and lime green.
