Regarding San Francisco Police, Apple and the search for the missing iPhone prototype
Despite a day of wild rumors, SFWeekly is reporting that the San Francisco Police Department did assist Apple investigators when an iPhone prototype device again went missing in a bar late July this year.

Bright 3D Drive: Epson Introduces World?s First HTPS-TFT 3D Panel
Epson has been working on HTPS (high-temperature polysilicon)-based TFT panels for years now, and yesterday the company announced the launch of the world's first such panel for 3D 3LCD projectors. There will be two models, one measuring 0.74 inches (pictured) and another one with 0.61 inches, both will full HD resolution.
According to Epson, the new devices use a technology called "Bright 3D Drive" that helped to boost the image refresh rate from 240Hz to 480Hz. As a result, 3D pictures produced by the new panels are said to be 1.5 times brighter than those created by 240Hz models.

Poynt joins with Missing Children Society of Canada bringing child search alerts to your BlackBerry
Every year over 300,000 children are abducted in Canada and the US. This statistic is both heartbreaking and frightening, especially if you're a parent. It's always nice to see developers of popular applications updating their apps for the better good of the world, and this is one of those occasions. Poynt announced yesterday that they have joined with the Missing Children Society of Canada (MCSC) to assist in the fight against child abduction.
A first-of-its-kind geo-targeted notification system through a mobile app, Poynt will assist in the timely location and recovery of missing or abducted children. When a child goes missing or new information on their whereabouts is received, time is of the utmost importance. By pushing geo-relevant Child Search Alerts to Poynt users already in the vicinity of a missing child, Poynt and MCSC will be able to quickly disseminate important information to aid in the recovery of missing children. The Child Search Alerts will direct Poynt users to a mobile website where they can view information about the missing child including pictures, a physical description, background details, information about other potential people who are with the child, as well as the areas where the child is thought to be located.
This is awesome news and a partnership that has potential to do a lot of real good in the world. Poynt can be found in BlackBerry App World. Full press release and further details about the new feature can be found after the break.

Amazon Is Only Launching A 7? Tablet? Genius. (Plus A Mockup!)
The Amazon Kindle tablet is real. Very much real. As in, MG has held it in his very own hands. I threw together the mockup above based on what he shared with me.
As MG explained, we now know that the Kindle tablet won't initially ship in both 7-inch and 10-inch variants, contrary to previous rumors. After a change in plans earlier this summer, Amazon only intends to launch with a 7-inch model.
That decision might just be the best one that Amazon could have possibly made ? and it ought to have Samsung and all of the other Android tablet manufacturers shaking in their boots.

Netflix explains break-up with Starz
Earlier today we reported that Starz had called off all talks to renew their content licensing agreement with Netflix.
Following the move, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings had this to say of the break (via BI):
Starz has been a great content partner for many years and we are thankful for their support. While we regret their decision to let our agreement lapse next February, we are grateful to Chris and his team for the early notice of their decision, which will give us time to license other content before Starz expires.
While Starz was a huge part of viewing on Netflix several years ago because it was some of the only mainstream content we offered, over the years we spent more and more licensing great TV shows from all four broadcast networks and many cable networks, and we have licensed 1st run movies from Relativity, MGM, Paramount, Lionsgate and others.
Because weve licensed so much other great content, Starz content is now down to about 8% of domestic Netflix subscribers viewing. As we add a huge more content in Q4, we expect Starz content to naturally drift down to 5-6% of domestic viewing in Q1. We are confident we can take the money we had earmarked for Starz renewal next year, and spend it with other content providers to maintain or even improve the Netflix experience.
We have tremendous respect for the Starz creative team, and we look forward to someday licensing some of their original or licensed content.
It will be interesting to see what Netflix will invest the money in now that they do not have to pay out $300 million per year for mediocre-to-good content that only amounts to 8% of total viewership.
Additionally, the company hiked its prices today, splitting streaming and DVD rentals.Permalink | Comments

DirecTV adds AMC-HD next week, too bad Mad Men is still six months away
After slowing its pace of adding HD channels dramatically as of late, DirecTV has finally satisfied one of the loudest and longest running customer requests by announcing AMC-HD will come to its satellites starting September 9th. There's still a pretty long list of channels it's not offering yet, but if you're on contract and just want to enjoy some Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead and Mad Men (when it returns in March) in HD then today's Facebook posting (just hours after it was dug up by the satellite sleuths at DBSTalk) is exactly what you've been waiting for.

Samsung unveils stacked Galaxy Tab 7.7
Samsung has unveiled its latest tablet today at the IFA event, the Galaxy Tab 7.7.
As with other devices, the 7.7 is in reference to the device's screen size, at 7.7-inches.
Making the tablet impressive is its Super AMOLED Plus display and 1280x800 resolution that is normally seen on bigger devices. Additionally, it is ultrathin at 0.31 inches thick, weighing in at 12 ounces. The Super AMOLED screen should offer superior colors and viewing angles to any tablet on the market.
The 7.7 has a fast dual core processor at 1.4GHz, runs on Android 3.2 (with TouchWiz UI), has 64GB internal storage, 3MP camera and a large 5100mAh battery.
Samsung says the device will be launched "in the coming months" with pricing unknown at time being.

Apple's London store faces stumbling block over sunlight restriction
A battle is brewing over a future development that could house London's newest Apple Store. The City of London owns a plot of land at 100 Cheapside and is looking to sell the property to US developer Hines. Hines has plans to build a 10-story development with both office space (87,000 square feet) and retail space (13,000 square feet).
Apple has been singled out as a possible tenant, but the company's plans to add another London store could be thwarted by a sunlight law. Under this law, neighbors have a right to block the construction of a building that blocks out sunlight.
The City of London is asking the transport and policy committees to override this sunlight law and let the building plans continue. If it does receive approval, this would put an Apple store in one of the wealthiest neighborhood of London.Apple's London store faces stumbling block over sunlight restriction originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Fri, 02 Sep 2011 12:00:00 EST. Sprint Confirms $350 ETF Change
Sprint today confirmed to Phone Scoop via email that the company plans to change its early termination fee. A Sprint spokesperson explained, "Beginning September 9, Sprint is introducing a new pro-rated policy for ETFs for customers purchasing advanced devices such as smartphones, tablets, notebooks and netbooks. Customers with these advanced devices will be subject to a $350 ETF, which will be pro-rated based on the number of months remaining, should they decide to cancel service before the end of their service agreement." Prior to this change, Sprint charged $200 ETFs for those breaking contracts early. AT&T and Verizon Wireless have similar $350 pro-rated ETFs.
Archos 80 G9 and 101 G9 hands-on (video)
So, so many tablets this week at IFA. Archos's pair of Honeycomb slates may not have garnered the same sort of excitement as, say yesterday's Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 or Toshiba AT200, but there are a lot of interesting things going on with the 80 G9 and 101 G9. From an aesthetic standpoint, these are pretty nice looking devices (the 80 and 101 look largely the same, save for the difference in footprint and screen size), though they're not quite on-par with the two aforementioned tablets, in terms of build. Among other things, they're a bit on the chunky side and have fairly considerable bezels.
Like those devices, the G9 tablets run Android 3.2, though a decidedly less skinned up version than Samsung's device. And their 1.5GHz processor assures that they can handle the OS with ease. Archos's tablets also have a few tricks up their collective sleeve. Flip the devices over, and you find a kickstand on one side and a slot on the other than opens up to reveal a USB port designed for the company's proprietary 3G stick.
Also pretty awesome is the ability to configure their hard drives up to 250GB -- a fairly staggering sum in the tablet world. We got to spend some hands-on time with both -- check out a video after the break.Gallery: Archos 8 G9 tablet hands-onGallery: Archos 101 G9 tablet hands-onContinue reading Archos 80 G9 and 101 G9 hands-on (video)Archos 80 G9 and 101 G9 hands-on (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 02 Sep 2011 21:12:00 EDT. Building Bjrk's "Biophillia" iPad app
Creative Applications has got an interesting post on the development of Björks new app album, Biophillia, as well as the in-app purchased track, "Virus."
As mentioned on TUAW a few weeks back, Björk released what she refers to as the first "app album" on the iOS App Store. The Icelandic artist is renowned for being different, particularly when it comes to her music, and the app album, Biophillia, is certainly different from most other traditional album releases.
Creative Applications got in touch with Scott Snibbe -- co-creator of the app -- to get some insight into how Biophillia came about. The post includes details on the journey of the app's development, including some concept sketches by Björk and Scott, the tools used to code the app and some of the inspirational imagery behind it.
While Biophillia is a free app download, users are required to purchase the songs of the album via in-app purchase as they are released, though the song "Cosmogony" comes free with the app. Each song brings with it an additional component to the world of Biophillia -- lyrics, the score, animation, credits and a blurb about the song. It's all very interactive and certainly a unique way to listen to an album.
If you're a fan of Björk's Biophillia app, the post is certainly worth a read. And from an app developers point of view, it's an unique eye opener into the work that's gone on behind the scenes.Building Bjrk's "Biophillia" iPad app originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Fri, 02 Sep 2011 13:00:00 EST. Android 2.3.6 begins rolling out to Samsung Nexus S, fixes voice search concerns
If you've been one of the unlucky folks who've been experiencing issues with the voice search on your Samsung Nexus S, fortune may be coming your way this weekend in the form of an OTA update. Android 2.3.6, which aims to fix the voice search bug (other improvements haven't been detailed yet, aside from "security patches"), has officially begun rolling out to the device. The new firmware hasn't been pushed to our devices yet -- attempting a manual check yielded no results either -- but Google is stating that the refresh will likely take a few days to make the rounds. So unless you've been hit hard by the bugs, we doubt you should panic if it takes extra time to reach your phone.

Office Depot Now Fulfilling At Least Some 32GB TouchPad Backorders
TouchPads are in hot demand right now and it seems as if Office Depot just is ready to ship out another round. This comes from an email set to us that indicates at least some 32GB TouchPad orders were canceled, which the retailer is ready to use to fulfill the backorders.
Chances are that if you're part of this group, there's an email waiting for you from Office Depot right now. If you don't have said email, you're probably going to be waiting a little longer if not indefinitely -- unless the retailer you entrusted receives part of the last run of TouchPads.

Review: SystemDash for BlackBerry smartphones
We?ve heard time again how important it is to keep an eye on your memory and battery level. As hard as we try, there are times where we slip and forget to check. I?ve forgotten to close a few apps before flopping onto the couch to watch a movie or two. The next thing you know, my BlackBerry is almost completely drained. Nothing alerted me. I swear, if only my BlackBerry cried for help, I would have paused the movie to take care of the situation.
If you don?t have your BlackBerry in hand, SystemDash will keep you in the know. Battery level alerts are integrated into your BlackBerry profiles, while the app monitors items such as your available memory and battery temperature. Looking to save your battery juice instead of squeezing every last ounce of it out? Take a look.

Starz CEO cancels all talks to renew Netflix agreement
Starz has ended all conversations with Netflix over renewing their popular movie licensing agreement.
The move comes the same day Netflix has begun charging more for streaming, if you want to keep your physical DVD rentals, as well.
Says the company:
Starz Entertainment has ended contract renewal negotiations with Netflix. When the agreement expires on February 28, 2012, Starz will cease to distribute its content on the Netflix streaming platform. This decision is a result of our strategy to protect the premium nature of our brand by preserving the appropriate pricing and packaging of our exclusive and highly valuable content. With our current studio rights and growing original programming presence, the network is in an excellent position to evaluate new opportunities and expand its overall business.
The four-year "sweetheart" deal signed by Netflix 42 months ago had the company paying just $165 million total for 1000 movies. The new deal would have cost over $200 million per year.Permalink | Comments

Samsung Galaxy S II LTE ready for your reservation on Rogers
There was much rejoicing Stateside upon Tuesday's unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S II, but it's Canadian fans that are getting the party favors ready. A reservation page for the Galaxy S II LTE -- essentially the device we've grown to admire, but with an added 4G turbo boost -- is now up and running on Rogers' site. As a disclaimer, the only way to get one put on hold with your name on it is to fork over a $40 refundable deposit. We haven't seen any change in the phone's official release, so for now we should still expect it before the end of Autumn; at least speed enthusiasts are now one step closer to having the highly-coveted device in their hands.

Samsung Wave 3 hands-on (video)
Had enough Samsung this morning? Well, how about a little more Samsung, then. Also on the company's laundry list of new devices is the Wave, which was announced earlier this week. The Wave 3 is the highest end of the three new devices carrying that name, packing a zippy 1.4GHz processor, which seems to handle tasks with ease. Like most of the rest of the products introduced here at IFA, the screen is the centerpiece of the device, a brilliant 4-inch WVGA unit. Also like the rest of Samsung's handsets, the hardware is really terrific on the Wave, glossy screen complimenting a brushed aluminum back.
The handset runs Bada 2.0, which means that we're not likely to be seeing the thing in the US any time in the near future -- Samsung has largely backed away from US support for the mobile operating system, though it promises to expand its selection of applications from third-party app developers. Also new on the software front is ChatON, a mobile messaging service which we were unfortunately unable to give a spin here in Berlin.

Show Your Old-School Gaming Love With These Sega Console iPhone Cases
I don't always post about iPhone cases... but when I do, I prefer retro gaming ones. Sure, you could have a cool metallic case, or go all-leather, or make your phone look like R2-D2 — but when you can have a Dreamcast on the back, those other options seem to lose their luster.

HP promotes '$40 billion' PC business spin-off with new series of ads
Before today, HP had only expressed that it "will consider a broad range of options" for the future of its Personal Systems Group; and now, said company's released a series of ads to confirm its intention to spin it off into a separate company. Amidst the lovely (and ironic) mention of HP's long-lived success with its $40 billion PC business, the underlying message here is all about "staying focused on our customer needs" and to "better anticipate change" -- much like being a start-up all over again, as suggested by Executive Vice President Todd Bradley on HP's website. Of course, the customer in question here is likely from the enterprise sector, as we've all learned from CEO Leo Apotheker's interview at D9, the death of HP's webOS devices, and the pending acquisition of Autonomy. Still, we've yet to hear more concrete plans or even figure out who the potential buyers might be (if any), but for now, you can take a gander at HP's "sample ad" after the break.Continue reading HP promotes '$40 billion' PC business spin-off with new series of adsHP promotes '$40 billion' PC business spin-off with new series of ads originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 31 Aug 2011 15:09:00 EDT. Apple loses another iPhone prototype at a bar
Despite the high-profile incident last year with an Apple employee losing an iPhone 4 prototype at a bar, it seems the same blunder has happened again for the iPhone 5. But this time, the lost prototype, gone missing since late July, managed to stay under the radar until CNET reported learning of it today. The [...]
EnergyHub's energy management system on sale now to American planetlovers
Those Smart Meters may not have went over so well in San Francisco, and Google may have shuttered PowerMeter just a few months ago... but that doesn't mean that Ma Earth is doomed to live a life a few centigrade higher than she should, right? EnergyHub has just announced that its snazzily designed energy monitoring system is now on sale for eco-minded folk in the USA, with $399 netting you a home base, a socket, a strip and a wireless thermostat (simpler bundles start at $299). According to the company, this kit's ready to take on shacks, apartments or even houseboats, though no seal of approval from the Old Spice guy has been garnered in the case of the latter. Previously, this here package was only available through utility-sponsored programs, but now the simpleton in your life can see live energy use information, automatically switch appliances off while one's away and sleeping, and even control settings remotely via the web or an iPhone / Android app. Head on past the break for an introductory video, or visit the source links to get in on the buying frenzy.Continue reading EnergyHub's energy management system on sale now to American planetloversEnergyHub's energy management system on sale now to American planetlovers originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 31 Aug 2011 18:54:00 EDT. UCLA creates portable microscope that uses holograms, not lenses
Instead of lugging a heavy microscope into the field, doctors and nurses in remote regions may have a more portable choice -- a lightweight microscope that replaces lenses with holograms. Researchers at UCLA announced a prototype dual-mode microscope that's lightweight, costs between $50 and $100 to produce and is similar in size to a banana. Like a hologram that uses interfering rays to create an image, this device shines light on a sample where its sensor chip (apparently also found in iPhones and BlackBerrys) and a cloud-based software program analyze the interference pattern and reconstruct an image of the sample. Since it's dual-mode, both large samples and small samples can be analyzed through processes called "transmission" and "reflection," and doctors could potentially use their laptops or smartphones to access the images remotely. Although still considered a prototype, researchers think the development has the opportunity to revolutionize health care by allowing doctors to test things like water, blood and food. Check out the full PR after the break.Continue reading UCLA creates portable microscope that uses holograms, not lensesUCLA creates portable microscope that uses holograms, not lenses originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 31 Aug 2011 20:17:00 EDT. Apple contributing to Chinese pollution, environmentalists say
Five environmental organizations in China have issued a report accusing Apple of contributing to the country’s pollution by providing business to suppliers that have “public records of environmental violations,” the Financial Times reported on Wednesday. The environmentalists attempted to contact 29 different tech companies in an effort to coerce the firms into cleaning up their supply chains but said Apple was unresponsive. Apple is reportedly taking “advantage of the loopholes in developing countries’ environmental management systems” to create its products. Factories for Kaedar Electronics and Unimicron Electronics are being blamed for increased cancer rates and pollution in the Chinese city of Kunshan. In addition, increased air pollution has forced parents to send their children to schools outside the city. Read

iOS 5 beta 7 goes live for developers
Well, you can't say Cupertino isn't being consistent. Just like last time, Apple's gone and released a new beta of iOS 5, less than two weeks after the last one. Not much of interest pops out of build 9A5313E's release notes, but we'd presume it squashes a fair share of bugs. Hit up settings to begin the roughly 70MB OTA update, or test those browser downloading skills at the dev portal linked below. And while you're there, don't forget to snag updated versions of Xcode, iTunes, and an updated firmware for the second-generation AppleTV. Peep a screenshot of the OTA after the break and let us know how you fare in comments.

Apple MacBook 3G prototype called back home

Samsung Chromebooks Drop In Price: Deadpool Or New Models? UPDATE
The long-awaited Chromebooks finally hit retails in June but they're already seeing significant price reductions. Both Acer and Samsung entered the market with modestly priced options with the Samsung models commanding a slight premium. But not anymore. Amazon just dropped the price on the Samsung Chromebooks by 7% to 10% with the WiFi-only model now costing $399 and the 3G model running $449. That's down from their MSRP of $429 and $499, respectively. With Chrome OS still in its infancy and niche products not lasting very long in today's market, it makes you wonder if Google or its hardware partners are slowly giving up hope on the platform or simply prepping for new models.

Samsung Announces BBM-Style ChatOn App With BlackBerry Support
Samsung has recently announced a new chat service called ChatOn that will have a very long list of smartphones and feature phones that it supports, including BlackBerry. While ChatOn will surely have a community of BlackBerry users, there's simply too much deep integration that BBM provides over ChatOn for it to be any kind of replacement. Verizon Offering Intuit's GoPayment to Smartphones
Verizon Wireless today announced that it has partnered with Intuit in order to provide Intuit's GoPayment app and pocket-sized credit card reader to Verizon's customers. The GoPayment device is a credit card reader that plugs into the audio jack of a smartphone or tablet. It can then be used, in conjunction with the application, to process credit card payments directly from the phone. The product is aimed at small businesses and competes with Square. The GoPayment reader costs $29.97, but is free after rebates. Service plans for processing payments vary, but require the smartphone to have a voice/data plan.
DJ Sound Control computer mod redefines luggable
Few would look at Lenovo's decidedly ordinary A700 all-in-one desktop and think: DJ rig, but then you wouldn't be PC modder Chris Blarsky (of the Hulk PC mod fame). After four months of work, he's managed to transform the 23-inch system into the so-called DJ Sound Control rig you see above, which comes complete with sliding drawer to accommodate a keyboard or other DJ gear in case the slew of built-in options aren't enough for you, not to mention a separate I/O box that also doubles as a power supply (also of the luggable variety). Hit the source link below for a closer look, although you might want to grab a cup of coffee while the this particular experiment in Flash excess loads.DJ Sound Control computer mod redefines luggable originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 29 Aug 2011 15:54:00 EDT. iPhone camera being used for traffic light testing
A group of researchers at MIT and Princeton University are testing to figure out how to best save fuel when stopping and re-starting cars at traffic lights, and they're using the iPhone to do so. The smartphone is mounted on the car's dashboard, and uses the camera and GPS information in a system called SignalGuru that tells the driver when it's best to slow the car down in order to save fuel (so you're not always revving up the engine and then having to put on the brakes when the next light pops up). The system works, apparently, and in Cambridge, MA testing, fuel consumption was cut down by 20 percent.
The system was also tested in Singapore, where most traffic lights change the length they're displayed based on the traffic around them. In that area, as opposed to the US (where lights are generally on fixed schedules), the prediction mechanism didn't work quite as well. It was off by up to two seconds, say the researchers.
It sounds like any indication can be helpful. It's hard to see if this is something that could eventually make its way to the consumer market -- more likely it would be used in commercial vehicles as a solution. But you never know -- if the system works on an iPhone and there's an in-car mount that's standardized enough to work at the right angles, your phone could be telling you when to slow down on the road, and saving you money at the same time.

Salesforce CEO Benioff "gifted" App Store trademark and domain to Jobs
In an interview with Bloomberg, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff tells an interesting tale of how he gave the App Store domain and trademark to to Apple as a gift to Steve Jobs. Of course, the App Store trademark itself is now under scrutiny, with Microsoft and Amazon claiming it is a generic term.
Apparently Benioff and some of his team met with Jobs in 2003, and Steve suggested they build an ecosystem around their Salesforce product, which Jobs praised. They wound up with App Exchange, but Benioff also trademarked App Store and bought the domain. When Apple launched an app ecosystem for the iPhone, Benioff was in the audience during the announcement. He went directly to Jobs at the event and said he was giving Apple the trademark and domain as a gift, thanking him for his sage advice in 2003.
It's a nice story, and sadly the kind of nice thing you don't hear that often in Silicon Valley these days.

BlackBerry PlayBook v2.0 makes another appearance
The other night we were treated to some leaked shots of what appears to be BlackBerry PlayBook v2.0, and since then a few more pics have popped up in the forums. And lookie there, the OS has been updated already from v2.0.0.2992 to v2.0.0.3013! Still no official word on when any of us might be seeing this for our PlayBooks, but hopefully the testing is progressing well and we'll get the update soon. BlackBerry Soft Shell Case for the BlackBerry Bold 9930 / 9900 Review
The BlackBerry Soft Shell Case for the BlackBerry Bold 9930 / 9900!
The Soft Shell Case for the BlackBerry Bold 9930 / 9900 Looks Great from all angles, including head on!
I'm absolutely LOVING my BlackBerry Bold 9900 and have been testing out and putting to use every case and accessory I can get my hands-on for this beauty of a BlackBerry. I've never been one to worry too much about my BlackBerry getting scuffed, but with its stainless steel band and iconic styling this is a BlackBerry I really want to take care, as will you.
For everyday basic protection without sacrificing usability, the BlackBerry Soft Shell Case for the Bold 9930 / 9900 is a great option. Available in Black, Translucent, Green, Brown and Indigio color options, it securely fits the new Bold while providing access to all ports, buttons and the camera. This isn't your typical rubbery BlackBerry skin. Rather, the Soft Shell case is made from a high-performance, flexible, plastic-like material, which gives the back and sides of the 9900 / 9930 a protective barrier against accidental bumps and scratches. The case is pretty minimal in thickness, keeping the overall size of the phone as close to original as possible. Overall I've found it to be a really nice case. It feels nice in the hand, doesn't mess with the usability, and you definitely feel better knowing you won't be scratching up that carbon fiber battery door when you put the phone down on a table or counter. It's a really nice, tight fitting design - unless you're looking at a cut out for a port, you almost wouldn't realize there is a case on the phone.
The BlackBerry Bold 9930/9900 Soft Shell case has a list price of $19.99, but you can get it for less at ShopCrackBerry.com. With such high demand for Bold 9930/9900 cases it's been hard to keep inventory stock, but you can still order now for first crack at the new shipments and we're even giving away a chance for you to win one for free (details below). Keep reading for more photos and details surrounding this awesome case.

Klipsch intros Image S4A in-ears, lets Android users feel the in-line remote love
There's no question Klipsch's S4 in-ear headphone line has some of the best to be had for under $100, yet aside from its iPhone-compatible S4i variant, mobile phone users wanting an in-line remote's benefits were outta luck. Well, it looks like times are a-changin' as an Android-oriented version of the noise-isolating buds, appropriately dubbed S4A, has popped up for pre-order on Klipsch's site. The remote's compatible down to Android 2.1 and appears to be slightly tweaked from the S4i with less buttons, but the specs say it'll work for phone calls, music control and volume adjustment. To make this cake's icing even richer, a Klipsch Control App will also allow for "customized functionality." They're priced at a cool Benjamin with no word on a ship date just yet, but you'll find some robot-clad closeups in the gallery below. Gallery: Klipsch Image S4A in-ear headphones

Parrot Asteroid to drive music, Android from your dash this October (video)
We've seen flavors of Android on our tablets, smartphones -- even a microwave oven -- but Parrot's Asteroid receiver is finally ready to park in your car's dash, bringing a tricked out version of Google's mobile OS to yet another innovative platform. In addition to an FM radio and a line-in connection (duh), the Asteroid also includes USB connectivity, an SD card slot, music on demand, and voice activated music search. There's also hands-free calling over Bluetooth, contact voice recognition, and automatic phonebook sync -- all controlled using a built-in jog wheel or your voice, and displayed on a 3.2-inch LCD. The device connects to the web using your smartphone's WiFi hotspot feature, or by attaching a USB 3G dongle. Asteroid's built-in Maps app and external GPS antenna will be ready to help you navigate the highway for $349 beginning in October, but jump past the break for a peek at the receiver's red-light-cam-spotting iCoyote app in the meantime.Continue reading Parrot Asteroid to drive music, Android from your dash this October (video)Parrot Asteroid to drive music, Android from your dash this October (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 29 Aug 2011 12:46:00 EDT. Samsung Announces Galaxy S II LTE
Samsung has unveiled a new version of the Galaxy S II including support for Long Term Evolution 4G. The Galaxy S II LTE runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and support for 3D graphics and gaming. It has a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, an 8-megapixel camera and HD video capture. The device will ship with Samsung's various hubs, include the Social, Game, and Music hubs (Reader hub to be available after launch), which provide users with access to content, media, and other services. Samsung notes that the Galaxy S II will support the mobile hotspot feature and will allow up to eight other Wi-Fi devices to connect to the mobile network. Samsung didn't specify what bands the Galaxy S II LTE will support. AT&T and Verizon Wireless are deploying LTE on different slices of 700MHz spectrum in the U.S. European network operators are deploying LTE in a number of bands, including 800MHz, 1800MHz, and other frequencies. Samsung is expected to make a more formal announcement on September 1 in Berlin at the IFA event.

BeBook Club 'S' boosts speed, contrast, leaves off nothing for savings
The respectable, if not exactly mind-blowing, BeBook Club e-reader is getting an update and adding an "S." So, what exactly does the BeBook Club 'S' bring to the party? Well, one of them fancy Pearl e-ink screens for starters, but also storage (it now sports 1GB of internal flash) and speed (it's got a beefy new 800MHz CPU). The design remains the same, but we're hoping the price doesn't. At $179 the original BeBook Club was always a tough sell, and with the price of the Kindle and Nook tumbling fast the 'S' here better also stand for savings.

Nissan's Leaf rollout speeds up in Chicago this fall
Oprah may have left town and packed up her "You get a car!" philanthropic ways, but that's not stopping Nissan from injecting the windy city with a little auto excitement. Responding to an overwhelming customer demand for its all-electric Leaf vehicles, the Japanese car maker is accelerating the line's rollout to Chicago residents, with the first models to be available this fall. The launch will be bolstered by a planned 280 EV charging stations, funded in part by a pledged $1 million from the state and an additional $1 million grant. If you're living in the second city to our north and haven't yet hitched your ride to the electric hatchback caravan, now might be the time.Continue reading Nissan's Leaf rollout speeds up in Chicago this fallNissan's Leaf rollout speeds up in Chicago this fall originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Aug 2011 20:36:00 EDT. Carriers seeking an alternative to Apple, Google may turn back to BlackBerry
Research In Motion will benefit in the near term from the ongoing launch of its new BlackBerry 7 smartphones, which are beingdescribedas the vendor’sstrongest devices in some time. Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu upgraded his rating on RIM stock to Buy from Neutral, increasing his price target to $35 from $28. Wu sees near-term opportunity in RIM, and he thinks new BlackBerry handsets like the Bold 9900 will be well received.”The key differences this time include a refined user interface and improved hardware including faster processors, better graphics and displays as well as better build quality with its greater use of premium materials,” Wu wrote on Friday. “The company recently launched the new Bold 9900 and Torch 9810 and we

iTunes kills off 99 cent TV show rentals
Apple has quietly killed off its 99 cent TV show rentals via iTunes, sticking with the more successful a-la carte purchasing option.
An SD-quality TV episode costs $2 to purchase while its HD counterpart costs $3.
Rentals were introduced last year alongside the second generation Apple TV set-top box.
Apple says:
iTunes customers have shown they overwhelmingly prefer buying TV shows. iTunes in the Cloud lets customers download and watch their past TV purchases from their iOS devices, Apple TV, Mac or PC allowing them to enjoy their programming whenever and however they choose.
Although they would not mention the services by name, it is clear that Hulu and Netflix were the reason for the lack of rentals. Hulu offers episodes, for free, the day after they air and Netflix has full series of TV episodes, with no ads, for just $7.99 per month.Permalink | Comments

iPhone camera being used for traffic light testing

Google shuts down Slide just 12 months after purchase
In August 2010, Google confirmed that they acquired Slide, the social networking gaming site created in 2005 by Max Levchin, the co-founder of PayPal.
The company's two most popular apps were SuperPoke and SPP Ranch. The first allowed you to adopt a virtual pet, and exchange money for virtual goods. Google purchased the company for around $200 million.
Today, Google has announced the shut down of the company and its apps.
Says Slide:
We created products with the goal of providing a fun way for people to connect, communicate and share. While we are incredibly grateful to our users and for all of the wonderful feedback over the years, many of these products are no longer as active or haven't caught on as we originally hoped.Permalink | Comments

Download the Need For Speed Shift demo for your new BlackBerry 7 device
Reading through Twitter this morning I saw an interesting tweet that contained a link to download a demo version of Need For Speed Shift for the BlackBerry Bold 99xx. Of course, I downloaded it! While it's just a two lap demo of the game, it does show off the graphics which are smooth and run without a glitch. If you've played Need For Speed on the BlackBerry PlayBook, then the BlackBerry Bold version is just what you'd expect from EA. No official word on pricing or availability at this time, though a non-functioning link within the demo indicated the cost will be $4.99. Your device may have come pre-loaded with a download link for this game, but if not you can grab it at the link below.

Patent bill doesn?t provide meaningful alternatives to litigation

Best apps for tracking Hurricane Irene
If you're in the path of Hurricane Irene and you haven't gone through the App Store already looking for the best sources of info on the storm, there are others who have done it for you. Information Week, Appolicious, and MSNBC's Technolog have all made lists of apps for various flavors of smartphones.
Virtually all the lists of apps include the free Weather Channel App for iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7, and Blackberry*. The application description doesn't clearly state if the free app (there's a paid version) has push notification for weather alerts, but the $3.99 Weather Channel Max app does include them.
Aside from TWC's contributions, there's also the paid Hurricane for iPhone or Hurricane HD for iPad which shows up in multiple lists of suggested apps. You may want to try searching for an app for a TV station in your area; a lot of them have notifications for breaking news or weather alerts which you can set up.
CNN has a few apps listed alongside Twitter feeds to watch and things like a multipurpose radio which includes weather band information, a flashlight, a USB port for charging, and a hand crank to make the whole thing go.
Google has set up a crisis response map with a wide variety of layers including power outages, shelters, forecasts and loads more.
Here are some basic tips for maximizing battery life on your smartphone/tablet/laptop/e-reader in case of power outages: Turn the screen brightness down as low as you can, turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and if you can run multiple apps at once, quit anything extraneous. That way you'll get the most out of your battery before you have to hook it to that Axis radio and work the hand crank till your arm gives out.
If you do need this list of apps because you're in Irene's path, all of us at TUAW (who aren't battening down our own hatches) are thinking of you and wishing you well.

Apple stops renting TV shows in iTunes, could be working on a new kind of video service
Apple has pulled the plug on TV episode rentals via iTunes, abruptly leaving customers with only the option of purchasing per episode -- good thing you can watch those on your Apple TV streamed from the cloud -- or a Season Pass where available. AllThingsD has a quote from spokesman Tom Neumayr indicating this was in response to customers that "overwhelmingly prefer buying TV shows." Making the timing of the move particularly curious are once-again renewed rumors of an Apple HDTV and a WSJ profile of new CEO Tim Cook that indicates the company is "working on new technology to deliver video to televisions, and has been discussing whether to try to launch a subscription TV service." Like Google, any move depends on its success in negotiating a new delivery model from the networks, who so far have been averse to anything that threatens their existing relationship with pay-TV providers. It appears 99-cent rentals didn't move the needle, so we'll wait and see what the folks from Cupertino have up their sleeve next.

German court upholds injunction against Samsung tablets
Samsung just got some more bad news. A German court has upheld an earlier preliminary injunction on the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Now Germany joins most of the rest of the EU on the list of countries that ban Samsung from selling its tablet. The injunction came as a result of Apple's legal moves to stop sales of the device, citing its similarities with the iPad.
This isn't the worst news of the month for Samsung, however. Last week a Dutch court ordered EU-wide preliminary injunctions against all Samsung Galaxy smartphones. That ban goes into effect on October 13, 2011 and will arguably hurt much more than the Galaxy Tab ban. After all, smartphones are a much larger piece of Samsung's revenue than the Tab.

Pandora's losses highlight DMCA's effect on Internet radio
Pandora, the popular Internet radio service, continues to grow at an amazing pace, so why is it they can't seem to turn a profit?
The answer lies in a fateful ruling from the Copyright Royalty Board. The CRB's existence is the result of a DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) provision mandating arbitration to determine fair Internet radio royalties in the event rights holders and webcasters couldn't reach their own agreement.
In theory this guaranteed that Internet radio providers would be on equal footing with the much larger music labels in royalgy negotiations. In practice it didn't work out that way.
In 2006 SoundExchange, a royalty collection agency created by the RIAA, entered into arbitration with a variety of webcasters entered into arbitration. The Copyright Royalty Board was created, under a 2004 law, to act as arbitrators, fulfilling the DMCA mandate.
The key point to understand is exactly what that mandate is:
In establishing rates and terms for transmissions by eligible nonsubscription services and new subscription services, the copyright arbitration royalty panel shall establish rates and terms that most clearly represent the rates and terms that would have been negotiated in the marketplace between a willing buyer and a willing seller
The problem with this wording lies in the definition of "a willing buyer and a willing seller." According to CRB judges, that means both sides must be assumed to have equal market power.
Obviously we know that assumption to be false. Even a relatively large operation like Pandora wouldn't be able to survive the loss of major label content for long, while the labels themselves would be relatively unaffected in the short term by the loss of Pandora's business.
The long term effects for the labels would certainly be dramatic, but that doesn't negate their current market power.
Thanks to the resulting CRB decision, setting royalty rates so high no webcaster could possibly afford them, the labels' superior negotiating position is even greater now than before.
Most webcasters including, eventually, Pandora were forced to negotiate lower rates with SoundExchange. Of course, by that time SoundExchange was holding all the cards.
The only alternative to whatever SoundExchange offered was the higher rates mandated by the CRB ruling. It was a choice between a long drawn out death or immediate execution.
Late last year the CRB set new webcaster royalty rates which more or less conform to the same standard as their 2007 ruling. This time around they didn't need to consider a hypothetical market, as they did the first time around.
Instead, they ruled primarily based on the rates webcasters were forced to accept following the original CRB decision.
Of course Pandora, and all the webcasters who struck long term deals with SoundExchange previously, are stuck with those royalty arrangements regardless. CRB rulings only apply to webcasters who haven't reached an agreement with SoundExchange.
Pandora had it's IPO earlier this year. Initially the stock seemed to be in trouble due to concerns about profitability
Despite reporting nothing but losses since going public, optimistic statements about the future have resulted in the stock price actually increasing.
But eventually they will have to turn a profit. It remains to be seen whether that will ever be possible without drastic reform to the royalty calculation process.
Given their current influence in Washington, as evidenced by the recent actions of Immigrations & Customs Enforcement and ongoing legislative efforts on their behalf, don't expect that to happen any time soon.Permalink | Comments

Traktor Kontrol S2 digital DJ system shaves a few inches and bones off its big brother
Look, last year's Traktor Kontrol S4 was pretty damn awesome but, at $1,000 and about the size of your average Williamsburg DJ, it wasn't exactly for everyone. That's where the S2 comes in. Instead of four channels, it's a "2+1" setup that supplements the two standard audio ones with a dedicated sample channel. You still get the same high-resolution jog wheels and integrated 24bit / 96kHz sound card, but Native Instruments managed to shave a few inches, pounds and bucks off its predecessor. At $669 it's much more affordable -- still not exactly an impulse purchase, but within the range of most serious hobbyists. Check out the gallery bellow as well as the video and the PR after the break.
